I grew up in Norwich in the Unthank Road area in the 70s and 80s. Really enjoyed seeing how it was.

Born and bred in Norwich and still live here. I was 20 when this video was filmed, weird to see cars driving down St Stephens and Castle meadow.. Great to see how thing used to look back in the 80s, no one with their face buried in a mobile phone too.

Even the opening shot of St. Stephen's Street - the commercial street with all the department stores / chain shops - portrays just how aesthetically raw, concrete, 'clinical' and 'dirty' it was and still is in Norwich. That's what I love about it; no frills, just a simple, humble city full of great shops and facilities, and better still full of culture / diversity, and really down-to-earth, friendly, tolerant and unpretentious ! And yes I was born & bred here.

Agree with your sentiments. I used to commute to work in Norwich. It has so much to offer. I hope when we unlock after Covid, people will come and see the city and not just the retail areas. The little coffee shops tucked away in the historic areas were my greatest pleasure with friends or just for a bit of me time #norwichafinecity ❤

@@ClaireScarrott258 Aaww, those little coffee shops, like the one in Elm Hill (I think it's still there !). I like the historic parts like Elm Hill, cathedral Close + churches, but really prefer all the raw, dirty concrete blocks like Anglia Square (paramount to my bleak urban psyche I'm afraid !). And yes, after covid I can visit my sister who still lives there (lucky her!) and enjoy the best of British urban life !

Thankyou for this trip down memory lane. I'm currently living in Australia, but Norwich is my home and always will be. I will be returning to live in Norwich permanently in the not too distant future, and can't wait to see my beautiful city again. I know it has changed over the years but I want to walk down Elm Hill again and visit the Castle museum and just enjoy being part of it. I can't wait to get back and finally be home where I belong. I LOVE NORWICH! Thanks again😁

My home city. Some of the more modern buildings now sadly gone such as the Norfolk & Norwich tower blocks, the Malthouse car park and a few others. Norwich has always been a combination of raw and industrial and quaint and historic.

For me, this ring road at the beginning IS Central Norwich ! It has everything; abundance of shops, raw concrete blocks, period building remains, and a dose of greenery to revitalize it ! Perfection of the urban landscape !

Those roof-tops you can see in the first 2 minutes ...
We got very pissed one night, so when we came out of Rizzy's (Monday night - drinks 50p) we climbed up the fire escape at the back of Sainsburys and climbed across the roofs as a 'short cut' - except the drop back down at the corner (Swifts ?) was too high so we had to go all the way back.
Looking at that pitched roof above what was the co-op - I'm not sure how we made it ... ah, those were the days.

It was a vibrant city. No Castle Mall or other indoor shopping centres like that. At the front of McDonalds (where it is now by the market) was a wonderful fountain section (outside of a large department store called C&A) that we used to play in as kids. Occasionally someone would squirt some Fairy Liquid into it creating an impromptu foam party!

  • @notmanynamesleft

Norwich has been ruined with the road systems and pedestrianisation now, many of the shop rents are unaffordable for the business owners, Chapelfield Intu is about to go bust and a large number of empty shops are visible in Castle Mall, sad considering this city was always busy in the 80's and 90's. Great footage 👍

The cityline buses!! . Great seeing film of the fine city back then, the year me and my mates could finally order a pint legally in the pubs lol. Anyone remember chaplins?

4:35 One Step Beyond / OSB in the distance there! I used to meet my mate there every Saturday morning and we would peruse the latest C64 and Amiga games. They used to have the computers set up inside playing all the latest hits such as Barbarian and The Way Of The Exploding Fist whilst all the cassette games were kept behind locked glass cabinets on the far wall. Great days.

Amazing to see the Macintosh factory and the multi story block of the old N&N hospital. Unfortately, you couldn't take a modern day comparison video from the top of the same carpark because they have erected safety fencing.
