Belive it or not, Alan's father and the hunter Van Pelt are actually played by the same actor (Jonathan Hyde), for a purpose: When Alan was a kid, he was long scared of his strict father (Who wants him to go through the same education and work he went thorugh) and felt like his father mistreated him, which caused their relationship to go downhill. But when Alan gets trapped in Jumanji for 26 years, it gives Alan a chance of realizing and regretting what he said to his father, what mistakes he made, and him desperately trying to escape from the game so he can go and change the past. Van Pelt is supposed to be a representation of his father. When he shows up, it gives Alan a big chance at redemption and standing up to his fears and taking responsiblity of what he said to his dad. But instead, Alan runs away when Van Pelt shoots at him, which is a symbol of him running away from his problems with his father. When he sees what happened to the town and the factory, what happened to his father, and how Carl Bentley got fired because of the incident at the factory, it makes Alan have a huge change of heart further and realize it was all caused because of his irresponsibility and cowardice. In the end, when Alan is about to finish the game and he gets confronted at gunpoint by Van Pelt, instead of running away, Alan finally has enough heart and courage to stand up to his fears, go back in time, apologize to his dad about what he said (His dad also had a change of heart for how he scolded and treated his son), and hope for the best with their relationship. Not just that, but Alan also accepts full responsibility for causing the shoe incident at the factory, which saves Carl from being fired and becoming a lousy police officer. Lesson is that no matter what troubles or struggles you go through with your family, they're still your family and they'll still love you. And also, accepting responsibility will help you learn your mistakes and succeed in life without being weighed down by regret, guilt, or shame.

The part where Alan got sucked into the game was actually something which always stuck with me as a kid. I was genuinely afraid of the movie because of that scene. And i still think the whole idea behind this movie is so wonderfully unique and amazing. I am not too much of a fan of the new ones. I wouldn't call them bad, but i found it kinda disheartening that they shifted the concept of playing a boardgame into another direction because boardgames simply aren't hip enough anymore. There were so many routes they could have taken with this concept before going into another direction.
Also, fun fact, there are people who actually created AMAZING replicas of this game, like, you won't believe how close they were able to get it to the original. I recommend looking it up, just out of fun. (Though, I do wish, I could have bought one of them for myself)
Also ,also... LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS?! I LOVE this movie so much too!

YES!!! One of my favorite Robin Williams movies!
I never knew it was based on a book.
I read it and it was a lot different than I thought
The movie recieved mixed reviews by Critics, and Roger Ebert called it one of "the worst kids movies he had ever seen", stating the "PG rating was a joke and that the film should have gotten a PG 13 rating instead".
The film made $250-260 million dollars at the box office against a $65 million dollar budget.
The VFX were done by Industrial Light and Magic, and the special makeup effects were done by Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr.
The music was composed by the late James Horner.

On a side note its neat to see a young Kristen Dunst aka Mary Jane from Sam rami's spiderman trilogy and the hunter van pelt chasing Alan plays his father

I bet it was already said here, but just in case. The actor who plays Alans father also plays Van Pelt. As the game stated thru out the movie, the games brings forth our deepest darkest dreads. For Alan, it was the image of his father from whom he was trying to run away even before the game began. Van Pelt was even teaching him the same lessons as his father have only more ruthlessly. Thats why Alan was so afraid of him. And when Alan finally stood up to Van Pelt at the end Pelt even said "Hold it Sonny boi!" followed by "Your finally acting like a man"!

I'm so glad you enjoyed the film. The cgi was... in its infancy, but the animatronics are all stellar, my favorite probably being the killer orchid. The mosquitos probably bothered me the most as a kid too (thank goodness there were no leeches in the film). I love the detail that Jonathan Hyde (who was also in Anaconda, Titanic, Ritchie Rich, and The Mummy, lol every 90s film) not only plays Van Pelt but Allan's father. It makes me wonder if Van Pelt looks different depending on the player.

This will always be a favorite of mine. The effects are still pretty good even by today's standards. I remember being young enough to watch the cartoon series based on this movie, where the riddles were more life lessons for the day while the kids got sucked into the game to help Alan. You got to see Jumanji where literally everything was trying to kill you. Even the anteaters had sharp teeth and hunger for human flesh. Though the series ending wasn't as satisfying as this movie it was still more imaginative then the Jumanji sequels.

One thing I love about all of your reactions though is how you recognize and pay attention to the soundtracks. Music in movies is so important, and James Horner's score for this is beautiful.
