Family Matters In Doctor Who | Video Essay (Kinda)

- In today's video, I talk about one of my favorite aspects of the current iteration of Doctor Who, which is the inclusion of family. I also talk about how it connects us to the shows universe, reflects society, and reflects us. This is my first 'video essay' so I'm a bit shy about it... but I have some other fun stuff in the works! I also didn't use too many clips, sorry. I'm just aware of how those r usually handled.

Apologies for any editing issues/subtitling issues. This has been in the works for about 2 months I just haven't had motivation to edit and then other projects kept stealing my attention away. Also sorry if I seem awkward this is like my second time using a script.
What I find the most interesting is how modern who has often presented the lack of the typical nuclear family until the Chibnall era. Some of that’s definitely due to RTD’s origins in soap opera as a writer and Moffat kind of moving away from that. I personally am a bit mixed about companion’s family being a presence, mainly because I kind of want Who more away from modern day Earth as a settingx
Yeah that makes sense I mentioned in another comment that it could sometimes be a little too grounding since it’s a sci to show.

Wierd time to upload lol. Personally I think the rtd era overused the family trope. But it os defo what turned dw into a proper drama
In my defense I uploaded before stuff really “went down” and this videos been in my drafts for like two months now so I wanted to get it out before I start working on the next one. And yeah I get your point some could argue it’s a little too grounding to earth since Doctor who is a sci fi show
@@ProtagonistIvy this drama introduced me to your content so, yenno, look on tbe bright side. On a random note, I'd really like to see a companion doctor trio where the 2 companions are polar opposite best friends, a more wacky nieve character, and a more confident down to earth one, representing the 2 halves of the audiance, witha more competent, layer back, ajd adult doctor. Which I'd a dynamic we haven't seen before since the show so often focuses on how a doctor and the main female companion interact. Or havee the 2 companions be romantic to eachother. But having that more family like "a dad/mum taking his kids to see the universe" dynamic between the characters is defo something I'd be jntrested I'm, and I think could work, since that's sort of what 8 has been doing since dark eyes.
@@ProtagonistIvy second note: there's actually not a single rtd episode that isn't either earth focused, or focused on the future of humanity. Like, zero stories set on an unrelated alien planet
