Legend has it that Bruce Dickinson and Ronnie James Dio conjured a daughter of Metal. They bestowed upon her the name of Brittney Slayes, and that is what she does.
Nice.. first reactionist that recognized the bass players technique..clawhammer..producing the galloping sound.. like a charge into battle. Kudos for the recognition.
A bunch of things: They're Canadian so they don't take themselves too seriously. Brittney is a gamer, a DnD player and she'll chill on reactor channels. She has even done reactions to UTA reactions. Contact them if you'd like to have Brittney do a video with you. A few suggestions: If you want to hear Brittney really channel Dio, listen to "Tonight We Ride". It's a cheesy, low budget video shot during Burning Man, but my oh my does she cut loose. "Awakening" is just a warmup tune for her. th-cam.com/video/UOvZKJlrtk8/w-d-xo.html UTA just finished a concert in Edinburgh and the band went out to a karaoke bar for a few beers. So here's Brittney after a concert and a few pops, ripping out a Queensryche song just for shits and giggles: th-cam.com/video/280DRqoGyLw/w-d-xo.html Note: phone quality video. On the subject of Tatiana and her growling, did you know that Floor Jansen, queen of the pretty metal vocals can get down and dirty like Tatiana? Fancam video, so it is what it is, but Floor with her previous band ReVamp, where she was in charge: th-cam.com/video/SNPesLFTnUg/w-d-xo.html Subscribed BTW
“Tonight We Ride” next, please!!! Love UtA! You can’t help but love their storytelling and humor. Brittney is a powerhouse. You’ll see that more in “Tonight We Ride”. She sings her ass off.
"Looks like she's going to rip someones face off" The best part of that comment is that Brittney, the singer, is actually one of the nicest most down to earth musicians.... ever.
I saw them live for the first time in 2018 and they opened with this. They really are this good live. The feeling that song gave the room made me tired once it ended. Hell of a way to open a show.
Yeah, they really hit it with that record, I loved them before but there was always an admitted little bit of intentional cheese in it, this album though they kind of threw out the cheese and it really shows, every song is just awe inspiring. Their "sequel" Abyss is comparable, so good...love their older work, I only heard of them because they're fellow Canadians though but this album just blew them into international superstardom...totally deserved it...
Of all the reaction videos I've watched of this song, you are the ONLY ONE that has actually explained the technique that the bass player us using! I have wondered what it was since the first time I saw this video! I THANK YOU FOR THAT!
If you dont know "Wintersun" its a must try "Sons of winter and Stars live Rehearsals at sonic pump studios". I promise you will be blown away! No offence but there is a crazy amount of talented metal musicians out there today it truly is never ending.
Don't worry too much about pausing, I really like hearing more in depth breakdowns of the technical side of things. You do a great job of pointing it out.
dude.. this is an awesome reaction .. love how you explain it all .. hope you continue reacting to them.. they so deserve it .. they are that damn good.. love it.. new sub!!!
Metal music is now as healthy as it was when I was growing up in the 80's. IT is also very cool that this revival is mainly do to female singers. Unleash the Archers, Nightwish, Ginjer, Arch Enemy, and Epica are currently the best in my opinion. You can't go wrong in reacting to any of those bands videos.
Oh god, every time I watch one of these UTA reacts and DIO comes up I'm so happy. Also, huge props to the bass player and his technique finally on a vid. (alos teehee to the fishing hat ;) )
I love your in depth reactions :) I 've listening this great piece of art many times, but you had opened my eyes and ears for new delighted marverlous tiny details. Thanks!
FANTASTIC reaction! Thank you! I used to listen to this song over-and-over on my 45-mile way home from work! It helped release the tension of the work-day and the tension of driving home in Florida traffic. 🤣
My Man !!!! Awesome reaction ! Myself (exact !! vitals as You as far as music goes , and age) ... am a musician as well.. and this Band, Man I Swear they bring tears of Joy to my eyes !!! I know you have other reactions to do but , may I say... Welcome to UtA... your journey has Just begun...... Can't wait to see some more !!!! Cheers !!!
Hey man, I've watched so many different reactors over the past year or two and this is the first time I've saw one of your vids. Gotta say you're one of my faves already, very insightful and you clearly know your stuff! New subscriber \m/ \m/
Oh wow, you're the first person I have seen who could identify the bassists playing style. Most people I have seen react to this are confused by his playing style and have never seen it before.
One of the best reviews I have seen. Really in depth and informative. Most reviews are just for fake freaking out... but this is a relief and what reactions should be.
If you want to hear her range, definitely react to Unleash the Archers: Tonight We Ride! Another great and under rated song of theirs is Test Your Metal 🤘😊🤘
Glad you enjoyed this! And I really enjoyed your commentary on it. You picked up on so many things that majority of reactors just pass over. I wasn't comparing Tatiana to Brittney, was just saying they're both powerful in their own right. Like you said, they both sing in totally different styles. And once you get around to Nightwish, Floor Jansen sings in a totally different style than them as well. Those 3 woman are my favourite female vocalists in metal right now. Tatiana is a top core metal singer. Brittney is a top power metal singer. And Floor is a top symphonic metal singer. It wouldn't be right to compare them. Not everyone will agree with me, and I don't expect them to, it's my opinion haha. Here's a vague breakdown to give you a bit of context behind this songs lyrics and the album it's from - Apex(2017). This is a concept album telling a story track by track about an Immortal being. This is the opening song on the album. It is sung from the Immortals perspective(not all the tracks are), about being awoken in his mountain hollow from a 1000 year sleep. As a covenant of birth, the immortal must do the bidding of whoever awakens him. As the tracks progress, you find out that The Matriarch(which is played by the male vocalist in this song Awakening) was the one to awaken him. She wants him to find her four sons, so she can kill them and perform a blood ritual to gain immortality for herself(pretty dark haha), and his journey to find them. Each son has their own song about them on the album. The closing song Apex, is about the immortal going back to sleep in his mountain and it is a phenomenally written song. Their new album which came out in August, is a continuation of this story, and the immortal has awoken on a spaceship confused as hell wondering where tf his mountain is lol from the single Abyss. I won't go into the rest of the album lol To hear Brittney really flex her vocals, check out a song from their 2015 album (not part of the story i mentioned above) called Tonight We Ride.
First off, phenomenal breakdown of the song. Loved all the detailed analysis you provided and I personally love the pausing to show your music knowledge. If you are going to react to more songs by them, please don’t do what every other reactor does and jump around their catalog. It is a treat to start back in 2011 and work the way through their catalog to see how they have progressed as musicians and songwriters since then. 1. Dawn of Ages (2011) 1st video ever 2. General of the Dark Army (2011) 3. Dreamcrusher (2015) Live in Montreal 4. Tonight We Ride (2015) 5. Test your Metal (2015) 6. Awakening (2017) (reviewed) 7. Cleanse the Bloodlines (2017) 8. The Coward’s Way (2017) Lyric video 9. False Walls (2017) Lyric video 10. Earth and Ashes (2017) lyric video 11. Apex (2017) lyric video 12. Abyss (2020) 13. Through Stars (2020) 14. Legacy (2020) 15. Soul bound (2020) 16. Faster Than Light (2020) 17. The Wind That Shapes the Land (2020) Lyric video. Hope this list helps and keep up the great reactions and analysis!!!!
The drummer is using a heel-toe technique to play that gallop and he's just a beast. Britney is even really showcased on this song, which is insane if you think about it. The other insane thing about this is it's the album opener. Imagine putting it on to listen and being hit upside the head with this as the first track. The whole Apex album, a concept album with a story running through it, and Abyss, its sequel, are on this level of quality. As for them playing D&D, you're right. In fact, Britney Hayes, who wrote the story and lyrics to the aforementioned albums has a series of videos on her channel where she goes over the story song by song. In those videos, she has her library in the background and you can see she has some of the best fantasy and sci-fi there.
Dude, I love your analysis of UtA's musicianship! This type of reaction video, by someone who actually knows their shit unlike me, is always incredible! If you like Unleash the Archers as much as this video makes it seem you do, please please please react to The Wind That Shapes The Land soon! It doesn't have a playthrough video like Awakening, but to me it feels like an incredible example of this band's skill - with instruments, with vocals, with their creative process, and composition. The song is something I can only describe as a musical journey; it's like UtA had 3 or 4 different songs they couldn't choose between for that part of the story (yes, their albums tell a story and it's also amazing) so they perfectly mashed them all together into a single masterpiece. If you hadn't already done so, I'd ask for a react to Legacy... These two seem really under-represented in the reaction video space and it makes me sad.
When I first heard them...I was like...Holy feckin' shite!!!! Iron Maiden, if they were formed today! Never even thought of Dio, but I just seriously, was Iron Maiden vibes!!!
This is my first time watching you. I would classify myself as an old school nerd as well. I've watched about 20 other reactions and none of them knew what technique the bass player was using. I thought it looked like a banjo technique . I'm glad to know I was right.
Here are some musically interesting performances. Devon Townsend - Kingdom Cradle of Filth - Nymphetamine Slipknot - The Nameless Lamb of God - Overlord Mushroomhead - We Are the Truth The tempos, vocal styles, mood, etc all change throughout these, and they will take you in new directions.
you need a metal list? I was going to list all the songs, but I'll just list a few for each band: - Sabaton - Night Witches (live), Fields of Verdun, Resist and Bite, Bismark - Powerwolf - Killers with the Cross, Demons are a Girls Best Friend, Nochnoi Dozor, Sanctified With Dynamite - Frozen Crown - Neverending - Warkings - Sparta, Gladiator - Majestica - Above the Sky - Beast in Black - Zodd The Immortal, Beast in Black, Blind and Frozen - Unleash the Archers - Abyss - DragonForce - Highway to Oblivion
As a fellow old timer, the power metal scene is filled with talented bands. Loads from Europe, several on this side of the pond. Glory hammer, brothers of metal, windrose, and I absolutely love Alestorm.
Yeah just looked it up and yeah 30 tracks and 42 stations across 14 countries its my home country band and one of the most succesful bands ever with a female lead like she is really paving the way for us.
What a great reaction, I loved your insight and breakdown. This band reminds me of Iron Maiden in a lot of ways, the syncopated guitars and the gallop beat, the epic vocals and the grooving bass. What do you think?
Great reaction. Other than some choir, Britney has no formal training in singing. She started singing in a choir when she was 8, roughly when she started playing Rugby....yep Rugby. She was a history major at University of Victoria in British Columbia. She missed singing and being around music so much she joined a world renown choir at U Vic where she was one of 4 altos. (She continued playing Rugby at U Vic as well) Being Canadian myself, these guys are amazing, but power metal bands in Canada don't get much push. SO that is why you will see her doing interviews with almost every Reactor to get UTA out there. I can't say enough about these guys. Check out their new album Abyss, and if you want a great example of how little they take themselves seriously, check out Faster than Light. Keep up the good work my friend.
My gym song is Ten Thousand Against One by Unleash the Archers. Great analysis. I definitely suggest checking out more from them. Particularly Tonight We Ride, Abyss, The Matriarch, and Ten Thousand Against One.
I don't mind all the pauses, if I want to watch someone just reacting without saying anything I can watch the video with a mirror in front of my face. I appreciate the reactors who do sometimes pause and either give their thoughts on parts or, if they have actual knowledge of the things going on, break down what is going on.
Don't ever apologize for pausing as you've got a great mind for music and it's always interesting to hear tidbits of info from someone who knows their stuff. On a sort of a tangent as it's a different metal genre, but focuses a lot on telling a story and holding an atmosphere, I'd love for you to check out Sons of Winter and Stars (Sonic Pump Studios Live) by the band Wintersun. Their first album is forever cemented in my top 3 and I've been stuck knee-deep in metal for far too long now.
This song is from Apex, which is a concept album with a very interesting story which continues on their latest album Abyss. I would suggest "Tonight We Ride", "Cleanse the Bloodlines" and "Abyss"
Just found you today! (Through Pisces, of course, 😅😜). Glad you seem to be digging in to two of my faves, Jinjer & UTA. I was hesitant with UTA at first, but now I’m practicing singing The Wind That Shapes the Land by them every day. *obsessed*. Anyway… my third favorite that I’ve been into for a few years now is Be’lakor. No cleans, just growl, from Australia. Considered “Melodic Death Metal” and I guess that’s close enough. 🤷♀️ To me, it’s like if a classical composer like Bach or something was a metalhead. Their only official videos are from the last album (Still waiting for the new one to drop, WTF guys you said around MARCH! 🥺😭) and are lyric videos, which I like cuz it’s a concept album. I suggest The Smoke Of Many Fires. Enjoying your channel, it’s nice when the reactioner is around my age, the jokes/references are comprehensible to me, lol😜.
Awesome reaction. Nerd pride 🤘 I just found UTA a few months ago and am totally hooked. They all seem like really cool down to earth people (nerds like us) and total gamers. When you said "they're playing D&D is when I hit suscribe bc you're right! My old school instinct (I'm old too, grew up on Rush too) says listen to Test Your Metal next. Some of the 'metal elite' call it cheesy but I think its just a fun song about being on tour - about knowing those moments are fleeting and just enjoying them. Shades of Iron Maiden.
The way each one of them utilize the undertone of others and shadow or ECHO note them is what makes this amazing and the bass player pulling out the I CAN DO THAT TO at the end is the best..I still pull this out to show younings how its done.......also check out FROZENCROWN
I loved your technical take on it. I noticed that your mic kept cutting out so hopefully you fix your noise gate issue so I can gain even more technical music knowledge from you in the future. My first listen to UTA was Tonight we Ride, then this one, then General of the Dark Army and now they have the whole Abyss album which Soulbound takes this to a whole new level.
I am old school metal/rock like you. I grew up on Maiden, Dio, Rush and Sabbath. I can assure you that Jinjer, Unleash the Archers, and OPETH will not dissapoint. The musicianship you crave is there and more. Now try Opeth as they are not of this Earth; listen to Ghost of Perdition, Harlequin Forest, or Deliverence.
Glad you enjoyed this track. It is great and the first track I heard from them. I have since gone through the Albums and they are great. great reaction and good info on what the musicians are doing and explaining techniques. Ok so others may have suggested what I'm about to. Wintersun : Sons of Winter and Stars live Rehearsals at sonic pump studios Epica : Consign to Oblivion live at Zenith Ayreon : The day that the world breaks down (This is a great mix of several singers and musicians) And the first track from the 9th studio prog rock album called The Source, All put together by the talented Arjen Anthony Lucassen Well worth a listen.
You seem to be one of the few who I will allow to pause a song so much, great breakdown throughout, got my sub. If I can make a suggestion, listen to Blind Guardian, don't care which one you listen to just make sure you do their live shows at Waken, worth the watch just for the crowd interaction alone. Keep up the good work
UNLEASH THE ARCHERS - THE WIND THAT SHAPES THE LAND Absolutly best song of UTA. If you like great storytelling, amazing vocals, fabolous rhytm and key changes this is the song. it will pull you in and not let go for the very long time. try it :D BTW you are awesome i like your videos very much.
So, now you have a huge amount of work to do! 😉 All that Jinjer songs,, now also Unleash the Archers, Nightwish to come.... Let me burden you up a little bit more 🙂.... Excellent musicianship and insane compositions: Also like Unleash the Archers fom around Vancouver there is a band called "Spiritbox". They also can`t make a bad song, it seems, but as you are a capable musician yourself, try "The Mara Effect"! It`s a composition of three songs and therefore 15 minutes long and every second worth it, live or in studio! 😊🤘
Do yourself a favor and watch drunk Britney slaying it in an Edinburgh Karaoke Bar after a full show with "Queen of the Reich"... it's absolutely hilarious and epic
I am probably too late, but I think anyone's first reaction video to The Warning! should be a 2 in 1 video starting with their cover of "Enter Sandman", then whatever song of their current original material. You first get blown away by how talented these 3 little girls are, killing it on Enter Sandman. Then see how much they have grown that talent with their own songs. It is just really really amazing to see that!
Great video very informative love unleash the arechers she clearly shows in all her videos how awesome she is and I recommend tonight we ride by unleash or even the all female metal group called burning witches and there song hexenhammer
2 of my favourites up til this for blow your mind stuff was Thunderhorse by Brendon Small and Through the fire and flames by Dragonforce but think this just may have taken first place if you havent heard those ones I would check those out too
Legend has it that Bruce Dickinson and Ronnie James Dio conjured a daughter of Metal. They bestowed upon her the name of Brittney Slayes, and that is what she does.
And made her Canadian ;)
MAN.... Ronnie James Dio was quite the ladies man cause he did the same thing with Janis Joplin and made Melody of Liliac.....
add in Ian Gillan and Geoff Tate

Great reaction. Love the enthusiasm and humour combined with dropping actual knowledge and making interesting observations. Keep it up!
This is my first time watching you. I would classify myself as an old school nerd as well. I've watched about 20 other reactions and none of them knew what technique the bass player was using. I thought it looked like a banjo technique . I'm glad to know I was right.
Here are some musically interesting performances.
Devon Townsend - Kingdom
Cradle of Filth - Nymphetamine
Slipknot - The Nameless
Lamb of God - Overlord
Mushroomhead - We Are the Truth
The tempos, vocal styles, mood, etc all change throughout these, and they will take you in new directions.
Brittany reminds me so much of Mia Sara back in the Farris Bueller days. Amazing band
you need a metal list? I was going to list all the songs, but I'll just list a few for each band:
- Sabaton - Night Witches (live), Fields of Verdun, Resist and Bite, Bismark
- Powerwolf - Killers with the Cross, Demons are a Girls Best Friend, Nochnoi Dozor, Sanctified With Dynamite
- Frozen Crown - Neverending
- Warkings - Sparta, Gladiator
- Majestica - Above the Sky
- Beast in Black - Zodd The Immortal, Beast in Black, Blind and Frozen
- Unleash the Archers - Abyss
- DragonForce - Highway to Oblivion
As a fellow old timer, the power metal scene is filled with talented bands. Loads from Europe, several on this side of the pond. Glory hammer, brothers of metal, windrose, and I absolutely love Alestorm.
I love the smile she does right at the end as if to say "yep nailed it. that was badass as fuck"
Test Your Metal!!!! In that song Britney shows how powerful is her voice 🤘🤘🤘🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🤘🤘🤘🤟🏼🤘🤘🤘🤘
Very much enjoyed your analysis and loved your enthusiasm. Subscribed! :)
Metal takes little bits from all genres of music, but at its core its a heavy fusion of blues and classical
These videos are more educational than music appreciation classes.
Yup,the alex lifeson reference earned you a sub
Yeah just looked it up and yeah 30 tracks and 42 stations across 14 countries its my home country band and one of the most succesful bands ever with a female lead like she is really paving the way for us.
But don't forget about how the drummer is keeping everyone on time and doing a damn good job with it.
OK THANK YOU FOR INTRODUCING THIS SONG INTO MY LIFE!! AND I LOVED YOUR EXPLANATION!! I'M STILL IN SHOCK OK BYE HAHA
Great reaction and breakdown! Keep it going!
Love your reaction! Great to hear you are going to dive into the deep end!
I love that you see he is fluttering and not heel toe. I find it incredible.
Best band I've heard in some years. As an Old school metal fan myself, I was absolutely hooked by UTA.
me too... in an instant
Most fun reaction I have seen in like 250+ reactions on other channels. SUB earned BIG TIME! D&D leads to great content for their songs I think...lol
When he is talking about the synchronized guitars at the 16 minute mark... and I am just thinking about the next two minutes!! LOL!!
It’s like the charge of the Valkyrie, hell yeah
Awesome reaction. Nerd pride 🤘 I just found UTA a few months ago and am totally hooked. They all seem like really cool down to earth people (nerds like us) and total gamers. When you said "they're playing D&D is when I hit suscribe bc you're right! My old school instinct (I'm old too, grew up on Rush too) says listen to Test Your Metal next. Some of the 'metal elite' call it cheesy but I think its just a fun song about being on tour - about knowing those moments are fleeting and just enjoying them. Shades of Iron Maiden.
The way each one of them utilize the undertone of others and shadow or ECHO note them is what makes this amazing and the bass player pulling out the I CAN DO THAT TO at the end is the best..I still pull this out to show younings how its done.......also check out FROZENCROWN
she's like Dio and Geddy Lee at the same time. EPIC
They just keep getting better too, their new album "Abyss" is insanely good...
From what vocal coaches say about Tatiana, she isn't using her vocal chords at all for the growls.
I rate the reaction to this song by the reaction to the little bass solo lick. 10/10 :D
This freaking song is EPIC!
Tremenda reaccion! Saludos de Argentina!
SOULBOUND next! Official video... you will not regret it!
"It's a cross between an angel and a banshee.... I'm going to go with banshee" so good!
thanks for showin me another wicked good band
Old school metal was awesome, and I still love it. But the new metal is so much fun, and super talented.
Wow! My mind is blown!
You're really catching a lot of details ^^
Glad you enjoyed this track. It is great and the first track I heard from them. I have since gone through the Albums and they are great.
great reaction and good info on what the musicians are doing and explaining techniques.
Ok so others may have suggested what I'm about to.
Wintersun : Sons of Winter and Stars live Rehearsals at sonic pump studios
Epica : Consign to Oblivion live at Zenith
Ayreon : The day that the world breaks down (This is a great mix of several singers and musicians) And the first track from the 9th studio prog rock album called The Source, All put together by the talented Arjen Anthony Lucassen Well worth a listen.
You seem to be one of the few who I will allow to pause a song so much, great breakdown throughout, got my sub.
If I can make a suggestion, listen to Blind Guardian, don't care which one you listen to just make sure you do their live shows at Waken, worth the watch just for the crowd interaction alone.
Keep up the good work
UNLEASH THE ARCHERS - THE WIND THAT SHAPES THE LAND
Absolutly best song of UTA. If you like great storytelling, amazing vocals, fabolous rhytm and key changes this is the song.
it will pull you in and not let go for the very long time. try it :D
BTW you are awesome i like your videos very much.
Please do Unleash the Archers "Tonight We Ride" ( the video version ). That song is awesome! :-D
oooooo YEAH
New band for me too. Brittany's vocals crush it.
"Cannons" Fire For You, Hurricane, Purple Sun.
Great Canadian band. They live in Vancouver and Victoria area - right on the ocean :) lots of fishing :)
You need to check out "Tonight We Ride". Brittney`s vocals there are phenomenal !!! That one is KILLER !!!
"I learned how to play banjo a few years back cause I got bored." That may be one of my favorite sentences ever.
Great video very informative love unleash the arechers she clearly shows in all her videos how awesome she is and I recommend tonight we ride by unleash or even the all female metal group called burning witches and there song hexenhammer
2 of my favourites up til this for blow your mind stuff was Thunderhorse by Brendon Small and Through the fire and flames by Dragonforce but think this just may have taken first place
if you havent heard those ones I would check those out too
