As stupid as that play looked , it wasn't as bad as everyone makes it to be , that season 0 people intercepted the ball from the 1 yard , lynch that year also struggled at 1 yard situations mostly on 3rd and 4th down. The play call was good , it was just a really good defensive play by Butler. Not to mention everyone was expecting lynch to get the ball so they gambled and it just didn't work out.
Andi X Nope..... Butler made the play... The best play actually was not to run just due to stats and metrics and whatever.... Logic defying and damn sure important. But not top 10 worthy
When I was watching it, I was like "What can be worse than the butt fumble?" But, I was wrong. The running the wrong way was absolutely worse than the butt fumble
Not really. Most of these weren't awful because the opponent did something good they were one side doing something dumb (with a few just regular mess ups that were really funny).
Other fun fact for #7: A receiver that would play for the college Jackson graduated from would do the exact same thing, drop the ball at the one a few years later.
New addition to this list today with the patriots staching defeat out of the jaws of victory by throwing a touchdown pass to the other team on a play where you just needed to get down to force ot
that's not a play when you DON'T do something. But it should be about the dumbest coaching decision ever..not sure if there is a vid for that but yeah that would be number 1.
It WAS a play, a passing play instead of a running play. Still a play though. But it wasn't stupid imo, Lynch did NOT have a good record on first and goal during the season. The Seahawks scored a lot more with passing plays on first and goal compared to running it on first and goal. It was more risky, but it was the higher percentage play... Patriots got lucky with the interception.
I actually thought it was a brilliant idea to throw at the moment. You'd expect that the pats were expecting a run, so you throw it short. They just happened to make a play on it, but it could've easily been a TD. Butler had to squeeze in for it and borderline pull pass interference to get it.
To be fair if people actually watched Seahawks before bandwagoning after they won the Super Bowl the Seahawks ALWAYS ran audibles at the 1 yard line. Since everyone always had to blitz the Seahawks because Lynch was so good at getting the few yards the Seahawks would just call a pass and throw it out to Lockett or Kearse since they're were always open. If he had made the pass everyone would've said it was genius but since it got picked people act like it was a dumb move
#7 should be #1 on the list. Idiot player cares more about showing off and trying to look cool than making sure he gets into the end zone. This is less forgivable than any of these other plays.
I have seen and played a lot of football and the Colts fake punt is hands down the worst play I have ever seen at any, ANY, level of the sport of football. It was the worst play before the ball even was snapped, the worst formation I have ever seen, and then they actually ran a play from there. The dude just snapped it directly under the center with no blockers and 3 defensive players less than a yard from him hahahaha I couldn't believe what I had seen. Just amazed so many coaches let that make it to the field and no one argued against it. Someone had to be fired for that play.
The goal was to confuse the D, have 10 guys run over to cover the mess of guys to the side, leaving one guy in front of the center. Then it's easy for the blocker to wall off the defender off to one side while the runner taking the snap runs behind him. 3 guys covered the center, so they were supposed to take the 5 yard delay of game penalty. It wouldn't have been the worst play ever if the ball hadn't been snapped, it would have just been a 5 yard penalty on a failed attempt at trickery.
+Mitch Jestice no it was designed to get the Patriots to have too many men on the field. Look up pat mcafee on bob n tom he explains it. The guy was was snapping the ball was only in bc the guy they practiced it w got injured so he wasn't sure what to do. It was all a big mis communication they shouldn't have tried a cheap play like that against the pats the pats prob designed the play themselves
I've seen a worse play. 7th grade modified football the center snaps it over the qbs head and it goes right to our coach bc at that level they are on the field with us. he picked it up and took a knee lmao. we were losing at least 50 to 0 so it didn't even matter
That Colts play is absolutely legendary. As a Luck era Colts fan, I was lucky enough to catch this moment live and it was it didn't disappoint. I got more entertainment value from that single play than I did from all of the very limited success the team saw for the entire rest of the season. The best part is after the play when the camera pans in on Chuck Pagano's clueless face and his look is just like "ohh... so that just happened... hmm.. I pictured it going so differently in my head" Pagano was an absolute legend as the HC. He has such a hapless, clueless, confused expression all the time and, while they tell you not to judge a book by its cover or person by how they look, Pagano's facial expressions were pretty much always consistent with the horrors unfolding on the field. Still, out of all the horrible coaching and horrible execution, that play stands above the rest. Truly an instant classic. Ahhh... good times, good times
Holy shit the Superbowl play wasn't a bad play on the hawks, it was an amazing play on Malcolm Butler. These plays are stupid plays where someone fumbled or fucked up, Superbowl is nowhere near that.
"Leon Lett! Nooo! Not Leon Lett." I laughed out loud because I remember that game, as well as Lett's fumble in the Super Bowl. Gave me a belly laugh as a kid, and does the same now.
@@Ckdude100 If the center doesn't snap the ball (like the pay was designed), they get a delay of game penalty, replay 4th down 5 yards back and punt it. That was the plan but.....
Um yeah like there was a huge fake punt fail for redskins vs giants in the past decade. The punt that wasnt punted out of bounds by giants vs Eagles in 2010. Almost any play in the super bowl micked as stupor bowl colts vs cowboys.

In Mark Sanchez's defense, it was big Vince Wilfork that threw the Jets linemen into Sanchez, its one of his favorite tricks and the retired veteran had been doing it for years with the patriots. Incredibly talented big man #75
For fuck sake, the Super Bowl play wasn't a bad play call, if had good thought behind it. Defense expecting a run, try's to fool them with a pass and Malcom Butler read the play perfectly. Wasn't a dumb play, it was just a lucky strike on the defense
No, it wasn't a bad play call... it was just the stupidest, jesus-fuckedup, goddamn-christ way lose a Super Bowl. Even Holmgren wouldn't have been shitbrained enough to tempt that. A fade, maybe. But not that. Epic fail if there ever was one.
+Sinbreaker: if it was thrown lower, yeah. The play worked all season long until this execution of it. So Belicheck/Butler deserve their credit for being prepared for that situation. Still you have RB and a QB/RB who is mobile enough to buy time - with one TO left. Other options were available for pass attempts.
It was a bad call. Hell if you're going to pass the ball, bring in a power lineup and play action. If you show pass Belichick can now force you do what he wants you to do anyways. NE knew exactly what he was doing there.
I love this list and that my Patriots were responsible for humiliating these teams, especially the NY Jokes! Ever notice how they always make the list of worst teams or worst plays in history? No coincidences here at all!
What about superbowl 49 when you're on the goal line with the best running back in the league but for some stupid reason you decide to pass and throw away the game
Kosta Thomas debatable, Lynch was definitely the best running back when it came to goal line performance, and he was an outstanding rusher, in the top 3 arguably. But the stats don't lie. That season, DeMarco Murray had 500 more rushing yards, tied with Lynch for TDs, averaged 4.7 per attempt while Lynch did not even make top 10, averaged 30+ more yards a game than Lynch, and had roughly 500 more yards from scrimmage than Lynch. Murray was the best running back of that season because, as you can see, he was number 1 in all categories for a RB except for the tie in rushing TDs
+Dominique Johnson It's evidence that he more than likely couldn't, of course you can't 100% surely say he couldn't have, but according to the stats, it's a low percentage chance that he could
Love it, I forgot about some of these plays. Sometimes I used to wonder if their helmet was on too tight.....idiot plays. I love watching the coach stare at their player (s) that did something dumb.
that Brett Farve interception isn't a bad play, it was a perfect pass but the reciever just waited for the ball to get there and instead Tracy Porter got their before
WRs definitely dont get blamed enough for interceptions but Sidney Rice is trying to make a tackle while its being picked off. This is not one of those times. Still not the 8th worst play of all time.
It was a terrible call by Farve, just because it was in the direction of the reciever doesn't make it a good pass. It was across his body and he was rolling the other way. It's Farve's fault it got intercepted
I'm a Steelers fan, but let me explain the Colts fake punt. What was supposed to happen was to throw off the Patriots special teams with the 9 guys lined up to the right, and then have a hard count and not snap the ball and draw them offsides to pick up the first, and if that doesn't work, just cut your losses, take the delay of game and go for a normal punt. But what happened, the guy snapping, and the guy receiving were backups because the starters were hurt earlier in the half, and didn't get any of the reps in practice and had to be coached up right before the play happened, and misunderstood. So in theory it's a foolproof play, but the people running it had 0 clue what was supposed to happen.
+nigga851 During the season, he scored one touchdown out of five attempts on the goal line... Would you bet all the money in the world on a 20% odds of winning?
+Sinbreaker He would have gotten three runs, that's actually a 60% chance. Either way, statistics are only one aspect of the game. You also have to take into account positioning, the enemy team, drive, etc. It was one of the dumbest play calls (intentional, or not) in modern football history.
So worst plays ever must mean after the year 2000 because there were plenty before 2000 other than 3! Whoever made up this list needs to do some research.
I thought Leon Lett should have been No 1, but I forgot about Marshall running the ball back the wrong way. All the others were just dumb luck, but Lett and Marshall?!?!
#1: Also, technically, the direction he threw the ball should have counted as a forward lateral since the play was still live, resulting in extra yardage on the kickoff.
The Whiff, by Marcus Williams (1-14-18) has got to be number one now. 1) It was a playoff game. 2) It cost the Saints a sure win on the game's last play. 3) It was ridiculously improbable since the Vikings were over 60 yards away with no timeouts and ten seconds on the clock. 4) Except for Pisarcik's botched kneel-down, it was the easiest of all these plays to make. All he had to do was keep his eyes open and tackle the receiver in bounds, and the game would've been over! Williams will forever be the Bill Buckner of the NFL.
OK I am only a new NFL fan and I get that the Sanchez play was bad, but is it worse than the Colts fake field goal? No way for me. Also the missed FG, they didn't even show the worst play?
The Butt fumble is #2.
Think about it.
😂😂
funny cause that play turned to shit lol.

So you mean the Browns have a play book?!?
Dishonorable mention goes to Dan Orlovsky running out of the end zone. That play more than anything epitomized the Lions' 0-16 season.
eh I don’t blame Dan he had Jared “Culinary Academy” Allen running after him
Never forget
The Sanchez fumble was hilarious.
Mark Batarina why hasn't that became a meme

worst call by a coach is Seattle passing on half yardline with beastmode and timeouts.

Nice marmot. sos I have to be friends or and 3 I have a gg have a great long time
Yep. Biggest idiot of them all here, but I would put it to 2 instead. #1 is a classic, it's just mortifying! 😂
Especially after he'd done it once before.
Leon Lett coming out of nowhere to dive at the ball surrounded by Fins makes me laugh every time. He had no clue what to do.
Ball Ball 😅
Patriots lateral needs to be added to this list. Also Orlovsky running out of the endzone

It just makes me laugh every time. It should go into the top 10 funniest plays in NFL history !! Haha LOL
Poor Jim Marshall. He played for twenty years, and was a two-time Pro-Bowler...yet, he is still known for his 'wrong-way-run.'
He’s Bud Grant’s favorite player. He looks at him like a son.
December 2022: Pats take the #2 spot.
I still can't not laugh at the buttfumble. Like when this dude retires that will be the biggest moment in his career. That has to suck.
Of All-Time? This list needs improvement.

yes it was. when u have me on the team u got no excuse to not give me the ball
Can we get an episode all about Leon Lett? I remember my dad told how pissed he was when Leon did that.
1:27 lol someone was excited for The Force Awakens

There is no way the Russel Wilson goal line interception is not on the list.
That goof by romo on the fg was epic. No one ever talks albout it though
Yepremian's what ever you want to call it in the Super Bowl has to be on this list.
The secret about Pagano's fake punt: They were trying to draw the Pats offsides. The center wasn't supposed to snap it.

A lot of recency bias here, there are a lot of plays from the football follies that are much worse than 90% of the plays here.
Hey, we got another one
Romo's fumble should be higher

why
he still almost got it in the end zone

Yeah Lynch doesn't have a good record when it comes to running on the goal line.
What are you blabbering about?
Kosta Thomas debatable, Lynch was definitely the best running back when it came to goal line performance, and he was an outstanding rusher, in the top 3 arguably. But the stats don't lie. So worst plays ever must mean after the year 2000 because there were plenty before 2000 other than 3! Whoever made up this list needs to do some research.
Yeah. I saw worse plays just last season than half the ones on this list
Did he really expect Gramatica to throw a block, let alone KNOW to throw a block? Lol
how the hell is the Interception from the last superbowl not on here?? dumbest play ever!!!
+shane clark It really isn't though, not at all a dumb play.
I sure as hell think it was. They run the ball they win the superbowl. A pass to the middle of the crowd that's expecting a run is stupid.
+shane clark exactly. You basically have a bulldozer for a running, yet you go for the pass? Dumb as hell
+Bostonzo B you're an idiot
Have you only watched one NFL game in your life?
I thought Leon Lett should have been No 1, but I forgot about Marshall running the ball back the wrong way.
All the others were just dumb luck, but Lett and Marshall?!?!
2:49 UH-HO
2:28 the way Jerry Jone's look on his face changes
The should of ran the ball.
I feel so bad for Jim Marshall. He had such a great career, but all that anybody remembers about him is that he ran the wrong way.
Yea poor guy
I died when he threw the ball 😂😂😂
Number 1 had me dieing lmao
For all you kids interested the guy who touches the blocked field goal for the Cowboys has a great blooper reel. Leon Lett, matched only by Desean
#1: Also, technically, the direction he threw the ball should have counted as a forward lateral since the play was still live, resulting in extra yardage on the kickoff.
the pats punting from their own 20 in the fourth quarter against manning's colts could get honorable mention
Just imagine if Romo was able to take that botched extra point into the end zone, might of been one of the best plays of all time.
Have. Not of. Have.
Ahhhh the miracle at the Meadowlands. The exact reason the victory formation was invented.
Number one is SO ME!!!! LOL
"wookie" xD lol
oh God, this hurts as a Jets fan.. can we just forget this ever happened?
Romo looks like he was running in slow motion 😂😂😂😂
The worst plays in the entire history of the NFL? Wow. Great research, guys.
OK I am only a new NFL fan and I get that the Sanchez play was bad, but is it worse than the Colts fake field goal? No way for me. Also the missed FG, they didn't even show the worst play?
I thought... damn that Patriots pass play deserves to be at the top of this list but no... no it doesn't... that #1 play is next level stupid
