    I did this with my MSI 3090 (which has a flat fin stack to mount on) a couple years ago and recommend it to anyone who wants a quieter & cooler card. 2x Noctua 140mm chromax but simply fixed with zip ties. It not only dropped gaming temps to around 65°c, it also dropped the peak memory temps on the back of the card a good 13°c. Probably because it's blowing so much air in/around the metal backplate also.
    I'm so used to how quiet it is it will be hard to have a GPU without this mod in future!

      I can imagine! You use 3 or 2 fans?

      @@attepatte8485 2 x 140mm. Covers the entire 3090 cooler length and overhangs the top quite a bit.

    Takes me back around 10 years ago when my 7970 Ghz edition fan died and I ended up doing basically the same thing with some electrical tape
    It didn't look that clean but it sure worked a lot better than the original fans

      Same! The good ol' deshroud mod. I had an HD 7970 Ghz edition and an R9 280X that I did this too and made the world of difference. Quieter and cooler. I thought about doing this mod to a very hot RTX 3080 I have but decided with the ease and availability of water cooling now, I went that route instead and built a custom loop. But I'm probably going to do this to a blower style 2080 ti I have that needs some cool love. Thanks for the reminder of frustrating but good times. xD

      @@GunmetalG Going with water cooling on the 30XX or 40XX series is certainly a good idea, modern GPU are just way too hot and those mods can certainly reduce noise but usually makes the card run hotter compared to 10 years ago when they used much smaller and weaker fans
      ofc it still has use case, especially if you plan to undervolt your GPU
      On the other end your 2080ti should run much cooler once deshrouded

      @@main_rouge or do this mod and take off the backplate too. Temps will drop by a lot if you can get all that heat out of your case. An exhaust hole is best, but most have glass panel there.

    Very nice, going to try this with thermal take tough fans pro

    I honestly think you had the superior fans already installed there. Did you notice any kinda cooling performance increase?

  • @kalamatagames2631
    @kalamatagames2631 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    this change works at any pc cooling system even aio change the stock fans with 40 cfm to any fan with 70 cfm or more it drops the temperatur about 10 degrees

    Like - this is more quieter and silence then stock cooler`s !

  • @fricktion01
    @fricktion01 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    how's the performance compared to the 120mm? i imagine it's quieter since the fans don't spin as fast to reach the same noise level but not as thermally effective since the nf-a12-x25 has really good static pressure.

    • @TheSolidlad
      @TheSolidlad 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      equal 140mm fans would be quieter... but they aren't equal
      the NF-A14s are actually pretty subpar fans nowadays, so the 12x25s most likely beat them in every way
      search on yt:
      nfa14 eiglow & 12x25 eiglow for a soundtest on each by the same guy

    • @maozedowner5915
      @maozedowner5915 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@TheSolidlad 140mm Noctua fans are not that good compared to other offerings. That's true
      However, another factor is that the 140mm fans here blows a lot of air into nowhere. Areas that are not covered by the heat sink fins don't cool the card at all. It even allows fan area that covers the fins to escape out the side since that's the lowest resistance path for fluid to travel.
      Also, 140mm fans has lower static pressure compared to 120mm fans.
      I think this 120 to 140 mod will hurt the performance drastically.

    Thats cool, would probably need an upgrade like this for my rtx 3060, one fans bearings are broken and it makes a loud noise whenever it spins up. I have an "ASUS GeForce RTX 3060 12GB DUAL OC V2" the cooling on the card kinda sucks, would need some mod to cool the card better.

    Bottom fans are blocking hot air, i shouldn't be intake, as the hot air collides from the gpu 2:34

    Hello. I have 2x Artic 120 mm standard 1500 rpm PWM fans connected to my graphics card Msi AMD Radeon Rx 480. And exactly the way the original fans were connected, i.e. 4 pins and 3 pins. Only one of the two fans gives the RPM level signal. Both have same colors and I thnink wire colors is standard for these 4 colors. But now the automatic fan control no longer works. By default the fans run at 100% all the time even though they are silent fans and should not run without load. In Afterburner I can switch from automatic to manual and control it between 25% and 100% and manual control works! And the measurement diagram also shows me 900 - 1500 RPM. It looks like the card can carry the load of the bigger fans running them at 100%, no problem. But somehow the automatic mode fan control no longer works and I can't understand why ?
    I see 2 options:
    1) During the driver installation you will notice that the fans are being tested. It could possibly be that the installation detects an error because the fans do not spin up to 2000 or 3000 rpm like the original fans. And the installation then sets the automatic mode to permanent 100% fan speed.
    2) You have to crack the firmware of the card and readjust the fan control of the firmware?
    I guess it can only be the first though. That means there's nothing you can do except use fans with the same RPM. That no error and bad setting occurs ?
    It's not a problem in itself. Since you can start Msi with Startup with 25% fan. And the fans aren't loud at 900 RPM. And before you start a game, set the fans to 100% with Afterburner. and after playing again to 25% manually. However, an automatic is better.

    Furmark performance aren't even representative for actual 100% load performance in games. It will perform even better under normal 100% load gaming.

    nice mod. but why on a single fan header, there are 2 more available

    • @compwiz00
      @compwiz00 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That is how the fans are connected stock. I don't know this particular card, but my GTX 1080 has more headers that look like the fan header but don't provide any fan power or control.
