More than just the cape. He’s buried in the entire Dracula attire from the movies. He was poor when he died and did not have a decent suit to be buried in. The studio was asked and they said no to giving one of the costumes. Legend has it Boris Karloff, Peter Lorrie and Lon Chaney Jr. snuck into the prop room and stole the costume. Once it came out the studio just let it ride as they did not want it known they would not just donate one of the costumes. I can’t remember if it was Carson or not, but Karloff told this in an interview prior to his death.
Great video. He was originally from Hungary and fought in a war there and was wounded which led to him bring on constant pain killers most likely leading to addiction. My grandfather spoke Hungarian as did my great grandmother and they always pronounced his name as (Lugo-shy). My great grandma who was from Hungary was very superstitious and although we would talk about vampires or witches when I was young, you could still see that these things troubled her. I really miss them.
The first time I visited Bela's Grave it was 1990 , I was 14 years old .. Bing Crosby is about 5 feet away , Jack Haley The Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz is about 30 feet away .. and a Titanic surviver who lived to be in her 80's is about 350 feet away .. also Rita Hayworth , Sharon Tate , and Jackie Coogan are a stones throw away from Bela's grave , its a party for sure in that section .. Fred MacMurray , John Candy and Ray Bolger ( The Scarecrow ) are watching from the Mausoleum .. Ricardo Montalban and Chris Penn are up the hill and around the corner .. None of the 3 Stooges are buried at Holy Cross Cemetery ... But Moe is not far away , he is hanging out with Micheal Landon , Leonard Nimoy , and Vic Morrow at Hill Side a few blocks away .. Enjoy ..
Bing Crosby, Bela Lugosi and Jack Haley all buried almost together in Kalver City. Im surprised how modest these memorials are. Thanks for scouting them out for us.
Keep in mind that this was a VERY different neighborhood back in the 1950s. Most of these were newer buildings and it was much cleaner and well kept area back then.
"Mina, Come Here!! " The Classic Bela Lugosi line in "Dracula (1931). Classic Bela,Classic Movie. As a kid, he could give you nightmares, long after the movies he starred in had ended.
This is the first time I ever heard Bela Lugosi had trouble speaking English, I saw his films including his last and though he had a heavy Hungarian accent his English was just fine.
It's nice that people still put flowers down at the gravesites of these stars. It would be sweet if there was a blue plaque on the building saying he lived there and even if it gets demolished the new building could have a marker. It's sad the resident didn't know who he was but at least you enlightened them. It's so important to keep cinematic history alive.
It seems like a lot of cemeteries around California are like this. Low modest markers to more easily cut the grass. I'm surprised a star of Lugosi's stature isn't resting at Hollywood Forever.
I really like how you show the nooks and crannies that are so easily overlooked…(the apartment stairwell), you uncover this info in your investigation and I so enjoy it…the community where he lived…so intriguing. Great vid…keep em coming, very enjoyable.
So interesting. I didn't realize he had finally add to live and then pass away in such meager circumstances I learned something from each one of your videos. Thanks so much for bringing it to us
Thank you for the video!! It would have to be awesome knowing you were looking up the same steps he went up and down!! Each time I see a video of a celebrity's grave I can't help but wonder which other celebrities may have attended their funerals and stood where you stood! Thanks again!! You have a great job!!!
I’m surprised that Bing Crosby has such a modest burial place. He still had a major reputation when he passed, and was one of Hollywood and music’s biggest names. Not only that, but he was one of the wealthiest people in show business.
Years ago I was visiting some new acquaintances who lived in Outpost Park, which is a luxurious housing development in the foothills of Hollywood built in the 1930s. At one time their home was owned by Bela Lugosi. Like many Hollywood stars, he died penniless.
His grandson Greg (same last name) was in my graduating class at La Canada High School, near Pasadena CA. I never really asked him about his grandfather as I was not familiar with his acting career although school friends told me that in his house were life size statues of Bella dressed in Dracula costumes.
The closest Bela got to an Academy Award was when Martin Landau won an Oscar for playing Bela Lugosi in the Ed Wood film. Thanks for the tour! RIP Bela! He turned down playing the Frankenstein monster and Karloff got the part. The rest is history.
I love Bela have ever since I was young!!!! He was the Best dracula of all and had such great flowing kind of motions I loved his accent !! But has always broke my heart how he died he had finally gotten clean but studios still would use him except Ed Woods b-movies!! They'll never be another bela he was class and suave!! They actioned off a cape that was supposed to be his that black silk with a rose gold lining it was beautiful and alot of drapey fabric ,the spendy auction where sell celebs items . You were legionary. R.I.P. Bela ❤
The person u spoke to must have been pretty young to not know who Bela Lugosi was. He died 12 yrs before I was born but I knew who he was growing up. Maybe because Im into horror movies and the youth now a days are all into Anime....Idk but thank u for the great video!
Nice interesting video, i live in LA but did not know he lived there, iam sure back in those days the area where he lived must of been much nicer.Lagosi and Karlof are great horror legends
Amazing how many people don't know who he was! I wonder if the people that live there now would freak out if they knew he died there. I'm sure when he was alive it looked a lot better...
since you mentioned Ed Wood, maybe you could show his final apartment, and also the place where he died. he was living with his friend Peter Coe. both he and Kathy were evicted from the apartment on Yucca street.
@@FreyzelProductions awesome. I've been a big fan of both Bela and Ed since I was a kid. The Ed Wood movie came out when I was 14. I've watched it more times than I can count.
I remember seeing a news report about a company renovating the old Ed Wood studios. It might have been a video production company on Sunset, I think. It was a while ago so I'm not sure. It sounded interesting.
@@FreyzelProductions Check out the Alto Nido Apartments when you're in the area. It's a block east and up the hill on Ivar. Dudley Manlove, who played Eros in Plan Nine, lived there at the time Plan Nine was made.
Thanks! I’ve walked by the apartment and grave in the past. There’s also Bela Lugosi’s main house, on Outlook Drive, sort of behind the Hollywood Bowl. It still has light fixtures on the outside that looks sort of like vampire bats, as I recall, which I think were original. Holy cross cemetery also has Lawrence Welk.
not far from my apartment building, that was a newer building in 1956, but had to have been built before 1954, because Los Angeles changed car parking requirements for newly built apartment buildings thar year, kicking off the dingbat apartment era, with parking spots/carports at the front of the buildings
Enjoyed the video. That is a bad area, it is evident by the wrought iron bars present everywhere to prevent crimes against the tenants. Not a good place to go at night. Forty years ago it was a much nicer place to live, but not anymore. I was born and raised 6-7 miles northeast from that location in the Silverlake community
Actually, Harold Way is just off of Sunset Blvd. Not the Sunset Strip. This video was shot in Hollywood. The Strip is in West Hollywood. The Strip is about 3 miles west of where this video was taken. The Strip is bordered on the east by Crescent Heights and it ends in the west just a few blocks west of Doheny Drive. I used to work at a Prop House just down the street on Santa Monica Blvd for 41 years.
Interesting. BTW, that apartment building was probably brand new when Lugosi moved in and looked very different from the way it looks today. I'm sure that brick fence was not ther and the landscaping was probably more lush, too. It was probably considered a mid level apartment building. Those apartments were usually larger than your modern units today.
If you go on Google Maps Street View, you can see an almost ghost like image of an elderly man standing in the driveway of this building on 5620 Harold Way. The pics were taken in 2021.
Greetings from southern Ontario Canada I really enjoyed the video, both apartments had satellite dishes on the roof and usually these rental buildings seldom get torn down mainly because of convenience factors like shopping or public transportation close by but everything is different south of the border
Former coworker of mine was reluctant to move from California as she would no longer be near the gravesites of Hollywood stars, particularly Bela Lugosi's. If you are in that category you need psychiatric help.
I visited Bela Lugosi's grave several months ago. That's my white guitar pick still in there, yay! 😁 There was a bat cut out before but I see it's not there anymore.
Dracula and Frankenstein best ever horror films. Anything with Lugosi and Karloff was gold.
100%
Bela Lugosi is one of my favorites, great video!
Great video. Glad to see his final resting place. I'm sure that apartment building was nicer back in the day. 😢 May he RIP 🙏
I would hope so..
It was probably new and built in the 50s
I hope so because that apartment building is horrid.
I thought the cape was put on the aution block by Bela Lugosi Jr.
@ @ReneeBraxton
I've heard he was burried wearing it. 😳 Maybe there's more than one cape 🤷♀️
More than just the cape. He’s buried in the entire Dracula attire from the movies. He was poor when he died and did not have a decent suit to be buried in. Thanks for taking us along on another great Hollywood history adventure!
Cristopher Lee was also a great vampire in the movies he made in the early 1960s.
Christopher Lee scared the hell out of me.
Wow, this is awesome! These apartments are referred to as "Ding-bats" This is so cool, I am in LA...I am gonna swing by and check this out!

Amazing how the grave markers are so understated given the magnitude of the celebrity.
