26:00 When my dad had a seizure a few years ago the few things I remember is my mom’s screams, my dad on the floor, and the noises he made. I could never accurately describe the noises I heard until I saw this scene. It’s horrifying how close it was to what I heard from my dad. It really shows how accurate Ari Aster can portray brain trauma and it’s effects on speech. It adds to the horror in my opinion since instead of an inaccurate interpretation it is something that could actually happen. It also makes those who were unfortunate enough to hear those sounds irl to feel even more uncomfortable. Ari Aster is truly a genius with horror.

    • @NiceDudeMovieNight

When my ex husband had his first seizure it sounded like a car accident or like a bear burping. Terrifying.

So it's essentially a "break-up" movie. She didn't feel appreciated and she was lost, but in the end she's able to share her grief with all the cultists. She's finally "free" and experiences joy, but it's due to all the wrong reasons. She's drugged up and not herself, and that's the tragedy of it. Ari Aster juxtaposes that beautifully. From the script "She has surrendered herself to a joy known only by the insane. She is finally free. It is horrible and it is beautiful" This movie was a bit hard to grasp at first, but once you do you realize just how fucking amazing it is. Ari Aster is the king of horror.

The Old Man from the cliff - you know who - was once known as 'The Most Beautiful Youth in The World', following his role as the Victorian-era youth that a besotted, dying Dirk Bogarde keeps seeing in a funereal, wintery Venice in 'Death In Venice'.
After that deeply strange but memorable film came out, that now old man says his youth was ruined, as he was taken as a kid to all kinds of decadent adult nightclubs, where sex and drugs were rampant, totally inappropriate for someone of his character.
He has said he found his brief role in This film to be quite therapeutic, as it destroys any connection to the enigmatic beauty he once had, and the misery it subsequently brought him.

The thing that makes me love this movie is seeing people say that it's "a happy ending for Dani" or it's "a girl boss movie", not realizing that they've fallen for the cult like Dani has.

And yes, the further up north the more nighttime sun we get in the summer. Midsummer's eve is supposed to be the longest day of the year, and i live in the Mid North and around 1-2 AM the sun is already rising again. It doesn't really get dark, but the sun just dips down behind the horizon for an hour or two. It's so nice to bike or walk home on Midsummer with your friends and you get hit with morning sun before even going to bed.

Ari does such a great job depicting the cult in a way where you as the audience might be in part swayed by the cult through the eyes of Dani. Also, as a Swede this movie is so unexpectadly hilarious at times as a lot of the practices, symbolism and traditions are _in part_ based on real Swedish lore and culture. Catching all of those but presented in such an extreme way is really funny at times. Saw the movie in the theaters when it came out and it was definitely a memorable experience!

Wizard of Oz is actually a theme in the movie.
Like you mentioned the yellow flowers are the Yellow Brick Road leading them into a new colourful land, previously the colours were muted before they got to Sweden.
Naturally Dani is Dorothy, her friends are killed because of the Oz character 'flaws'.
Mark is the Scarecrow or the 'fool' as he is called in the film because he is thoughtless (no brain) and doesn't think how his actions effect the village, only thinks with his 'little brain' and never catches on to what is happening. He is also literally stuffed with straw at the end.
Josh is the TinMan because while smart he doesn't care (no heart) about the cultural sensitivities of the Harga so gets killed for taking photos of the book. He studies them with no compassion.
Christian is the Cowardly Lion because he never stands up for himself (coward), he won't make the hard call to break up with Dani and doesn't say no when the Harga pressure him with drugs.
He is literally in the skin of a beast at the end, Lions and Tigers and BEARS, oh my!
The Harga and particularly the elders are the Wizard as they show one thing (gaslighting) to Dani while it's really a manipulation behind the scenes.

35:41 Nothing against you guys, but the fact that almost every reactor I've seen so far fails to recognize that this scene is not only about empathy but also about censorship is striking. They essentially mute her, erasing her individuality, which makes it even more poignant. So the “wings of skin” is called a blood eagle. A very rare, very sacred ritual that was done while the victim was alive.
Traditionally the victim would be tied down, and one by one the ribs were severed from the spine, until at the end they would pull the lungs out of the body and unfurl them like wings.
Most modern depictions show it as a skin flaying.

I STILL Don’t get the Hate for this Movie!!! This Movie was PHENOMENAL!! The Acting, the Foreshadowing, the Daytime Horror! Ari Aster is a Genius!!! 😁😁🥶🥶

I don't know wtf Ari said to Florence and Toni but they have had some of the worst (disturbingly real) wailing in movies I've seen.
As a child my neighbour found her mother hanging in the kitchen and she was brought to my house across the street. I remember her daughter's crying very vividly and Midsommar just hit it so close to home.

I think Josh missed a lot because he was watching the film kinda passively, worrying about chatting for the reaction and such. Maybe this kind of film is not the best for a reaction, because you can't really take it in with bright lights in your face, and chatting throughout the film. I think if he sat in a dark room and just watched the film, he would get so much more.

24:29 its because they´ve been drugged the whole time. look at josh´s face. their minds are obscured. plus in a lot of scenes, the environment moves and morphs around, to show the audience the condition they´re on and also to make yourself question, did i catch that right, what did i just saw there, the gras is moving?

I belive the main idea of Midsommar is setting a mirror to the west and showing a society that's exact opposite in many ways and yet functional and even preferable to Dani:
    - selfishness in west vs. community, where everyone cares deeply about others
    - individalistic society vs. world where people do everything together, including mourning, sex and death.
    - prologing life to the maximum vs. death at certain date
    - extreme freedom, nothing sacred and little traditions vs. designed life, rules, deep traditions and sacred things
    - everything black and dark vs everyting bright in the commune.
    - also shown in clothes - darkly colored americans vs white swedes (black is usually symbolically chaos, white order)
    - psychedelics and other drugs are direct part of culture
    etc.
Loved this movie, because its just not about a weird cult and getting killed one by one. Had to watch it again 2 days after my first time this midsommar :D

The first time I saw the movie, I thought the boyfriend was over the top shitty and I thought it would be more realistic if he toned it down. It bummed me out how many of my female friends have told me they think it is super accurate.

First time I saw this movie I hated it because as soon as they got to the village I knew it was going to turn into the Wicker man. But, I gave it another go and now I have a better understanding and appreciation of it. Still prefer Hereditary though.

Thank you! At least you two seem to realize Christian was a victim here. He was a bad boyfriend and a not-so-great person, but he was also drugged, raped (yes, its rape, he was not in the right sense of mind) and then burned alive. Yet everyone says its justified cause he was a terrible boyfriend.

This movie is strange to me. It has Swedish actors, but they talk like they was on a stageplay, they have buildings that is inspierd by buildings that is in the part of Sweden the say they are in, but they look wrong. And it feels like a big mist oportunety to have them go to Horga and not ones mention the legend about then the devil come and played on his fiddel so the youth danced to ther death. that is a old swedish story about Horga. They even have the "Horgalåten" that is a song about it.
Edit.. aparently i havent seen this movie in some time.. And i live in sweden.
