Brushes, cups and exotic named soaps are relics from the old-school in grandpa's day. I have found Cremo, Wilkinson blades and Qshave adjustable razor to be the best combination. I agree technique is essential.

Hey Nick thanks a bunch for your suggestions. I’ve been wet shaving for a couple weeks and have noticed huge improvement from razor burn. Some days zero razor burn some days a little bit, but much better than the cartridge razors. The safety razor I know takes time to learn so I’m sure that’s why I’m still getting some razor burn. Gotta work on my technique, but I have been wanting to try some different soaps, creams, and blades so your suggestions help! Thank you! Best budget astringent: Generic or store brand witch hazel. I can find it at the grocery store for $2-3. Best budget after shave balm: Nivea Sensitive Post-Shave Balm, $4-5 Best budget after shave: Family Dollar "Spice", $2. Smells better than the current Old Spice. I'd also recommend picking up a styptic pencil, which I've seen at Wal-Mart for $1. I use all these regularly; the witch hazel I use after every shave.

Great to see you do this type of video. I think I'm going to recommend the S-Brush for beginners over boar brushes, because some people don't enjoy the ritual aspects and want to rush through every shave. Soaking gets in the way of that, or so they tell me. Some of the software I've given away to new wet shavers: Nivea Shaving Cream, and Arko sticks. The cream is perfectly usable, but it dries out on the face when you're a new wet shaver taking your time. Arko, despite what people think about the scent, is a massive bang for the buck. I think I need to try Proraso creams, because they seem very user friendly for beginners.
Nivea is such a great product and even their shave cream can hold its own against the best of them. It's so German in my opinion because of its performance and its efficiency(little = long way) and reliability. Good Stuff indeed.

$9 Weishi, $1 williams is all I started with. I added a pre/post shave later, but honestly the smell is what I like more that the feeling... I know very mild razor, but when you are a noob you have to start somewhere....

Barbasol cream has been my go to cream for thousands of generations! nick shaves I use dorco blades and I've use them for a while and they work well for me! Can you recommend me other blades?
If you follow up the first shave with a good quality electric razer, like Norelco's best pretreated with Lelctric shave, you'll also get a very close shave with no irritation and little chance of any skin cuts.

Today I received the stuff I ordered from Italian Barber. I did my first Wet shave today and to be fair it went as bad as I feared. I cut my neck open in several areas and the ASTRA platinum blade that I used pulled and hurt like hell (I believe I was using the wrong angle so I kept changing it). nick shaves What should I do to prepare myself for the next shave and how do I clean up my shaving soap and boar brush properly? hey nick, when you are done shaving can you still feel your beard? i follow your with the grain and both directions across the grain technique, but i feel like i'm not getting as close of a shave as you seem to get. maybe i'm just expecting too much without going against the grain.

Razor blades and more is also a great place to shop online. Their Matador razors are the best bang for your buck and they carry many other brands as well. For soap, check out Eva Nesterova on Etsy. At $1 an ounce for the performce, they can't be beat.
My first DE razor was a vintage razor from classicshaving.com. It was quite mild, and I truly enjoyed shaving with it. It was priced really well at $25.
If you liked the P160 try the 1kg Cella Soap block (Italian Barber) it is a soap thats been made for 80 plus years a great Italian almond scented soap. Best part there's so much so you can share it with your friends that show an interest.

Grant Rodgers personally I think Nick's recommendation was spot on for a beginner. Buy a sampler pack. You will virtually never see even 2 shavers agree on the best blade for any razor, level of experience shaving, or anything else. The best possible recommendation, in my opinion, is buy a sampler pack and try different blades. The point of this video was to make recommendations, not provide a tutorial. He, and others, do videos on trying to find the best blade, etc, etc. My 2 cents, of course you may not agree :) ...

After looking over some razors, I'm thinking the MR5 seems like great bang for the buck. Question on soap. Can I lather off of say, sea butter bar soap? How long does one of those shaving sopas last? I'm switching to safety razor more to save money long term vs a hobby. If I need buy special soap very often it'd defeat a lot of the purpose. Currently I just splash on a little bar soap and shave. But that wont be a good idea with safety razor shaving. If you have any advice for stretching the $ to a maximum, I'd love to hear it. John Umek For me, personna are still my #1. They are sharp and smooth (not the sharpest nor the smoothest blades out there), but the balance in these blades of sharpness/smoothness is hard to beat
Go to the art of shaving and pick up a $25 dollar shave starting kit. As long as you have a decent razor, wether it be cartridge or safety, ideally you shouldn't get a straight razor until you've mastered a safety! I personally think that this lit is great for the price because you get an awesome shaving cream w/ great slickness, a pre-shave oil that works well, an after-shave balm, and a decent starter badger hair brush! It's great for the price, and you can find them cheaper on eBay that are new!
Is it normal that at 16 years old I already want to get into classic shaving? (because I already have to shave 1 or 2 times a week) really, this interests me a lot.
I would suggest proraso or Arko instead Razorock. They are much better quality. However I would suggest Cream for beginners as its much easier to lather.
It's so hard when buying your first gear to choose a budget point where you won't mind essentially wasting said money if you don't like it and and at the same time getting something good enough that you won't immediately want to upgrade if you DO like it - again wasting said money lol I think you found a nice balance here - one thing I wish someone beat into my head early on was that throwing more and more money at shave gear isn't necessarily going to lead to a better shave or experience.

I think it's a big mistake to skip a post-shave for any reason (time, money, convenience, etc.) Post-shave products will help you get great shaves in the future, and your skin will help you look your best. My list for a budget DE wet shave would be: 1.Merkur 23c or 34c $40-50 2.Razorock plissoft brush, or Maggard plissoft brush $12 (I like the 24mm knot) 3.Taylor of old bond street shaving cream (Ease of lathering and quality are excellent. Great product to start with.) Buy from a trusted seller, and avoid extreme temps with these creams during shipping $16-20 4.Lucky Tiger post shave balm, alcohol free, 8oz. $16-18 5. Trader Joe's "nourish" moisturizer, 6oz for $6.50 (a more expensive moisturizer I'd recommend would be the Moon brand from California, 4oz for $18 6. I'll recommend a palm bowl for $20. It's "the chairman" from Vikings Blade, sandblasted steel (wont break if dropped, retains heat well). I use it to help load my brush with softer creams/soaps. It's too small to be a lather bowl, I like to face-lather like Nick does. Captain's Choice makes a nice copper lather bowl for $40. Get a bowl that won't break if dropped, make sure it can take some punishment. 7. Blade sampler (Gillette super stainless from Russia, Perma Sharp from Russia, Feathers from Japan, Shark Super Chrome from Egypt, Astra SP super platinum from Russia) $20 8. Alum block $5 9. Razor & brush stand $15 About $170 to start. Maggards, The Razor Company, and Italian Barber(RazorRock) are terrific online sellers, highly recommend them.
Nick, I must echo other commenters here in expressing surprise at your recommendation of P160. The overwhelming thing I have read about that soap is that a huge number of people have reactions to it. Better to recommend Proraso or TOBS, in my opinion.

I'm switching to safety razor more to save money long term vs a hobby. If I need buy special soap very often it'd defeat a lot of the purpose.
Currently I just splash on a little bar soap and shave. But that wont be a good idea with safety razor shaving. If you have any advice for stretching the $ to a maximum, I'd love to hear it.
I have already purchased the Omega 10066 and a stand, and they are including some Astra razors.

I have a question regarding a brush. What is your opinion on the Muhle Silvertip Fibre brush? They advertise with that it is only upsides and no downsides. It is better than normal fibre or natural brushes. Which to me seems like a PR talk.
Before I invest 40 bucks for it, I'd love to hear your opinion.

nick shaves I use your technique of squeezing the lather out of the brush everyday! I do a full 3 passes and then the clean up pass. It works great for me...
I got the Maggard MR9 razor for $14 with handle and blade for $17. I wanted the long handle as i hate short handle razors.

John Umek For me, personna are still my #1. They are sharp and smooth (not the sharpest nor the smoothest blades out there), but the balance in these blades of sharpness/smoothness is hard to beat
Go to the art of shaving and pick up a $25 dollar shave starting kit. As long as you have a decent razor, wether it be cartridge or safety, ideally you shouldn't get a straight razor until you've mastered a safety! I personally think that this lit is great for the price because you get an awesome shaving cream w/ great slickness, a pre-shave oil that works well, an after-shave balm, and a decent starter badger hair brush! It's great for the price, and you can find them cheaper on eBay that are new!

I would suggest proraso or Arko instead Razorock. They are much better quality. However I would suggest Cream for beginners as its much easier to lather.

It's so hard when buying your first gear to choose a budget point where you won't mind essentially wasting said money if you don't like it and and at the same time getting something good enough that you won't immediately want to upgrade if you DO like it - again wasting said money lol I think you found a nice balance here - one thing I wish someone beat into my head early on was that throwing more and more money at shave gear isn't necessarily going to lead to a better shave or experience.
I think my suggested beginner shaving kit would be:
1. Feather Popular razor. ($13) (Alt: Shaving Factory)
2. Blade sampler. ($8)
3. VDH/Proraso shaving soap. ($3-8) (Alt: Biotique shaving cream)
4. Nivea Sensitive aftershave balm. ($5) (Alt: Nivea alcohol free splash)

That is a good recommendation. I can't believe how good the Palmolive stick is, especially at its low price.

Spend the extra $20 at Italian Barber and get an aftershave by Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements. It's an antiseptic, astringent, moisturizer and cologne in one bottle.

I think it's a big mistake to skip a post-shave for any reason (time, money, convenience, etc.) Post-shave products will help you get great shaves in the future, and your skin will help you look your best. My list for a budget DE wet shave would be:
1.Merkur 23c or 34c $40-50
2.Razorock plissoft brush, or Maggard plissoft brush $12 (I like the 24mm knot)
3.Taylor of old bond street shaving cream (Ease of lathering and quality are excellent. Great product to start with.) Buy from a trusted seller, and avoid extreme temps with these creams during shipping $16-20
4.Lucky Tiger post shave balm, alcohol free, 8oz. $16-18
5. Trader Joe's "nourish" moisturizer, 6oz for $6.50 (a more expensive moisturizer I'd recommend would be the Moon brand from California, 4oz for $18
6. I'll recommend a palm bowl for $20. It's "the chairman" from Vikings Blade, sandblasted steel (wont break if dropped, retains heat well). I use it to help load my brush with softer creams/soaps. It's too small to be a lather bowl, I like to face-lather like Nick does. Captain's Choice makes a nice copper lather bowl for $40. Get a bowl that won't break if dropped, make sure it can take some punishment.
7. Blade sampler (Gillette super stainless from Russia, Perma Sharp from Russia, Feathers from Japan, Shark Super Chrome from Egypt, Astra SP super platinum from Russia) $20
8. Alum block $5
9. Razor & brush stand $15
About $170 to start. Maggards, The Razor Company, and Italian Barber(RazorRock) are terrific online sellers, highly recommend them.
Nick, I must echo other commenters here in expressing surprise at your recommendation of P160. The overwhelming thing I have read about that soap is that a huge number of people have reactions to it. Better to recommend Proraso or TOBS, in my opinion.
Beau Champion I had no idea that people had reactions to this new formulation too. I know that the original RR p.160 had problems, but I didn't realize this one did too.. Thanks for pointing this out!
I wouldn't recommend proraso either. Although it is a common choice for beginners, the green formula irritates my skin and performance is mediocre.
On second thought proraso sensitive might be a good first soap.
ok shaving as a hobby, new concept for me thnx. Im required to shave every day. lost my electric razor, went back to cartridges, didnt have the money for them one day. found discount safety razor(microtouch with dorco razors) my skin feels better.

I don't know about recommending P160 to a beginner. There are a lot of people whom found that they are allergic to the almond oil used in that soap.
