When is the whole world going to wake up? Car dealers are Crooks, repeat car dealers are Crooks. They are not your friends.
I'm a former car salesman. I worked at a reputable new/used car dealership. They (and most new car dealerships) conduct honest business, counting on repeat customers and have a good reputation to uphold. I also very briefly worked at a typical used car lot. They were crooks. They would knowingly buy vehicles with bad engines (cheap at auction) that still ran good enough to sell to an uninformed buyer. I didn't stay there long.
Most car salesmen are normal people just trying to make a living and feed their family. I sold nearly 1,000 vehicles before changing careers and never scammed anyone. Did I offer less than stellar trade-in value sometimes? Sure, but never a rip-off. I also wouldn't sell a bad vehicle. I walked out on that used car lot after they wanted me to sell a truck with an obvious (to a person who knows cars) rod knock. "If the customer hears it and asks, tell 'em its just an exhaust leak and super cheap and easy to fix."
90% of the used car lots where I live are what I would consider to be crooks. The new/used car lots are MUCH better to do business with.
@@Brandon_Nelson92 99% of new car dealers are Crooks. They have multiple profit centers which are notorious for ripping people off. This includes the finance and insurance department where they make tons of money by ripping people off, the service department where the service advisors are paid a commission to charge old people for repairs that they don't need and that the dealerships probably don't make in many cases. Then there is the disrespectful treatment that potential car buyers receive. Dealers won't give people back their driver's licenses, and they manipulate people into deals that are rip offs. What about extended warranties? 55% of people never use an extended warranty that they have purchased. They are pure profit for the dealership. Give me a break, car dealers are absolute Crooks. What about leases? What about gap insurance? All crooked.

You've been watching too many car dealership movies. There are dealerships that do the movie clichés you describe, but they are few and few between, not 99%.
You bring up a good point about multiple profit sources though. Most people either have done their homework or bring someone knowledgeable to help them buy a car. A simple KBB lookup shows surprisingly accurate fair price estimates. Its never been easier to get a good deal buying a car. In the finance office, just say no to all the BS they are going to try to sell you. They don't force you to buy extra, overpriced warranties.
Online reviews are a good, quick and easy way to gauge what kind of dealership you are dealing with before you ever step foot on their lot. If you dont like the experience you have at a dealership, just leave. Some sales staff can get a little too pushy sometimes, but that is becoming less common as time goes on. If in doubt, bring someone that has experience with you to help make sure you don't end up making a mistake, like signing a lease, without understanding how a lease works.

Ive owned many bmws, and never got stranded or left with major issues as long as i did maintenance on time and consistently 🤷🏾♀️. That maintenance was expensive yes, but it was rare. I am glad I never experienced what others have with these beautiful machines. Now my audi q7... sigh... she a hard girl to love...

😭😭😭😂😂😂😂😂😂👌. I've contemplated buying one several times. BUT IM CONSTANTLY SEEING CRAP LIKE THIS. goodness. That's crap. If I ever buy one, I'ma buy a new one. M series.
The is the exact reason why I went for the fully electric version of the i3 instead. The fuel tank for the REX is quite complicated - it has to have all these valves because when you close it, it gets pressurized, to make sure that the petrol does not go bad even if you don't use the engine for a long time.
But that could be acceptable to some extent given you got an early i3 and it was fixed in the newer models. However, the admin, dealers being stupid, getting charged for every single thing, etc. is absolutely driving me crazy as well. Where is the "premium" service? "Premium" doesn't mean I can sit on a leather sofa drinking coffee while I wait for the car to be fixed. Premium means people have a clue about what they are doing.
How come you didn't get something with wind up windows and preferably a horse to pull it? Less to go wrong then.
Also a lot of fuel tanks have been pressurised for a very long time. Its nothing to do with fuel life - its an emissions thing. Thats why the vent goes through a carbon canister. The idea of a pressurised tank is to cut down on evaporative emissions so it only vents when filling or if tank pressure gets way too high - something that normally doesn't happen.
The problem with the i3 is that this system is usually left dormant for very long periods at a time so things stick. If the range extender is used even semi-regularly it doesn't happen.
Infact about the only real problem the i3's had on the early models was moisture getting into the electronics of the generator - something that was rectified at service for most and replaced as warranty on ones which failed.

You should always get everything in writing. Next time a dealership says something is transferable from one owner to the next or any other situation. GET IT IN WRITING and signed.
Better yet...avoid anything German or European. Even the big 3 are better choices.
They didn't fill out the paperwork to transfer the warranty, so ya it's not covered.

I had literally the same problem when I bought my i3, went to the dealership and just fixed it for free. 👌🏻 I m in Europe tho 🤔
i had the same problem. I lived with it for a while, then my car had a startup issue with an error for the 12v battery. I took to the dealer and the issue was indeed the 12v battery was dying. A new 12v battery solved my problem the fuel cap issue, and an issue with the seatbelt sensor too.
so try looking at your 12v battery!

Make sure you have had the recall done, if it has been, press and hold the fuel door release button for 3 to five seconds and see if it releases then. Also if you want to code it, I’d be happy to do that for you. It will let you use the range extender at 75% instead of 6%, which helped me drive mine from LA to Oklahoma City. It will also let you change different settings on the car like folding in the mirrors when you lock it, remote start it from the remote, and a few other cool things.

The car does not have tire pressure sensors on the wheels. It uses the speed sensors for each wheel to determine if one is spinning faster than the others, that's how it knows the tire pressure is low and why you have to drive it for it to know.

Yup. I guess they don't realize what kind of car they have. TPMS sensors are a pain. Those speed-based estimators are more affordable and fail less. You don't have to pay $200 for each tire you change to buy the tpms.... Wait you actually do pay a lot... cuz this car has weird tire 😅 sizes

In the BMW's defence, this is a 2014 BMW. The Landrover had something like 150 miles on it and was a day old. Nothing could make Landrover look good reliability wise.

My wife´s 2019 Hyundai Sonata and my 2020 Hyundai Kona both require the vechicle to be moving before you see the tire pressures. Not sure why but this may be common on other vehicles.
This is why you should avoid second hand inexpensive expensive cars.

The EV is a very simple car, we bought a certified one for $16k used and in 18 months and 13000 miles (it has 27000 now) it’s been faultless

Why? Its a 6 and a half year old car with 40k miles on it, so the gas door refuse to open because routine maintenance was neglected on the REx. It happens.
How many 2014 cars with 40k miles on them now need a repair?
A BMW is just like all cars, do the required maintenance and you may avoid costly repairs..
Of course the dealer has marked up the repair cost in order to make money.
I had the i3 with REX and had the same issue. It's actually not an issue with the gas tank not venting, but an issue with a sensor in the tank.
The REX underwent testing in Europe where gasoline has different additives / blends. In the American market, the sensors connectors corrode causing this issue. Newer versions of the part have gold-plated contacts for the US market. It *WAS* a warranty item for me even with the car at 2 years old.
I later took a rock to the AC condenser and BMW wanted $2,000 to fix. I laughed, fixed it myself, sold the stupid thing, and got a Chevy Bolt EV. The i3 is a great car at a discount, but has a lot of faults and the *EXPENSIVE* BMW service will eat away at that low price..
By the way, no 3rd party BMW shops will touch the i3. Dealer only service

I'm not a Tesla fanboy, (they also rip you off in other ways) but you gotta love the fact they don't use the stealership model. Now there's a precedent. As far as I'm concerned, Rivian will not use it either.

OMG thank you so much. I almost bought a used i3 recently. I've read the BMW forums and everyone has complimentary things to say about the cars but there are ALWAYS the same consistent issue surrounding these vehicles. I really appreciate the info and straight talk.
You guys are having a bad run of luck! Thanks for sharing the problems though. I can't believe what BMW is doing to you. It's pretty sad when Kia treats their customers better than BMW. Years ago, I bought an Optima used as the 3rd owner. A sunvisor, tire pressure sensor and oil flow control valve on the engine broke and Kia took care of it all under their transferrable 5yr/60k mile warranty. Didn't cost me a dime for the warranty or the repairs. Not even any diagnostic fees.

I don't know if this applies, but BMW recalled 2014-2017 models that have fuel venting issues.

mine did the same thing and it was the gas tank temp sensor. It is a recall!

Totally agree, don’t get the appeal of the i3 at all. It’s quirky, frumpy and just plain awkward looking! I do get the appeal of electric runabout vehicles, but for the price point vs range and practicality there’s better options available.
Ha, we leased an all electric i3 in 2015. My wife couldn't wait to get rid of it. The regenerative braking will kill you in the winter. It will literally apply the brakes when you try to coast downhill. I had to buy my wife a winter beater until the lease was up. Also started having wonky electronic issues, and interior was starting to fall apart.
This is a TSB. Mine was replaced early on as well.
It for damn sure should be covered. Call I- concierge and explain. They will call dealer in put them in there place.
And: if you run the tank dry and refill with non-ethanol gas the error clears after a few days.

If the CPO is non-transferrable, then they lied to Roman when he originally asked, because the CPO would have had to been transferred to the new owners - the dealership. If it was CPO for them, it would be CPO for Roman. If it's not CPO for Roman, then it wasn't CPO for them and they should be brought up on fraud charges.
I was looking for a small EV to use around town. BMW i3 was just removed from the list of potential buys.
I was thinking about the same thing. What else are you considering? e-golf? I was casually looking at used 2017-2018 ev pricing this weekend and they’re not as cheap as I had thought. In some cases, it’s not much more to buy them new w mfr rebates and other incentives factored in.

If you get the BEV and not the REX you will be fine. I bought the i3 BEV just knowing the REX was the weak link in this car. Can't be happier. Love the channel but these guys need to do some BMW forum checks before buying the REX. Something tells me they did but got hosed on the warranty situation.
I have a certified pre-owned 2014 i3 REX. Those are for 5 years from original date of purchase when new. Mine is now expired. After it expired my gas cap lid would not open. BMW repaired for free as this issue has a specific warranty of 100,000 miles due to the issues they’ve had with it. I’ve never had any problems with BMW warranty issues and the car itself has been awesome. The dealer doesn’t seem to know about the special warranty on this repair.

You did not hold the button on the door long enough I hold mine for 10 to 20 seconds and the tank depresses. You just pressed the button but the system needs time to depressurise.
I have a 2015 i3 an ran into the same issue the first week. I realized that the “ Ready to Refuel at 0% “ is like a countdown to when the car has depressurize its gas tank . When it hits 100% is when it allows you to open the door. If you have more than half a thank there’s a lot of pressure in the tank so it takes longer to open.

I owned one of these and loved it. Had the same fuel tank issue. Mine was ultimately totalled by the BMW dealer improperly lifting the carbon fiber frame, snapping off a lift point. They have no facility to fix the carbon fiber. Very disappointing, because it was a great car to drive daily. The warranty did not cover the dealer mess up and my insurance had to cover the damage. Run.

I owned two new i3's, the first one in 2014. I've had nothing but problems including the one you describe in this video...
You will have issues with the charging flap too (the servo engine releasing the flap had to be changed)...
You will also have issues with the drive selector, the car wouldn't go into Drive or Reverse or Neutral, so the i3 had to be transported to the dealer where they changed the whole drive selector module...
You will also have to change the main bolt holding the thermal engine, it could break (it should have been done on warranty)...
...and these are just a few of the issues I had with my 2014 i3 !
After three years, it got to a point where I was so fed up that I refused to pay my leasing fees and contacted the BMW distributor in Switzerland...They finally accepted to give me a brand new 2017 i3... Luckily I had no more issues but by that time, the TESLA 3 had done its magic on me and I said goodbye to BMW !
Now you know why I changed to a TESLA...
Long story short: GET RID OF IT AS FAST AS YOU CAN !
Everyone RIPS on Jeeps reliability but I have not seen a vid on this channel about any reliability issues on long term jeeps.
I am no fan of the big 3 BUT at least you can repair them with reasonable cost and most cities have a dealer....ditto for Japanese and Korean product. European...especially exotics...just stay away.
I had the same issue with a used 2014 REx. Thankfully, the CPO warranty covered it.
Welcome to German Engineering. It also points to the need to have a written warranty on a used car if you expect to actually use it. I always advise friends who want a used German car to only consider buying or leasing one that has a warranty from the manufacturer.
That’s how BMW’s CPO warranty works now. If it was a 1-owner car CPO’d by a dealer, there isn’t a charge for the CPO. If another owner had the car as a CPO and then you buy it, BMW charges to transfer the CPO warranty. At least, that’s how my dealer explained it when I was looking at CPO i3’s a few years ago. My ‘15 BEV was flawless and I regret getting rid of it earlier this year.
Just traded my i3 Rex after 4 years and 70K miles.
Only issue I had in all that time is the petrol flap not opening.
I bet you never needed the petrol cap in anycase so no biggie

A lot of those so-called Bumper to Bumper warranties end up not being so Bumper to Bumper as soon as you need a fix.
WOW! I stumbled across this video and your BMW was almost exactly like mine. Mine was a gold 2015 with the REX also. I did experience issues with the gas door not opening but the car never gave me any trouble codes. My experience with the BMW dealership was expensive too. The problem I had was the 12 volt battery under the hood decided to no longer charge and it created all kinds of issues with the car. I sought out to buy a new battery and then found out that I had to buy it from the dealer. I too had bought a CPO BMW and the dealership bill was ridiculous. My trip to the dealer set me back almost $500 for the battery replacement and COVERED EXTENDED WARRANTY(?) oil change. The dealer did email me a video of the repairs of the video and stated that my rear tires had to be replaced. I told him I had NEW tires sitting in my living room and asked if they can install them for me. THEY SAID NO. They only installed tires if they sold them. WTF?! Bridgestone is the ONLY MANUFACTURER of these tires. I ended up going to Discount Tire to have those installed. While the i3 was at the dealership, I asked if they can tell me the condition of the main battery pack. They said NO and stated that they would have to DROP the main battery pack and test each individual cell. This stupid car has tons of electronics onboard and they didn't have a computer that would tell them or me the condition of the battery pack? BMW FAIL!. The dealership experience was the worse thing about owing the i3. Needless to say, I traded in the BMW before the battery pack would crap out and before the car would be an expensive boat anchor. I am looking at other electric vehicles as a daily driver for commuting to work. I do miss the acceleration of the i3 though.

That car depreciated almost $40000 in 6 years. A 6 year old tesla here in Canada barely loses value.
I had a 13 Tacoma...in 7.5 years it lost only 50%....that is outstanding.
Not really. It had a $7500 federal tax credit plus state tax credits when originally sold plus probably some discount off MSRP.
So, most likely it lost well under $30K in net value after 6 years.
I think you're being a bit disingenuous regarding the value of a 6 year old Tesla in Canada. Tesla's are a depreciating asset and lose their value just like almost any other vehicle on the market. From today's autotrader.ca website I note a reasonably desirable 2015 Tesla S P85D with 99,000km on it being offered at C$64,899 down from C$69,999. The list price for this vehicle in 2015 was C$114,700. That translates into a 43% drop which is not exactly "barely losing value" but better by far than the BMW i3. The problem with Tesla's and other EV's is that the technology keeps on advancing and what was remarkable five years ago is now pretty mundane. I know this because three years ago I was seriously looking a buying a Tesla in California and importing it. At that time it would have been a Tesla S 60 which had fallen to below US$40k but with only a range 305km the only way I could have got it home would have been to have it delivered. The P85D above has a range of 407km which should at least get you from Edmonton to Calgary (327km) and close to a charger before things got serious. The same S60 I looked at three years ago is now for sale at US$25,990. For the US$40,000 I was willing to spend three years ago the choice is much better. Today, for US$28,500. I can buy a 2015 Tesla S P85D according to Autotrader.com. Yes, the mileage is much higher and you'd have to travel to see it but as long as Elon Musk keeps on ramping up production and building more Teslas and newer technology keeps being added then the older one's will suffer depreciation.
I had a similar experience with my BMW 2011 3.0 Diesel. What a JOKE! Fortunately, I negotiated for the extended warranty when I bought that piece of junk. Aside from numerous "check engine lights", every single fuel injector failed, but not at the same time. The dealer claimed that it could only replace the fuel injectors as they went "out of spec," and so I had to pay my deductible ($100) each time, and bring the piece of junk back to the dealer, who would keep it for 2 or 3 days each time, to replace the faulty injectors. The BMW dealer tried telling me that I was buying bad diesel fuel, but I countered (truthfully) that I was buying the diesel from the same tier 1 Shell Gas Station where the dealer purchased all of its diesel fuel for its vehicles (just off the hoghway from where I drove buy the BMW dealer every day). I will NEVER, EVER buy another BMW again so long as I live. The manufacturer is SATAN, and BMW had the dealer over a barrel who would not lift a finger to intervene on behalf of the customer (i.e., me). Again, thank goodness I had A "Certified Pre-Owned Warranty" (that I paid about $1,700 for!) before I bought the car from the dealer. Those things are GARBAGE (in my opinion). I have owned 3 Jaguars (1989 XJS; 2003 XK8 convertible (still own); 2014 XK Coupe (still own))-- they have all been reasonably reliable, especially the XK8 and XK.

TFL guys I would obviously see if you can save money with the CPO but if not, I would look into the mods you can do(maybe contact RichRebuilds). These things have tons of aftermarket for turning on the range extender all the time to make it hybrid, increasing power output, and extending battery range using a kit to cool using the AC system. I know an electrical engineer that did all this stuff and he says it makes it fantastic. Speed + Range + Running off Fossil = win.

You are almost right. Don't buy ANY European car, new or used. Repairs are way to expensive and the brand arrogance comes through the dealership salespeople and service departments. And BMW is the worst.
@Lassi Kinnunen That may be true, but the arrogance of the dealership and the cost of the repairs is the same if it's assembled in the US or in Stuttgart, or any other European city. European cars are much more expensive to fix and they are overly complicated.

Hey fellows, that’s the thing I’m interested in buying a used i3, but is concerned about those unexpected “BMW” costly repairs on a used BMW vehicle. It would be nice if you made your i3 a project car and do those inspections/repair cost estimates video series on things such as oil changes, break system, power steering, suspension system, electronic, etc typical that always have vehicle maintenance issues as vehicles get old regardless of whether they are EVs or ICEs vehicles. However, this would be from a used EV perspective. Keep up the good videos.

EVAP FILTER ACTUATOR OR THE CHARCOAL FILTER itself & also on some there is another valve by the intake that lets it recirculate . I have had the same issue & it won't let you fill up the tank (in bigger tank trucks mainly). Easy fix to remove those. Its caused because of over filling the tank & the charcoal getting saturated. Or the intake one not opening (actuating) to recirculate it.
The problem with the car is that "kidney grille", every car with one of those has issues.
Upsetting that so many BMW cars are nightmarish to own for long periods of time. I love their Motorcycles, many of them are fantastic performance for the value and are continually improved designs. My friend has a M235i he tuned, it's fast, great feeling stick shift, and surprisingly comfy, but some of the price tags for his OEM and aftermarket parts are insane.

No DC fast charger and a crazy lawnmower engine were a bit of a bummer. Actually went on a Factory tour in Leipzig to see it being made. It was ahead of its time, why couldn't they just given it a bigger battery. It's a piece of art on the inside, pity they never really updated it. The dealership sounds as good as the Toyota dealership here in Boulder :) This BMW story sounds like my friend who went there and paid $500 for a single run flat tire on her X3. Sounds like TFL is burning through cash with the ill fated Land Rover and now the I3!
I feel that frustration all the way over here in California... man oh man ..

Hope this helps you and other BMW i3 owners. BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2014-2017 i3 REx hybrid electric vehicles. The fuel tank vent line may rub against the ribbed wire protection sleeve of the battery positive (B+) cable, creating a hole in the vent line and causing a fuel vapor leak.
I totally understand the frustration. I had an Audi for a while, and every dealership visit was outrageous. Last straw was when an oil change - just an oil change - changed from $180 (Canadian) to $270! For oil?! Note about the PSI - some sensors need the tires to move to work.
I'm glad I went with a CPO Volt over a CPO i3... One year later, no mechanical issues, and still plenty of warranty to go!
I would have drilled a hole in gas cap and clear obd2 codes and or unhook starter battery and reset ecm(if that's possible on ev). Drive it if fault returns new gas cap cheap. You could also hollow out charcoal filter. It could be clogged causing the no vent
...but the it would fail the pressure/vacuum test when the valve is supposed to be closed...
Don't worry about the nail, those winter tires are used up. I see at most 3mm when 6mm is around the minimum for winter usage.

I bet that even if the CPO warranty was transferred, they would tell you that the fuel problem wasn't covered.... Read the microscopic print, need a microscope rental for that? $500 please 🙂

Its an emissions problem - like others have said, there is a federal requirement for a 10 yr warranty on emissions related parts - they should not pay for the fix.
THE CPO WARRANTY TRANSFER PAPERWORK, IS PROBABLY WRITTEN IN BAVARIAN AND THE DEALER WITH CHARGE $1500 TO HAVE IT CONVERTED TO ENGLISH, SO THAT THE DEALER CAN TELL YOU, THAT IT WILL COST AN EXTRA $50 FOR POSTAGE !! SMH !!
Common emission control system. Sealed gas tank with a charcoal canister and a couple of valves so that fumes are stored in the canister when the engine is not running, and when the engine is running fresh air can be drawn in thru the charcoal canister and into the engine, purging it of gasoline vapor.
Years ago my 1996 ford ranger had a failure in that system and the dealer quoted me $1500 based on the book rate, so $1600 for a BMW in 2020 doesn't seem too out of line. I had to get mine fixed after I failed the emission test.
I took it to an independent mechanic and for less than $200 he tracked down the actual problem, a failed valve, and replaced it. I passed the emission test and never went back to the dealer.
Sorry to see the troubles with the i3. Personally, I'd rather take public transportation than own a BMW and I live in LA!

I think you can hold the fuel door eject button to override it. I thought surely an electric BMW's is somewhat reliable and the service dep would be stellar but clearly it's trash... This is also why you don't top off the fuel level once it's full

@@thebagnechannel3183 never heard of asking cpo from a private seller. Dealer would need to inspect it prior to sale. If BMW didn't transfer the warranty at all I wouldn't be upset or bash then. Buy cpo from a dealer, not Joe blow

Pretty sure you have to press and hold the button for a few seconds, then it unlocks, but you still have to press the flap to open it. If its sticking, lubricate the plastic locking pin while its open and it generally fixes it. (if the flap won't unlock, try having someone 'wiggle' the fuel flap while you press and hold the unlock button) Also, If you overfill the tank on a regular basis, the vent filter gets clogged and the tank cant vent. So when filling it, once the pump stops, don't try and squeeze a few more drops in! That said, the dealerships can be a bit shifty about recognised design flaws. TPM usually flags up after a few hundred yards, same as Tesla.
We had the same issue with ours! Maybe why they have discontinued the Rex model in Europe!

They discontinued it in Europe because it couldn't met the new emissions regs and BMW didn't see much point in developing it so they just went with a larger battery.

It wasn’t stated plainly, but it sounds like they bought the car privately, not from a BMW dealer. They then went to the dealer to ask if the warranty transferred when the ownership did and were misinformed. This is as much a lesson in buying privately at is it in buying hugely depreciated luxury vehicles.

@@philarob80 I’m guessing it was a bit more casual than that. Had they gone into VIN numbers, the dealership (hopefully) would have verified the owner details and found a discrepancy.

Hi, hold the gas button in the inside for 10 seconds to reset the air pressure module to release the fuel door. On the screen it will say: 25% then 50% then it will say READY. Go outside within 2 minutes and push in the fuel door. It will then release and pop out. It will only hold 1.9 gallons of fuel..
