The rectangular grille is a frost grille. They were all built with them originally but gradually most got removed bar some of the South Wales examples. The 37239 you are about to weather retained the frost grilles until withdrawn as 37332. If you do a Flickr search of 37239 or 37332 and look at the rectangular grilles under the fan, you will see where these go. Other examples are 37158, 37203, 37227, 37254 which all retained frost grilles until they were withdrawn. Since 37254 came back with Colas, it has since lost them. 37057 however, had them refit as a preserved example and still retains them on the mainline.
Railway modelling is a roller coaster Dave. Some days it is annoying and you make a cock up;next time often after a bit of thought (and less beer!) it comes together and I think your result is a great recovery. It looks great! Even the grill looks ok to me. I understand your frustration, but I don't think it requires replacement. The prototypes get a real beating over the years. Those grills won't look anywhere near pristine by the time they are end of life.
In case this helps Dave, a couple of alternatives to PVA for attaching metal to plastic: When you want an instant bond, Bostik Fix & Flash is great. It's a resin 'activated' by UV light (developed for dentistry). I use it to stick photo-etch, re-attach buffers and crew figures. It dries clear (slightly glossy) but doesn't attack the paint or plastic on a model. Also good is Gorilla Glue Clear. I use it for photo-etch loco nameplates. Again, doesn't react with the paint or plastic but you do need to wait for it to dry. Keep up the good work, cheers Geoff PS - Tamiya smoke is meant to be slightly transparent - good for building up weathering effects.
