    If oil pastels were more thin, they would be the perfect media: for me, the issue is that they are so thick, that you only can make big size works with them.

    • @winterillust
      @winterillust ปีที่แล้ว +6

      there's pastel pencils for that though but i haven't used it myself lol.

      Anyway, the soft pastel PENCILS are a versatile tool that could obtain detailes and delicate results, almost hyperrealist.
      I don't understand why there are so few artists making CREATIVE art with them (and not only portraits of animals and portraits of their owners: is a media that can make you the new Dalí or the new HR Giger).

      What I do is using a thin brush, dripping it in turpentine and get some oil pastel with it directly from the bar (yes, I know, I could do that directly in oil, but I am too lazy to go get the tubes, spread the oil, etc.). That way you can create thin lines, draw with the brush, etc. You may even use a painters' knife, catching directly with its edge from the oil pastel bar the pigment and scrubbing it and creating thin lines as in painting with oils.

    omg I picked the same portrait by Sargent to make a study with oil pastels a few months ago! I was so scared because it was my second oil pastel portrait and the first one looked awful... but I had tons of fun and it ended up looking not so bad. Yours is soooo prettyyyy, it's hard to believe you don't use them on a regular basis, you did a great job! :)

    I'm just not confident enough to try the oil pastels to do much more than faff about with. I haven't produced a single finished "piece" with them, sticking to my trusty watercolour paints and pencils (Inktense pencils and blocks mainly).Anyhoo, as usual, blown away by your mastering of every medium you choose to try out. Thanks for covering. They're on my Amazon "wish list" now!

      Unfortunately situation changed. My Rubens pastels have become gummy, I don't understand why. I'm very disappointed. They are new. Especially the greens and ochre shades.It's as if the pigments are not working anymore. I don't understand

    beautiful study. I was very interested in oil pastells, these seem too creamy for me. I just get the feeling you have less control and its gonna be much messier than with a harder version. The colors tho are absolutely gorgeous and you managed to create a beautiful artwork

    How you store these portraits? So it wouldn't smudge or get destroyed?

    • @emhuesart
      @emhuesart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use a Sennelier oil pastel fixative, 2-3 thin coats. The fixative works way better than I expected, you can actually touch the work and it doesn't transfer! To store them, I use sheets of glassine (kinda like parchment paper) between my drawings in a drawer.
