This is the first Tesla accessory on your channel that’s an IMMEDIATE buy for me. I honestly can’t think of why I wouldn’t. The price is very reasonable. Installation is easy. The product seems to work well. The product is very much useful for those of us who frequently use our frunk.
Why you wouldn't? When it fails, you'll lose access to the frunk. And I do mean "when", not "if". This is like version 4 of the product, previous versions had major design faults which blocked owners access to the frunk when it failed. I doubt 4th time is lucky with this cheap crap. I even saw one website selling this telling the customer not to put anything "important" in the frunk if you fit this. Says it all really. Also the safety aspect of this. Getting your fingers caught there will be no joke.
I just recently installed this soft close motor. I didn’t install the brass metal shim and unfortunately I had to use some force to get the frunk to close. Today I went back to my install and added the brass metal shim. What a big difference!!! You need to add the brass shim. Now I just gently let the frunk hood down, it touches the sensor on the electric motor and closes without force.
19:56 I imagine the mechanism doesn’t activate from such a light closure is for safety. Can you imagine the frunk closing on your finger when you didn’t intend to close the frunk? The gap when you close the frunk lid a little hard is not wide enough for a finger, but it is wide enough for a finger when you lightly close the lid.
Is there a fuse on the positive side wire? If not I would highly recommend putting a very low amp fuse on the positive line. This could act as a safety. If anything gets stuck in the trunk while closing the motor will pull more amps. With a low amp fuse you could hope in this situation the fuse just blows and nothing else gets broken. Really I'd like this product more if it had a current sensor on it that stopped the motor if the current went too high (something is stuck).
The simplicity is surprising and I think it's well priced but only with the discount. I don't use the frunk because of the closing hassle. With this unit installed, I think the frunk would be my first choice for storing groceries. I'll take a wait and see approach to see if any updates happen. This item should get very, very popular.
Thank you! I like they priced this well. I have seen companies charge hundreds for product that barely does anything. I hope they keep making this better.
Thanks Shiva. Did this one today and you video helped a lot. Easy install - only thing to remember and you said it, the two need to be flush. This confused me a little. Your videos are super helpful.
Nice explanation of the original operation, added auto closure and installation details. Good safety pre-caution too, except for reader may want to use a tool instead of fingers to test. Thank you!
This is soft close, not auto close, not hands-free. Your videos are very thorough. I agree that the soft close function should be upgraded. The force required to close the frunk by hand isn't much more than pushing down heavily to activate the soft close switch. I'll wait for the next generation.
Thanks for the nice install review. But I want to comment on your suggestions. You cannot have the spring on the sensor too light or a contact sensor because when you open the front the weight of the hood is still applying pressure to the sensor and if it's too light it may just close again on you. Same thing with a contact sensor when you unlatch the frunk the latch is still touching the automatic closer sensor and it would just close again.
That is good point, thanks. I didn't think about it. Their new version apparently auto closes after a minute if left at that slightly open position. It won't close if you open the frunk within that minute but still supports the soft close.
You may need to install the "gold" plate. I've installed a similar product and could softly place the hood down. It should also auto close in about 60 seconds if frunk is accidentally opened.
I just received my order and the gold plate was not included. Is this needed? I reached out to Tlyard and they just send an install video which did not include this item.
Excellent product. I would add that, since youre having to draw power from the battery, and have a way to detect when the frunk is open, you could add optional conection for a light strip, to have light inside the frunk then its opened. Depending on the endswitch you are already using, all it would take is a single conector! Great design btw. Very good engineering mindset at work there.
I got this from the same delivery tlyard. but mine looks verry different. Motor looks weaker and that control box is gone... Install was easy and it works good. No more greasy fingers on my black paint ;)
I installed a similar product on mine. I noticed you still installed the metal plate part. I did on mine too. However, you didn't really go into the specifics of how to install it correctly. There is a curved bit on that plate that needs to be bent inward, which you didn't show. Anyway, if it is working for you, then I guess it is not necessary. Mine is working really well and I can simply gently let mine down and it will close. Yours is probably a misalignment somewhere...mine works perfectly so far. And if mine is unlocked and left as it for 90 secs, it will relock itself.
Good video Shiva. You really hav3 filled a nice niche by dedicating your videos to instructional reviews. Even though everything is free to you, you provide honest reviews. Obviously you couldn’t do all the reviews if you had to purchase all of them. Thank you!
Thank you Shiva, very good explanation. However the positive terminal on my model 3 2024 is very different from what you show. There is no way to connect my positive cable on that "flat" terminal. Any ideas on how to proceed? Any special attachment i should install? Thanks.
Does it use a different sensor to indicate the Frunk is completely closed? I am having an issue with the Frunk sensor and I wonder if this product will assure that the frunk is closed.
I would be the reason Tesla doesn't have this feature stock is because of laws that require the front hood to be latched in a specific way and also for safety concerns cuz if your finger is under the hood when you use this motor the motor isn't going to know your finger is in there. Also if something is blocking the hood this motor might just keep pulling down until it breaks something.
YES... That is currently my issue. I can not get my frunk to unlatch. I have a Tesla service appointment in July to try to get in. Can you imagine if I had groceries in there???
Yeah this doesn't seem to have any pressure sensor to stop like the normal auto frunks do but it does need to be lowered quite a bit that I doubt anyone can insert this finger through that tight small opening. Nevertheless, it is definitely a concern. Thank you my friend.
Yes, that doesn't change. The mechanism that opens the frunk is still OEM, this just adds a motor to pull the latch down (emulates pushing down by hand). Thanks
@@ShivaSapkota --- BUT.... if that mechanism jams (which mine currently is) the frunk will not open because Tlyard's device is 'holding' the latch down. The emergency wires won't release the third party equipment
Yes its disappointing that tesla doesn't just include something like this. As for it closing just when the hood is down, the issue would be when you unlock the frunk the frunk stays down until you lift it and it would just auto close as soon as it opens. I'm sure they dont want people unlocking the frunk sticking their fingers in to lift it and have it auto close on the finger.
Nice video and explanation of this latch but I'd rather pay a little more and purchase a different unit that will make the frunk open\close automatically just like the trunk does, just my 2¢. Maybe Tesla will offer a retrofit somewhere in the near future 🤞.
I bought this in January and did the install myself on my 23 Model 3. I just returned from a 5,200 mi road trip. The suction close worked great UNTIL it didn't. I put my duffle bag in the frunk and closed it. No Problem. When we reached our hotel 14 hours later, the frunk would not open. When I try to open the frunk with the app or in the car, you can hear the latch release but the hood does not release. I CAN NOT GET INTO MY FRUNK. I believe the suction device is holding down the hood latch and will not let go. It isn't the car, it's the suction device from Tlyard. There is no way to get into the trunk. Like I said, the hood is trying to be released but the suction is not letting go. I have no way to access the suction device....there is no manual release for the suction device. BUYER BEWARE!!!! I have a service appointment in July for Tesla to try to get in....I'm praying for an easy fix...... BUYER BEWARE.
Hey my friend, I am so sorry to hear that. That is very concerning. Did you use the gold piece that came with the kit? On mine, I didn't use the piece and the top bar (latch sensor) doesn't hold the latch at all, it simply slides on the side and pushes the switch. Please keep me posted on how it goes with Tesla. I appreciate your sharing the experience.
@@theDougAngle Hmmm okay. I wonder if they changed that latch piece for 3 then. Thanks again. I will also reach out to Tlyard proactively and see if we can get some clarity. Please let me know how the Tesla service appointment goes and what they say. Thanks
@@ShivaSapkota Thank you. They say to 'pull the cable' but that cable is for the Tesla portion of the trunk release, not their motor release. I'll take any help I can get for sure!!
@@theDougAngleUse a plastic pry bar and use it to slightly pry the front open and at the same time hit the drunk release. When there is enough room to slide your fingers under the frunk lid, pull up. If it is still stuck, pull up while hitting the frunk release again. You may have to use a little force to get the lock mechanism to pull the soft close devices cable up. The soft close cable is probably holding the latch down. Maybe your electrical connections are loose or just bad. Maybe cut the connectors off and put on new ones. China is notorious for bad electrical connections. Other than that, you've probably installed it incorrectly and it is binding.
Thank you! Bought if for my Highland half a year ago, but did not come with manual or anything. So this is probably enough for me to dare to install it myself. I got the "gold" part too, so wondering if I do not need it either?
I don't get it , if someone is going to go through the trouble of installing this , such as myself , why would I install a frunk that I would need to be there to put it down so it could do its thing , where I can just install the full self closing frunk , from the center screen, home , app etc. Don't see the point.
Wait.... So you mean to tell me for about $200, I have to open and lift the trunk as usual AND I have to close the trunk AS USUAL, the only difference is that last step where you secure it closed is automated?? LOL WTF. Why?!

Tesla should include a powered open/close frunk on all models at this point.
Agreed! Thank you.
At the very least they should have an option to have it installed at the service center
