    Just wanted to point out two things about performance slow downs on the Mini. The more system RAM, the more efficiently it will handle large files. We knew this already. What's not always obvious is not using SWAP files. The second issue is, given the size of your raw video files, insuring you're not continually swapping RAM data to storage, 16 GB isn't enough. Also, using internal storage to hold large data files will deprive the system of space needed for swap files. Just a thought.
    I was using duel 400 Mhz CPU machines back in the late 90s for video editing. While everything has become faster and more spacious (drive wise) over the years, the methods used when everything was limited, can still be applied now, to avoid slowdowns and bottlenecks.
    Enjoyed the video.

      This is an awesome explanation! It took me a while to understand this when it was explained to me.. I hope someone who might not be sure sees it.. I think this is why it’s so important people understand that getting “enough” RAM shouldn’t be so overlooked. Especially in machines that aren’t upgradable.

    I upgraded my M2 Pro Mac Mini to 32GB and 1TB. The 32GB is for future requirements but the reason to increase to the 1TB was due to the speed improvement. The 512GB M2 only runs at 1/2 the speed of the 1TB config (2 channels compared to 1)

    • @TheAppleHelpline
      @TheAppleHelpline  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The speed at which the M2 Pro 512GB runs is plenty fast enough to do everything you need.. upgrading to the 1TB is also future proofing. Right now I don’t think you’ll see much of an improvement with the storage upgrade because the machine is optimized to process things fast enough. However, in couple years when file sizes gets bigger, you’ll be glad you did the 1TB drive.

    I will be mounting it under my desk and don’t care if it has a built in sdhc card reader. I already have card readers and multiple cameras with CF, SDHC, and CFexpress type B.

It’s constantly pausing with the pinwheel during my editing. Even though I only have to wait like 5 seconds for it to catch up, imagine that with every click, every time I add text, every adjustment to audio, every adjustment to color grade, etc. It really slows you down. I should have gotten the M2 Pro.

    The fastest external drives have a Thunderbolt 4 interface with a newish NVMe drive. Find a bare casing with cooling fins, and choose the drive of your choice. They can be 4x to 8x faster than an SATA SSD. There is a Thunderbolt Hub that mimics the shape of the M1/2. It has space for NVMe's, 10g/s network, card reader, headphones etc: and uses up just one of your TB ports.

I'd love some advice before I make my decision - for reference, I work as a VA with multiple clients and EVERY DAY I have multiple Chrome Profiles open with multiple tabs open, and quite a lot of software installed. I also had an incident a few years back where I think I broke it, and the Apple repair center installed an additional 256GB of internal storage, however, my mac is always telling me I'm running out of room - probably because the 2x256GB's storage are not unified? (I don't know, that the 'word' I've been hearing on my quest. If anyone can give me some advise I'd appreciate it, this is the best video I've found that relates to working with multiple tabs open, but it raised the question of whether 512GB of internal memory would be enough now - so now I have two conundrums! Thanks for reading. Appreciate the community.

      I got the 4TB internal on the Mac Studio so I didn’t have to worry about external drives.. the Read/Write speeds are around 6,000 MBs. But I paid through the nose. I should have gotten 2TB internal and spent the money to really beef up the external drive and edit off of that. The external speeds are plenty fast enough for what I’m doing. If you are doing heavy editing and other process intensive things for work? Or to build a business then go with the Studio. Coppola and Lucas would probably say that the content is more important than the tools. I can't imagine that this video had more views because of the raw recording format, color correction or transitions. You can be even more successful with a smartphone and any computer, as long as you have a good idea.

      My buddy Danny Winget who does videos too started out only using cell phones.. When he would shoot outside he would only shoot at the same time every day for the best lighting.. He's one of the best at using a phone.. I could probably get away with using my iPhone if I spent time getting the lighting setup correctly. We get lazy using DSLR and Mirrorless cameras that allow for imperfect lighting... I still suck at getting the lighting setup properly. I move stuff around too much. This video blew up because the M2 Mac mini is a hot topic and the combo of the thumb and the title really appealed to people and the Algorithm. Great comment... The style or aesthetic of any production would involve a conscious choice to match the production values to what is being expressed or presented. It may be that crappy cel phone video may contribute the best effect to match the content or expression. Think "The Blair Witch Project" or "Cloverfield". This is technical video about video editing. I imagine having colours corrected etc makes the presenter look more competent and trust worthy.

    Really need a NAS system if you are dealing with that many files. I think something like a PC running TrueNAS with around 6 x 6TB drives in RAID10 (RAID1 x 2 x 3 in ZFS) and like 32 or 64 GB of RAM would work well for you.
    Nice video, but it should be possible to build a decent system to work off of on your network so you're not constantly bound by storage space.

If you ever get to the point when you want to edit from the shared storage directly, an SMB share from TrueNAS with a 10 GbE NIC should pass through to a Thunderbolt cable so it is very usable. Should work without a switch in between - just set a second network with static IPs. @@TheAppleHelpline I mainly use it for graphic design using Adobe and affinity applications. I use screenflow to record my screen in 4k for teaching online courses and edit in final cut pro. I've never had any issues regarding stuttering or freezing, and i generally love my imac pro. I'm just very much on the fence about sticking with my Intel Mac or trying the apple M chips. As my imac pro has pretty high specs, I'm not sure if the mac mini m2 pro will be much of a performance boost as I can't really find any comparison video's. In the back of my mind I'm just thinking that because it's now six years old, maybe I should upgrade it. Yet at the same time, I probably don't need too. I say if you are happy with your current machine then wait as long as you can for the newest or best option at that time. What I mean by best option is maybe when the next Mac Mini comes out the current gen might be perfect for what you need and you can save a few bucks that might be used to change the setup for a bigger monitor? Wait another year or so to see what else Apple is planning for the next generation of the M chips... M3? Maybe something else?
      I think you are just having FOMO... LOL... I am already having it with the non existent Mac Pro... I have no idea what Apple is planning but in my pea brained mind I am pondering a Shell with the basics and then you add your choice of M chip whether it's a Max, Ultra or some new chip that allows lets you pick and choose what CPU and GPU specs you need. Along with replaceable SSD and Memory.. I have no idea.. When i read some of the stories from people thinking the Mac Studio is going to b e discontinued because of the Mac Pro I get annoyed .. Apple will never offer a Mac Pro for less then 5,000-6,000 bucks... But I go back to my stupid theory and think maybe that's how Apple lowers the Price.. Either way for me this Mac Studio is staying around for a while. I spent 6,000 on this and I am going to make it work till it doesn't.. LOL ..

I like the idea of swapping it for the Mac mini m2 pro, but if I do I'm losing 48GB of ram and half of the SSD memory I currently have. If you are going to pick one up the one suggestion I would make is to max out the ram if you can. Yes, the configuration you listed will still perform a lot better then your current setup. But you since you can’t upgrade ram after the fact doing it now will future proof the machine. You might get a couple extra years out if it. If you don’t care about getting more years out of it because spending 400 now is out of your budget I totally understand and you’ll still be blown away by the performance. I just don’t want you feel like damn I should’ve spend the money on the RAM. In that other video I shared with you I was able to get that external ssd setup with 2TB of storage for 264 bucks. The speeds on that drive were 2,500 read/write. The speeds on a 1TB internal setup are 4,900 read/write. Yes faster but both are still able to perform the same tasks no issues. The other thing to remember is if you keep your files on the external drive the system will have an easier time doing tasks since the internal storage isn’t filled with files.
      Does that make sense? Let me know what you’re thinking and please ask if you have any questions. You’re not bothering me at all.

On Apple the choices for file system are APFS, HFS+, and exFAT. Originally did you format the SSD when you bought it or just used it out of the box? Typically external SSDs are formatted exFAT out of the box because it will work with MacOS and Windows. APFS and HFS+ only work on Macs. For Windows NTFS only works for Windows. APFS, HFS+, and NTFS are more robust and less prone to getting corrupted than exFAT.

For video editing it is always recommended to invest on an externa DAS or NAS it will be cheaper, it can sustain the required sequential reads to get fluid timeline editing experience, you have error protection in case of drive failure and it wont brick your expensive machine.

Cloud storage is not good enough for video editing. You need a fast NAS or DAS for that and is much cheaper than cloud storage.

    Hello, this is my first time watching a video on your Your Tube channel. It appears that what, you are trying to say is having a M2 Pro "mac mini" with 2TB of internal storage for the way you edit, would have removed the need to use an external drive. Also, when doing so, your results between the M1 "Mac Studio" and the M2 Pro "mac mini" for exporting your final project would be about the same.

      I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video and leave a comment. Yes, for the way I edit and convenience I would rather go internal. I should have been more clear. I also didn't want all people needed to get the most storage if they didn't need it,
      I would think having 128GB of memory and a better GPU on the Mac Studio would increase render times? Is that because it doesn't utilize the multiple cores?

    I have been using computers since Win3.11......and the only constant is the more power you have the more you will push it's boundaries. A photoshop thumbnail will have very little impact on system performance, Chrome and Firefox are memory hogs. I am so tempted to get a 16gb base model, but for that price I can build and recycle parts for an Intel 12th gen......uuummm. Despite the marketing BS 16gb should be base entry level ram. 8gb won't cut it in future applications.

    I feel like a 300 gb video should be more like 3 hours long than 13 minutes. You might need to compensate instead of trying to have perfect 2160p since a lot of people watching on TH-cam don’t change their auto quality to anything higher than 1080p because it won’t load unless on Wi-Fi. I had to watch this video in 1080p on 5g full bars. 2160 looks fantastic but not practical

    😅Whew! Thought I was the only one, with multi-tasking issues. I thought going from a 2018 16GB Core i7 MacBook Pro 13 with 256GB to a 2022 16GB M2 MacBook Air with 265G would be an upgrade… I thought so, until I went to edit my first video. Had 20 min of 4K iPhone video and two photos, nothing extra. Like you, while I’m editing, I like to have PowerPoint, Safari and Firefox open, looking things up, doing some things on social and creating my TH-cam Thumbnail as I go. OMG, this was the most painful edit of my entire life… it was sooooooo slow, laggy, draggy and I would have to stop to wait for it to catch up. Ugh! So, what do you think I did wrong, other than buying the MBA? Was it because I was editing, in both cases off of the same external drive (no slowdowns on the intel, however) or does the M2 need more Ram or was it the software running off of the 256GB. I am really… lost as to why the M2 didn’t perform better, using, of all things… iMovie.

    • @TheAppleHelpline
      @TheAppleHelpline  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL.... The videos I watched before buying the Mac Studio would drive me nuts... Running one program at a time. and telling me how awesome it was.. .Then the "load" tests that maxed out the processor telling me how much wattage it's using.. I DON'T CARE... its not like my electric bill will increase SO much I can never stress the machine. Like you was worried about the BEST performance the way I used it. I decided to get 128GB of memory... Overkill... probably... but I NEVER want to have it slow down... Not at least for the next few years. I thought about picking up a macbook air so I can sit upstairs where there is sunlight sometimes to edit. LOL The first thing I was doing was maxing out the RAM since it's non-upgradable. I think that was your first mistake, especially with all you're doing. I do have some questions... what kind of external drive were you using? How much of the 256GB internal storage is full? The thing with the M2 256 storage is the write speeds are actually slower than the M1 model because change the way it's configured. If you are maxing out the RAM to do work then the virtual memory will start taxing the internal drive and with the slower write speeds... well... Pinwheel of death... I know to pay $400 for 32GB Ram and another $200 for 1TB of storage might not be the amount you planned to spend.. it will allow you to do what you need to do, especially if it's paying the bills... Does this make sense? Oh on a side note.. This channel did a video th-cam.com/video/5rj5zRQe3rI/w-d-xo.html trying to run the entire OS off a fast external drive... and it ended up having some issues at max usage... Check it out.. It might be an option to try instead taking a loss selling the Macbook aIr to upgrade. You could always get the stuff from Amazon try it for 4 weeks and see if you can repeat your current issue

      @@TheAppleHelpline Every tech channel so far believes that a new Studio will take time. Dual encoders halfing the export time? That's what the M1 Studio combined with the better cooling body makes it an amazing machine for years to come. Yes, the lines are very blurry comparing the M2 Pro mini to the Mac Studio. Still, I would buy the Studio 🌝 HDMI 2.1 only really shines at gaming, due to variable frame rates. Video content doesn't really exceed 60 fps, so the HDMI 2.0 is future proof. Apple really plans confusion here 🤣

    I did get a bit thrown off on one thing. You're showing off M2 Pro Mac mini, but then recommend the M2 Mac mini (non-pro) with 24GB of ram, but haven't tried that machine on the same project? How did the 16GB do on your 9 minute project? Did you feel like you could have used the 32?

      I have been thinking about taking the Apple name out and trying something else. My buddy has a channel named The Apple Circle and they are a pretty big channel. I might talk to him and ask his advice on the matter. He knows a lot more than I do.
      When I recommended the Non pro Mac Mini I was trying to appeal to the regular consumer who wouldn't be using to it to edit as a main focus. As far as the memory goes I recommended it IF you might do some heavy lifting like trying to edit photo's or do something that calls for more memory. The problem is you can't upgrade the memory after the fact so to get more years out of it add the memory now if you can afford it. You can always added external drives after the fact. I needed to explain that more clearly in the video... I need to do better.I appreciate the kind words and your support!

      On the more fun technical stuff...yes, I understand that storage and memory cannot be increased. I'm wondering if you felt that there was too much memory pressure at any point during editing? Did you see what was up in Activity viewer as things were rendering/exporting? I'm curious since you are working in Pro Res. Also, did you ever move the project to your internal Mac mini Pro drive? That 512MB is supposedly just under the speed of the upgraded drives, but it should be a HUGE, noticeable speed increase over the external. I was hoping to hear the comparison, but it's really interesting to hear how good the results were using the external storage as well. Since this video seems to be doing well, it would be interesting to see a follow-up where you move the project to the internal, delete renders, etc then render and export.
      I'm very interested in that new Mac mini Pro...32GB/1TB....but I'm under that Mac Studio option....and an M2 Mac Studio could show up any day! Ughhh! I'm on a MBP mid 2014 and still pulling off 4K short videos, so waiting a month or 2 is possible, but PAINFUL! 😂

    I love Apple. Used them for 23 years but I'm disgusted by their price gouging. $600 for 1.5 TB storage and $400 for 16 GB of ram. You used to be able to upgrade yourself. I have an Intel Mac mini and iMac. I recently built a PC. A Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB cost $120 and 32 GB ram $100. $220 compared to $1000. Doesn't even make sense any more. If Apple keeps going this way I'm done. It makes the second hand products like the M1 worthless. You used to be able to pick up an older Mac and upgrade it to get a 3-5 more years out of it. I've seen M1 Mac mini's, a 256 GB and 8 GB ram selling for 300. And people don't want them. It's gonna kill the resale value on these things and bring down the value of machines with upgraded storage and ram. I hope they change but it doesn't look like it.

    IMHO You're going about your storage all wrong. If you want to keep your mac mini operating at it's full potential as long as possible you should be installing only your software on the OS hard drive. Everything else should be working off external hard drives.
    You're external.....It doesn't matter how fast the drive is if your connection is only 10gbs. That means you're really only going to get about 800mb/s real world read and write speeds. You need a thunderbolt enclosure if you want to realize the full speed of your external NVME drive. They can do around 5000mb/s.
    Storage...only software on the computer. Make sure you get whatever the lowest configuration of storage on the mac that dual channel for the faster read/write speeds. I think it's 1tb for the new mac m2's
    An external thunderbolt hard drive for current projects that is basically just always connected to your computer. These things are fast!
    A Raid 1 2 disk enclosure for archving your drives with slower 7200rpm media. I bought two 16tb for $250 each! Should last a while...
    Then NAS in RAID 5 for another backup and a way too access all your files remotely.

    • @TheAppleHelpline
      @TheAppleHelpline  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve tried to edit off external drives in the past, which had the “best” read/write for the price, and while most edits are fine the ones that got really heavy I began to have issues. I never looked into picking up a Thunder l bolt enclosure. I do only keep software on my machine. When I edit a video I do have the project on the machine because I feel like it edits much smoother and the machine utilizes the processing much better. I do have a NAS with about 36TB where I store every project.
      My other totally irrational feeling is having a bunch of stuff plugged into the machine cluttering up the desk.. lol..
      I appreciate the info and will def look into the thunderbolt drive as an option to save money instead of upgrading the storage from apple
