1080p vs 5mp Security Camera

  • www.cctvcamera... - Here is a comparison of video surveillance footage recorded using a 1080p vs 5mp security camera. CCTV Camera Pros used two bullet cameras for this test.
Both of the cameras are AHD format (analog high definition) and they are both connected to the same iDVR-PRO surveillance DVR using RG59 Siamese coax cable. The video was recorded at 4K resolution.
The video compares the video quality using the DVR's built-in digital zoom capability. Video of a person's face and a license plate are zoomed in on at 3x zoom.
The video also shows a side-by-side comparison of the screenshots captured with the 1080p and 5mp security camera.
You can see in the video that a 5mp security camera captures video clearer than a 1080p camera. This was obviously expected. However, the difference is not as big as we expected. Considering that a 5 megapixel camera is 2.5 times the resolution of a 1080p camera, we expected the difference to be more noticeable.
When you are designing a video surveillance system, you must consider additional factors such as the additional disk storage that is required for 5mp video recording vs 1080p. Yes, hard drives are much cheaper nowadays but it is still a cost trade-off.
At the time we made this video (October of 2019), CCTV Camera Pros is still supplying many more 1080p (2 megapixel cameras) than we are 5 megapixel. 5 megapixel is gaining more momentum but 1080p is still the most popular right now as it seems to be a good balance of video quality and economical storage cost.
Another consideration is that 5 megapixel resolution is not 16:9 aspect ratio, it is 5:4 aspect ratio. On a typical HD TV or monitor, the video image will be stretched to fill the screen. This is because most monitors and TVs are 16:9 aspect ratio.
Last, the hybrid 5mp security cameras that we supply also work in 4mp resolution which is 16:9 aspect ratio. And, iDVR-PRO surveillance DVRs also support 4mp resolution cameras. So, for customers that want to go higher than 1080p resolution but do not like the way 5 megapixel resolution is stretched, 4 megapixel may be a good compromise. I plan on comparing 1080p vs 4mp in another video soon.

I have a question, the NVR that u used is for 2MP or 5MP or it doesn't matter? let us say I have 2MP ip cameras which are come in a bundle with the NVR. and by the time, I want to add 5MP IP camera, which I buy it separately. Can I connect that 5MP IP camera into the NVR?

One REALLY has to be careful with claims of "1080whatever". It often refers to the final displayed output capability on a screen, and may have nothing to with the camera quality. I've seen 0.3MP (not 3.0MP) cameras advertised as "High Resolution 1080HD" because they use hardware or software/firmware to CONVERT a really crappy low-resolution image to DISPLAY at 1920x1080p on the DISPLAY and all you'll see are fuzzy blobs where there should be clear faces. I've seen a lot of misdirection in camera specs in surveillance system specifications especially (but not limited to) when buying from dirt-cheap sellers/manufacturers. Some sellers fix their product description when told about the problem, while others just ignore the information.

That happens with no-brand or crap-brand cameras. I had purchased a no-brand from a local guy who claimed it was a 2MP camera, but the shots were saved at 640x360 or about 9 times lower resolution.
I bought an Imou/Dahua WiFi camera with claimed 2MP and that's what it actually was.
One trick those junk cameras use to give the impression of a higher resolution is much narrower field of view, basically they optically zoom it in, give you about 4 times less area coverage at about 8-10 times lower resolution, while a quality camera covers 4 times larger area with 8-10 times more pixels, so the end result is that the same area covered by the junk camera looks only about twice as bad.

@@cctvcamerapros 1080p is the same as 2MP. 1920*1080 = 2,073,600 or in other words, 2.07MP. I can immediately tell the 2mp camera is simply not achieving the claimed 1080p, it looks very soft for 1080p, closer to 960H or 1200TVL, or about as good as a 720p youtube video. I've even seen DVD movies in 480p look sharper and clearer.
5MP might be looking better because A) it has a better sensor and B) the 2MP has a particular garbage sensor and the DSP is over-sharpening it.

I have an 8 channel DVR with 8 2MP 1080p cameras on it. When I go to the channel type, it show 5M-N: 8, 4M-N8, 1080N: 8, AND 1080P: 4. I What happens if I connect a 5MP camera to my system? Do I have to set the channel type to 1080N (Since I have 8 cameras) and the 5MP runs at a lower resolution, or can I set it to 5M-N to run the 5MP camera at its best resolution and the others will simply default to their 1080N or 1080P?

    • @edinfific2576
      @edinfific2576 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

The 5M-N is not really 5MP, but about half as much, or less. Instead of being 2880x1620 (in my specific case), it is actually 1440x1620. It is about 15% better than 2MP, you won't see the difference. It is done in cheaper versions of DVRs to save on processing power while still supporting 5MP cameras.
You can use different resolutions and encoding settings for each channel separately without problems.

this may be old, but you didnt add a few things. refresh rate, even if you have a great camera if it can do 60fps or faster things can blur. Another point is color depth, the number of colors the camera can see, which is the camera and the hardware controlling it. 16 million is a good place to start, but this is something Very few even touch on. Then there is FOCUS. Find a camera that auto focus, of Adjustable focus. A camera without focus, is almost worthless outside. As the focus point is generally 12 feet to 16 AT MOST.
With the advent of Current SLR Camera tech, these camera's should be Much better then they are selling. If you could get a Cannon pocket camera with all the features, you Would have allot better options. The only thing gained here is water proofing.

@@cctvcamerapros no i was just confused what resolution of 5mp was and not sure if this is just a 1080p camera but shoots at 5mp vs a normal 1080p..
most of the time people understand from monitors resolution for comparison that there is 1080p, then 2k, and 4k monitors..
So 2k is better than a 1080p. and 4k is better than 2k etc...
When you put in title 5mp vs 1080p, then it is hard for us to know that 5mp is actually higher resolution than 1080p (which is actually 2mp)
It would be good in future if you put
      e.g. 5mp (actual resolution)
      ie 5mp (2560x1960)
Then we know that 5mp is actually higher resolution than 1080p..

last 5 years the Manufacturers start to use marketing labels and expressions for nothing new its not that much big difference to pay 30% or 40% more specially the Frame rate on 5mp will be around 20FPs usually
also sometime the higher resolution is for bigger sensor by mean you get wider view but with same Quality of image so in the Scenario of replacing same Camera from 2mp to 5mp you will not notice any thing just the View Angle become wider and same thing for 4K
at other Side most of the Consumers Peoducts lite or even some Pro Series support lower Frame Rate as Resolution goes Higher (4k@15 , 5mp@20 , 4mp@25\30 ) so reading License Plate become impossible at night with 3dNR even if car move at low speed 20 -30 KM\H
Users must confrm all Camera Details and real Encoding and Recording Parameters to Confirm that they are Spend Money for Upgrade not Paying For the Same Quality
