Thank you for sharing your equipment Marcel! I know you only keep one handheld recorder with you in favor of using the F6 or Mixpre 6 but have you seen/are you interested in trying out the new Tascam Portacapture X8 when it comes out? It seems to be a real step up from the other recorders they’ve made, especially with the Bluetooth adapter for long-distance control
I'm not sure about the audio quality of the Tascam's capsules. I would also need the W11 (wind protection) for it. I love it when they post photos from this recorder in grass and forest recording ambience. It looks good in photos, but what about the wind? They should have at least one fur in the box. I contacted a music store, but it's already sold out. I'll know more tomorrow when this recorder arrives again.
Hey, as sound designer I highly suggest you on checking the Austrian Audio Hi-X55, as your next field recording headphones. They are easy to drive, have way more detail than competition in that price range, the noise separation is very good they seem to be very durable especially with the ability to replace pads and cable it they ever break, and also very comfortable for long term use, which makes them perfect for field recording. I'm not related to Austrian Audio at all, I'm recommending them only because I love the ones that I bought and use, and I feel that they could help in your work, which is amazing!
Excellent stuff. I am using (among other mics) the Wildtronics pro mono-stereo parabolic. I remember your videos with that mic a couple of years ago. I have to admit I love using it.
For the comparison video with the F6 and mixpre6 maybe you can record a stereo with the L and R in the different recorders with the same amount of gain 😊
Marcel, (I hope that is correct), I'm glad I found this video. It's very interesting indeed. I've been looking into sound/field recording since I found your "Zoom H1n changed my life" video, which I watched after it appeared on TH-cam next to a video I watched. It was random and very unrelated to what I was watching, but I was intrigued. Better still, you inspired me to buy a field recorder. No prizes for guessing which one. 🙂 I now feel that I am ready to upgrade and, to be honest, I'm quite confused about how to set up a mic (e.g. a couple of omnidirectionals) with a separate recorder. My confusion is around how to connect, cables to buy, and everything not H1n and other single-unit setups. I wonder if it might be useful to try an omnidirectional mic with the H1n, or what other types of mic I might try before upgrading to separate pieces of equipment. I mean, it's so easy to turn on the H1n and record. Upgrading to separate mics and recorder feels confusing, and I feel it would be very easy to spend money only to find out that I bought the wrong thing/s. I wonder if you would be interested in choosing 2 or 3 set-ups and recording a video to show exactly what equipment each set-up requires, from the recorder and mic to the cables and the uses for the particular set-up. Incidentally, I have been unable to find any starter kit retailers, anywhere.
Hello Zander! Thank you so much for reaching out, and fear not! There are several ways you can go about it, but you're right. Things can get confusing and tricky, and ending up with the wrong gear really sucks. It happened to us too. Feel free to write to me about your budget, and I can put something together. Also, keep in mind that microphones have different polar patterns with different purposes, just like different lenses, you know? By the way, we actually made a video about what I would buy with a $1000 budget. I'm a big fan of compact setups like The Cinela Albert with the MKH 8040 or Schoeps DMS kits. If you like to record ambience, having something like this is always great to be ready to go. Even the Rode NTSF1 is a compact ready-to-go setup that comes with cables and wind protection. All you need is a stand. But now we need a recorder with at least four inputs. If you just want to use the H1n, Mic Booster has a smaller set of 3.5 mini-jack omnis that run on plug-in power. But again, if you have a budget you'd like to invest, just let me know, and I'm here for you to give you some options :)
Would love to get your opinion on the Schoeps ORTF-3D OUTDOOR SET and hoe useable it is. 8 channel 3D sound is there a market for it? Wondering if just trying it :-) Would be kind of a jump from my Roland-R26 setup 😂 … Still a beyerdynamic 770 PRO fan love the neutrality of it …
I had the same thing happening to my AT-ATH M40s. I ordered some replacement earpads from Brainwavz and they're BETTER than new. Thanks so much for sharing your equipment list. I really love your stealth setup in the backpack.
Marcel, I know you were using the AT BP4025 Mic before. Are you now leaving that behind and instead going for the Rode Ambisonic since it's more versatile?
Hi Regan! That's correct. The AT 4025 is right now in a box somewhere in the US. I have no more space to carry it with me. Also, since the DMS generates a XY pattern, it won't make sense to have it.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks for the answer. My main use case is recording music (ethnomusicology) and ambient sounds outside. Would you recommend I sell my 4025 and buying the Rode Ambisonic? How high quality is the Rode?
Hmmm, I think for music recordings, the VR is more versatile because if you record several musicians or instruments, later you can pan the recording into different directions and focus on one instrument and later on a another. So yes I would do that. Quality wise, the Rode is a good microphone but you can also look into others. That's up to you.
I'm in documentary film production. I use a MS set (DPA4070 and Schoeps mk8 cmc1) but want something more compact for small camera setups. I wonder if you have experience or opinion on dedicated MS mics like the cms50 or cheaper audio technica bp4029 or shure vp88. Thanks
@@FreeToUseSounds sorry what I meant is mimicking the rode nt-sf with xy on h1n and xy on f1 and from four audio tracks rendered to ambient sound, 5.1 or 7.1, just wondering maybe someone can make experiment on this kind of set up..🙂
@@OdjoAdja Oh yes you mean to encode a stereo signal into an ambisonic signal? There is a video out there. Look for "Encoding audio using the StereoEncoder - Ambisonics Tutorial". Now from there, believe me you can go down the rabbit hole and find out more about it.
Hello! Great videos and info in your channel. Thank you so much. I'm curious. With the addition of the Rode NT-FS1, It seems like you would have more post production options with the NT-FS1 over the Shoeps DMS at a 3rd of the cost. There are several DPA 4060 versions. Did you buy this one? DPA KIT-4060-OC-SMK - also why are you using these again vs the Usi Pros? And if you had to buy a pair of stereo stealth mics would you again buy the 4060s or a different set of mics?
I have the DPA 4060 d:screet but not sure if they are still available. I'm not using them again, I've never stopped using them. Try to record with the Usi's in a bus, train or tram with the windows closed. The DPAs can handle the pressure when the bus drives over bumps but the LOM's don't.

I was going to choose SE8 but then I listend to recordings online vs nt5s and they were much noisier to my ear, probably due to lower sensitivity. Could you point me in the right direction? Thanks. Thank you for such great content you post, one question for you... what would you recommend to record live music without access to the soundboard/mixer, just a Zoom H1N kind of recorder? Perhaps a specific microphone? Thanks a lot in advance!
Hi Bernie, thank you so much! Hmm for live recording you can use a Zoom h1n but I would recommend using a limiter and keep on checking the levels. Don't be to close to the speakers. But any recorder with on board microphones should work fine. If you have more money to spend, omnis are great too.
Are you having to use impedance converters on your contact mics? I've been researching why my mics produce such a tiny, hissy sound with my zoom recorders.
Hi Cedric, I don't use converters and right now I don't have a good contact microphone. The one I had with PP was awesome but the piezo I have is terrible. The Geofon doesn't need a converter.
