    They are definately a Rock Band. Anything other than that it gets more difficult. Trying to Pigeon Hole the music of Band Maid on the way down the Pigeon Hole (did you see what I did there) is not easy to do. Which is why we like them so much. It's Band Maid doing Band Maid Things (Chase Carneson c 2020). But it is natural for newbies to try and catagorise their music, but you can't do it in one word. The genre is Band Maid.

    Yeah, everyone just calls this "metal". It is and it isn't. BAND-MAID just can't play one single genre at a time. That's why they are so damn special. They have the ability to blend various genres into every song they produce. Some songs might have more punk than metal, while others might have more jazz than rock. 'Rinne' has all of those styles going on thru out the song. You just can't nail this band down to one style. Labels only last a minute or two before the structure of the songs switch to something else. Just gotta take each song as it's own thing.
    It's BAND-MAID doing BAND-MAID things.

    The "video" was shot on 8mm film, as suggested by Saiki (lead singer). She is a fan of horror movies and in particular a movie called 'Rinne' or Reincarnation. The grainy nature of 8mm film lends itself this unsettling look. And the hole at the edge are sprocket holes used to move the film through the camera. I'm not sure if they recreated those in post or just exposed the film from edge to edge. Normally you wouldn't see the sprocket holes as would be matted off.
    I like the effect. I like everything about the video. Guess it's because I'm old enough to still remember what film was like. ;-)

    I was just looking at a video where a group of musicians were going through an article in some online music magazine where they were defining all the various forms of "metal" and listing various bands as examples. They were amused by 1) the vast array of labels 2) how much overlap there was and 3) how much they disagreed with some of the definitions and examples. By the end they were wondering why there wasn't "beach core" (which turns out to be a fashion term) like "Miserlou" played at 220 and dripping with distortion (but NO reverb!). I guess terms like this are useful for conversation but it doesn't seem like there is universal agreement. "Rock and Roll" were originally verbs that referred to the ladies and their clients upstairs at "The Rising Sun" but by the late '60s and early '70s there was "hard rock" was a noun, and then "metal" was a form of "hard rock." Whatever. I just want music touches my heart and moves me.

    I have to agree with you on the Punk Rock DNA with the Maids. They have been steeped in it from the start. Just look at some of the stances that Kanami takes with her guitar playing. Right from the opening, & at 1:19, for example. I slam danced my way through the Punk era back in the 70's with bands like The Ramones, Black Flag, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Saints, etc. But BAND-MAID fuse it in with so many other styles in just such a brilliant way.

    Not a filter. It was shot on 8mm film. 'Rinne' is also the title of a Japanese movie that was also shot on 8mm film. Rinne just means reincarnation. Is it Punk? Yeah, a little. I would say Thrash Metal influenced. Interesting you'd say Punk. Most people say Metal, even though BAND-MAID consider themselves to be Hard Rock. Another Metal influenced song would be 'Different'. And that would be a Pigeon Hole, since Miku's last name means Little Pigeon. Pigeons in Japan don't coo, they karuppo, which is why she's always ending sentences in Po.

Pop-punk, heavy metal, straight pop, jazz, hell, even rap show up on occasion. I don't know if you can find it because it's not an official video, but there's a live version of "Moratorium" out there that's wonderfully all over the place. Stadium rock anthem? Yep. Hard rock? 😂 You didn’t like the music video? Lol no way, man. It’s 100% on point with the sort of video cliches it’s replicating. I love it cuz it fits this song perfectly. It matches the flavor of the track to a T.
    I think of their music videos the same way I think of something like the Fast and Furious movies; they’re not breaking the mold and a lot of it is cliche for the song they’re doing but it’s just so on point and so much big dumb fun you can’t help but laugh and smile. Look at warning; fast cars and fireballs for a song that sounds like it came from racing soundtrack? Hilarious dumb fun that perfectly fits the song. Thrill does the simple black and white and red similar to white stripes to match the relatively simple early 00’s era pop-rock, almost Donnas-esque sound of that time? Silly fun and completely accurate. People think of cliche they think it’s bad, but it’s not, because when you do cliche with gusto and effort, it just lets you shut your brain off and enjoy the astounding positive vibes the music offers.

  • @interstellardave
    @interstellardave 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    This is NOT a personal criticism… please don’t take it that way. So, I have become more and more irritated as reactors try to pin a genre on Band Maid. Almost everyone does it, so that’s why I’m not picking on any one person. It bothers me because the most common ones are “metal” and, while I love some metal, I know they are not really metal. What they do is incorporate metal elements without sounding formulaic.
    Then there’s “pop”… and I think that so much pop music is crap, IMO, that it’s a terrible label for them. What they do, though, is incorporate a strong pop sensibility that makes even their heaviest, fastest, most progressive, material come across as very catchy and accessible.
    Lastly there’s punk”… and I think of punk as being relatively simplistic, and that’s not them at all. They may often have that punk sound but they are SO much more than that label, IMO. So, many of us love the “Band Maid doing Band Maid things” statement because it’s accurate in it’s vagueness. A more standard label that works-especially with their newer material-is “progressive”, because they’re starting to display those things that typify progressive music more and more, including mixing and matching of genres.

    • @Parker--
      @Parker-- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well that sounds a lot like your own personal hangups and bias. ‘It’s not pop because lots of pop is crap’ is a sophomoric attitude to take. There’s a lot of metal, rock, punk, progressive and tons of other genres that is absolute crap as well. Actually almost all music is crap and the only stuff you hear is the top 1% that wasn’t filtered out for one reason or another and even then alot of that is crap as well. There is no genre of music without crap in it. Punk isn’t about being simple for that matter either, its about drum patterns and chords played. And progressive really only applies to two of their songs, BH and No God.
      Now I will agree B-M is not a metal band, tho this song is primarily metal, but they are rock and they are what hard rock would have evolved into after blending all the rock and punk and metal (not nu-metal) had all those genres not completely died out by late 00’s. They’re a modern rock band that takes risks which means they are alone in their sound no matter which sound that may be.

  • @Parker--
    @Parker-- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I would say this isn’t heavy metal, it’s a bit more thrash metal which does have an influence from the aggressive punk scene of the time. Very early early 90’s thrash vibes.
    Of course, B-M tends to not just stick to the confines of one genre and like to evolve the song as it goes.

Does it sound to you like Band-Maid? The greatest punk-rock bands are Ramones, Sex Pistols, Nirvana and the Clash - just listen to their music, it's nothin like Band-Maid, not even close. I'd say, from musical and lyrics perspective Band-Mid is kind of opposite to punk-rock: multilayered instrumentation/riffing with complex harmonies, song structures, constantly changing rhythmic patterns and deep philosophical/psychological lyrics.

By the '90s and 2000s punk had evolved, like metal had, and started incorporating other elements. Band-Maid might approach Green Day-style punk, but Kanami Tono is too non-conformist to ever stick to one style entirely, not to mention MISA and Akane.
