  • How do you get into the film industry without film school?
Here is a short documentary on how it’s done. 6 steps. First thing is answering the question what do you want to do in the film industry?
    1. Get very clear on what job you want to do. Research as much as you can about that on Google and TH-cam. I can tell you upfront that actually seeing somebody do that job is going to be what is the most valuable. That’s how you’re going to be able to see if this is something that you really want to do.
    2. Next I want you to think about what kind of knowledge do you need to have about that job that most people don’t have. My motto: Do more than what anybody else would think of doing.
    3. Build your own professional connections. Professional connections you only make on set. You can make friends at film school, but these will be people who are trying to get into the professional film industry. You’re not going to make professional connections at film school.
    4. You need to be on film sets every week learning your craft from professionals. Every week you should learn something major that will help you in your career.
    5. The next step is to make a list of people that are in your area that are doing the job that you want to do. Put on that list all of the people that you’ve met on set that you think are really good, that are doing the job that you want to do as well as working in departments that work with your department.

    Amazing documentary.
I'm from Italy, 35yo, and i've been researching Surround Sound audio creation/mixing since I was 15yo.
Started with a small AIO Home Theater, then I moved on to actual Pro Tools/Dolby/DTS technologies and a proper pro HT.
Other than that, in the past 3 years, I also studied A LOT about screenwriting as well, and I actually thought about writing a feature script as well.
I'm from Sicily, so there are actually no people in my area from the industry.
I should probably move to the USA someday.

Hey Janet! I got your course for FIF years ago. Lots of travel vlogging and life experiences later.. im back! Ill be returning to all course work today and getting my butt into gear here in my local sector of Chicago.
Not going to lie, the idea of film school and making friends plus the college experienceat UCLA seems quite twinkly, however i realize that im really interested in working in the film industry doing what i love first and foremost.
Instead of making friends with students its more important and literally the entire point to be on set, making collegeaus, and actually getting paid

I AGREE about being on set but I have NO IDEA how to get on professional sets. I'm currently the sole videographer at a church and my time is very flexible but I know that randomly emailing professionals is going to get me ignored because they don't know me. How can I start building relationships with these people to even have the CHANCE to work for free on these professional sets??

Do you have any good sources, outside from yourself, on learning detail about the job? I understand it will look something like this > PA > Sound PA > Sound Tech > Boom OP > Mixer.

What if you actually do have film school knowledge along with Acting, Writing, Directing, Producing, Editing and Sound and also Lighting? I’m asking because Acting has mainly been my dream since I was a kid, I have done a few acting things along with some of the other things I listed and live in Arizona and not California anymore. Is there any info, tips or pointers for this?

I am very sorry to say NONE of this has worked for me at all. I'm an award-winning filmmaker here in the UK and its a lot harder that you are making out. I've been making films for 24 years and I currently have 5 films in 86 film festivals and I have not got an agent or am working in the industry. Though, I am filming my 3rd feature, I currently am not working, not because I choose not to. We have a recession in the UK and its horrible.
