"I think there is something fascinating about plucked sound. The plucked instruments - most of them, if not all - come from the east, and perhaps it's to do with eastern mysticism and religious experience, but plucked sound has a remarkable quality because the actual pluck itself is the apex of a sound and thereafter it dies. And if you are playing, say a phrase of six or seven notes, you are dealing, really, with six or seven births and six or seven deaths.
We hate death and we don't know how to deal with it. So in fact, we sustain our lives as long as possible. The excitement is also in the spaces between the notes and therein lies the poetry of plucked sound."
    - Juliam Bream

I came to the classical guitar late in life (60) and now I am trying to learn these three preludes. For inspiration I listen to as many different recordings here on TH-cam as I can - and not one of them comes close to Julian Bream - not so much for technical brilliance (a given) but really for interpretation - his playing is unbelievably evocative. Such a supreme talent - sadly missed and -(only) in my opinion - never surpassed. I am so grateful that, through mediums such as TH-cam, his talent will live on down the ages.

I saw him live around 30 years ago. He played as well, or even better than you would have expected. Very loud and powerful, his guitar carried better than most I’ve ever heard and he entertained a large crowd with ease and grace.
      A great artist.

Considering the fact, that he gave this concert in this church, close to where he lived in England, in preparation for a tour in the U.S.A., just to see if he was strong enough to play, after an automobile accident, where he almost completely destroyed his right elbow. He had to nearly from scratch relearn how to use his arm, and he'd been in a sling for 5 weeks up to this point. Before which, he'd only played a few minutes a day to rebuild his strength.Well, guys and gals, I'd say this was pretty damn impressive for a cripple! Julian Bream was a one of a kind human being / guitarist / musician. A very determined and disciplined person who gave his all.Thank you Julian.

I totally agree with you on every point.I’ve been listening to Bream since I was 14-I’m now 75 and he thrills me just as much now as then.Suite Compostelana is an all time favourite.I also love the interpretation by Segovia although compared technically to Jules he sounds as if he’s playing in oven gloves!!What links them however is the passion they both had for the classical guitar.Bream always said that John Williams was technically his superior.Who am I to dispute that? He should know. However Williams just doesn’t move me anything like Bream does.He and the instrument are one as is Segovia although a lesser talent. The soprano Maria Callas was the same.A flawed voice at times but the ability to convey passion unlike any other singer. The ability to evoke feelings is of course a gift.As you say TH-cam is a tremendous help. I don’t know if you’re familiar with Breams video “ Guitarra ! “ from 1984 about the history of the guitar in Spain but I recommend it highly. I’ve lived here for over 50 years and this film really gets to the heart of things.I’m pretty sure it’s available on TH-cam.
