How To Sing Here I Go Again - David Coverdale - Whitesnake

- In this video we study the mechanics and the musicality in doing a start-to-finish takedown on singing HERE I GO AGAIN by David Coverdale of Whitesnake! Let's ROCK!
How To Sing Here I Go Again - David Coverdale - Whitesnake
I remember in the 80s "When Dinosaurs Ruled The World!" You know...
giant guitar driven arena rock bands like Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Dio, Ozzy, Def Leppard, Guns N’ Roses, Queen, Aerosmith , AC/DC, Journey, Foreigner, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Survivor, KISS, Rush, Loverboy, Toto and so so many more, literally ruled the the airwaves.
(and I'm not even listing bands like Heart, Pat Benatar, Bryan Adams, Triumph or artists in the pop spectrum such as Prince, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, U2, Genesis, George Michael, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, Hall & Oates and oh so many more).
Now, at the top of that heap was Whitesnake.
I had always been a Whitesnake fan. But I was more a fan of Whitesnake's older material that was more three-piece guitar rock ala Montrose, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy and so on.
So when "Here I Go Again" first came out I had mixed emotions about the song. (this was especially true for "Is This Love" as well).
And I remembered there were two versions of the song. A rock album version and a radio version that was cut down and a lot of keyboards that were added.
At first I had felt that Whitesnake had "sold out" for radio airplay but the more I listened to the song the more I liked the lush keyboards complementing the guitars rather than overpowering them.
(yes I was a bit of a core guitar driven rock snob).
The more I listened to the album including other songs like "Still Of The Night", I realized that "Here I Go Again" was the perfect radio crossover to get the general public to like Whitesnake like I had liked Whitesnake.
I had never imagined that all of these years later, being so influenced by David Coverdale, that I would be teaching and sharing with others what was sort of the soundtrack of my life.
When I look back over the short list of bands that I mentioned, and compare them with today's music, I realize honestly how far music has fallen.
I promise, I am not one to live in the past and I'm sure the same could be said about 70s or 80s rock as previous generations reminisce about Motown, Doo-Wop, or even Big Band. But there truly is a huge gaping hole in the virtuosity, the songwriting, the organic nature of real instruments, autotune, sampled instruments and so on that we are now literally living in a world of AI music. (kinda like being on the USS Enterprise eating replicated food 24/7 longing to get to a planet that has real food).
My goal is inspiring people towards greatness and creating the best art possible starting with the voice.
I hope that you are as inspired by this song and band as I have been, and the information I present.

The best👑👑
Bravo Ken and thanks✌
Rock on🤘
Great job here Ken. David Coverdale is one of my all time favorites and this was one great teaching experience!!
Great video! RIP Tawny (1961-2021)
You tied your teaching method in beautifully with that song. I bought your dvd in 2012 and constantly reference it , along with the warm ups 👍
Wonderful!
Smiled the whole way through this, Amazing! One of the best songs ever.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I really enjoy the way you break down a song and deconstruct the vocals. I have learned immeasurable techniques to improve my voice from just watching your videos. There are very few if any voice teachers who will actually sing, show and explain the techniques with the precision and quality that you do. I would like to know why many times when I sing during the day while working, my voice tends to sound flat and very pitchy, but when I have musical accompaniment (piano, guitar, recorded music) playing, my voice sounds much richer and fuller in tone with no pitchiness or flat notes? It seems, I have difficulty finding the correct note or pitch to start at, if singing a capella around the house. I'm thinking it may be because I really don't know the music well enough. Thanks for all you do.
MR KEN YOU ARE AMAZING SINGER YOUR MUSIC SINGERS ETC MAKES ME SO, SO HAPPY AND I LOVE YOU SO MUCH ..I PLAY THIS SONG EVERYDAY .YOU ROCK..
I just turned the radio on, listening to your video, guess what song comes on? Swear to god lol. Your voice Ken is so amazing.
I love David coverdale that guy rocks awesome singing demonstrations Ken you rock at singing like him well done loving the demonstrations man awesome singing great job buddy 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Rock on Cade!
Great job, man. You are a master. David can't sing like that anymore since the first 90's
Another great one from the true vocal coach. Priceless!
I always thought your song Borderline was so Whitesnakeish. Love that song
Phenomenal!! Love this lesson!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love where you went with this. Now I'm gonna sing it a number of times, your vids are awesome.
Awesome! Thank you!
The "go! oh!" part is an area where I am sometimes in danger of cracking. I got 'the sickness' and after that had troubles with my voice for a while. after that notes started cracking. I've fully recovered but I'm still nervous when it comes to the part and I'm probably shying away and hitting it a bit softer then it should be hit for fear of my voice cracking.. You are hitting it spot on... I sing this tomorrow night.. thanks for the tips!!
Wow great Ken! I think I heard a glass break with those high notes 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Another great video by Ken .
I think David Coverdale killed his voice for rock and roll...but dang he is gonna always be one of my favorite rock singers.
Always loved your videos Ken! This is an amazing breakdown, I hope someday I can work with you! Keep up the good work!
Hey Ken, I think Tawny Kitain passed away a few months back. I still remember when the music video was released. Love your cover btw! Damn awesome buddy!
Amazing song and amazing cover as well. I really feel like you captured the spirit of David Coverdale, while stile mantaining the great Ken Tamplin sound in the song. Hats of to you Ken, you are such a great teacher and singer as well. :)
Awesome analysis and demonstration as always! You definitely have a great sound of your own as well as being able to nail David Coverdale’s voice. Whitesnake has always been one of my favorites! Thanks again Ken! God Bless!
Much appreciated!
That was amazing and very informative. 🤩🤩🤩
Fabulous Ken!
Stumbled onto this channel. I love 80s music and I enjoy Ken's voice and information. I also love the Phantom of the Opera, I'd love to see Ken do a video on the songs of that play! (Lol)
I love your method. I was a professional singer as kid in the 60s in a group called Sugar & Spice. I remember my little mirror for my mouth movements & to watch my breathing. It was so technical. BTW. I'm glad David is retiring. His live shows were such a disappointment. Trying to hit those high notes & screams. But we're all getting up there, right? Thanks for this video. I enjoyed it.
Ken, that was very helpful. Working on some Kansas songs, (even though I can't get the band to play them..lol!) Boy, there's a tune called "Journey From Mariabronn." That is one challenging song. Ever play around with that one? The section where he dances on those A4s and Bs? I Iowered it a half step. Been on it for months.
Your version is spot on. I love all the Coverdale songs you've done. This was a great one!
Now this is something I can hang my hat on. Thx.
Your voice is similar to him, well from my view. Beautiful and informative vocal analysis 👏
I love the way you sang this tunes.
Great 👍
Thanks a lot 😊
It's Great!!! Excellent!!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
It seems to be "reached" easily on an acceptable level almost for everyone at first, but as you are showing, the devil is in the details. Another great video.
Sounds great
Wow! Here I go again...👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for opening the secret of David coverdale, Ken.
absolutely love this song, and dude you did it justice
Thank you!
Excellent Ken, great vocalist!
Thanks brother..
Glad you enjoyed it
@@kentamplin love your channel!
@@kentamplin 👍👍
These other coaches never actually sing any songs. It's relatively easy to eek out a line or two, that is not an example. It's another thing altogether to actually grade the quality of the voice on not only an entire song, but multiple songs in many styles with many students demonstrating themselves. This is the only true way to know if a method is actually working or not.
Love your attention to detail man

Hey Ken great work! But where is your Jaguar with your wife on the hood?😁🤘. And we gotta thank Bernie Marsden too. Lots of Love and Rock on!
Great vid. Loved it
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ken,
SadisticStang said, "Just goes to show how powerful Coverdale was". Which begs the question, what came first? The chicken or the egg? ;)
Great performance, Ken. You make power and control look easy.
My question is... how can I develope my flageolet voice? Are there any muscular exercises besides singing and trying? How is related to inhale fonation?
Hell yeah 🤘🏾🔥
Iconic song
Hey Ken! Great vid. Always liked David's voice. Yours isn't bad either. Lol! Just kidding. You kill it! 😎
What a great job … sounds great bro 😎 love these lesson..
I have a request.. I’ve been learning to sing fooling yourself.. Styx
It’s a tough one ,I surely can use your help on this if possible thx 🙏🏻
KTVA…. Turnitup peace ✌🏻
Great suggestion!
Good job as usual. Just for the record, guitar solo is Adrian Vandenberg, not already in the band at the time, but as guest guitarist on 1987 only for the song Here I Go Again. Not important for the purpose of the video, by the way...
There goes my teacher only you excellent good job
Thanks!
Here is a crazy request……
How about analyzing ABBA?
Esp Agnetha, she seemed like a good vocalist and they did write some out of the box music
I have.
The best....
Good day Mr. Tamplin. It'd be very educational 4me if u could tell me why people like Steven Tyler can sing in their golden years as opposed to David Coverdale or Don Dokken? Also, is Sammy Hagar one of your students? His voice is so fab for his age. As a vocal student, will your courses teach me how to have a strong voice at an old age? Thanks Ken.
Sam is not my student. If you want to sing in your later years you must learn correct technique.
Fab again Ken :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hello Ken, I have been wanting to ask where can I get downloads of the tracks to sing on like you are using here and other artists? Most of the stuff I see on Spotify or online is not close to the original tracks.
I Love Ken 🤘🎸🎶🎶
I wished I could learn one on one with you in person.

This is a fantastic breakdown on how he sings nice job! Question would you say Jon Bon Jovi is a a tenor and do you have any tips on how to sing like him or any videos you have done. Thanks and keep up the great work!
I have tons of videos on JBJ.
@@kentamplin awesome I will check it out!
I love the version of this song by Juan Carlos Cano The Voice of Poland :))
The one problem is that he is not polish..
Hey Ken, great job. Question: sometimes when I'm listening to Coverdale sing, i feel like I'm hearing a very subtle high harmony, on all his lines. Quite high, and very hard to pick out. Is that a technique some singers use when recording? Please do a video explaining that, if I'm right. Also, whenever I hear Chad Kroeger, before I can change the station, it seems like he's doubling his voice, in the same key. I might be able to handle his singing better without it, but it almost seems like the producer is taking one vocal track, and shifting it a few milliseconds the way Alice in Chains' producer used to do to Jerry Cantrell's guitar tracks. (To great effect). Please explain this as well, I'm real interested in studio techniques and tricks.
Cheers!
Your voice just sounds so amazing! Love your cover!
Love you, ❤️you're an amazing TH-camr and I just love your voice! 🎤#KenTube
Nelly xx :)
Thank you so much!!
@@kentamplin Your welcome ☺️ I wanted to tell you that I have a new name (that is, a name I came up with), but my name "Anelia (Nelly)" remains. My other name is Jaylee. I will probably write to Jaylee xx :) from time to time because I like that name😊
Nelly xx :)
Hi from Montreal , Canada . Are you gone a do WASP ( Blackie Lawless) vocal reaction please .
I might.
Enjoyed that Ken. I'm a high baritone like yourself. Is it possible for voices with the weight we naturally have to thin out to sing in the style of a song by Neil Young - After the Goldrush for example? Whenever I sing a Neil Young song it always seems like much more heavy weather than his version with his smaller voice. Cheers for another great video BTW 👌

I actually don't know one word your saying, but I hear you sing. But I've never had singing lessons iether.

Great Video Ken. Perhaps David had more cigarettes and alcohol as well, adding to his sound?
Please do a video on how to sing like Michael Kiske of Helloween Eagle fly free
Great suggestion!
Hey Ken, is there a reason for the slight glotal attack you do at the offset of the first few lines, instead of slowly fading out?

Hey, Ken when you get a chance can you react to Marvin Gay I heard it through the grapevine (Acappella)? Thanks. It's on TH-cam.
Rock on
Ken I'm just curious why do you do so many video's on David Coverdale.
Because many of my viewers want to know how. And I like him.
@@kentamplin Have you heard Johnny Gioeli the singer for Axel Rudi Pell way better than David Coverdale.
@@nickcannon9809 How could you possibly know what people write me about? Really dumb comment. 🏆

Could you have saved David's amazing voice?
Ef yeah.
Ken I love your singing. There’s an Australian singer who in 2013 was voted best Australian singer of all time by his peers. His name is John Farnham. I think that he has perfect pitch. I love Freddie Mercury and Pavarotti. But John Farnham has better perfect pitch than those two. I have never heard a single note from him that’s not right on There’s thousands of hours of him singing live on You Tube and they are always spot on even when running around the stage. Listen to
