    I am so glad he mention the Saw thing, I was watching Mad Max a few years ago with a friend, and when it ends the main character does this "game" when he gives a choice without really giving it and only further tortures more his victim. +CplHicksjr -- dubbing the whole film over into "American" might have helped jump-start Mel Gibson's career and started that wave of Aussie action stars. Since Mel did his own dubbing, directors didn't wrongly assume that Aussie actors couldn't fake an American accent.
      Kinda like that story about Bryan Singer only wanting an "American actor" like Hugh Laurie.

    Great video. Two things though. Gibson wasn't just "hired on the spot" based on his looks. According to an interview with Gibson on the recently released Mad Max bluray, he had to memorize a monologue real quick and perform it for them that day. He said he barely got any of it right and just bullshitted through it, but they liked it.
    And second, I'm curious where you got your info that Mad Max was a smash hit in the US and made that much money because I've read Mad Max was a hit everywhere but the US. This lead to Mad Max 2, the original title of the sequel, to be renamed The Road Warrior because American distributors didn't want audiences to think it was a sequel to something barely anyone in the US saw, the first Mad Max. On the bluray, the title sequence even says "Mad Max 2", with "The Road Warrior" no where to be found. Road Warrior was the one to be a smash hit in the US. This is what I've read, but let me know what you found if you can spare the time.

    • @THHDReviews
      @THHDReviews 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** I read that they made the title 'The Road Warrior' in the US because they didn't know how many people actually saw the first one, which actually ended up making it bring in less money. So, they could have made more money advertising it as a sequel but made the mistake with the title (If my information is correct that is..).
      Also, as an Australian, hearing the dubs for the US version is hilarious!

    • @31FilmTalk
      @31FilmTalk 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Based on the extras on the recent original Mad Max bluray, the first one didn't do that great in the US, but did everywhere else. Road Warrior was a big success in the US.
      The original dubs have been restored over here in the US.

    • @THHDReviews
      @THHDReviews 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Honestly, I'm surprised the movie did as well as it did in the first place with budget restrictions. Its great that it did not go unnoticed considering how much of an influence the franchise has had on so many people.
      Overall I am not surprised that Road Warrior was a much bigger success in the US, but I always thought it didn't quite reach the success of the original.

    • @spiff2268
      @spiff2268 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** The first movie didn't do well in the US or Canada. That's because the company that had the North American distribution rights was basically two brothers running the company out of their garage. They didn't have the money for promoting the film and the only places it got any screen time were the big city art house theaters. When the second movie was made they called it The Road Warrior in NA and got one of the big studios to handle promotion and distribution. And it was a huge hit.

    Let me be clear, one of the best things to come out of Mad Max is the wonderful character actress, Sheila Florence. While her role in Mad Max was small (May Swaisey) was small, her talent was obvious even then. A year later she would be signed to what became her signature role 'Lizzie Birdsworth' on the long running Australian soap opera 'Prisoner' (this show would--like Mad Max before it--become so popular it would become a world-wide hit even in the USA where it was known as Prisoner: Cellblock H). For a good look at Miss Florence's talent watch a few episodes (all episodes are available for free here on u-tube).

    4:40 - The term "Under Crank". Just so people know what this means. If all films are shot at 24 frames per second. They would shoot a scene at 18 frames per second, then speed it up to 24 frames to make it faster. This is under cranking. They do it in a lot of fighting action scenes as well.

    I'm going to do a spot of obnoxious name-dropping: at the Warner Bros. press hospitality suite during Comic-Con, I met George Miller, shook his hand and told him "my favourite movies are Happy Max and Mad Feet." He laughed. Best thing ever.

    • @taffysaur
      @taffysaur 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jedd Jong As much as I agree with the sentiment, I have to say I was glad when that movie was mooted.
      I mean... shit, not happy that people were out out of work and all that. But from the perspective of a comics fan and a superhero fan (and particularly DC and Superman) I had to question the logic in blowing your wad by introducing all these awesome characters in a single movie? I have the same problem with Supes v. Bats (along with many, many others... Probably Miller's JLA would have been the lesser of two evils in retrospect...)
      The Flash, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Manhunter from Mars, The Atom, each of these characters could have entire franchises built around them, and then be brought together á la The Avengers once they've all been established. And we can always use more Batman and Superman.
      I mean, since copying Marvel's formula is what we are here to do anyway, which I don't think is a bad thing, especially provided you do it right. Get yourself a Kevin Fiegie to oversee the thing and keep the big picture in mind, and who cares about each character and their potential to reach an audience (I recommend Paul Dini or Jeph Loeb).
      Otherwise, hell _yes_ I'd love Miller to be involved. He has always been one of the premiere action/adventure directors and he could do beautiful things with DC's toybox.

    • @JeddtheJedi
      @JeddtheJedi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mychael Darklighter Very well said. I'm rooting for Batman v Superman, and Suicide Squad looks spot-on in tone. Unfortunately, both Paul Dini and Jeph Loeb are with Marvel. Jeph Loeb is a Marvel TV producer and Paul Dini has been writing and producing the Marvel animated series Hulk and the Agents of SMASH. I really wish that DC had hung to Joss Whedon when he was making the Wonder Woman movie, then he'd be overseeing the Justice League instead of the Avengers.

    The American dubbed Mad Max is a Good/Bad Film. The original, un-dubbed Mad Max is a Good/Great Film.
    My parents took a trip to Australia in the mid-Eighties and asked if there was anything they could bring back. I asked for a videotape copy of Mad Max so I could hear the original audio. The one store they went to where they found it (my parents never traveled to go shopping, but to see the actual sites) the store refused to sell it to them because they were Americans and our videotape standards were different.
    When I finally saw Mad Max with the original audio, it became so much better, Hugh Keays Bryne who plays Toecutter changes his vocal performance in every scene.

      GoodBadFlicks Gaming is suffering through the same thing. Over hype is ruining many things, but after three years of gaming over hype. I am learning to accept that no game or movie is perfect. I'm also learning I'm an old fart at the age 30. I think if I was 12, Jurassic World would be magical and wonderful. To me now, it's just a good summer movie.
      I do think it's the same for you GBF, The new movie won't be magical cause we already had that time that the Mad Max story shocked us and blew our minds, but I do feel if we were kids, Road Fury would blow our minds like the old MadMax did for us older guys

    Terry Gibson stuntman rode the Goose bike and the Toecutter bike in all the high speed scenes carrying David Eggby once on the back all at High Speed. All the high speed scenes were REAL (not sped up)which is why Mad Max is fantastic ! The scene where the bikers chase down the car and smash it up is sped up alittle thou.

    Maybe it was because I was so young when I first saw this film but after watching it the first time, I couldn't sleep for days. The violence was so visceral and "real" feeling that certain scenes got stuck in my head. If a kid to day saw this for the first time they might not think much of it but back in the late '70s or early '80s, this level of gritty, unromanticized violence was not as mainstream as it is now. Now with Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road, it's easy to see what an absolute master of filmic narrative George Miller is.
