How To Check The Balance Of Your Dice | DIY Easy Trick

  • A quick video on the DIY salt-water dice balance test. It's super easy, super fast and you can tell which dice are fair to use in your next dungeons and dragons or pathfinder game!
    I used chessex dice when testing the weight, balance and spin of these dice. The clear dice seem to be the most FAIR dice to use, while the solid or swirly colored dice seem to not be 100% fair.
    Dice like the ones shown are typically used in Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder or an infinite number of other tabletop games and RPGs.
    If you want to learn how to make your own dice like I did in the video above, check out my playlist that shows how I made both the Gold Dice and the Skittles dice here!: • How to Make Your Own D...
    If you like what you saw, gimme a like! Or even better, subscribe for some more content on DIYs RPGS and other nerdy crap.

    I used to have a secret designated "DMing dice" It rolled a lot of 1s. My players in that game were dumber than a box of rocks, often drunk, and made horribly inefficient characters (we were just there for the fun and laughs) so one of the ways I ensured they weren't constantly rerolling characters was to use the dunce die.

    Of those sets, I knew I had bad 'luck' and dumped them all and I like aesthetically pleasing completes sets so had to replace a lot of dice. Recently I bought two sets of Halfsies brand dice (that's 2d20, and 4d6, as well as the rest of the dice) and have been super pleased with them. Ya know, I recently designed and built my own board game. Made a 3D version, diorama-style, and it's hella lit IMO. Only issue is I needed dice. So I found a pack of 30 dice at a dollar store...mistake 1. They are so poorly balanced, I never realised balance was an issue until this day. Then I bought loose dice at $2 a piece, thinking they'd be much more efficient. Incorrect; still a waste of money. I ended up using my Risk dice instead and just swapping out every time we play, because I'm not spending an absurd amount of money on something as basic as dice.
    This video would have greatly helped me explain to my peers why I thought my first game with the cheap dice was accidentally rigged, and not me complaining about losing my first game of my own board game haha

    If it's cloudy it means that you still have undissolved salt, so adding more salt will not increase the concentration and density of the salt water. If you add excess salt and give it a little time you will form a saturated solution with maximum density. If you want more density, you need to increase the temperature to dissolve more salt, or use a different material.

    My favorite dice are the better quality (but admittedly less pretty) Chessex opaque dice.
    Instead of the lighter acrylic or epoxy resin used in a lot ot RPG dice, Chessex opaques are made of some sort of urea or phenolic resin (similar to Bakelite).
    This gives the dice a nice heavy feel, and a satisfying 'clack' sound when they hit each other, but it also means they are too heavy to float in salt water.
    Apparently you can use Epsom salts instead of table salt to get these dice to float, but I haven't gotten around to trying it yet.

  • @Brashnir
    @Brashnir 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Another common issue with dice, other than weight distribution, is dimensions. You should also measure your dice with calipers to ensure that no one diameter is significantly higher or lower than the others. an egg-shaped die will strongly tend to land along the widest horizontal axis.

      @MrGWillickers 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This and sharp edges (not round) are actually 100% more important than tiny imperfections in weight. You're not rolling your dice in salt water after all.

  • @robinwang6399
    @robinwang6399 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    This is assuming the center of buoyancy in in the center of the dice, if the center of mass is in the center but center of buoyancy isn’t, then the test will still result in false alarms.

    • @Rybonator
      @Rybonator  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fair enough, it does make that assumption :) That's why I try and adjust the salt content of the water, but yeah it can give off false alarms. The TRUE way to check it is to troll 10,000+ times on each one, but even then it could lead to false conclusions.

    • @robinwang6399
      @robinwang6399 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rybonator you could try rolling it down a slope and use a slow motion camera to film the entire thing, if the centre of mass is off, it will have a higher moment of inertia (via parallel axis theorem) therefore resist rotation, so as long as you are using D20 or higher numbers, and as long as your dice is the same size and mass, the difference in angular velocity of the dice captured by the slow motion camera will tell you if it’s a good dice.

      Thank you, I was looking for someone to point out the difference in buoyancy and mass. Just because dice float differently doesnt mean they will roll in a particular manner. Im not saying its impossible, but floating has different physics than rolling.

      Typical table salt is Sodium-Chloride (NaCl). Doctor's used to tell patients with high blood pressure to reduce sodium intake and the most common switch was to use Potassium-Chloride (KCl), another form of salt, instead for salting food.
      Morton's "lite salt" is probably a 50/50 mixture of NaCl and KCl.
      Nowadays doctor's don't generally tell patients to reduce sodium intake for blood pressure (but may on depending on a patient's specific situation) but people that want to reduce sodium intake for other reasons can easily find KCl alternatives to NaCl in grocery stores.

Using sugar to nake a thick syrup will let any die roll around to it's heart's content until it feels comfortable. My conclusion? Whenever you roll dice make sure something stops the rolling soon. Letting it tumble for too long will make it more likely to settle by its own weight.

      It was my understanding that The dead sea has such a high salinity specifically because it has other types of salts in it which allows it to have more "saltiness" than it could have with sodium based salts. Specifically, magnesium based salts, which includes Epsom salt, make a big difference in getting past the traditional saturation point.
      Regarding the scenario I was referring to in the original comment, the cup I used literally could not dissolve enough salt, no matter what I did, how much I stirred (even used a whisking machine), or the temp of the water. Wound up with a pile of salt at the bottom of the cup that raised the dice halfway up the cup.
      Used Epson salt in the same cup and worked like a charm without any of the crazy shenanigans I tried before.

    I've tried this at home once and it worked just like in the video. The thing is I'm not entirely convinced that the slight unbalances that can be perceived by this method actually do translate into consistent differences when you roll the dice. If a specific unbalanced die deviates only slightly from the expected outcomes, I don't see a problem. I'm also not sure if there's something that could cause the die to be inconsistent that would not be revealed by this method, though I doubt it. I think we should find some better way of testing and analyzing that.

      It is supposed to mimic the balance machines that casinos use in their dice balance testing. However you are totally right. Most of the time this may equate to a .1% difference, which in the grand scheme of things. Who cares! :)

      Honestly it changes things in a super minuscule amount, like from a 5% chance per face, to like a 4.5-5% chance, so don't worry yourself too much :) BUT for some people, complete fairness makes a big difference!

      Rybonator with the way the numbers are laid out the weighting has even less of an effect as well. I believe so, anyway. I've just been pondering this lately I don't have any maths to prove it. Opposite faces do average 10.5 though which sort of evenly distributes the values on each face. If a particular face is more likely to show up, so are the adjacent faces. So if you're more likely to roll a 20, you're also more likely to roll a 2, 14 and 8 (I think this is standard)
      I'm sure there's some ever maths out there regarding this, just dumping my thoughts here
