James Murphy-Walsh I couldn’t have said it better brother, I just think back to 1980 I was working on a carnival 🎡 in Essex Md and I was so close to the places she was singing 🎤 at & didn’t know it
the tune is early 17th century by Hassler-often paired with the devotional christian lyrics "O Sacred Head Now Wounded" lovely guitar work with a lovely voice here, yes?
@@elizabethlinsay9193 It is indeed Hasslers composition, Bach made his version on that , and Paul Simon used Bach's version, Eva Cassidy made her version on Simon's version.
A few days after the 9/11 tragedy I saw Mary Chapin Carpenter perform at the tiny Gay Street Theater in Little Washington, Virginia. Everyone was raw and still shaken. She sang this song and there was not a dry eye in the room. And I had a sense that we all had a small healing in that three minutes. Sometimes a song just reflects back as if it was written for a time and place that comes in the future. Now here we are, 2021 with more than ten times the people dead from one cause only a year ago. 9/11s happening in one day. I just don’t know if there is a song for this. But I hope so. We need the healing.
Many's the time I've been mistaken And many times confused Yes, and I've often felt forsaken And certainly misused Oh, but I'm alright, I'm alright I'm just weary to my bones Still, you don't expect to be bright and bon vivant So far away from home, so far away from home And I don't know a soul who's not been battered I don't have a friend who feels at ease I don't know a dream that's not been shattered Or driven to its knees But it's alright, it's alright For we lived so well so long Still, when I think of the Road we're traveling on I wonder what's gone wrong I can't help it, I wonder what has gone wrong And I dreamed I was dying I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly And looking back down at me Smiled reassuringly And I dreamed I was flying And high up above my eyes could clearly see The Statue of Liberty Sailing away to sea And I dreamed I was flying We come on the ship they call The Mayflower We come on the ship that sailed the moon We come in the age's most uncertain hours And sing an American tune Oh, and it's alright, it's alright, it's alright You can't be forever blessed Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day And I'm trying to get some rest That's all I'm trying to get some rest

How on earth can 6 people dislike this beautiful tune by Paul Simon ( + Bach & Hassler 😁) with its wonderful lyrics and Eva Cassidy's amazing performance? Too many years of brainwashing with dead boring rap and hip-hop with stupid lyrics and minimal tunes? 🙄
Bjowolf2 I love this song and I love her voice, and I don't mind she changed the melody here and there because that's what she normally did, but she changed quite a few of the original lyrics which, for me, changed the message of the song somewhat.
@@debclare9942 Well, just her interpretation - I don't mind, when it's done that well. Hmm, she didn't change Paul Simon's tune very much, but Paul Simon changed it a bit in some parts from Häßler's original and Bach's version and added some extra sections of his own ( the B piece: "And I dreamt I was dying ..." ).
The tune is from an old German love song of 1601 by Hans Leo Hassler (Mein Gmüth ist mir verwirret, das macht ein Jungfrau zart = My mind is disturbed by a fair young maiden). Paul Gernhard used the melody in 1656 for his translation of a Latin hymn (Salve caput cruentatum) to "Oh Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" later translated to English "Oh Sacred Head Sore Wounded". This was included into the Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1727. th-cam.com/video/CuuLfWq2N9k/w-d-xo.html is the original version. Bach reused many tunes and chorals, be it his own or from another composer, as his duty as Thomaskantor was to provide weekly motets and the music for the church services with the Thomaschor and the Gewandhausorchester and to teach music. There was no time to create something original for every occasion. Also, the use of the same melody in church and secular music was common practice.
Love the vocal dynamics here. Truly inspiring and impressive. However, IMO, the softer, less dynamic renditions feel truer to the melancholic sense of the lyrics and music. I'm sure Eva's vocal abilities allowed her to perform any piece in any presentation style she desired. Wonderfully talented. Yes, past tense for "allowed" and "desired". Sadly, Eva lost her battle with skin cancer so young (age 33). But, fortunately for lovers of fine music and captivating, moving voices, be glad and appreciative that, in her relatively short time, Eva left her soul for all to feel and enjoy in her music and lovely voice... forever. ... As well as I know, as I read the name of the man "Deep Throat" is known, because this man declared himself as the man who informed Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward. Both men knew the name of "Deep throat" I am sure about.
The title fits the lyrics written by Paul Simon. Yes, the main musical theme is from Bach's hymn, but the bridge is Simon's and the song highlights his genius in adapting such a piece to the pop song structure. I think Bach would have approved.
There is not a single song of her that left me untouched. She expresses her pure heart in the most artful way. I am grateful forevery song I hear..
She is one the greatest singers ever to have lived tragically the world never recognised her talent until after she died in 1996.
Beautiful. Simply the best female singer to have ever lived. So poignant when she sings 'And I dreamed I was dying.'
Her voice is a gift from god, she is definitely an angel. The most beautiful voice I have ever heard.
James Murphy-Walsh - I agree. Wholeheartedly.

Jehovah has promised to resurrect her here on earth and she will definitely be a wonderful part of what He originally purposed for the earth.
Eva is a natural singer-arranger-interpreter
of songs. She makes every cover
her own. That is rare.
Instablaster.
I know right... Fields of Gold was such a lame song till Eva came along. (With apologies to the author, whoever that was 😂)
One of the few people I'd resurrect, if I only had the power. Bless you Eva!!
Eva Cassidy is the best singer I've ever heard - what a pleasing voice !
The modulations of her voce takes her songs to a state of ecstacy.
Pulling up Eva's voice is a way to call your angels.
I could never be thankful enough for recorded sound upon hearing anything Eva Cassidy sings.
Eva's crystaline voice moves me to tears, this song is even more poignant since her passing
Now that is lovely. What a wonderful version of a brilliant song.
Esta voz!!! Esta mujer!!! Grande por siempre!!! That voice!!! That woman!!!! Great forever 🙏⭐️🦋🩵
Fields of gold
The song that introduced me to this wonderful voice.
Once you hear Eva's, you will always only hear
Eva.
Love this song so much
Great song, great interpretation.
This is NOT an easy song to do. EVA pulls it off with Her usual EASE. WOW...........She is { was } a GIFT.
Wow. Just wow.
Great Cover by Great Eva ❤️🌷💎🌟👌👍🙏👏👏💐RİP🙏😔
One of the best covers I've heard
Such a soul.

I always think of 9/11 when listening to Eva sing this masterpiece.
I am still just wowed by her gift! I hate that she died so young! From damn skin cancer.
Wonderfull version of my favourite song.

I don't know a dream that's not been shattered
Or driven to its knees
But it's alright, it's alright
For we lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the
Road we're traveling on
I wonder what's gone wrong
I can't help it, I wonder what has gone wrong
And I dreamed I was dying
I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly
And looking back down at me
Smiled reassuringly
And I dreamed I was flying
And high up above my eyes could clearly see
The Statue of Liberty
Sailing away to sea
And I dreamed I was flying
We come on the ship they call The Mayflower
We come on the ship that sailed the moon
We come in the age's most uncertain hours
And sing an American tune
Oh, and it's alright, it's alright, it's alright
You can't be forever blessed
Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day
And I'm trying to get some rest
That's all I'm trying to get some rest

Ein wunderbares Lied. Warum? Es ist die Melodie des Chorals "Wenn ich einmal soll scheiden" von J.S.Bach!

Somebody knows what they’re talking about. That’s the right provenance of the tune.

best white female voice in America...EVER
argh, which key is this?they say C but it doesn't sound like
Ovation guitar?
Has Paul Simon heard this?? I hope so. He will not get over it.
I wonder if Eva have sung it for Bach in their heaven? I think he indeed would have approved.
Haupt voll Blut und Wunden ...

And Bach could then pay tribute to Hans Leo Hassler 😉

Great voice but why is this called American Tune’ when it is a straight rip of JS Bach?
Which piece by Bach?
The title is ironic.

A pretty lousy cover. She skewers the words, and sings it fairly listlessly.
