    Natural World: Nature's Biggest Beasts
    The world's biggest beasts have always captured the imagination. But whilst being big can have its advantages, it also comes with sizeable challenges. Take the world's largest lizard, the Komodo dragon, whose huge appetite means it must take on prey ten times its weight, or the tallest animal of them all - the giraffe - who, with such a long neck, must control immense blood pressure. Nature's biggest beasts must go to extraordinary lengths to thrive.
    Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of entertaining and thought-provoking natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

      If you watch BBC earth behind the scene, they usually film this kind of shoots in a controlled environment, so very likely this wasn't film inside a cave, but on a set to emulate the environments as best as they could, of course most other shoots of larger subjects are filmed on site where the crews battle the elements head on and might take months to get the shoots they want.

      Well...there actually a documentary about how BBC does it. and its actually very cruel. This isnt a real world environment. its a "stage set" like a movie.
      You dont have to look too carefully to notice the lighting isnt natural.
      But more importantly, in many cases, they are set up, like when a snake goes after a mouse, it was a closed anvironment and the mouse was placed in front of the snake.
      In situations like this, lets say the creature dies and doesnt make it for the next shot, they will just use another creature. if you pay attention, you can notice differences in these creatures. also not saying it happens 100% of the time, but most of the time.

      @@AnansitheSpider8 Like I said, insects and humans are very different. Just look at moisture levels in an insect, the percentage is very small, if we were to freeze then there would be permanent damage to our muscle tissue because we are warm blooded mammals, and mammals have a huge percentage of water in their bodies typically, and water freezes so our tissue would expand and contract; even our bones would take severe damage I bet. Also, insects, like this one here, have exoskeletons. We do not. Anyway, in order for us to do this we would have to die, then be resurrected. Good luck finding a way to ressurect a block of ice, which we would literally be.

      This insect is unconscious, almost all cellular activity comes to a standstill therefore consciousness disappears. It's only when the body of this insect starts to warm up that it's awareness and consciousness begins to come back.
      All you have to do is imagine going to bed tonight and instead of having that 8 hours pass by in a split second, imagine literally sitting there for 8 hours with your eyes closed. It's a good thing consciousness is turned off or else sleeping would suck

    • @Malingda
      @Malingda 2 ปีที่แล้ว +93

      They have a natural antifreeze in their blood called hemolymph which contains low molecular weight cryoprotectants such as amino acids(proline) and the disaccharide trehalose(glucose). They're jam-packed full of glycoproteins which is what allows them to freeze approx 85% of their fluids without damaging cells. The amino acids and sugars help decreases the ice content colligatively; however, they also have a direct protective effect on membranes and proteins via direct interaction or by modifying the water layer with the closest proximity to the molecules. The remainder 15-20% is when suspended animation(temporary slowing/stopping of biological function so physiological capabilities are preserved) is activated to keep the other organs unfrozen.
      But the Alpine Tree Weta, also in NZ, can actually survive being 100% frozen.

    • @leonav218
      @leonav218 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      The insects do not have a single organ for brain,insted they have clusters of neurons throughout their body.....so even if 20 per cent is left unfrozen some parts of neurological activity maybe left undisturbed. And they don't have a heart too, the blood(a thick viscous fluid in them) is present all inside surrounding the organs. They have very primitive and different physiology compared to complex better evolved animals. Suspended animation is what happens to this insect when frozen,it means that the metabolism and other life functions are reduced to bare minimum for a prolonged time so as to sustain life. Ofcourse it can be possible only to a certain period of time beyond which the insect will die.

      Humans did start evolving for colder climates. Humans arose in Africa for the most part and some humans ended up migrating North. Those humans ended up losing a lot of pigmentation in their skin because they didn't have so much sunlight anymore, they ended up evolving smaller noses and smaller lips because heat conservation was more important than heat dissipation.
      So we did kind of evolve for the cold but ultimately we were never put to the test as much as most other animals were. As we moved North we began to use clothing and tools to keep us warm. I'm sure if we evolved in the snow we would look a lot different than we do now
