Running on Rail: Stansted Express

- Taking over four months of training and planning, I ran the entire length of Stansted Express in one day!
This challenge was easily one of the most difficult I've executed and one of the toughest by far. Battling the 50 mile journey in very tough conditions set out by Storm Babet, from the busiest railway station in the UK, London Liverpool Street, to one of the busiest airports in London, Stansted Airport.
In an attempt to push myself physically and mentally, I wanted to take this on to prove that I could do it. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time, and after a gruelling 2023 in my personal and professional life, I needed something to focus my time and attention on, and something to get my back on track to what makes me happiest - running and creating TH-cam videos.
This was so much fun putting together and thank you for taking the time to be a part of the journey with me, and thank you@stanstedexpress @greateranglia for making this video possible.

Spoiler Alert: It's quicker taking the train to the airport than it is running there - who'd have thought?!
Why did you even run the Stansted Express anyway? It’s not on the London Rail Map so you don’t really need to.
I've moved on from running the London Rail Map. Maybe sometime in the future though not right now x
@@itsmattnelson Fair enough I suppose. When do you reckon you’ll get back to it? I don’t want to turning back on one of your goals.
Absolutely phenomenal video 👏🥲 The editing, the music choices, the cinematograph, the little tangents to explain things. Everything was just incredible and top notch. So disappointing this has so few views. Its so nice to see you back man
Ah thank you so much!! ❤️❤️ You're welcome to share the link to the video if you so wish!
Wow. What an incredible feat! You should be so proud of this.
Also, super pleased to see you back and uploading. Make sure to do things at your own pace - and put you first x
❤️❤️❤️❤️ Thank you always xxx
Hello, Matt! How lovely to see you and your athletic body again - I thought you'd given all this up! And just two days after my 60th birthday, too - you have cheered me up, trudging through sunny Harlow there, like nobody else would. You're such a star!
It's a pleasure Paul! Hope it was a belated birthday present lol. Hope you're doing well x
No idea why this doesn’t have more views. Fantastic video. And you’re also super cute too. Very inspiring!
I appreciate that, thank you! Definitely didn't feel cute on the way home 🤣🤣
Matt you are a legend! So good to see another challenge from yourself on TH-cam. Fair play!
Hey Matt, it's good to see you back on TH-cam. I really loved the video. Looking forward to more videos.
Thank you for waiting for me ♥️
It's good to see you back. Well done for doing the run and still in time for the train, amazing.
There's usually another train at 00:30 though I think it was cancelled so almost had no choice but to get that last train home! Bet the other passengers wondered what kind of flight I had 🤣🤣 x
Hi Matt I am not sure if you remember me I bumped into you at Luton station while you were running the Thames link, I wanted to chat longer but had to grab train, well done mate great effort
I absolutely do!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to also say hello. Stay tuned for Thameslink in the future 😉 All the best x
Well done.Thank you Matt.
Thank you for watching!
Great video, and a brilliant feat of endurance. Well done!
Thank you very much for watching! 👍 I would recommend taking the train next time - it's so much quicker x
I always come away from your videos with a feeling of inspiration, but enough about me. What a great run in tricky conditions, to say the least! Looking forward to the Eurostar episode ;-)
Keep going Matt, well done!
Hahahaha in due course 😉😉 Thank you as always Scrivins xx
Well done! That's absolutely amazing!!!
Great to see you back! What an achievement!
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
What an incredible achievement, I’m in total awe of you. And so good to have you back.
Thank you ever so much! I really appreciate it as it was quite the process to get to that point, however we made it 💪💪 It's an honour being back, thank you for waiting for me ❤️ x
Lovely to see you back Matt, (runderground) well done on this, I hope you are keeping well.
Thank you, it's a pleasure being back ❤️
Good to see you back - we missed you! Congrats on one hell of a run!
Thank you - I appreciate you waiting for me! ❤️❤️
Welcome back! Will watch fully later 💜
Thank you Denise!! 😘😘😘
Well done Matt ❤❤ Proud of you
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Most superbly excellent! A fantastic ultra!! Love it to pieces. I'm hoping for my own 50+ mile ultra this year as well.
Oh, I really loved the video quality and look of this one.
Thank you so much!! ❤️❤️❤️ Hope this can serve as a bit of inspiration before your huge ultra! All the best and send me an update with how you get on! 🔥🔥
Well done Matt for putting in all the training and hard work to achieve your goal
Thank you! It was pretty tough going, though we made it 💪
Great to see you again, very well done for looking after yourself first.
Thank you so much, sometimes it's important knowing when to take a backseat and prioritise what's most important ❤️ xx
Nice to see you back on TH-cam. I have been on Stansted Express and the Class 745/1s are very nice trains.
Thank you! 🥳
Great to see you back Matt, always loved your content and this top notch!! That looked like a fantastic adventure, looking forward to see what comes next.
Thank you so much! That means a lot. It was certainly the challenge and there was no way I could come back after so long with something half-arsed 🤣🤣
Fab video Matt! it's great to see you back again!
Thank you so much!! It feels amazing to be back on top form 🔥🔥❤️
Glad to see you again. And what an incredible achievement, you are such an inspiration!
Thank you! It's a pleasure ❤️
Hi. The production and storytelling on this video is fab. An amazing adventure really well told. Thanks
Thank you so much! There was a lot of time spent curating the story.
I had about 3 different finished versions of this video and noticed they kept jumping the gun or were missing the satisfaction of proper storytelling. I've always liked the three-act story approach which also helps from a production perspective. One of the clips of a Stansted Express service at Broxbourne station I got up at 5am for just to get the shot as there was only one service a day 🤣
Glad you enjoyed and noticed! Really appreciate it 👍
Well done Matt, so good to see you back!
It feels correct! 🤣 Thanks for waiting for me x
That was a trek! But really enjoyable to watch, nice to see you back on TH-cam again and notice you got the DJI Omso Pocket 3 as well, that's a great Camera! Well done on that Ultra Marathon
Thank you Simon!! Yeah the Osmo Pocket 3 is a beast! Some of the best quality I've seen out of such a small camera x
Amazing, Matt. 15 hours?? What a crazy journey. It's great to see you back, and hope to see some more videos from you soon! 😄
I know this is groundbreaking info, however it turns out it's actually faster getting the train 🤣🤯 Definitely more to come soon xx
That was such a great video and congratulations on that crazy run 💚
Ah thank you!!! ❤️
So good to see you back, an awesome run.
Thank you! Certainly not the shortest run out there 🤣
It’s very nice to see you back on TH-cam. I do like Stansted Express and the Class 745/1s are very nice trains. Shame that they got rid of the Class 379 Electrostars which are heading to Great Northern.
Thank you! It's a pleasure being back. I do like the 379's though it's great they're getting put into use again x
Great to see you back!
Thank you!! It feels right, honestly 🤣🤣
Great concept - a pleasure to watch your journey!
Thank you for watching!
Amazing Matt - Welcome back! X
Thank you Gary!! xx
You’re back! Can I have a woop woop! 🙌🏾
WOOP WOOP!! 🙌🙌🙌
Great to see you back and with such a positive video. I was worried how you were going to manage water supplies. I've only ever done that sort of distance with checkpoints (including cake and hydration) and that was hard enough.
Thank you so much Graham! I'd made the mistake of assuming there'd be water refills outside the stations, though soon found out that wasn't the case lol. Would recommend in the future having checkpoints with water refills and snack stations! 🤣
Fantastic to see you’re back with the videos 😊 I hope all is well behind the scenes now and thank you for the fabulous video as always! ❤
Thank you! Hopefully the worst is behind us, though here's onto more positive things for the future 🥲
It's great to see you back on here, and what a run!
Thank you! Certainly beats the usual parkrun 🤣
Great to see you back again ... and awesome accomplishment!
Thanks so much! I can happily confirm that the train is much, much faster 🤣
well done for running the Stanstead Express
Thank you! 🏃🚂
Matt is back!!
Finally!!! 🤣🤣❤️
Amazing 👏👏👏 What an achievement and so brave.
Cheers Paul! It was definitely one of the he most mentally challenging runs I've done 💪
Welcome back🎉
🥳🥳🥳
Amazing achievement, great video too
Thank you! Much appreciated x
What a brilliant video!
Thank you!
This is wonderful congratulations ❤
Thank you! ❤️
PS we have done Ealing and it wasn't flat, so well done on a PB *there*!!
Hahahaha thank you!! I was hoping someone would clock that 🤣 Yeah Ealing is not the flattest though it's easily the best half marathon out there xx
That was excellent!
Why thank you! Don't think I could justify this in a Reel or TikTok 🤣
OMG UR BACK I MISSED U ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Nice to see you upload content again Matt why haven't you uploaded for so long
Thank you! I needed to take time out for mental health reasons, though we're back ♥️
Great to see you back Matt and glad you took time out, life can be difficult at times. Stay strong 💪
Matts Back 🎉
It's been 84 years...!
Feel like you deserved to get on a flight and go relax somewhere after that!
I know right?! Maybe next time I'll bring my hand luggage and a passport 🤣
I do like Stansted Express, but the "Express" part is doing some very heavy lifting. The new 15 minute interval is very welcome though.
The "express" is a loose interpretation 🤣 Regular trains are absolutely welcome!
We are so back!❤
When it's right, it's right 💁
In my head I am convinced you left London before you reached the M25 Matt! Going to check the map now... Edit - yes, you leave London about 200m before the M25.
I'm getting my own heat training in today. It'll be 40°C, so this might be my last post 🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'll ask the puddle later xx
Acclimate? Someone works with Americans! Presumably the busiest railway station comes from the 2022-2023 figures. It was predicted to be Tottenham Court Road but personally I'm convinced it's going to be Farringdon. I don't think there is any other station with more potential destinations in one train than Farringdon.
Welcome back! Good to see you again.
Are you already married if I may ask? ;)
Hahahaha getting engaged during lockdown meant waiting for the backlog to pass until my own 🤣
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
🙌🙌🙌
I respect you so much because me? I would pass out on 45 minutes running. 15 HOURS HELLO
It was wild honestly, like, who's idea was it again?! (Spoiler alert - it was mine.)
Thinks: "50 miles? He's a fast lad, so 9-10 hours maybe?" ... Commentary "...15 hours..." OMG JESUS THE POOR FELLA THAT'S A LONG TIME OUT
🤣🤣 The struggle was real...!!!
@@itsmattnelson heroic resistance of the lure of the nice warm dry train 🏆
6:00 😂🤣🤣
Honestly lugging that for 50 miles my arm would be absolutely jacked 💪🤣
15:41 when did you do this run? Its giving early february 😭
16:36 Why am i getting scared , An animal can appear at any moment 💀
14:38 HELP WHY HAS IT TURNED INTO A LAKE
It's a bit of a lie to call it an express then isn't it if it stops on the way!
You didn’t take a power bank?
Brought the power bank though forgot the cable to charge my watch 🤦
Good to see you back!
Thank you! It's great being back. ❤️
