  • This is a video tutorial on how to torque your wheels to proper manufacturer specification. If you do not torque your wheels properly or in a star pattern the lugs can walk right off the threads and subsequently the tire might fall off while in transit.
Here is a list of proper lug nut torque specs: www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...

On aluminum or magnesium wheels I like to use more than on pass in tightening the lugs. What I would typically do is torque them to 40 ft-lbs on the first pass in the star pattern and go around again at 80 ft-lbs for the second pass. For a three pass installation on magnesium wheels I'd do something like 25, 50 and 80 ft-lbs in the star pattern. For billet aluminum lug nuts I always cleans the stud threads and apply a little anti-seize compound to the threads before installation.

That's a fancy torque wrench, among the most expensive I seen online was the Snap On brand among a few others, maybe for a shop working all day doing this stuff the steep price is justified if the quality really is there but there are so many well reviewed torque wrenches for about $50.

I don’t have a torque wrench, I have been testing the newly purchased impact wrench only in untightening wheel nuts but have been tightening them by hand. I have ordered a torque stick for 120 nm but I have only tightened the nuts with a wheel brace and pipe. I’m not sure if I can hand tighten whell nuts to 120 nm or more, I’m certain I will not have damaged the nuts by hand tightening.

I changed from my winter tires to summer tires: I first tightened in a star pattern as much as I could with the wheel in the air. Lowered the car to the ground and then torqued the nuts in a star pattern to the proper value.
A few weeks later a wheel partially came off. The garage said my wheel nuts were loose. I am baffled. In the past 40 years I have always tightened the lugs nuts without using a torque wrench (prob. too tight) and never had an issue. I only started using the torque wrench several years ago.
Is that an issue with the tires on the ground and the weight of the car causing the torque wrench to incorrectly click if the wheel is not snug enough to the rotor ?
One thing I do recall, is when I removed the winter tires, one lug did seem not tightened very tight.
    I am baffled. Thanks

The nuts can loosen with the wheel’s rotation but I don’t know how long that takes. One tip I got was to re-torque your nuts some time later in case there was a positioning problem, same logic as with snow chains where you re-tighten them after driving for a few minutes.
Wheel nuts used to be left and right hand thread, I’m not sure if that’s the case now, they used to have a “L” stamped on them.

I like torquing wheels everytime i'm done with a brake job but something that has always bothered me is that because you are using what is basically a long ratchet with a torque mechanism in it it feels like you are not really tightening anything because you have so much leverage, lol, makes you wonder "is that it??" versus using a 4 way where
is a totally different feeling. BTW i know Snap On is a super duper awesome brand but i hate those square torque wrenches with that swiveling head, lol, i like my torque wrenches round.

Too many idiots at tyre stations overtighten these nuts which makes it impossible for anyone to change a flat tire in an emergency.
It can also wreck alloy wheels. The number of times I've seen teenagers at these shops let looks with air tools, and no torque setting on the impact tool.

Raul is right. Torque wrench is not a tool you just crank this video is bad info. Torque is consistent pressure until you reached desired torque where the wrench head snaps or pops and you let off. The car should never be lowered without the wheel secured by at least one lig to the hub and tightened to a minimum of 60 ft lbs. Vehicle should not be rolling back and forth while desired torque is being met. It's not a true torque.
