I like how Rosco even had Loretta dance during the song, Notice Me. A song that Sam seemed to want to be a bit sad and melancholy, given it was about a girl wondering what it would take for her guy friend to notice her the way that she so desperately wanted. Instead, your focus ended up being all on all the flips and stuff that Loretta was doing.
We need a sequel where Sam has a breakdown because her consciousness is split into herself and Loretta. And they both fight for control over Sam’s body.
I thought it was weird too but there's a slight explanation, they thought she was a hologram so why try and catch someone who isn't in any danger? But even with this detail in mind, I have a hard time believing that people's natural reaction wouldn't be to try and catch her when on a superficial level, or in this case a literal level, it looks no different from a real person falling and this tech is so new people wouldn't be desensitized to it.
What I never understood about the movie is that the hologram girl was suppose to be perfect, but she wasn't even that good a dancer. Sure, she was pretty, energetic, and athletic, but she had no timing or rhythm, barely any coordination, and zero grace. Must be because she's made up of cover models, not professional dancers.
probably giving more credit than the writers ever even thought up, but he'd need to implement a seamless, good AI for that. you'd need an algorithm (?) that mimics natural, intuitive rhythm which he didn't do given she looks like a ragdoll most times (but here, I guess she's "beyond needing" something like that and is basically a digital human?). I think she was casted primarily for her looks and delivery of robotic lines, but she could move enough for them to make it look impressive to a kid viewer. no hate though, this movie was my jam lol
@@washedblue Honestly even as a kid I thought the character wasn’t that great. I think they made her mediocre on purpose to not give actual kids a complex
Well her dancing was mostly flips and such too. And the times Rosco had her do those things was odd. Notice Me is kind of a melancholy song(at least the way Sam sang it/intended it), but my god did Loretta do a ton of flips. This was during a song where the girl in the song was wondering what it would take for the guy they had a crush on them to look at them they way they wanted. Your focus ended up being more on that than the actual song lyrics because of that.
Fun fact: one of the writers is also a YA novelist, and the only series of his I ever read was about teens and kids stuck in a purgatory state after death, with one of the main characters learning how to possess living people. I barely remember any of it except that it gave me some seriously spooky vibes as a kid, so I get the impression that's the guy we have to thank for the weird horror-like themes in this film lol.

I kind of like the coma scene, especially when Sam says "It's broken" and then Loretta calmly reassures her with "Your hardware needs to be rewired, that's all." The loneliness of the setting and hopelessness of her thinking she's broken reminds me of the mental state of depression. It's nice to hear from someone else that there's hope. It is shown beautifully with the lush greenery filling the desert. Nick says it best himself, "Is she a prisoner in her own mind?" Yes, she is. I think the coma is a metaphor for depression. I personally really like the writing of this movie and the actor who played Samantha. I wish the themes of misogyny and the abuse of musical/intellectual property were explored more, but that's a lot of nuiance to ask of a DCOM.
Jessica. Yes. It would be great if someone could buy the rights to the script and proofread everything. The new scriptwriter and director could do a new version and a promising movie on the topics you have stated: misogyny, and abuse of musical/intellectual property. AI rights, AI autonomy, as well as AI holographic presence or Robotic presence. And how either one or both could be a great application to be a Nurse Assistant [to CNAs or RNs], Journal Outlet [for children with dyslexia or autism], or a Personal Guide [other than Alexa from Google] this personal guide will guide blind people, the small AI robot integrated with GPS can keep people safe inside the home, walking the street, or simply going outside to drink iced tea on the porch, we know that echolocation has been used by animals the same principle can be applied to the AI Robot Assist And then the creator Roscoe doesn't want to sell Loretta's programming rights to this company because he still sees her as a sexual object. Then we have the bandmates without making it too #Woke set up an online campaign to free Loretta. Recreate other holographic persons to help the less fortunate and how AIs have revolutionized medicine, education, whichever else. And women come forward with their stories of survival from an abusive patron, manager, or abusive partner. A year later then we see [newcomer female CEO] who wishes to make this a reality. In the end, Roscoe and his father are left penniless and alone in a small Apt, without anyone to fund their new projects.
@@hameley12 I love your re-write! But like I said before, wayy too much to ask of a DCOM lol I actually know the writer of Pixel Perfect -- he went to high school and college with my mom and they are super close friends to this day. He said he had to take a lot out and simplify a lot of other messages (similar to the ones you and I both stated) that would have otherwise made it an awesome movie. All bc Disney kept sending his script back with more revisions. That's Disney for ya, taking out anything remotely edgy and/or substantive and replacing it with vanilla.
@@PBthesquirrel I did not know if you knew the script writer, that's new info to me. But we the fans can only hope that someday someone can revise it and give it a 360 redo for the modern era -- someone outside Disney Co. -- moving forward and inspire engineers out there. We have seen how Disney higher ups, directors and writers treat women of color and even white caucasian. Definitely a new writer and director outside of Disney. Or ask the now owner of the script to cooperate with writing and he earns his share $ once the movie premieres and begins earning. If you have not seen Humans (2015) it explores some similarities. Thanks for replying! 😀
@@hameley12 well thats the problem -- he doesn't own the script, Disney does. At least there was some recognition of discrimination, which the scriptwriter would understand as a Hispanic Jewish man who has daughters. He's a very empathetic guy, which is interesting bc he likes to explore dark, dystopian science fiction that has even more established layers of discrimination in his writings (check out "Unwound" or "Dry" both by Neal Shusterman. Amazing books!) These stories have far fewer restrictions bc it's not for Disney Channel. I think you can get a better grasp on the potential of Pixel Perfect by reading some of his books
@@PBthesquirrel Thanks for the recommendation I will check out these books ☺ I have read Full Tilt years and years ago... I will see if I still have the book. And yes, Disney does that quite often. i was really kind of touched by the interactions between loretta and sam. i've had depression as long as i can remember, so i thought sam's feelings of inadequacy and loretta's inability to feel were really relatable. but loretta's gleeful backflips and pirouettes to a song about being unnoticed by a boy were hilarious, it was very kenya michaels dancing to you make me feel like a natural woman in season 4 of drag race
This could’ve been used to have a mature conversation about like gender and teach children about how men wanting to have “ownership” (ie “my girl”) is kind of weird and fucked up, and have the hologram have an arc where she stands up for herself- and is like “HEY IM NOBODYS PROPERTY- I have feelings!” Which is why she had all those emotions about rain, to help push her towards that arc. But yeah whatever, your right Disney.
I dressed up as Josie (from Josie and the Pussycats) a LOT as a kid. so when this movie came out, did I fully believe I was Loretta Modern for an entire 2 weeks? Yes yes I did.

Watching this movie as a child resulted in me having periodic dreams of the inside her coma brain scene, but slightly altered, for YEARS. Idk why but this movie haunted my childhood brain.
Disney didn't make Loretta's story about how the industry objectifies artists vs artists having real feelings because that would be too self aware and close to home for Disney
i related so hard to Sam as a teen. I was bffs with a guy who never loved me so it was just impossible not to feel her pain, also yes she was a good actress.
It'd be interesting to see a movie where Loretta realizes the flaws in her initial programming and in her programmer. Like becoming possessive and rude for seemingly no reason towards other women. Or fawning over a guy who only sees her as an object with no agency of her own. Then she tries to figure out who she is on her own. (Also, have Sam find someone actually worth being with)
Loretta understanding that being programmed by a guy is not great and she befriends Sam more as they both learn about themselves and start to find value inside while dumping Roscoe
@@MistySophie Like, the scene where Sam finds Roscoe's creepy "perfect girl" catalogue and finds her photos with all those shitty remarks on them should've been the end of their relationship. Imagine a scene where Loretta is shown those files and realizes that Roscoe has an extremely reductive view on women, and that she was created from a place of deep-seated misogyny. As she and Sam grow closer, Roscoe grows more insecure and jealous, to the point of turning her off when she doesn't want to be around him- Even though he made a HUGE point to his dad about warning her before doing that (but not about _asking_ her first, curious). So Sam has to hatch a plan to free her from Roscoe once and for all . I just realized that this became DCOM Ex-Machina XD

I feel like there's a lot of room for interesting concepts here. With how we know real life pop stars are treated by their handlers this would have made a nice metaphor in the movie with how they would treat a hologram simulation, giving her absolutely no agency, treating her as a means to only make money etc except the highlight here being that where a real teen star ages rebels or their life is sadly cut short, A hologram image of a woman lives on indefinitely etc etc
Those are great concepts but Disney IS the main perpetrator of this type of behavior so I doubt they would ever purposefully bring attention to it. Especially not in 2004 when they were still doing exactly that to Britney and Lindsay Lohan.

@@Shamazya right, combo that with the thought of "what happens if I catch a hologram" and someone had to have tried
Ricky/Raviv Ullman was my BIGGEST crush as a kid. I was fully envisioning our life together
@@washedblue interesting!
@@washedblue Honestly even as a kid I thought the character wasn’t that great. I think they made her mediocre on purpose to not give actual kids a complex
She only knows how to vogue!

We’ve been doing nothing BUT drinking!” (referring to his soda backpack) then the officer gives them several tickets and the mom is like “Wow these are really expensive, thank you!” Then she turns to the dad and is like “Honey, these tickets are a thousand dollars each! "Samantha, not Samara! You stay right the fuck over there..."
Gold. All of the gold.
But like I said before, wayy too much to ask of a DCOM lol
I actually know the writer of Pixel Perfect -- he went to high school and college with my mom and they are super close friends to this day.
Amazing books!)
These stories have far fewer restrictions bc it's not for Disney Channel.
No matter what year, message or characters, they can make their team alienated and excluded, and the actors too. Please check out a few interviews of Allyson Stoner, Raven Simone and Jenette McCurdy. Take care of yourself and keep on reading.

i related so hard to Sam as a teen.
So Sam has to hatch a plan to free her from Roscoe once and for all

Such a great point. This resonates with me
well i'm eighteen and currently losing all of my friends, and i can tell you one thing : plenty of adults promised me that my friends would get better with time, but that as i got older, i'd never manage to make new friends - so i've been die-hardedly sticking with those i already had in case it never got any better, but obviously it's fallen apart, and i realize now that "i'd rather be friendless that surrounded by dodgy folks" was an okay way of thinking after all. but when you don't have a third eye to look into the future, you're convinced that this is your last chance to find friendship. even though they treat you like absolute shit.
As a thirtysomething, you all are unfortunately sort of right. If you're not an extrovert or don't have kids, adulthood can be very lonesome. Taking breaks from singing perfect by simple plan by pretending I was performing all the pixel perfect songs for a boyfriend that did not exist, fake crying included... I asked for a guitar for my birthday because of this 🤦🏻♀️
Hahaha im so glad im not the only one who fake preformed songs for fake guys in the audience 🤦🏻♀️ i thought i looked so cool
did you get the guitar? 🤠
Lmao not this movie but Read it and Weep made me desperately want a flip laptop like she had so I could write AND doodle
DCOMs really gave us our personalities huh 😅
Do “Model Behavior” and “Wish Upon the Star” next
OMG, Model Behavior! Loved that one as a kid.
Wish upon a star was my mom’s favorite movie. I still vividly remember the scene where the sister dressed up as a toned down dominatrix.
@@nootnewt9323 it's free on TH-cam if you wanna watch it!
Ppl need to fukkin learn to say CAN YOU, MAY YOU AND PLEASE
Would you ever consider reviewing The Other Me? It’s that one DCOM where the kid clones himself and then everyone likes the clone better
i was obsesssed with this one, he had his own bathroom!
@@NickDiRamioTV yesss!! I saw someone mention Step Sister from Planet Weird also. Would love to see that one.
I don’t think I ever seen that hmm sounds interesting
You guyssss I has forgotten about all of these !
That was my absolute fav!!
I distinctly remember the eating scenes with the dad and was like “is this how rich people eat?” Lol
no but I had such a huge crush on roscoe as a kid and this explains so much about my taste in men
Raviv was my KING when I was 15. I kept wishing he'd do more movies but looking back now I'm probably glad he didn't. Phil Diffy was all I needed
The dad can't think of any commercial applications for holograms?
Has this man ever heard of Star Trek? You know, the franchise that has whole episodes dedicated to adventures inside virtual environments _made by holograms?_
Man, if only they see what has been done with VR nowadays...
I love the Avril Lavigne lounge. Every house, nay, home, needs one.
