It appears very strong hurricane winds uprooted electric poles which started the fires. I am originally from Bangalore, India. We don't have hurricanes there but we experience very strong winds during the monsoon which uproot trees and electric poles. During such events, as a precaution, the electricity department deliberately shuts off all power transmission in the city until the storm passes. I am not an expert on this but this is something we need to look into doing here in the US.

We spent an entire month there in 2021 when things started to open up again. We've always had love and respect for the Island and have always been treated very well there. Naw OP, that side of the island is a natural desert. Irrigation is used to make it green over there; same with Kihei. That said, I'm in Kihei right now. My best friend's cousin saw what caused this. High winds caused power lines to tip over, then the hot downed lines set his neighbors' grass on fire. The fire department had it contained, then wind picked up, and it was off to races. Lahaina is prone fires.

The fires in Maui were caused by a combination of strong winds, dry vegetation and low humidity. The winds were generated by Hurricane Dora, a storm that was moving across the Pacific Ocean south of the Hawaiian Islands. The fires burned across Hawaii and prompted evacuations and an emergency proclamation.

@@ilikepokeyotutu3467 so why did this happen then? Was it just normal and natural that this fire happened? We made it a point to go to Lahaina to visit the Cheeseburger in Paradise and to the outdoor shops. It was an amazing place! All of the old architecture, the people so friendly and happy to help lost tourists. We also spent time in Hana at the Hana Hotel. The drive was just breathtaking! I’m so glad I shot video of every place we went. It will stand as a bit of what was……so very sad. God bless all of the people of Maui and the tourists that were caught up in the disaster.
