How the tables turned! He became the oriental woman in Madame Butterfly for the 'Western'-dressed man flying away on an aircraft, who had acted like his country's diplomat and never to return. Absolute genius to capture how art inspired life that, in turn, inspired art again.

i still remember watching this movie in the early 90's,people hated this and the crying game for the themes of the movies, but this was about 2 people who had this complex love in the mist of the cold war,and even though this guy was a womanizer you kind of had to feel for what he gave up for an illusion...we all have fallen for the illusion of love at one time.but i do agree with the comments, both actors should have gotten oscars for this wonderful work.

I felt like his Orientalism and attendant stereotypical ideas left him hopelessly vulnerable to all sorts of blindness. In the end, though, you are left with him as a tragic fool who needs to incarnate his ideal to understand who he really is in the story; and you are left with John Lone's character as almost a cipher. - a contemptuous and willing tool of The State? A character whose forbidden love can only be permitted through betrayal?
They both should have won big awards - Lone especially. I don't think he's acted for some years. I wonder what happened to him?

that is why the story (and a true one by the way) makes this movie so good.

Did you like "Kiss of the Spider Woman" I remember all these films came out around the same time as "Howard's End". and I am not sure why Hollywood was financing some of these movies so much at the time. I was in my late teens/early 20's. Also "Altered States" and that movie with Kiefer Sutherland about dying and being brought back to life....the really hugely financed features....and who was pushing these...even at the time I was aware that some films were being pushed in a major way. Ever see "The Player"? Or "Short Cuts" (?)...all about some kind of social manipulation (as Altman showed us)

Coitado.

Jeremy Irons was not nominated because the Academy awards are more about politics, who you know and money making, than about art.

It was also a poorly received film upon release in 1993 and the Academy has rarely been receptive to David Cronenberg's films.
