I also enjoyed James and agree with your review of the book. I have read Erasure and The Trees. Both of them are good books as well and I would recommend them to anyone who enjoyed Percival’s writing style.
Your entire review resonates with me 100%. Though I'd already heard that this was part of the story, the degree to which James uses the "slave filter" then instantly goes to the highest levels of intellectual discourse was destabilizing. I like your point about it possibly be a fantastical element, and if I read it again that would make more sense. Also, other characters used the slave filter and instantly switched. For me, it was a little too much being hit over the head. For me, if it had been a bit more nuanced in that aspect, I personally would have liked it better. Loved the book, and will definitely read more by Percival Everett in the future.
I was half-expecting the book was about me, but it wasn't. The title was just a coincidence. It's about someone else who had adventures. That's fine and good since it would have meant that Percival Everett was stalking me. However, I have to admit that I still think my life story is worthy of a national book award.
This has been the year of Percival Everett. I’m actually gonna start a new one right now. I wanna say it’s book 7 of his that I’ve read.
Which one was your favorite :)?

The Trees is amazing. I loved it.
Please try out Telephone by Everett, specifically the one with the isbn that ends with A.

"Finn" byClinch Also a retelling from perspective of Pap Finn. Good book, very dark.
