My husband & I grew up in Chicago, married for 35yrs (old school)..Chicago has changed dramatically since we moved to the beautiful suburbs. We both did the beaches & Chicago Cubs & many restaurants. We live 35 miles out of downtown now, strange thing is: All the kids in our small town, moved to Chicago! Something to be said...Chicago is Awesome!
Mind your Society Great Video of Chicago, I was born 20 minutes away in Gary, Indiana but also came up on the Southside of Chicago so ur Take on the City was Great & ur Beautiful !
Dierre Sanders thank you. I actually took a trip to Gary when I was living in chicago. I’m a big Jackson 5 fan so that’s what pulled me there. I loved seeing the home the Jackson’s grew up in. And it was a small yet cozy, welcoming city. I went to a diner there and everyone felt like family
Thank you for this video! I've fallen in love with this city since last summer and have already been back twice (probaby one or two more times this year even). I'm really looking into moving to this city after I finish with nursing school here in Florida. I came for the winter too, so I'm kind of aware of how cold it can get (your Spring weather is apparently my brutal winters here haha). And I really love the public transportation system they have here. It's reliable and something we don't have down south. I love this city so much. Hopefully I can move here!
Thank you so much for this video! You're awesome. You answered all of my questions, Chicago seems like a really awesome place :)

Very well explained I was born and raised in Chicago left for school to move to Mo. and everything you said is right on key. When I resided there on the North Side rent wasn't as high but very affordable bit your right my friends in Evanston have told me prices have soared. But still overall it's a great city.
Very sweet of you for making this video. I might be moving to Chicago next year. I really love the 4 seasons thing, I was born in a very small city in Spain called Palencia and I had that till I was 16. I hope the excitement of a radical life turn be enough to up the stakes for a living and make it. Thanks!
Thanks Gabb, your videos are so intersting for people come there from abroad; I have in my mind to go there next year and so I'm watching all videos about windy city on you tube. Your videos are so useful; very good, bye (ciao) from Italy.
Hi gabby I live in my own apartment in Florida, for a long time I wanted to live in Manhattan new York but its quite expensive, but I have also wanted to visit Chicago and see what the lifestyle is like there. If I really liked the city after I have visited a couple time I might move there.
Awesome video! I go to Chicago for spring break every single year and we rent out a house in Forest Park. I am 17, and I plan on moving to Chicago and go to College, I will take the roommate advice because of the cost of living haha
Thanks for the video. A few years ago I moved across the country from Denver to Ohio and now I'm moving from Denver to Chicago and this video is super helpful and covers everything
THANKS!!!!! So much for making this video. I have family in Dixmoor, il my auntie have been trying to get my to come up there to live. I look up to u for making that move I know it was scary being a young black woman moving somewhere u know nothing about. I wish u the best of luck 😊
Thank you for very good video with a lot of information about Chicago...So far only you gave so much info...about the City.. Thank you again...Planning to move to Chicago because the weather and jobs availabilities.
I live in Denver now. The rent is getting insane for a small big city like Denver. I lived in Chicago during the summer several years ago. I've been doing some research on Chicago and the city is intriguing me. I might move back and try again. My only hesitation is the legendarily brutal winter.
Like +King C I, too, am amazed at how accurate you are with your interpretation of the Chicago experience. I was born and raised here and have traveled abroad for many years now and I still think it's the GREATEST city in the world! Your apartment hunting and neighborhood assessments (I'm a Hyde Parker myself) were definitely on point! Another stand out neighborhood is OLD TOWN, though small, it offers so much to do within it's 'whatever' mile radius! Oh...and thank you for touching on the segregation and violence issues! Most people don't talk about these issues. The segregation is a product of education and pricing! Discriminatory to say the least but, all in all, Good stuff!
Excellent video segment. The information that you provided was very helpful and I’m sure many others will benefit from it. and thank you for being so pronounced in all your details.
Thanks for posting this video. Im from Minneapolis, MN and Im graduating from college in 2014. Its a huge goal of mine to move to Chicago. I recently visited the city in 2013 and just loved it but Ive been researching Chicago for a long time. Im looking for jobs in marketing or insurance. I was nervous about crime but your made me feel better and I felt safe during my trip. The only thing about the weather that I hate is the wind. It nearly blew me off my feet when I was there. I have been to NYC and I would rather live in Chicago because it felt like a more reasonably priced and less intimidating city than NYC. I cross checked the COL in a COL calculator and Chicago wasn't that much than Minneapolis. What also attracts me to Chicago is that its in the Midwest. I felt like I was in Minneapolis when I was walking around. marketing or insurance. about
ericj305. I have not. I'm still trying but the big obstacle I'm having is that I can't find a job. I apply for a job that I feel I'm qualified for and it will even say in the job description something like only a bachelor's degree is required and when I apply I get a rejection email. I have had phone interviews with companies but nothing beyond that and again I'm applying. for jobs that state in description a a college degree is required but I get rejected so im beginning to think there's something wired going on with its job market but I'm still trying to move there.
Love your attitude about living in chicago. The best thing you can do before moving to Chicago is to be we all informed and have a education in something in the tech sector, ie computer programming, and/or networking. It's a great and dynamic city !
I have lived in Chicago for 37 years. The Winters here are BRUTAL COLD. Yes the City is cleaner than NY. People are friendlier, and we have the best PIZZA & HOTDOGS in the World!. If you live in bad neighborhood you going to experience crime sooner or later. Yes Indiana is only a 40 minute drive south.Yes the racial divide is obvious. The Club Scene is decent but it depends more so on the people who are there. Chicago has a Serious Omage too Soulful Blues music and Old School House Music. If it doesn't got Soul in it it's not worth your ear time. A 1100.00 a month 2 bed room on north side is 800.00 on the south side. You have to picky our spots carefully. Free Parking is a pain to find!!! But you will find in some of best friends here to grow up with !
Wait a minute.... is Indiana being a 40 minute drive to the south listed as a good thing or a bad thing? ;) Just teasing since you listed it next to the crime thing and i'm from there.... I knew what you meant! :)
Yes Northwest Indiana is on a 40 min drive south from Chicago Loop and overall a good, friendly, cozy and quiet place to live. The good spots are South Hammond (passed 159th street) Munster, Sherrilleville, Merriville, the Bad spots Area's are North Hammond, Gary, and East Chicago. It can be a good thing if you work in Chicago and Live in Northwest Indiana. You take a 40 min South Shore Metra train into the Chicago Loop known as the south shore train. The advantage for Chicago's workers to live in Indiana is more HOUSE for your $. You can save up to 45 % on the cost of your home. Everything cost less and taxes are also less. Much less crime and peace and quiet. (good to raise a family) The advantage to Chicago is the convenience factor with all the trains. But you will Pay 45%-60% more for a house in Chicago and deal with much crime.
Thank you for the video, GiftofGab! I'm considering moving to Chicago for school. I'm 21, and I hesitate to go because of the cost of living, difficulty finding a job and place to live. Not to mention, the cost of school itself. I'm really having trouble deciding if the school experience is worth it. I might do alright if I play my cards right, as I do have family living in Chicago that may support me.
I have been in Chicago all my life , for those who are looking for an apartment , you are better off studio all utilities are included in the rent l pay $690:00 right in Logan square Hi neighbor
I live in California and love Chicago. What might a 1 bedroom apartment run in the River North area? Are there many jobs for mental health professionals? Thanks, Gabbz!
Hey, I'm improving my english, and I understood almost everything you said, and my dream is going to Chicago, at least once. I liked the video so much, thank you ! (I like the way you speak haha)
Very true about how friendly everyone is there! My cousin used to play for the bears so I got to experience Chicago through him. I thought the nightlife was great!! Do you mind me asking what you do for work? Did you find a job before you moved there?
Just wanted to say there are two great Universities on the South side, University of Chicago, and Illinois Institute of Technology, Hyde Park and Bronzeville respectively.
I'm from So Cal but moving to Chicago (Lincoln Park area) mid March. How's the winter around that time of year? Was wondering if I should buy myself a so so decent jacket just to make it to Summer or just wait it all out and wait for the Winter. Many thanks in advance!
Hey, Gabbz...I'm a native of Chicago, born and raised, and I thought you did a pretty good job describing the city for someone that hadn't lived here that long. Good vid. Welcome! ;)
I was born and raised in Chicago, and had lived there until I moved to Los Angeles in 2006. Back when you published this video you mentioned that you had only lived in Chicago for a little over a year. I think for the short period of time you lived there you gave a perfect description of the City of Chicago; from how clean it is to how racially divided the city really is.....Nice work overall!
Went to LA one time.... few places to visit but overall.... didn't like it much. Very dirty in some places and wow....the homeless population there is everywhere.
Thanx for this vid. I'm hoping to move at the end of this year. Lining up job interviews and apartments but I wanted to know what it's TRULY like to b there as an AA young woman.
I just moved a month ago! I found a place in the Gold Coast. I love that area! Coming from Dallas the prices for a place in Chicago was 2-3x. Then again my area may have added to that. I highly recommend the GC.
Generally, winters in Chicago range between 20-40° though there is usually a week or two below zero.
5 ปีที่แล้ว
Daya Mdz You're in for a shock then! (Also, in addition to days of zero or below zero degrees, Chicago always gets a CRAPLOAD of snow. Just a heads up).
Thegiftofgab you forgot to mention we have the best skyline in America I've been all over the country and never seen a lakefront so beautiful...And to be honest with you Chicago had some really nice dance spots but times are changing but you still can find some decent venues I've thought about relocating but i have a beautiful home in the south suburbs don't forget about these areas....
Chicago is in the midwest as is Detroit where I'm from. Maybe in the middle of corn fields in little towns you'll get mid west "hospitality" but not so much in Chicago which is the third largest city in the u.s.
sophisticado100 I have always heard others as well say nothing but great things about Chicago and the people there when they went. Other places yes I heard bad things but not about Chicago
I’m in college and have met many ppl from Chicago and outside of Chicago and I must say they are some of the most social, friendly ppl I’ve ever met! For that reason I’m looking to relocate to the region after I graduate
When I'm older and I get a chance to move out, I'm looking for a place to move in Chicago. I was thinking of moving somewhere near the Metro Theatre there, or near music stores. Chicago seems like a really confusing, big town, and I'm from a little town south of Springfield, so it'll be a huge change for me. Does anyone have any tips for navigating in big cities? I'm already horrible with directions.
Thank you for your video it is very interesting ! I'm not looking for moving to Chigago but I'll be there for 6 months (from March to September). I actually live in Switzerland but I come for a language course at the Kaplan school. It was so hard for me to choose the City where I wanted to stay because I've always been dreaming about the USA but and I don't really know which places would suit me the best. I've already been in New York, Miami and Atlanta and I've to say that NYC was the best one. I really like this city because there is a lot of things to see, to do, to visit... But there were to many people and it is such a dirty city. Anyway I chose Chicago because I wanted to know another place, a place that not so many people will go. In Switzerland everybody goes to NYC, Miami, L.A or San Francisco, so I just wanted to take a "risk" and do something different ! But now I'm starting to feel anxious because I don't know if I'll have fun jn Chicago, do shopping, visiting and all these things that a 21 years old person will do lol. Well, your video already makes me feel more confident about my trip and helped me a lot but I still don't know if won't be bored during 6 months.. For the very fist time of my life I'll be gone that long, I'm so scared lol. Just hope that you can give more advices about it. Sorry for this long comment and for my bad english... PS: I love your hair, you're beautiful :)
2 bdrm for 1100 is really good coming from Houston where a 1bd room for a nice/ new apt can go up to 1500 so, that's definitely good news bc im considering moving to Chicago this winter!!!
I'm from Atlanta and I would love to relocate. I am already making plans to visit Chicago soon. It's funny because the crime issue never really concerned me that much haha. If there is one thing that I have learned by living in/visiting various places, it is to use common sense. Thank you for this video.
The car thing! Yessss!!!!!! That is something that is pulling me towards Chicago. I've heard so many good things about the public transportation there. Driving every damn where is overrated.
What about having a car? I used to live in NYC and I literally couldn't have a car, for me it was financially impossible. But I moved to Texas and I'm trying to move back to a city environment. Is parking ridiculous, expensive etc.
your comments very true as I lived there for 6 years, like Marina Towers and Lakeshore drive, my last freezing winter was the blizzard of 78, had enough. California is nice but depends where you want to be, I live in Orange County my husband and I, Capistrano like it, but like Newport beach ugh!! stuck up etc, workd there for27 years, but coming to Chicago next week for a week and looking forward to it, people are nicer really
I am so thankfull Gabby, I am Green Card winner and perhaps I will be in Chicago in April next year, u know there is a lot of challanges I will encounter, the langage I am bad in prounciation , the culture, find a job , renting a house, assimilate the law and many staffs, so ur clarification is pretty usefull. once again thanks a lot.
As for clubs ever been to The Mid? Smart Bar, Primary, Sound-Bar, Spy bar are a few other good ones. There are tons of bars with dancing that I wouldn't consider "Clubs". If you're ever in the south loop hit me up.
Hi Gabby! Wonderful, informative video! Is there an apartment building or area near Union Square you can recommend? My husband and I are in our early thirties, no kids, hoping to move to a vibrant, safe area. We need to be close to Union Square to catch a commuter train on the weekdays. Thank you!
Thanks for the video! I'm moving to Rogers Park at the end of the month. What's your overall impression of that area? Also do you primarily use public transportation? I'm debating bringing both mine and my boyfriends car or just one.
Trying to get back to Chicago for three years now!! Lol just moved back home from las vegas and the whole time I was there I was missing my true home CHICAGO. love that city and all of its corks! And btw the south side isn't all that bad it has gotten a whole lot better!! Lbvs you should check out pilsen or hell CHINA TOWN that's on the south side! Gotta get out more girly! :)
I see Chicago has not changed much since I left there over a decade ago. Very good and accurate description of Chicago. I left because I could not take the cold and the pronounced segregation. Its probably starting to get much cooler now. Stay warm and may all your dreams come true there!
You left because of the pronounced segregation???? 😂 come lady, who are you kidding? You live where you want to live, no one puts a gun to your head and force you to live somewhere and someone has the advantage of living where they want because they worked hard to do it and they reap the benefits of bettering yourself..... don't give us the crap that Chicago is "segregated" because the "white man" forced the blacks to the south side, if that's what you're implying subtly by your comment.
@@IAMBENNYBLANCO. Yes, I coukd not stand Chicago because of its pronounced racism and I left because of it. I live where I am way more comfortable now. I can speak my opinion of my feelings and my experience....5 years ago and today. I can't stand Chicago. Hated it.
I know this is a super old video but very very helpful. My daughter just graduated and has a job offer for chicago. She went to school in DC so she is used to the city life but she prefers southern cities. The job pays well but as you said rent is expensive. Are the suburbs more affordable and is there public transportation from the suburbs?
I was born and raised in Chicago. The racial divide is less now than it was then because the only neighborhoods where Blacks and Whites interacted was Hyde Park and the village of Oak Park. I as a white would not dare go into a black neighborhood and blacks would not come into white neighborhoods. There were even tensions among white ethnic groups, too. It is not paradise now but is so much better than the 1960s and 1970s.
Robert Blakemore yeah bruh it’s called reverse gentrification a lot of white people moving in da city while Hispanics and black people are moving to da suburbs of Chicago da city is becoming really expensive i used to live in Chicago but moved to bolingbrook
2 beds for $1,100 is cool. I'm in the south loop and I'm paying $1,725 for a 2 bedroom. I can agree with what you said. I would probably stress more the expense of owning a car here. Parking is crazy. Plus I would also mention the smoking. I feel like I cant walk 3 blocks in the city without getting smoke blown in my face.
I'm PROUDLY borned & raised in the GREAT city of Chicago & I visit every year, Chicago looks tens times better than what it looked 30 years back... overall. It has certainly progressed over the years and they knocked down the infamous Cabrini Green projects and now it looks no where than what it looked like....lol....I freaked out when I was realized it. Overall , Chicago is a great city other than some of the craziness going on the South side.
Great video and very informative considering the date posted! I have visit a few times and understand the area well. What do you recommend is average salary to live in river north area! Really indecisive about moving to Chicago but feel my aspirations can be met there (finance). I’m from Texas so it’s a bit different of course considering we don’t have state tax either.
I visited Chicago a few weeks ago and I was amazed how clean the city was and everyone was very nice. I must say everyone was dressed nice and professional. Even the panhandlers say please lol
Great vid thx u! I'll be moving to Chicago near the end of summer with a job already set, but my question was about the pilsen neighborhood for younger professionals? Also, would you recommend comuting from the burbs such as Oak Park?
Thanks for making this video, I live in Indiana which i feel is kind of similar to Ohio so i feel like this was very helpful in my plans of moving to Chicago. One thing though, you say things are more expensive there i have visited before but mostly just downtown. Is it the local shops that are more expensive or even the chain ones because i don't remember paying a lot for McDonalds or Domino's while i was there early last year? Thanks :)
I'm headed to Chi-town this evening and, don't laugh, but i kind'a wanna ride the L train and just see the whole city, or what's view-able of course, minus my getting lost, lol. When they say the "loop" i guess i'm thinking it circles the city and/or the downtown area, huh? The crazy part is that I actually lived in Chicago, the lakeshore drive apartments, 15th floor back in the mid 70's, lol. Thank you very much, i soo appreciated your response. ... Steven
Great video! I am relocating to a D.R. Horton home in North Aurora IL and working downtown, is the traffic as bad as I have heard? I am looking forward to the change and hesitant at the same time; I have always felt it is such a beautiful city!
Chicago is my hometown! I visited in September and was so enamored by the parks and buildings. Way more beautiful than L.A. Btw, I would love to go house music dancing with Gabby.
Hi am from the UK and am going chicago for a holiday. It would be apreciated if you could tell me about the general living cost in chicago. How much would it cost to eat at a restaurant in chicago. Also are there any good tourist atraction places in chicago?
Awesome video. Great information. I live Downtown and I feel very safe. Im close enough to my Job where I can walk everyday in a short amount of time and I love it.
is it just me who finds her background a little... trippy?
Kelly Liu Yes, wtf. xD
it's the camera on her phone...
Kelly Liu the background is moving. It may be the focus of the camera.
Warp stabilizer
The background is fuckin annoying and stupid

Right?! Dirt freakin cheap, coming from Oregon
I thought i was trippin when I seen the background moving

Great video, I've been here almost 4 years and I love it here.
Just moved here in October 15 and every single thing you have said is 100% absolutely true. Thanks for the video
Fantastic. Chicago is definitely at the top of my list for grad school!
I have been in Chicago all my life , for those who are looking for an apartment , you are better off studio all utilities are included in the rent l pay $690:00 right in Logan square Hi neighbor
can you make an update video of how It was in Chicago, if you still there. or simply were there and how it was.
I live in California and love Chicago. What might a 1 bedroom apartment run in the River North area? Are there many jobs for mental health professionals? Thanks, Gabbz!
I'm from Ohio too! I just moved to Chicago in Aug, still getting adjusted. Great video!
Any updates, tips for Chicago? I'm from Ohio and thinking about moving as well.
Great down to earth advice.
I think for the short period of time you lived there you gave a perfect description of the City of Chicago; from how clean it is to how racially divided the city really is.....Nice work overall!
every city has ethnic neighborhoods... that's not just a product of white people.
@@HazeGreyAndUnderway but its not like Chicago...
I highly recommend the GC.
thanks for the video! I am trying to move to Chicago pretty soon, as well :)
rubicscube007 Ur name does not make you look like ur an adult...... no offence.
The Chicago weather worries me. I'm from the Southern Texas/Next to Mexico and our Winters are always around 57° coldest.
Generally, winters in Chicago range between 20-40° though there is usually a week or two below zero.
UChicago, St. Xavier, and IIT are in the south side of Chicago.
One of the most real person in TH-cam, Thanks for the information ♥️
I don't know why people think Chicago isn't rude. I encountered many rude people there.
sophisticado100 Actually Chicago is the friendliest city on earth
You haven't traveled nearly enough then LOL
sophisticado100
I have travelled a lot and BTW it is not just me who knows how friendly Chicago is. I hear it all the time from tourists
Chicago is in the midwest as is Detroit where I'm from. Maybe in the middle of corn fields in little towns you'll get mid west "hospitality" but not so much in Chicago which is the third largest city in the u.s.
sophisticado100
I have always heard others as well say nothing but great things about Chicago and the people there when they went. Other places yes I heard bad things but not about Chicago
I’m in college and have met many ppl from Chicago and outside of Chicago and I must say they are some of the most social, friendly ppl I’ve ever met! For that reason I’m looking to relocate to the region after I graduate
Do you think staffing agencies are a safe route to take?
When I'm older and I get a chance to move out, I'm looking for a place to move in Chicago. I was thinking of moving somewhere near the Metro Theatre there, or near music stores. Chicago seems like a really confusing, big town, and I'm from a little town south of Springfield, so it'll be a huge change for me.
Does anyone have any tips for navigating in big cities? I'm already horrible with directions.
Grew up in SC but have been living in DC for 7 years.Chicago Houston or LA are the cities I’m looking forward to moving to.
Thank you for your video it is very interesting ! I'm not looking for moving to Chigago but I'll be there for 6 months (from March to September). I actually live in Switzerland but I
come for a language course at the Kaplan school.
Hey, any updates on the city, are you still there? Any life updates?
Thank you so much for this video! I'm moving to Chicago in 9 days. :) So excited!
2 bdrm for 1100 is really good coming from Houston where a 1bd room for a nice/ new apt can go up to 1500 so, that's definitely good news bc im considering moving to Chicago this winter!!!
Jean-Paul Charlot I’m sure prices are even higher now though! So do some updated research. You should have a good move though!
Super informative video on almost everything i was looking for. You are so beautiful too. Great style.
2BR for $1,100 isn't bad. It is about the same price for a nice apartment inside of Houston's loop.
root that’s s lie
Thank you!
I could be moving to chi for a job. So glad I came across your video. Thanks!
Very helpful video, planning to spend one semester abroad and my favorite is still chicago so thanks for that! ;-)
Thank you so much for sharing this info. I'm thinking of relocating there from new York so this is so helpful to my decision.
thank you for your insight, preparing to do a play that is set in Chicago , so your video give me a feeling to what the city is like. peace
Wonderful video! Not often it's easy to find a good explanation of the way of living in different cities. Thanks!)
I've lived in the Chicago area for almost 5 years and that racial divide is so real.
@@eternalr7830 Hispanics also are pushing Blacks out. They need to be deported!
@@thebabbler8867 seriously? Tell me that was just a bad joke
J.R. Productions Hispanics are white -
$1100 is a lot for two bedrooms. Hate how rent is overpriced in the Northside. I live near Midway and I pay $950 for a 3 bedroom apartment.
Yes, the black/white split is definitely noticeable and it's been that way for a while.
That's quite good for 2 bedrooms. Try to find that in a city like London.
I visited Chicago a few weeks ago and I was amazed how clean the city was and everyone was very nice. I must say everyone was dressed nice and professional. Even the panhandlers say please lol
do you ride the L train often, can you take it around the city without getting lost and/or stuck in bad spots and what's the price range?
Thank you very much, i soo appreciated your response. ... Steven
Girl I live in Santa Cruz, Ca which is a beach town and for a two bedroom apartment the cheapest you’ll find is $1400 a month
Great video! I am relocating to a D.R. Horton home in North Aurora IL and working downtown, is the traffic as bad as I have heard? I am looking forward to the change and hesitant at the same time; I have always felt it is such a beautiful city!
Will I freeze in the winter, if yes, please I will have to pass.
Chicago is my hometown! I visited in September and was so enamored by the parks and buildings. Way more beautiful than L.A. Btw, I would love to go house music dancing with Gabby.
University of Chicago and Chicago State Univ. is on the south side.
starmsjc IIT also by Sox stadium!
You also have Saint Xavier
Hi am from the UK and am going chicago for a holiday. It would be apreciated if you could tell me about the general living cost in chicago. How much would it cost to eat at a restaurant in chicago. Also are there any good tourist atraction places in chicago?
Awesome video. Great information. I live Downtown and I feel very safe. Im close enough to my Job where I can walk everyday in a short amount of time and I love it.
You are very well spoken. That's pretty refreshing.
Thank you Gab. Great video.
She is absolutely stunning.
