The entire "So" album by Peter Gabriel is a classic masterpiece! One of my other favorites from this album,"Big Time", is a satirical look at overindulgence, greed and narcissism in the world. Although this album was released in the mid eighties, it is still as relevant now as it was then! Considering what is going on in our societies current climate, maybe even more so.

I love it, and I love Big Time too. Sooooo 80's calling out the bullshyte. Living through that time, there was nothing there that was remotely exaggerated. Of course, you'll see that in every time, but in that time it was celebrated without self-consciousness, only triumphalism. Futurama has a great "80's guy" episode too, nailed it again. Those were scary, not at all innocent times. You're right in finding the echo in today's times too, in which triumphalism isn't just celebrated above the crushing of all others, but worse yet, taken as unremarkable and just desserts for the rightfully disadvantaged.

The way he sings the word "inside" with how the word fades at the end... the man is a one of a kind talent. There are many good singers out there, no need to glorify one over another. But PG has a voice that is so unique, I've never heard anybody who sounds anything like him. Just a rich quality to his voice that is absolutely un-teachable.

Peter Gabriel is the *best*. He started as the lead singer of Genesis, when Phil Collins was still just the drummer. Once he was out on his own his sound really started to include a world music vibe to it, which is awesome, different singing styles and rhythms, very multicultural. It's great to see people from all over the world making music together, like a unifying language. The vibe of that song is very free and open. I hope you do check out more of his stuff!

  • @globalhumanism

Peter Gabriel is one of the greatest and most underrated singer/ songwriters in the English language in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He had some radio hits in the 1980s, when he was one of the pioneers of electronic music at a time when electronic music was coming into style, but then he evolved beyond what the majority of radio listeners could appreciate, and most of his music before and since is simply too good for the radio. I first heard a shorter version of this song in high school, in the 1980s, when I bought his most commercially successful album, titled So, on cassette. It got some radio play too. In fact I was very young and had never heard of him before, and it was hearing this song on the radio that made me spend my allowance on the cassette. I couldn't tell if he was signing about looking in the eyes of a lover or of God (he has since said that he meant it to be deliberately ambiguous, so that you could hear it either way), but the backup vocals by Senegalese musician Youssou N'Dour on the original studio cut literally sent chills up my spine, and the song made me feel like I was in the presence of God in my tiny basement bedroom in the middle of a crap childhood. I've followed Gabriel ever since. "So" helped me make it through high school, and the album "Us" helped me make it through college and the years after (plus "Passion" -- the soundtrack to The Last Temptation Of Christ -- and his first four albums). If you want to try another song of his, I'd recommend, 2. "Secret World," either the quiet original studio cut from "Us" or the more upbeat version from "Secret World Live"; 3. "Biko," about the South African anti-apartheid activist Stephen Biko, the live version from "Athens Live 1987" is probably the best version out there, and the original studio cut from "Peter Gabriel 3" (nicknamed "Melt") is also good; 4. "Here Comes The Flood," not the original studio version but the stripped-down piano-only version from the compilation album "Shaking The Tree," 5. "Wallflower," the original version from "Peter Gabriel 4," which is sung on behalf of all political prisoners around the world; 6. "The Washing Of The Water" -- I'd suggest the transcendent, "spiritual" - sounding version from "Secret World Live," and the slow, emotional studio cut on "Us" is also good ... I could keep going on and on ... Solsbury Hill, San Jacinto, Lay Your Hands On Me, Mercy Street, Don't Give Up, Red Rain, Come Talk To Me, Love To Be Loved, The Blood Of Eden, Fourteen Black Paintings, Growing Up, I Grieve, More Than This, Party Man, In The Sun, The Book Of Love, and many more ... reply to this message if you want the best version for any of the ones I just listed; also, check out the versions of "In Your Eyes" from "Athens Live 1987," in which N'Dour has a more prominent role, and Gabriel & N'Dour's very different version from the 25th Anniversary Special Edition of So; finally, avoid "Sledgehammer," which is probably his most well-known song among people who don't know his music people, but the worst thing he ever put out IMO ... it was just his attempt to make a mindless pop radio hit and it succeeded for that purpose but doesn't hold up as actual music, compared to almost everything else he's done. Anyway, have fun.

All Gabriel's performances after the So album were just pure expressions of joy, and emphasized the musicians with him instead of himself. I got to see him in 2003, and it was still as joyous as these shows from the 90s, just music and happiness for their own sake! Not many Westerners in the pop-music era ever achieved such a thing as Gabriel did with his tours!

(Not that his earlier shows weren't amazing in their own right, even going back to his Genesis days. He just seemed to drop all ego after So, which was ironically his biggest commercial hit by far.)

I've been a Peter Gabriel fan for a long time, and the entire tape (DVD now) of this concert is awesome. I just wanted to give a shout-out to his band, all formidable musicians in their own right. In particular, I see that five-string in the corner, so I thought you might recognize the dude with the shaved head and mustache playing the Barbie Flesh Pink 5-string Stingray. He's the amazing Tony Levin, veteran of over 500 albums, including some by John Lennon, Paul Simon, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, David Bowie, and the list goes on. He's played with Peter since his first solo album. Phenomenal bassist. The female vocalist is Paula Cole, who went on to have a solo career of her own. Tony played on her most famous album as well (This Fire). Manu Katche on drums, Jean-Claude Naimro on keys, and of course David Rhodes on Guitar.
And they seem to be having so much fun. I would encourage anyone to watch the whole concert.

At the time I was a few years fresh out of high school, 22-24, I heard this song called 'Biko' sung by Peter Gabriel. It was very haunting, as it described the death of Mr. Biko, and it became a protest song against the apartheid regime in South Africa. Then the movie 'Biko' came out. I thought he was an activist, and maybe in creating this song he became fond of the African and Brazillian imstruments I see at his concerts, also the sound of African percussion and language. I remember he held a concert I dont know where, and the stadium chanted the song. He doesn't include the song anymore nowadays I think, but you never know, I think it will remind people if he sang it now and then. I knew some other songs sung by him through MTV. But a few years later his next album and hit 'Sledgehammer' was all over the radio and MTV. I think it was #1 on Billboard, I loved it, makes you dance. I think it was 1986. Then I heard 'In Your Eyes' on an FM station, (same album) and from THAT MOMENT TILL TODAY, as God is my witness, this song had pierced my heart and forever fills that hole with love, courage, bountiful happiness that only this song can give me, makes me feel peace in mind, soul and spirit. I bought the album 'So' and it still is one of the few albums in my collection that I fell in love with every song, but I needed THIS song and 'Don't Give Up' (same album) on repeat with headphones, so very loud. No matter how Peter switches it up over the past 30 years when HBO specials or concerts around the world were televised,(no such thing as computers), this is his signature song that the audience is waiting for, they love that he might save it for last, I think, to send you home with that good vibe in your heart, you feel complete. This live version is different from past live versions over the years, its awesome, I love it, I miss listening to his voice, I think I will look for and view the whole concert. Thank you RM. 💖🌺

It'd be "magical" except that, unlike magic, this song & its loving message is so real!

At one time, Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins were in the band Genesis together - Phil the drummer and Peter the lead singer. When Peter left Genesis to start his own solo career, Phil Collins took over lead vocals, then Phil developed his own solo career, etc. Grew up with this music in the 80s! Both lyrics and music in this song are so beautiful!

Gabriel was the original singer for the band Genesis. I first saw then in a university in Ontario Canada in 1976. They were, at that time, a very progressive band. The band themselves (including Phil Collins on drums) played behind a curtain. Gabriel performed wearing a series of masks, I don't recall ever seeing his face. For a high school kid in a fairly conservative town, it was eye opening. I've followed him ever since. This song and the musical era it represents, represents some of his greatest music

I have loved this song since the first time I heard it on the radio. However, this song saved my life. Seriously. I had suffered a terrible tragedy. My brain, my body, my everything shut down. I couldn't hear people talking. I didn't know where I was. But, I could hear this song playing perfectly, beautifully with such clarity that it saved my life. I heard this song over and over in my mind for about 3 days. But, as in the lyrics, "All my instincts, they returned" and the eyes I could see was my soulmate waiting for me to "return". He never left my side. There really are no words to express how important this song has been in my life. And, it is proof that music can really heal your mind.

Peter Gabriel was the first singer for the band Genesis. When Peter left, they were auditioning for new vocalists and, after a while, Phil Collins said that he already sang backing vocals, so he knew all the words. He tried out for the part and became their vocalist, in addition to playing the drums. Phil eventually left as well.
Another song to check out with a similar laid back feeling would be In The House of Stone and Light by Martin Page.

The woman, Paula Cole, went on to have a successful solo career - short career, but she had hit songs. I knew who she was from watching this concert so many times. About a year ago I bought this concert on DVD. The whole concert was great. This song was given a showy, extravagant treatment in the concert due to its popularity at the time.
