lol, you used my question about cloning the axis, i felt like an idiot when i realized why it was done, built your machine a little over a year ago and have had a lot of fun with it. Thank you for putting these plans on here for free, anyone on the fence about building this machine if you have the room do it , you wont be disappointed.

Subbed for the CNC?! Nah! I subbed for the Pocket Hole Machine build! That build and the accompanying updates to the DIY Foreman really got me on board.

I see people assuming plywood is inferior to hard wood and don’t understand how it’s made and why it’s stable. So much resin in the sheets.
The machine for myself would be used for signs. The chance to route all sorts of fonts and accent borders on signs is so exciting to me. The whole accuracy question being repeated is more about their ability to construct the machine anyway. Just carve out a sign saying, lIt’s pretty accurate,” while folding your arms and staring into the camera.

I don't think I subscribed because of this build, I subscribed because your a down to earth friendly master craftsman and I really enjoy watching how you build and how the projects turn out. It's like I'd love to do it but don't have the talent so I'll watch a real craftsman and enjoy what's produced. Thank you for these great videos!!

Thank you for all of your effort. Watching your original prompted me to get my DIY CNC done. For controllers I went with an ethernet board rather than a parallel to USB. You can have a very long ethernet cable without any signal denegation. Ethernet cable is also super cheap and available. I picked up a used Win7 machine which is never connected to the internet. Nice and simple as well as cheap. Yes, I like cheap solutions that work. I did not have the room to dedicate to a CNC so mine is winched flat to the wall with an ATV winch.

I give you Baltzer-score of 10 out of 10. I really loved your Doug DeMuro reference was spot on.
I have build a 600 x 1200 mm CNC more than 5 years ago with DIN rails. I used scrap aluminum profiles for a frame, but 90% og the materials was scrap finds (old laminated table top, metal profiles from an old excise bench) As you CNC I have used it for smaller jobs now and then for 5 years. Maybe 100 hours like you. I am amazed how well it works for the price. I spend $150 total at the time at had an old hand router on the shelf. I run GRBL on an Arduino based controller and it will work with USB on any PC. I use small DRV8825 2,5A drivers with active cooling and they do it quite well for the low price.
I just LOVE the "it does not have to be a Ferrari to be a fun car" approach. The price can keep many from even trying and not all need 0,001 mm precision.

Thanks Brad for the follow-up on cnc build & changes you've incorporated into it to make it better. Would love to see more future videos where you use it to compliment your then project(s). I'm pretty sure I didn't subscribe to your channel because of the cnc video, as much as I did because of the sandals. Your plans were among some of the DIY plans for cnc when I was looking to build one. Unfortunately, my work schedule limits my shop time, thus I never really got around to getting one finished. I ended up purchasing one already built & while my Onefinity is awesome, it's limited on size. In the future, if I can put the fishing pole down long enough on my home time, I'm hoping to actually building your design but using a Buildbotics controller & linear rails.

Thank's Brad. You touched on something that I have never seen mentioned anywhere else... the parallel to USB converter. I have watched many videos on DIY machines, and needing a computer with a parallel port is a very common theme. I knew parallel to USB converters existed, and wondered why nobody used one... now I know! 😀

Im planning on building one that doesn't have as much span. Like only 50cm, I think it'll win on rigidity that way, and I don't need the surface anyways, just the length

Nice job, so few more questions ;) :
    1. Is the side "legs" stiff enough? Do they vibrate during machining?
    2. Is it possible to machine aluminium on it?
    3. Is Y beam stiff enough? Do you obtain same depth of cut in the middle as in the sides of it?
    Best regards from Poland :)

@@DIYBuilds Thanks for the reply but isn't MDF more dimensionally stable with temperature and humidity changes? I want to build a wood and aluminum extrusion CNC router with a 18" x 48" cutting area. I'd like it to have a repeatability and backlash of .002" for routing balsa, thin birch ply up to 3/8" and occasionally plastics and aluminum to 1" thickness. I need the accuracy mostly for the aluminum and plastics. If I build out of MDF I would also apply several coats of polyurethane. What do you think? MDF or should I stick with 3/4" birch ply considering my concerns? Thanks again.

Hi fantastic. I used to be a bandsaw box maker (art) Made reasonable money from this (upto 2007 before finacial crunch). I have seen that a cnc machine would take out much grind from this. I have been given interest free money from the government here in New Zealand to help with my taxi business. I can use the money to restart my wood working business.
I want to do boxes to start, then 3d sculpture and furniture art.
    My questions are:
    1. I was considering on getting the shapeko 4, all up would cost NZD 5000 (4.3k canadian). Cost of materials here in NZ are insane now :( Considering i aim to be more business not hobby, do you think i should go for the shapeko?
    2. If i was to use your wonderful plans on this and other stuff you have, Godamm inches is gibberish to me. Totally metric required. Would this be a problem?
Again, you are amazing and fantastic. Really inspirational. Thanks so much.

  • @skibum3027
    @skibum3027 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey, first of all, your table is amazing!!!
I'm building a scaled up version of your project (cuts full sheets), and I just got to the point where I'm ready to attach DIN rails to a torsion box. I'm wondering, should I be painting this? Do you regret not sealing yours in any way? Cost aside, is there any reason NOT to paint or at least polyurethane? I feel like as soon as I put the DIN rails on and start building the gantry, I'll have to take it back apart to exactly this point if I decide I want to paint it later, so I thought I'd ask. Sorry if you've answered this at some point in the CNC playlist! I promise I've searched if you did :)
About Mach3 and Windows... You can absolutely run Mach3 on Windows 10 (technically the issue is with ALL 64 bit operating systems, not any one version of Windows) through an external motion controller. But, unless you already have a pile of Mach3 pieces laying around, this is not very practical:
    (1) Mach4 runs on windows 10 without needing an EMC, and the cost of adapting mach3 usually exceeds the price difference. Note: Because of an issue with Windows Update, you'll have much better luck with Windows 10 PRO than HOME (start by disabling automatic system updates if struggling with Mach3 or Mach4 and Windows, AFIAK this is only available in 10 PRO)
    (2) GRBL will run on an EMC (an Arduino board) without the Mach3 setup. Arduino boards are currently cheaper than a decent Mach3 compatible EMC, and obviously don't have the added expense of the Mach3 purchase.
I know you were using a system you had laying around, but I suspect for the majority of people attempting a similar build without any pieces set aside in 2021, a remote desktop client coupled with an arduino board would provide the cheapest solution. Rather than needing to purchase a dedicated system AND I/O devices, just get an RPi and install the arduino IDE and xrdp. (Obviously you should NEVER install a remote client onto an XP based system!!!)
If you do find yourself trying to adapt Mach3, PoKeys57CNC can 100% for sure get the job done. I haven't personally tried any of the others. Beware: The support for any of the EMC's will be overly simplistic and entirely in Mandarin. This is the way.
Hopefully that saves someone some research!!!
