When he said that I was like “I’m not the only one?” 😂 Idk, it’s so rewarding to build a deck to accomplish a goal and then when you test/play with said deck and it just accomplished the goal you had in mind, it’s such an excitement high
@@k45hc1ll4 I don't know, if it's an excitement high or just fun and entertaining. I think, usually I just expect it to work by default and when it does not, then I'm a bit disappointed.
I am the same way, like an on and off switch after a ban list hurts my deck or meta decks I always rethink what I did and if it was successful. Currently I am stuck in a loop of updating all of my decks but not getting enough time to play and practice with them in actual duels. My friends hate that I am never ready to play when I am in Big Brain mode lol
@@Jghost11 I suggest never to play (updating) never more than 3 decks at a time. Just have your favorite deck that is currently and you like, then maybe an alternative and maybe, if it has to be, a fun deck that you like. Update them after each ban list or new set release and play them - or just one of them is actually enough. There are not so many ban lists and sets comming out all the time that could affect your decks. That should give you way more than enough time to actually play your decks. I mean I also have decks, that I put aside for a while: For example, Linkuriboh gets banned because of snake eyes. That means my Altergeist deck may rest for a wole lotta while. I played Raidraptors ad nausium. That means I put Raidraptors aside for a while. I tried Masquerade turbo big pile a couple of times and wasn't satisfied with the results at all. That means, I put that deck aside for a while, until certain reprints come out so that I can play it as a budget deck again. (I try to play the decks as budget decks, after the hype is over and reprints have come out.)
Definitely something I like about Blackwing. Dupes are often welcome because they're either not once per turn or you can banish an extra BW with Simoon
Oh yes! Blackwing is goated because of that. I love me some great archtypes that are not HOPT. Cards like that are a chefs kiss! My favorite is the fluffal's TOY VENDER. That is not once per turn at all! Deadly if it gets going.
Purrely also is super nice for dupe math because there is only 1 hard once per turn, and you are forced to do some discarding. So you just run nearly the entire package at 3
17:10 for real! My YGO experience has pretty much been 20% Dueling and 80% Deck building/testing. Coming up with ideas and crunching the numbers is just so much fun!
@@JessePerezStrategyGaming When playing out the deck at locals is just the test of if your deck idea really worked... And when you win so and so many matches, you don't go "yeah, I got so and so many th place" but you go like "Great, my deck works exacly as I thought."
This is why I love running a diverse, one or two-of sets of starters, board breakers and hand traps or running cards that I can utilize duplicates of. Clockwork Night dupes are great in my Cyber Dragon deck - I can discard one off of Chimera to get the Regulus search, and can discard extra Cydra/Cydark monsters off of Horizon.
@@JessePerezStrategyGaming I mean it won’t be anything new but the format is gonna be interesting. Because I will make an indeepth guide that is worthy of its title 😄
This reminds me of the game show whats behind the door math where people don't understand why changing doors gives you additional %33 chance to be right
Yes! The Monty Hall Problem! It was a gameshow and the host would allow to "change doors" after revealing a door. Those that switched were technically given more chance to win but phycology of it was most were superstitious and did not switch.
@@JessePerezStrategyGaming Yeah i remember learning about this more after i watched the movie 21 :D We don't have that gameshow in my country so, the math behind it was simply not thought to us or studied by our scholars :D
The behind the door math is this. You choose one of 3 doors, then you choose to stay or change. You always choose 1 of 3 but choosing to stay keeps your odds the same because you already did the 1 in 3. So Door 1, 2, 3, then Change or Stay. Let us say door 1 is correct. D1S(Door 1, Stay) is correct. D2S and D3S are wrong. Conversely, D2C and D3C are right, but D1C is wrong. You are more likely to get the right door by changing than by staying because the door you chose had a 2 in 3 of being wrong and you eliminated a guaranteed wrong door so changing gives you the best chance at winning , hence why the 2/3 or %66 chance comes up.
I just followed your advise and entered to 2 tournaments at my locals and man! my hands were goated!!! Is amazing how I was always able to get the card I needed.
CONGRATS! that feels so good that I was able to help you in some way with the deckbuilding process! I'm sure you skill as a duelist also really shined through as well! What deck did you use? Glad the hands were spicy!
@@JessePerezStrategyGaming I used Fire King snake eye but with board breakers, it was really good. I just lost to really good opponets but your videos helped me to improve for sure.
I hate bricking on multiples, I feel like 60 card decks are most prone to that happening because the math allows you to run those playsets but does not prevent you from drawing too many duplicates
Agreed! If all the cards in the decks are pretty much equal in strength then I find 60 card decks give some mathematical fluff to buffer your ratios so you don't see dupes. Which in a weird way makes 60 card decks just as or even more "consistent" than 40 card decks.
Nahhhh you can just reduce the number of playsets and run cards more semi, and single because not every card has the equal value when drawn. You wanna only play the play sets of specific cards that are beneficial to be drawn. Everything else can be less than 2 of and can be accessed through your engine :D
The downside of 60 cards is hand balance. Let’s say an ideal hand is 2 starters, 1 extender, 2 non-engine. You then try to build your deck with this proporsions. With a 40 and 60 cards deck you’ll get the same expented value of each card type in your hand. However the variation will be way higher in a 60 card deck because each draw have less influeance on the next draw.
@@ozimantv it also depends on how accessible a card is, you can get away with running strong hopt cards at 1 if they're searcheable, or at 2 if you want to mitigate bricking but run some draw power that makes you likely to see those cards during your plays anyway.
Iv got a “decksperiment” happening atm Using Vanquish Soul, But only running things like Razen at 3x Every hand trap is at 2, lost pretty much all flex cards and just went solid engine, the only 2 outliers are 2x Hop Ear squad. Even with Maxx C at 2x its in every hand almost. I also run retaliating C at 2x as its Shifter at home + Maxx C when its outed. Works way better than I expected it to
I really don't mean this in a bad way, but listening to you talk about math gives me "90's nerd' vibes lol. I really appreciate these videos and glad I found your channel.
So 3 playsets are starters, We all don't play snake eyes and have the luxury of our extenders and utilitys being starters or having the ability to get our decks "flowing". What's your opinion on playsets for extenders and utility for non-meta player's? Not fun player's, but competitors that choose not to use meta.
Imo case by case on how string the extender is and the situations it saves u from. If it's strong enough to trade 2 for 1 or better it might be worth the risk of duplicate. The math let's you make that well informed decision
@KeshavKrishnan okay, So you both are talking about the math. I understand that. my question about the math is this let's say seven playsets are correct, that leaves 4 playsets if 3 are starters and 19 other cards making a 40 card deck. Where does extenders and utility fall in those numbers? I get it's for me to decide, But mathematically what's correct? Maybe that's a future video?
@@galanda17 are they searcheable? If your extenders can be searched you can cut down the numbers, if you have a guaranteed way to search them they can be run at 1 even, it also depends on whether you can recycle them if you get into a grind, if it's even worth to think about recycling as your deck might not be able to hold on for more than a turn.
It's an interesting theory but ignores the reason why people run three copies of HOPT cards, it's not like we don't know that we can open multiples of these cards but its that the payoff for drawing those 3 ofs outweighs the risk of opening too many copies, it kinda links in with what Joshua Schmidt said about unequal card quality and I think it's particularly prudent here as you have to weigh the impact of your cards against the consistency of the card.
Yes! You are absolutely correct. Some cards are so good you have to play 3. Its this weight which I want to focus on. I am sure there are 5 playsets that MUST be played at 3 copies. But does the WHOLE DECK Really need to be at 3? That is the kind of discussion and mistakes I aim to prevent. It looks like you already knew this so this topic was a bit of a refresher for someone like you. Hopefully it was still entertaining. In any event, Thank you for watching!
@@JessePerezStrategyGaming ahh okayy I get you now yhh for sure I completely agree it's important not to run 3 ofs for the sake of 3 ofs. Also make no mistake even if I don't agree with all your videos I absolutely find them really entertaining, I'll happily admit all your videos I've seen are really well made.
For real dude! I lost count of all the times that broken shuffler gave me duplicates even when I run 2 ofs. Or when all the copies seem to be glued together and you just draw one after the other of the same.
I do mostly deck building myself, and I've really enjoyed your channel, I usually end up watching your videos twice. Would love to see a video where you go over the math for meta decks and help shed some light on what makes them perform better then other decks and I know you touch on it in this video
Thats awesome! Great to hear! *(although i do hope your watching twice because of entertainment and value rather than difficulty of subject matter - let me know if i need to be a better teacher lol) In any event glad you like the videos! Thanks for watching x2 :D
@JessePerezStrategyGaming you do a great job explaining and make it easy to follow along. I watch a second time to really hammer in some of the points your making, this way I can reflect and adjust as needed.
Great video, I'm a rogue player and I'm always trying something new instead of building and playing the exact same deck everyone plays based on online content.
Jesse I honestly think you deserve more fame and popularity for these niche Yugioh deckbuilding tips and tricks. Learned so much fron you, especially the going second video (was really great). Only recommendation I have is making the background more something in line with how theduellogs does his backgrounda. Great stuff as always, keep it up 🐻
Ahh this comment is 2 months old and I never responded to it! I wanted to say I try to take your advice to heart with the backgrounds and have them not be so crazy but hopefully my last couple videos have been a bit better. Thank you so much for the kind words they mean so much!
Awsome! I am glad you enjoyed and was able to learn something. I strive to talk about the secrets & the mathematical and psychological sides of yugioh that are never/rarely talked about and create discussions around them. Thanks for watching! glad you enjoyed!
Correct! Yes! I have alway gravitated towards decks that discard bc it allows for many many things. Load grave and also allow you to deal with dead cards. You’re the first person I’ve heard point this out before and it’s something I’m very very big on
This is honestly why I don’t like the design of HOPT effects. Even with the argument of “if it’s so strong that you can’t use two in a turn why is it okay to use the first copy?” out of the picture, the way that it impacts deck building in one of the worst-feeling ways possible is really obnoxious. You have these hyper compact powerful starters that play the entire deck by themselves and literally anything else in the deck is either a brick or an extender if your opponent decides to interact with you. The overuse and overreliance of the HOPT design has ruined modern yugioh :/
Your take is a take that most people would disagree with but it is a take i actually agree with if people give it more thought. Do not post this take on reddit or you will be brought to the slaughterhouse lol. For all intents and purposes, it is very annoying when deckbuilding and even is "anti-fun" when you draw cards you cannot use because it is only once per turn. They shouldn't be that strong then and should have a reduced power level. Now you summoned and drew that 1 card and because that resolved you go +7 and have 6 interruptions and if it didn't well now you have to pass and get OTKed by Accesscode talker or something.
This makes me feel a lot better, because the way I run it is that I like having consistency cards first and foremost and having hand traps at 1 copy of each, because odds are you only get a chance to use them once in a duel anyway
Even though I'm a mathematician, I couldn't get through more than the first few minutes, so apologies if you address my concerns. I also typically play 60 cards. Sometimes I don't mind seeing two of the same hard-once-per-turn cards, because it means I'll have a follow-up play for the next turn. (I'll use plants as an example, since it's what I know best): (1) 2x "Aromalilith Rosalina" (TCG) means I have a follow-up play the next turn. It's not perfect, but it keeps up the tempo. (2) 2x "Rikka Petal" (Master Duel) means I have a normal summon backup if the first is banished. People love to banish it with "Called by the Grave" in particular. (3) 2x "Rikka Princess" (Master Duel) I can summon one with it's own effect, and then potentially summon another with "Snowdrop the Rikka Fairy" for an Xyz play, or use the second to trigger "World Carrotweight Champion" This is a bigger issue with Spells/Traps than it is monsters, but I find that redundancy is not as bad as it might appear with such cards, especially if they provide high value and are prime targets for removal.
Yes a fellow mathematician! I do go over some benefits of having dupes and ways you can use them like forbidden droplet, diabeleestar discard, runick discard, super poly etc. There is a certain benefit too knowing we have a certain card again for follow-ups. The goal of the video was how we can maximize our 5 card hand so we can make every card count and create the best turn 1 board we can make or if going 2nd making sure every card counts when breaking through our opponents board. Our dupes might not be effective vs a 3-5interrupt board with potential handtraps. More for those that are aiming to min-max to the fullest so they can break these boards by making every card diverse.
I love your videos man, they genuinely help me improve allot, so far that i got props from my friends for my deck building skills 😂 Love your content, keep it up! ❤
lmao, I love the snide sarcasm when impersonating the comment section. This video is *MATHEMATICAL PROOF* that Konami is ruining their game with powercreep and staples.
in runick you usually want to discard something live like angler, polysub and so on so math changes a lot. and with stuff like allure the card is totally different if you are banishing despian tragedy but even then ur take on noob protection is so true
Yeah lol! You are right. I am playing vaalmonica for DC cup in MD and when i discard im looking to discard my metalfoes fusion or something of value and not the dupes. So you raise an excellent point that even in the decks that can afford to drop dupes you STILL want to have better targets then the dupes and the noob protection bonus is still there to help lol.
I think a good topic is to go over the math, and go over the scenarios of when to run 2 of a card instead of 3 or 1. Running a playset or a 1 of is a lot more obvious in most situations compared to when it makes sense to semi limit something in your deck.
Yes, running cards at 2 is a very interesting mathematical proposition. Whats crazy it that would entail putting a "weight" system on the cards of like a 1-10 where 10 is cards you absolutely NEED to see and 1 is cards you want in deck but only need 1 of. And then there is the random garent cards of the ones you want but not in hand (garnets) that have to have a weight of NULL or 0. Very difficult to do and would have to be on a deck by deck basis and even that would be subject to change based on meta, current flavor techs of the month etc.
As an avid enjoyer of the Endymion deck, which has limited starters which are mostly hopt, but can run a ton of deck thinning cards these videos are really interesting to help me find a good ratio balance.
I dont play TCG Yugioh but I play Duel Links competitively and your videos help me learn so much. I love these videos and these things still apply even if im not playing paper. Thank you its helped me alot.
When talking about starter nowadays, those are so good that not matter if it is HOPT, not matter if you may draw duplicates turn 1. The goal is to draw them no matter what because today's one card combo are completly absurd and can win you the game on their own. And so you don't have to think about deckbuild THAT much compared to older formats. You just put the maximum of the one card combo you are allowed to play and call it a day.
That is until you start playing seriously and wonder why your opponent doesn't brick as much as you do despite playing the mirror. It's all about the tiny percentages that will push you to the top at that point.
@@zeneck7387 So what do you do if you get Impermed on the Ash? If you do the wrong sequence (Ash first), you're basically ending your turn on the spot. Then you'll wish that second Ash was a handtrap instead. Just because you don't see it as a brick doesn't mean people can't exploit what you drew
@@GaussianEntity this literraly doesn't matter " what if my opponent drew the card he needed ". The fact of the matter is , one card combo are so strong, you will always max on them. Or perhaps you are telling me that the correct thing to do is to play one snake eye ash instead of 3 ?
@@zeneck7387 Okay so why don't most lists have 3 Poplar then? Why no 3 Oak? There's a reason people run the ratios they run. Same with other lists with similar engines.
Always love your videos - this is why I only run 4 playsets of HOTP - (3 if you don't count a pedulem card that drawing 2 off isn't a complete wate (I can pendulem and normal it). Thanks again for your deckbuilding help always love them.
Man, imagine Dangers wouldn't gamble. They would be hot Meta stuff. They discard, they replace themselves by drawing and their first effect is not once per turn...

I can honestly say that these numbers make sense for certain decks and Archetypes that use multiple cards. Whether they be In-Archetype cards or Staples. I think the Hardest part about crunching these numbers mostly comes from JUST THE DECK type you’re playing! For me: I run into this problem A lot with CUBICS! In fact that’s one of the best example Archetypes to use for this video.
Great video! Now I understand very clearly the playset rule due to the HOPT, i wasn’t really considering it. I’ll go later into the discord to check it out. I think it might be very cool to see a process of you trying to build a decklist of something as if you we’re going to compete in an event. It could shine a light on all the subjects that you touch in your videos and when to think about a particular context. It also might be useful to understand at which point during the deckbuilding you start making different scenarios, how can we test them and even compare them between one another. I know it might be a bit more of a complex video that is harder to simplify for the average audience, but for us nerds could be something very cool! 🤟🏼
I thought of a question that you can answer by turning it in a video: for Master Duel, if I have 3 Maxx "C", 3 droplet, and 3 dark ruler no more in a 40 card deck, combing the probabilities of P(X=x) 30.11% for Maxx "C" (sample size 5) and P(X=x) 43.5% for 3 droplet and 3 dark ruler no more (sample size 6), what would the math be behind the new P(X=x) and P(X≥1) for seeing either only 1 Maxx "C" in a starting hand of 5 or only 1 of either droplet or dark ruler no more in a going second hand of 6? I commented this on a video on a different channel. I basically want to know how to calculate the P(X=x) and P(X≥1) when it comes to combining handtraps and board breakers since the sample sizes (cards in hand) for them are different.
I don't know if I understand your question properly but I can say the following. In your 3/3/3 example of droplet, maxx C, and DRNM I got the following. For 5 card hands: 1) You have a 74.1 percent chance to see AT LEAST one of them 2) 43 % chance to see EXACTLY one of them. 3) 31% chance to see MORE THAN ONE of them. (could be a dupe still) For 6 card hands: 1) 80 percent chance to see AT LEAST one 2) 39.8% chance to see EXACTLY one. 3) 40.9% chance to see MORE THAN ONE. (could be dupe still) I use stattrek.com/online-calculator/hypergeometric. If your still have more questions I would invite you to the discord where i could probably have a better back and forth to determine what exactly you are looking for. As well as show you how you can calculate these yourself using math or calculators.
@@JessePerezStrategyGaming I am trying to determine how to calculate the percent chance to see AT LEAST one of the 9 cards (and percent chance to see EXACTLY one if possible). However, the calculation for this doesn't make sense in a 6 card hand because Maxx "C" is the only card that is not a good 6th card. Therefore, how do you calculate the percent chance to see AT LEAST one of the 9 cards while taking into account the fact that Maxx "C" can only be calculated in a 5 card hand? In other words, I am wanting to know how to calculate the percent chance to see AT LEAST one blowout handtrap (calculated only in a 5 card hand) or one boardbreaker (calculated only in a 6 card hand) when handtraps and boardbreakers are in a deck. We can continue via discord if you want a further back and forth.
One issue about small world is that mathematically it's a inherent -1 which means even using it to get to mathmech circular was dumb , chaos space has a similar issue and super poly requires you to run a fusion deck with generic fusions
Correct! But although it is a -1 which we both agree the combo that the card you searched with it could end up going +3 so in all it ends up net +2. Using your example of circular, you get +1 with the search from circular, another +1 with the XYZ, and then you could go into negate or even combo into Heatsoul for +1 on your turn and +1 again on start of next turn. So yes, you go -1 to search circular but you almost certainly end up positive at the end of the day.
@JessePerezStrategyGaming true but you already have 5 copies of circular with cynet mining, it would be good if you have a second copy of a card that you want to search for that gives a lot of pluses such as formud skipper
Some math you have to do the hard math on or you can use this stattrek.com/online-calculator/hypergeometric its a hypergeometric distribution probability calculator I use for some probabilities to find out the odds to see AT LEAST ONE card, EXACTLY ONE card or MORE THAN ONE card.
Yeah Imagine being a Danger or DarkWorld and trying to figure out that math lmao. The odds are always changing because you chew through the deck so much. :D
That’s a really great idea! There are a lot of cards in YGO that help you unbrick maybe ill do a mathematical breakdown of the best unbricking card to have if your deck has a couple of garnets/bricks. E.g magical mallet, reload, vortex trooper, card trader etc.
In the video you gave the example of drawing “safe” and “dangerous” cards. However, what it failed to mention was that those “safe” cards are almost by definition weak cards. If cards in a deck were completely interchange (i.e. having equal quality and function) then this “rule” would make sense, but obviously this is never the case. A card that wins me the game 90% of the time is worth more than 2 cards that each win me the game 69% of the time
Really depends on the carrd and deck. Engage is definitely not a weak card and it's absolutely a safe card, not all strong cards are hopt and some limitless activation cards are way better than hopt ones.
12:12 us Cyber Dragon players have to discard a SPELL OR TRAP to get Power Bond, and it's a cost, so we have to PRAY AND HOPE we get 1 extra spell in our hand other than a board breaker, and ENOUGH CONSISTANCY CARDS to actually make the play 😭 EDIT: Speaking of, Could we potentially have a SERIES of making the Best Decks out of an archetype? Thanks for sharing this knowledge, deck building is a mathematical art, can you make a video talking about how many cards exchange sidecking and the maths behind this
hey Jesse you seem very talented and versed in math that I have to ask: what is your profession? are you a math teacher, actuary, etc. ? your skill set could be used in various jobs that pay much better than yugioh
:D I graduated law school and currently work for my city that I live in. I used to tutor Statistics in my Undergraduate so I really enjoy that and video games/Yugioh is always fun. 😃 all of these videos are pure hobby and fun for me. 😁
He didn't mention it but ones like Ash are HOPT but still okay if you open 2. One for the first turn of each player. Protection from the opponent using Maxx C on your turn and prevent a search on theirs.
I believe I've never played more than 7 playsets and still I've drawed triplets multiple times 😂 Just rewatched my current Yubel decklist and there too I have many cards I don't mind seeing in multiple copies, like spirit of Yubel, too bad in my last local I drew exactly 3 spirits 💀
If you already have the 7 playsets for engine requirements/staples would you recommend running two ofs instead if it’s a card you want to see more of them
GREAT QUESTION! To be strictly math accurate with the video - yes. For clarity's sake if you did put 2 ofs in your deck the odds to draw both of those in your 5 card hand with a 40 card deck is 1.23%. So very low probability but just wanted to highlight that. Great question btw. I wasn't clear in the video so i hope this clears things up.
@@JessePerezStrategyGaming thank s for your answer! I was asking because if you play 2 ofs, as you draw one of them the other is now "unsafe" to draw. I believe that this is a different probability than drawing both 2 ofs independently but I'm not really sure if that is what you meant with your answer or not.
If all cards are of equal weight and value then Mathematically 0 is the correct answer but that is never true - some cards are potential worth way more for example, a starter card in certain decks could combo off and go +3/+4 making that card a MUST SEE and cards that search that card also very important as well. So its likely you would want have the best odds to see those cards first - then if you STILL want to see more copies you might consider cards such as "small world" to have an easier time finding such card. The ratios are very deck dependent and there is no right answer but i will say if you are at or about 6 playsets that are HOPT just carefully scrutinize them to make sure they are all COMPLETELY necessary. I.E. do you really need 3 copies your obscure tech cards, or can you replace some handtraps with other high impact handtraps so you don't need to worry about dupes, example do you need 3 ash in a format where top decks are built around playing around it anways? could 1 ash be replaced with a nibiru or a ghost orge? These are the questions we need to ask ourselves when we deckbuild so there technically is no right anwser. For example, when SHS came to masterduel i put 3 droll and lock bird in my deck and didn't think twice. Then when they fell out of favor and wasn't the flavor of the month i slowly removed copies again. Its an fun ebb and flow. :D
I really think you are a master duel only branded despia player xDDDD im trying to make a good consistent 40 card engine with branded and 5 cards despia + all the good board breakers and it's very helpfull
I think I got the hang of it im not a math Guy sadly I had to rewatch ur vidéos 4 Times to understand the rule . Sorry if im dumb there is just one thing I didnt understand if I have cards that allow me to draw should I lower my hopt playset in my deck are let it still at 7 ? ( sorry for my English im not a native )
You are correct! Yes! Because when you use a card that draws (say upstart goblin) you are essentially making your 40 card deck a 39 card deck because the card replaces itself. Therefore you are now more likely to run into duplicates. You got it! Let me know if there was anything confusion or how i could be more clear in the future to prevent you from watching so many times lol :) Thank you for watching!
@@JessePerezStrategyGaming everything was clear dont worry , its just im not a math Guy and I have to Watch several Times because I lack some oral comprehension . And actually its the most interesting of yugioh is the deck building and I like the way you explain . And technically speaking its our own représentation we put in the deck so Thats why I want to know more
I need some help over here, Jesse. When you say we need 16-17 two-card starters (and by this I think you mean about 8 pairs) in our deck and 12 one-card starters in our deck, how can you have room for enough for 16-20 hand traps as well as necessary combo pieces? Does having one-card starters available for your deck lessen the amount of two-card starters you should have in your deck? I ask because I play Memento and Unchained, but it’s also a general question
This was a great video! I have question I hope you can help me with, please. Let's say I'm running 2 ash, 2 Ogre and 2 Nib (for example) in a 40 card deck. 1.) would it be worth upping to a play set of three of each - making the deck a 43 card deck? 2.) what are your thoughts on this? Thank you for your time!
I am a BIG fan of Orge in the current format, and currently not a fan of ash and nib. It is very meta dependent I think you certainly could bump Ogre to 3 but leaving ash and Nib at 2 is fine. This is a meta call though. From a purely mathematical standpoint assuming ALL Cards are of great equal value and you want to see them in your opening hand, then you could run ALL 3 cards at 3 provided you are not running any more than 6 HOPT playsets in total in your 43 card deck. So my answer depends on if were looking at pure math, or subjectivity to a current meta.
@@JessePerezStrategyGaming Thank you so much. This really helped me. As a new subscriber, I've been going through your previous videos. I really appreciate your content.
I imagine this doesn’t exactly apply to soft once perturn cards such as infinite impermanence and effect veiler? As you want to / can see 2+ copies of each without a problem I would imagine
I like yu-gi-oh maths, but this argument is flawed. Sometimes you have cards that you would rather open 2 copies off than none. Some decks (Horus for example) really needs to draw cards, get into King's Sarcophagus. But you also have to throw cards to the graveyard to set up, so drawing duplicates is not a problem. Running more playsets makes the deck's strategy more consistent. It's not "bad deck building protection", it helps to mitigate the risk of running a playset of cards you want to see a lot. Tenpai really isn't strong without the field spell, so you run as many copies of it as possible, even if drawing multiples of it are not playable. If Terraforming was at 3, they would play essentially SIX copies of the field spell, that is how good it is. Furthermore, it gets them into a one card combo, so you are not reliant on other cards to get you playing, which changes the ratios and card choices of your deck too. Deck building has so many nuances and every deck builds differently.
LMAFO if you didn't put the sarcastic smirk at the end of your comment i think i was going to type an essay with length and substance that would have made Alexander Hamilton and Ben Franklin tremble!
@@JessePerezStrategyGamingIf I am honest I LOVE your vids because you discuss the actual math that backs up your claims. Not just going based on a vibe check or what is popular at the time!
I like your discussion about probabilistic in yugioh game 👍🏻 But I have a hard time about the "Garnet" card ratio or a good card if it's only on the deck. Maybe you can help me to find the right ratio for the card and in the future it can be useful for those who try to "cook" the deck. Thankyou
If its a problem seeing the garnet card to often you can always up the amount of cards in the deck to dilute the chances of seeing it. If you have a "powerhouse card" that you want to see as often as possible and don't want to increase deck size then consider cards that mulligan your hand and place cards back into the deck like "illusion of chaos" and then it puts the card back while allowing you to search for a magician souls which can ss itself and draw additional cards as well to help you find the powerhouse while putting your garnet back into the deck. (this works best with spell/trap heavy decks) I would need to know the garnet or deck specifically to give you more tailored advice specific to your problem. If you have time come check out the discord I could give more indepth advice there, then here and you can post your decklist etc. But for now i hope this general advice helps! thanks for watching!
There are decks with necessary garnet If it doesn't matter you hard draw the garnet/a card that supposed in the deck just run 1 If it DOES matter you hard draw it is better and necessary run 2 since even the chance of draw 1 copy of a single card in a deck is 12.5% (in 40 card deck), it can ruin your game if you draw it and can't combo with it if it is in the deck
17:12 "I spend more time deckbuilding than I do playing the game." I totally understand you, man.
i do the same
When he said that I was like “I’m not the only one?” 😂
Idk, it’s so rewarding to build a deck to accomplish a goal and then when you test/play with said deck and it just accomplished the goal you had in mind, it’s such an excitement high
This is very good advice. I have always had trouble deckbuilding, but you've articulated the problems and what one should do to address them.
Thank you! I am glad this was informative and helped with your deckbuilding! Thank you for the kind words and thanks for watching!
@@JessePerezStrategyGaming nothing quite like triggering Black Whirlwind 3 times in the same turn.
Purrely also is super nice for dupe math because there is only 1 hard once per turn, and you are forced to do some discarding. So you just run nearly the entire package at 3

I saw that movie too! i loved the card counting and the tactics they used in blackjack! Great movie :D
@@JessePerezStrategyGaming Yeah awesome movie :D

@@lucanalon1576 Not completely correct but close enough
@@ozimantv it also depends on how accessible a card is, you can get away with running strong hopt cards at 1 if they're searcheable, or at 2 if you want to mitigate bricking but run some draw power that makes you likely to see those cards during your plays anyway.
Iv got a “decksperiment” happening atm
Using Vanquish Soul, But only running things like Razen at 3x
Every hand trap is at 2, lost pretty much all flex cards and just went solid engine, the only 2 outliers are 2x Hop Ear squad.
Even with Maxx C at 2x its in every hand almost. I also run retaliating C at 2x as its Shifter at home + Maxx C when its outed.

I'd keep playsets for starters and most extenders can be run at two. Gives consistancy without high risk of drawing it when it rather be in deck
Most decks have 3 Starters now and several extenders. Sometimes both. Snake Eyes did not just come put of nowhere.

This is the first new thing in yugioh I’ve learned in years. Good stuff fr. Never thought of how many playsets could affect things.
Plus if you have more of them at one copy each, you’re more likely to run into something you can Crossout
@@Poppipower I keep telling myself to get Crossout lol
Even though I'm a mathematician, I couldn't get through more than the first few minutes, so apologies if you address my concerns. I also typically play 60 cards.
Sometimes I don't mind seeing two of the same hard-once-per-turn cards, because it means I'll have a follow-up play for the next turn. (I'll use plants as an example, since it's what I know best):
(1) 2x "Aromalilith Rosalina" (TCG) means I have a follow-up play the next turn. It's not perfect, but it keeps up the tempo.
(2) 2x "Rikka Petal" (Master Duel) means I have a normal summon backup if the first is banished. People love to banish it with "Called by the Grave" in particular.
(3) 2x "Rikka Princess" (Master Duel) I can summon one with it's own effect, and then potentially summon another with "Snowdrop the Rikka Fairy" for an Xyz play, or use the second to trigger "World Carrotweight Champion"
This is a bigger issue with Spells/Traps than it is monsters, but I find that redundancy is not as bad as it might appear with such cards, especially if they provide high value and are prime targets for removal.
I love your videos man, they genuinely help me improve allot, so far that i got props from my friends for my deck building skills 😂

in runick you usually want to discard something live like angler, polysub and so on so math changes a lot. and with stuff like allure the card is totally different if you are banishing despian tragedy
but even then ur take on noob protection is so true
I agree, this game have the major fun in the building process, my favorite step is to look out & get the cards

@@GaussianEntity you don't " brick " when you draw 2 snake eye ash / diabel or wanted.
@@zeneck7387 So what do you do if you get Impermed on the Ash? If you do the wrong sequence (Ash first), you're basically ending your turn on the spot. Then you'll wish that second Ash was a handtrap instead.

I can honestly say that these numbers make sense for certain decks and Archetypes that use multiple cards. Whether they be In-Archetype cards or Staples.
I think the Hardest part about crunching these numbers mostly comes from JUST THE DECK type you’re playing!

I see you have gotten more detailed in your explanations! Thanks for that, great video Jesse
I thought of a question that you can answer by turning it in a video:
for Master Duel, if I have 3 Maxx "C", 3 droplet, and 3 dark ruler no more in a 40 card deck, combing the probabilities of P(X=x) 30.11% for Maxx "C" (sample size 5) and P(X=x) 43.5% for 3 droplet and 3 dark ruler no more (sample size 6), what would the math be behind the new P(X=x) and P(X≥1) for seeing either only 1 Maxx "C" in a starting hand of 5 or only 1 of either droplet or dark ruler no more in a going second hand of 6?
I commented this on a video on a different channel. I basically want to know how to calculate the P(X=x) and P(X≥1) when it comes to combining handtraps and board breakers since the sample sizes (cards in hand) for them are different.
I don't know if I understand your question properly but I can say the following.
In your 3/3/3 example of droplet, maxx C, and DRNM I got the following.
For 5 card hands:
1) You have a 74.1 percent chance to see AT LEAST one of them
2) 43 % chance to see EXACTLY one of them.
3) 31% chance to see MORE THAN ONE of them. (could be a dupe still)
For 6 card hands:
1) 80 percent chance to see AT LEAST one
2) 39.8% chance to see EXACTLY one.
3) 40.9% chance to see MORE THAN ONE. (could be dupe still)
I use stattrek.com/online-calculator/hypergeometric.

Hey how did you do on your finals!? You didn't think i forgot did you! :) Hoping you crushed it!

I think this has become one of my favourite Yu-Gi-Oh channels to watch.
12:12 us Cyber Dragon players have to discard a SPELL OR TRAP to get Power Bond, and it's a cost, so we have to PRAY AND HOPE we get 1 extra spell in our hand other than a board breaker, and ENOUGH CONSISTANCY CARDS to actually make the play 😭
EDIT:
Speaking of, Could we potentially have a SERIES of making the Best Decks out of an archetype? Like Ratio of cards wise. We could post comments and you do a Deck from a comment that you think would be interesting to make! I'd love the series, PLUS for any person in the future looking to have a better version of their deck, it could have already been covered on your channel! I appreciate all your Yugioh calculation videos :) Thank you! (Yes I'd love a better Cyber Dragon deck x) Idk what to go for, if I go for Handtraps, they continue to play, If I go for board Breakers, they have destruction protection or negate my *Cyber Eltanin* That sends to GY.
This is my current Deck, and it's the best it's been so far, but When you need MINIMUM 3 Board Breakers in your hand, AND on top of that an extra spell or trap TO DISCARD, and then the last 2 cards need to be starters, it's cooked x)

You would make a really good prof. or Math teacher, really good to understand!
I personally like odd numbers for deck size 43 to 47 seems perfect for me
I used to leave the volume on my television on an odd number. Yes I live life on the edge. :D
@@JessePerezStrategyGaming The only way to live! :^)
Where is my dunce hat?😢 at least we have Jesse to bless us with his knowledge
No one is a dunce! We get a little wiser everyday! Like when "time wizard" was used on Dark Magician we just get smarter and more powerful!
Back at it again I see!
Bad deck building protection is such a funny concept.
I like deck building too. It's fun to theorycraft the ratios.
gonna be binging your videos because you have subtitles, and I can watch at work :D Maybe I'll learn something too.....
Love your videos .Helped my deck building some much .and I still play true Draco
Great video thanks for making it easy big guy
Thanks for sharing this knowledge, deck building is a mathematical art, can you make a video talking about how many cards exchange sidecking and the maths behind this
wow another great vid! thanks for sharing the knowledge:)
hey Jesse you seem very talented and versed in math that I have to ask: what is your profession? are you a math teacher, actuary, etc. ? your skill set could be used in various jobs that pay much better than yugioh
:D I graduated law school and currently work for my city that I live in. I used to tutor Statistics in my Undergraduate so I really enjoy that and video games/Yugioh is always fun. 😃 all of these videos are pure hobby and fun for me. 😁
Very helpful for visualising how 3 of hand traps can screw me over
He didn't mention it but ones like Ash are HOPT but still okay if you open 2. One for the first turn of each player. Protection from the opponent using Maxx C on your turn and prevent a search on theirs.
I believe I've never played more than 7 playsets and still I've drawed triplets multiple times 😂
Just rewatched my current Yubel decklist and there too I have many cards I don't mind seeing in multiple copies, like spirit of Yubel, too bad in my last local I drew exactly 3 spirits 💀
Thank you Calculator
As a Tenpai player I get to play an extra playset since one of those playsets is Heat Wave
love the duelists of the roses music
If you already have the 7 playsets for engine requirements/staples would you recommend running two ofs instead if it’s a card you want to see more of them
Does the math with the 7 playset deck assume that the 21 other "safe" cards are all one ofs?
Hey question, do you count sesrch cards (spell cards who search starters) as starters themselves?
Yes, if a searcher can add a starter then essentially its like you started with that in hand.
So how many playsets should I run in a 40 card deck?
Great content. New subscriber 😄Id like to apply that for speed duel. Do you have content about speed?
Awesome. If i only care for the 6th card to have at least 51% chance of being safe in a 42 card deck, how many playsets can i run?
GREAT video Jesse!
These videos make me feel like im in duel school.
Certainly this is what Dr. Crowler was teaching and what Bastion was goin on about in GX :D
7:32 41% to not draw my second Nibiru. Lucky me 😂
Both the winner of German nationals and 2nd place at UK nationals ran 12 playsets.
You got it! Let me know if there was anything confusion or how i could be more clear in the future to prevent you from watching so many times lol :)
Thank you for watching!
I really appreciate your content.
went to check my Cyber Dragon deck halfway through, turns out I was doing alright lmao (6 playsets)
you should make a vid about the ages old question of, the ratio of allures/trade ins vs darks/level 8s
You know, I wasn't willing to trust your math until you said "it's so easy a kindergartener can do it." Spoken like a true math professor there!
I imagine this doesn’t exactly apply to soft once perturn cards such as infinite impermanence and effect veiler? As you want to / can see 2+ copies of each without a problem I would imagine
I apologize, commented half way through and just saw you mentioned these particular cards XD
You forgot about hard once per turn cards… 😏
LMAFO if you didn't put the sarcastic smirk at the end of your comment i think i was going to type an essay with length and substance that would have made Alexander Hamilton and Ben Franklin tremble!
@@JessePerezStrategyGamingIf I am honest I LOVE your vids because you discuss the actual math that backs up your claims. Not just going based on a vibe check or what is popular at the time!
This isnt a luck factor its heart of the cards factor
What a pleasant surprise on my reocmmedatiom feed. Nice video, I think very similarly with my builds too. Subbed 👍
I like your discussion about probabilistic in yugioh game 👍🏻
But I have a hard time about the "Garnet" card ratio or a good card if it's only on the deck.
(this works best with spell/trap heavy decks)
I would need to know the garnet or deck specifically to give you more tailored advice specific to your problem. If you have time come check out the discord I could give more indepth advice there, then here and you can post your decklist etc.
But for now i hope this general advice helps! thanks for watching!
There are decks with necessary garnet
If it doesn't matter you hard draw the garnet/a card that supposed in the deck just run 1
If it DOES matter you hard draw it is better and necessary run 2 since even the chance of draw 1 copy of a single card in a deck is 12.5% (in 40 card deck), it can ruin your game if you draw it and can't combo with it if it is in the deck
Any recommendations to make a good gouki deck
Please make a mathematically correct branded despia deck
