- Gustav Forsling is one of the best defensemen in the NHL today. But he was waived TWICE and picked up by the Florida Panthers for free! It's one of the best stories in the NHL today imo, especially now that Forsling has signed a long term deal with the Panthers. I break down what makes Forsling so good in this video.

Where do you guys think Forsling ranks amongst the best waiver pickups of all time? I would argue he'd be near the top of that list with guys like Larionov, St. Louis, Bryzgalov, etc.
Also, do you think he deserves some love for the Norris trophy? 👀
Connor Ingram is pretty good waiver signing for Coyotes.
Nashville could have traded Saros and get at least 1st round and 2nd round picks in return, and continue with Lankinen and Ingram.
Cool video. I'm a Panthers fan. I definitely appreciate Forsling. By far our best defender. Im so glad Zito just extended him.
As a Panthers fan, I don't know where we'd be without Goose. The guy does it all.
I was hoping he would hit free agency after this year and maybe come to Tampa. He's been tearing it up in Florida for a couple years now. Zito did a good job locking him down.
I was hoping to get him back on my Canucks as well 🥲if only we hadn’t traded him for nothing when he was younger
No sir. You guys are the ones that shed the players, we take them 😂
Oh man I might have had to end it all if Forsling ever went to Tampa. It's already bad enough as a Cats fan seeing Duke there now.
I’m glad they locked him down, as a panthers fan to Tampa… You wish
F#CK YOU TAMPA! - with respectful love from a Panthers fan ❤
I’ve been pointing out for awhile now how underrated he is. If you focus on him each Panthers game you notice he rarely ever makes a mistake.
As a cats fan, I knew from the first game he played in 2021 he was good. Happy to see him extended 8 years and the league starting to take notice of his ability
I watched Forsling when he was with my favorite team Linköping and I realized that we would not be able to keep him. However, I did not guess that he would become this good! Just look at his +/- stats, it's incredible. All the best Gustav!
As a Panthers fan, Zito is a god based on this Wavier wire find. He’s grown significantly as a player, very great skater, shot, defensively. Good signing and locking him up.
There is seriously good coaching and scouting staff in Panthers. You can see it in players body language when everybody feels they have a meaningful role in the team.
I hope to see Rangers cs. Panthers at ECSF. Not just because Rempe vs Cousing are definitely going to fight, but those are the most playoff-ready teams in the East.
It really is. And it's clearly not a fluke with Forsling (see Verhaeghe, Reinhart, Bennett, Montour, etc.). The Panthers have something special going on and it's fun to watch.
I don't see how or why Cousins would willingly fight Rempe lmao, absolutely enormous size difference there. Cousins is a rat but not really a fighter (part of why people hate him).
@@dtmuffinman Just like there was with Domi and Propert. :)
Rempe executed dirty hit the other night, but i hope he punches Cousins' lights out. Cousins is the cancer of hockey, acts tough, but then declines a proper fight. Only a real lowlife tries intentionally to injure players.
But then again, NHL clearly wants dirty hits (by giving ridicilously lenient penalties) because not just hard and clean tackles, but dirty and dangerous tackles evokes emotional reaction from people, giving them dopamine hits which ultimately makes them paying customers.
Lmao panthers fan here and cousins will not fight him but gadjovich will ;)
Panthers season ticket holder here. It has been a privilege watching this defensive superstar every game. Also, Chucky has said that players need to keep their wives and girlfriends away from Gus when he takes off his shirt.
Forsling is unreal. To me he's like a more mobile Nick Hjalmerson .. just stuffs opposing offense with a fantastic stick, positioning, and good first pass.
Great video, us Panthers fans see it every day, it's crazy how mistake-free he plays every night, he's so incredibly consistent and reliable. The amount of times he's been able to save seemingly doomed plays is staggering, feels like almost at least once a game. One thing Paul Maurice has mentioned as a big point in his favor that doesn't get talked about much is that he's in incredible shape. Not only does that allow him to play the big minutes he does while always going at 100% every play, but he also tends to stay healthy, and if he gets hurt he bounces back quickly.
Started watching hockey literally before the 21-22 season and I watched the panthers with a buddy to get into hockey and he caught my eye right away just cause how smooth he skates and hes been my favorite player since
Long time Panthers fan here. Good video! Glad that our franchise is finally relevant over the last few years. Good video explaining how Forsling is an asset to our team. I subscribed as well
IN ZITO WE TRUST!! The culture is super strong in South Florida right now, and all the boys are bought in to the system. Everyone knows their role and plays it to the best of their abilities, and they all melt together into one very fluid, tactical game.
Forsling really is amazing. Love watching him play
I didnt know who Forsling was before watching them a lot the last few years. I just figured he was a young prospect and former high draft pick for the Panthers. Its insane how good that 2014 NHL draft was for the Panthers. Should they take Reinhart, Ekblad, or Bennet first overall? How about all of them.
Players don't work in every system, or mesh with every coaching staff. It's why you so often see allstar players switch teams, then have their production fall off a cliff (look at huberdeau). Forsling is in the right system, and with the right type of players that highlight the type of game he plays exceptionally well.
As a hawks fan, I never understood why they gave up on him ridiculous given how in lack of nhl caliber players we have had the past couple years.
Love videos like these. Ty ty
Thanks for the support! Hope you stick around!
I'm a panthers fan, and Forsling has been my favorite player on the team for the past 3 years, the dudes a complete beast.
Love the Goose here in FLA, great vid!
Thanks for the great informative video. Very handy for me, a relative newcomer to hear the facts along with clips & i'd imagine "seasoned" fans appreciated it too. In depth, fully explained but not over-nerdy!! Cheers from the UK, take care.
24-year Panthers fan here. Outstanding video. I learned from it. I appreciate your work and content.
Thank you so much! Hope to keep putting out content you'll enjoy
Really, this video is more just highlighting the fact that not all players fit on every team (no matter how much the stats would suggest). In the case of Forsling, he seems to have found the best place to be.
Yep you’re exactly right. The fit matters so much more than people think
1) whats' awesome is Ekblad is there too in that first stat. 2) I call him gustav SCORSLING, cos he also scores. 3) MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Great video, he certainly has flown under the radar for a lot of people. As a Bolts fan, I see him plenty and he seems to always do the right thing. Frustrating to play against, but truly can appreciate what he brings.
awsome coverage
Great video
Been going to panthers games for 20+ years and I love how the team is right now. I hope they make another deal run this year. I was sad to see duclair go but his team seems much better than previous years. I think if we got rid of ekblad and got a solid defensive player we’d be even better. We got rid of yandle and weegar so we’re definitely going in the right direction. This playoff series will be amazing
Gustav Forsling scored the game winner game 6 against the Bruins.
Love the panthers content, they’re a super interesting team
Liked the video wouldnt mind seeing a video on a guy who showed up on both league wide graphs and doesn't anywhere near the appreciation or respect he deserves Matt Roy or as i refer to him "the best player no ones ever heard of"
Feels like Carolina's entire blue line would be high on the list. Those guys are so good together
good job Thx i'm officially a metrics nerd now...
Lmao welcome to the club 🫡
And he wasn't even named a Norris Trophy Finalist. SMH. And he's also been Smyth frontrunner these Playoffs too
Gustav Forsling is minmaxing hard for that top parse DPS.
PANTHERS fan here been saying he's the best d player in the league
and Bill Zito signed him up for the long term.
A player is only as good as the team and coaching around them goose is good on the panthers because the players around him play to his strengths as well as he plays to there’s
Ex Blackhawk
Mafaka is +47 this season haha
Jeff Petry is the best
He was waived on Chicago because he was horrible then
He’s talented but he’s just a 4th forward when he’s out there. Not a defenseman
Clueless. He reminds me of Lidstrom in defence
this guy is either trolling or is clueless either way stfu
Have you watched him play? It may seem like he's the 4th forward because he is blazing fast but dude is the most responsible D-man on the team.
great video and yes, forsling is extremely underrated. it was a good too until we resigned him (didnt want to see him go). but now that his is secured he deserves all the recognition he can get. outstanding defenseman.
Besides his shutdown abilites with his stick. My favorite attribute of his is his ability to pinch on the offensive blue line, keep pucks in the zone and snap off quick shots and actually getting them on net. Seriously the most underrated player in the league
