Great ideas! Any tips on installing battens on plaster walls? My house is from the 20’s and is presenting some challenges.
You may be able to get away with some extra strong adhesive that will work with plaster/masonry since it is more decorative than structural. Installing the battens with plaster/masonry anchors will be the most secure option but would be more time consuming.

The batten boards ended up covering them up!
