I'd like to throw my name in the hat and say I'd like to see videos about your video gear or maybe how you compose your shots and color grade? I'm new to the channel so I've only watched this and the Hong Kong video and I really liked the colors and composition in the footage. Not to take anything away from the audio content, your love for audio really shows and makes me more excited about it in general. You two are a talented couple!
Wow, thank you for this inspiration!!! I also had a look at youre website and now i'm just waiting for my new 2tb ssd to by your recordings!!! I think for what you get the price is a little too low but wait until i ve bought😬 Have a nice life!!
Hi Ronald! That could be a another video for sure but right now I'm using Audition and Reaper. Still looking into other options right now because the cloud with $30 a month is adding up.
Hi Kyler! Thank you so much and the F6 is pretty awesome and small. So imagine you attach a pair of binaurals for your soundwalks to your ears or on the side of your bag you are all set! You have so many ambience recordings. Maybe consider creating sound libraries about them. I'm sure your audience would appreciate it even more.
Free To Use Sounds Will do! Thank you so much for you’re tips. I will for sure work on creating a library. I’m a huge fan of the creativity and all of the useful information you both put out. Thank you!
@@NomadicAmbience Ah that is so cool and we didn't even know that you know us! :) New York City Sounds are by far our most downloaded sounds and you have tons of them. So you could start focusing on them. Ocean sounds are always great as well. If you have more questions just let me know. Always happy to help. One of our next upcoming videos will be about how I got started with field recording.
@@NomadicAmbience The next one is coming up on Monday but if you have time to watch more travel videos we have a lot more on our retired channel "Libby and Marcel"! But no pressure. :)
Thank you for the tour of your 'studio'. I love your enthusiasm. I recently bought a Tascam DR-05X and a Deity V-Mic D4 to do field recordings of wildlife, especially birds. I needed a very compact kit and that seemed like it would work. I've only just begun using it, but I hope to use it a lot on a trip I'm leaving on in less than two weeks.
Thank you for watching Stephen. This is an old video and we already have very different setup. The latest one is from Bangkok but just bought the DPA 5100 and a MixPre 10ii. New video coming soon. Just waiting for one more cable. :)
We love your audio and we love the way you shoot video too. Can't wait to see if you make a video about your camera gear. Keep up the great work, your energy and professionalism are inspiring. Thank You, Doug
Hello, I want to ask about the storage - what type of SD cards do you use, capacity and how many of those you bring on your travel - like what's the workflow too, lesser number of cards sounds being back up to hard drives after the whole day, or you just fill up one card after another having like 20 of them for the travel... thanks in advance for your comments!
@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks, Cloud storage is the way, thanks for reminding me this. Every physical storage can be lost or stolen but cloud seams to be very secure.
I see that you're using the Sony MDL 7506 modified cord change. BTW, if you ever need replacement parts for these head phones, a company called Wang Industries makes replacement drivers, ear pads, plug adapters and cords. I find that a lot of people lose the adapter going from 3.5mm to 1/4". So I found a fix for that. A centrifuge tube can store the adapter out of the way. Just tape it to the cord ready at a moments notice.
Thanks for the heads up on mounting a microphone on top of the camera. Never really thought about it would make people uneasy. When you shoot videos outside and if there are people around, do you use a lav mic if you need to record your voice during filming?
My Zoom H6 arrived today along with the Rycote kit for vibration and wind reduction. Heading into nature on an audioventure early in the morning. Thank you for your inspiration.
Hi! H6 hand grip? You mean the one I use in the first couple seconds together with the Deity? That is a Rycote pistol grip if that is the one you are talking about.
@@SquatGhost Oh that is just the tripod for the Insta 360 that we used a couple of times. We sold the camera but kept this tripod. Dealing with 360 footage is not fun at all.
Thanks for the heads up on mounting a microphone on the of the camera. Never really thought about that. When you shoot videos outside, do you only use a lav mic if you need to record your voice during filming?
Hi Rod! Well it depends where do you like to record with it. If you are in a very quiet forest you have to adjust the gain to the point where you can't hear any self noise. You have to regulate quiet low in my opinion. For loud city sounds its great.
Hi Libor! Okay we are going to do it :). Great idea about the software. I use right now Audition and Reaper for the four channel recordings. But I think about stopping to pay for the Adobe cloud. $30 a month is just to much.
Hey... 100% because of your working field tests and Curtis Judds reviews... I bought the Zoom F6. Thank you for actually helping my decision. 32 bit love! What XLR contact mic and bag do you recommend?
That is so cool but sorry for the late reply. So busy right now with traveling around Iceland recording sounds. Some comments aren't showing up. For the contact mic I use the AKG C411pp. I have a whole video from Hong Kong about it. For the bag I use right now the LowePro Tactic aw 450 V2.
I think I found a new favourite channel! Really great information, well presented! I’m looking to improve my audio skills this year. Just ordered the Sennheiser 416 and the Zoom F6!
So interesting, I love how passionate you are about recording!! I would love to see more about the video as well, I'm sure is quite a work to put it together because you have to add the sound that you recorded separately back into the video. Thank you!
Hi! You mean the video for camera gear? We make it for sure :). Yes it’s a lot of work but it doesn’t feel like. Finding all the b roll footage is another task but Libby is really great at it. She is the one editing and filming :).

Hi Chonkorio! I’m glad you found me and I think a Zoom H1n is truly one of the best recorder to start with. Especially if you don’t know where the journey will lead you. You can get this one and a wind protection for it and go out and record. I started only with a zoom H1. If you click here on the channel on videos and the show oldest you can see me on my first recording. It’s just a picture of me with the sound :)

Really helpful video. I am a TH-camr and do mostly gardening vids. But looking at starting another channel for relaxation beach, river stationary shots. You mentioned a cheap DPA microphone but I dodnt get the name,,sounds like ouji,. Can you give me the correct name please and would that work? I have all the camera. ,lenses etc..Just want to get the sound right. Many thanks in advance Marty
Hi Marty, you should watch our updates equipment video. The DPA is not the cheap one. That is a pair of 4060 and cost over $1000. You mean the LOM Usi Pr. But you should look into Blimps and a stereo AB microphone pair. Also check out the video about the Audio Technica 4025.
Hi Pankaj! Thank you so much for your nice comment. Make sure you check out the latest equipment update video. Some of the microphones in this video are already replaced.
You guys are awesome!! I need your help, i use the Zoom H1n for recording waves on the beach, what external mic do you recommend? to get better sound quality . thank you!!
Hello! Thanck you for the video. I had just one question: what microphone was the one "fantastic" to record electromagnetic field and so?? I cannot understand the name and I could not find it. Thank you!
Awesome video and great channel! Subbed. I am interested in using the DPA mics for my car videos on TH-cam and wonder if the 4060 or 4061 would suit me better. Any advice would be greatly apricated. I use zoom recorders and mics as well and they have worked great for me.
Good Morning Kyle. You mean to record the sounds of a car while driving or as a lav for your voice recordings? I just watched one of the videos about the one of your Jeep and what to look at and the sound quality is really great. But if you like to record the sounds of the car like exhaust exterior the 4061 heavy duty are a great choice.
Hi Lukáš! Thank you so much for watching and we thought about it already several times but right now is not the right time. Maybe someday down the road.
Hey Marcel, great video. I'm a subscriber of the sound library, love it... and so great to see you're out so much grabbing more material. Got a quick question for you. I'm about to invest in the DPA 4060 series and wondered what wind protection you preferred. I've been reading about a few options but of course, you're field-tested! Also, nice stereo bar in the video, was that custom?
Hi Nuance! Thank you so much! Oh yes that is great choice and I have the Rycote wind protection and like them more because of the extra soft foam. I had them in grey but I recommend you getting the black once because its less visible. Especially for stealth. The stereo bar is costum and I bought the parts at "small rig"! Do you want me to link you the part list?
I have a question!! Do you have any video comparing the SGH and the SSH zoom capsules with other shotgun mics? I have the Tascam DR-100 MK II and the Zoom H4n, but looking for an upgrade for the H6 plus the F1 or even with the H2n either. By the way, I haven't seen any references of you for the H2n, have you ever had one? Thanks for all the knowledge, loved your content!!!
Your videos and sounds are really interesting. I‘m wondering what recorder/microphone might be a good start for me. I would like to have something more „flexible“ like recording nature sounds but also for street music and also interviews. I feel a bit lost if I should start with a H1n and a lavlier or maybe buy a bit more „expensive“ one like zoom H5 and a tascam DR-10 ... What would you recommend to maybe built also up?
Funky Anna Hi Anna! I make a new video about this matter and if I would start again I would get the Audio Technica 4025. That’s the perfect Allrounder microphone. Especially in situation you just described. With a H4n or H5 you are perfect. :)
@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks for your response! :) Its a good idea to make a video of that issue. I thought I won't make a big mistake if I buying the Zoom-F1 SP with the Shotgun and a extra lavalier. So if I feel to do more with audio I buy a H6 or H8 recorder - something with an XLR Input :)) Actually I have one more question: If I would use an electret microphone ("self powered") Does it work to use an XLR cable to a small 3.5 jack for the F1? :D
Hey Marcel, been looking on a while now great videos and energy. What's your take on the Zoom H3 VR ? Why not Sennheiser Ambeo VR Mic or Rode NTSF-1 ? Pure Portability of the Zoom H3 All-in-one Recorder outweighs the Rode's Extra low noise floor performance i would figure. Have you tried the Binaural Format Conversion? How does it compare to the actual in-ear Binaural Soundman Recordings?
Hi Cheyen! I think they biggest difference is the price. The Sennheiser alone cost $1600 and the Røde is about $1000 what is a huge difference. For the Sennheiser I would need an extra wind protection what comes with it. I actually have my eyes on the OctoMic second order what has 8 capsule. I also talked with a few sound designers and what is interesting about is that they told me that they don't like recording ambisonic with these kind of microphones. They using different methods and microphones from Schoeps. I haven't done the binaural option yet but I will.
@@FreeToUseSounds The octo mic is sweet indeed. would make a great little recording sphere. Aswell the 2nd order ambisonics use 8 Omni directional capsules Compared to 1st order Ambisonic which uses 4 Cardiod mic capsules The reason is, The Zoom H3 has alot of freedom and functionality, Small footprint 4 capsule mic unit with recorder built into base. Would be great with a Go Pro hero 8 or GOPRO Max keep smallest form factor and portability. Does the noise floor interfere with your recordings in very quiet places, Nature Ambience? (now if i could modify the top ambisonic mic piece on the zoom H3 and replace it with a higher quality lower noise ambisonic mic piece instead... we got a serious piece of equipment there ;) Where as my Binaural is not as portable or easily fit into my camera bag with the other gear. The Zoom H3 might be half the overall size and has out of the box stand alone functionality. Binaural Mic setup must have my Zoom F6 connected to it or mounted on camera. As well the Zoom only has 6 inputs so i guess i'm stuck with 4 channel First Order Ambisonics
Cheyen.S Oh if you could bring that on an H3VR that might be interesting to see. :) I still have the Zoom F8n so eight channels would work fine but editing process, size of the files would probably bring my Mac Book Air to the max. For quiet nature sounds the H3VR is getting noisy so you have to lower the gain until you don’t hear any noise anymore.
Hi Ken. That depends on the country. I shipped with regular post from Singapore to the UK and it took 7 days. Big hassle with DHL. Also DHL from Spain to the UK and that size of package cost over $200. To much.
Hi Marcel, like your video and you have a nice smile~ One question I have is that compared to the small Omni stereo set up (Usi pro and 4060), what is the difference in the stereo method as ORTF or XY with large mic ( for example pencil condenser), will there be some difference in using scenario or recording distance? As small mic like DPA 4060 is also a good LAV mic if I remember it right. Also about the WILDTRONICS STEREO MONO DISH, makes me wonder one question, will there be a significant difference between this 3 mic microphone vs a standard m/s method microphone? Would be great if you have opinions about my question~
Ah thank you Chenny! Always staying positive and happy! I personally never recorded sounds in an ORTF setup or don't have experience with these kind of microphones to set this up! I do found a great article about the difference so I forward you to the DPA website. www.dpamicrophones.com/mic-university/stereo-recording-techniques-and-setups I really hope I could help you with that question. DPA are great as lavs for sure. I think the biggest difference for the Wildtronics and regular MS is the range. With the shield I can capture sounds that are much further away. But for instance I would love to have MS set like the Schoeps in a Cyclone. The quality is outstanding but I have to put at least $6000 on the table for this. :) Little risky if you travel that much and something happen to the mic.

Hello! Just happened to chance across your videos and I love the content that you are putting out :) Just wanted to ask if you had any recommendations for a more entry to enthusiast level for a versatile recorder for filmmaking!
Hi Jonathan, Zoom H6 is probably one of the best entry field recorder you can get out there. I just wished Zoom could finally release a new version of it since this modell is already over 5 years old. Besides this you can check out the H4n or H5n.
@@FreeToUseSounds thanks! Was looking at those options as well as the sony pcm d10, are the differences between the preamps that big to justify the absence of xlr inputs? Im really just starting on audio so its really confusing haha
@@jonathansim8725 You are talking about the D10 or D100? I would love to have the D100 just because its an amazing recorder and highly recommended throughout the field recording community. I did never use the D10. I think not having XLR could be a problem in certain situation like if you need a boom or wireless lavs that you want to connect into a recorder.
Hi guys! Thanks for your channel and all your passion! I have a question: I bought a zoom h6 recorder and im interesting to record ambient and foleys. What do you recommend me for this options? I looking for a clear and deep sound, whitout noise. And one more thing, I need something small, because I want record in the summit of mountains. Thank for all!
Hi Daniel! Thank you so much! Oh well that all depends on your budget. Recording sounds in the summit sounds to me like heavy winds. So you would need wind protection but that also depends on the microphone you decide.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks for you answer. I don't much care about the budget. My goal is capture de "silence" of the summits. What microphone will use you? And for records foleys? Thanks again for you answer.
@@danielmartinsaezdeparayuel2675 Well I would use the the microphones I have. If budget don't matters go with the Sennheiser MKH 8020 or 8040. Together with either a Rycote Cyclone or the Cinela Albert you are good to go. For foley and sound effects check out Deity S Mic 2S what is really nice and I use but also Rode has an affordable NTG series.

I don't use the F1 anymore but I think it was possible. I wouldn't recommend this recorder anymore. Its too bulky, noisy and also the plastic from the battery slot broke and makes it unusable.
Hi Marcel, I’ve just subscribed to your channel. Excellent stuff. I only have a Sony PCM D-100 at the moment but feel it’s just a bit too bulky for the stealth recordings. I was thinking of buying an Olympus LS P4 to use with my LOM mics and electrostatic detectors along with my contacts mics too. Do you have any opinion on this device for field recording or should I just put up with the extra bulk of the Sony? Cheers. Mike
Hi Mike! Oh wow, I wish I would have that Sony! Its such an amazing recorder. I'm not sure if you where satisfied listening to the Olympus audio quality if you have already that Sony beast. I wouldn't mind the size of the Sony at all. Its about how to store it. If you use a comfortable bag I'm sure you are all set. Have you seen the video about my stealth recording on the market and airport? I also use the Zoom F8n for stealth inside the camera bag. With that saying I would save the money on the second recorder. I hope that was helpful?
@@FreeToUseSounds thanks for getting back so quick. Ok well you've saved me some money 🙂. My main issue was not being able to start the Sony without opening the bag. Not good if the weather was bad. Anyway I found a wired remote available for the Sony which is a game changer. Thanks for the input 🤗
Awesome video! I want to record with a stereo set of USI pros and was wondering if the F1 is a good option to record to if I plug it directly into the F1 instead of into the XY mic as you showed in the video? Is there a difference in noise floor between the two inputs (F1 directly or into the XY capsile)?
Hi Paul. You would need the 3.5 version to plug it direct into the Mic In. Hmm the F1 is a noisy recorder in general and I personally don’t use it anymore. The plastic broke from the battery input.
Hi Edwin. Hmm Something I personally wouldn't do with a H3VR but it could work in the binaural setting. What you need is a portable hand grip. Search for 'Portable Recorder Suspension HD". Rycote has something. Also Movo has the Mc Grip. I think that could work because it has the screw you would need for the H3VR.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thank you. I’ll be getting the Rycote kit but I’ll also look around for a different binaural recording solution. The H3-VR gets a lot of attention where I take it and random people want to grab it by the windscreen (a little awkward). But I wonder if the Roland mics would work for the Zoom H1N to avoid carrying the H6
Hi very interesting, what microphone would you use if you record street sounds from a motorcycle or bicycle, having as a premise, that record sounds only in front of the handlebars, to neutralize as much as possible the noise of the engine, or the noise of the bicycle, or the breathing of the driver. thanks in advance
Well. Your main problem is wind. So you need to find a way to protect the microphone from the wind. So in that case I would use a omni and hide in inside the handle bar or behind the wind shield. But what about vibrations? So you need to think about this as well.
@@FreeToUseSounds Hi, but the omni, records backwards too, that is my noises, and the noises of the bicycle,,,, shouldn't a cardiode be better, ? about wind I have diferent dead cat and foam made by me
Hey friend. You advised me to grab the clippy mics... Thanks. I'll will be ordering them soon. One question. Would it be better to have cardiod or Omni mics to produce a good stereo image?

hello from Uruguay, I want to try and start recording birds, would you be so kind to suggest a cheap equipment to start? I am old, and just want to record the songs of the birds I take photos of, but my Iphone is not really good for it. I need something better. I would dearly appreciate any help. The channels that talk about this subject sugest equipments that are around 2000 or more usd, which is for us a lot, (plus 1000 in customs duties) . I loved your channel, I am a fan of sounds as well ! Thank you and good vibes from distant Uruguay.
Hi Daniela, Interesting! I'm curious to know which channel suggested such a budget setup. We recently made a video about a kit that costs around $1000 and is packed with excellent resources for getting started in field recording. However, if you're just beginning, you certainly don't need to spend that much. A good quality handheld recorder should be more than sufficient for starting out and these can be found for less than $500 with wind protection. Hope this helps!
Your videos are amazing! I have a couple of questions (as a beginner)... Is there a reason you prefer the Deity S-mic 2S rather than the longer S-mic 2 for foley sounds? I'd have thought the S-mic 2 would be better as it rejects off-axis sound better but maybe that can be a disadvantage too? Also, what is the little stand you're using at 16:06? Many thanks! :)
Thank you so much for watching we are actually planning on making a new video. We have more equipment already and some that are featured in this video are long gone. :) About the Deity. It came out new when I got it and it seemed more handy to me. I still have it but I don't really use it anymore. Oh that little stand was the tripod for a 360 camera we bought. We sold this camera but kept the tripod.
No problem :) Yes the H3Vr is a great for 360 but I personally use the recorder in louder environments. If the wetland and forest is loud its nice but also make sure you get wind protection for it. Its not with in the box.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks again. So the H3Vr is not good for recording in quiet environments? The H6 seems to pick up good ambient audio but I have nothing to compare it to. I will add it to the growing list of kit on the 'maybe' list ;-)
@@TheDevonOutdoorsman Well, its alright but I would rather use a different ambisonic microphone if I had ond or go for a double MS MKH30/8040 rig inside a Rycote Cyclone. But that is a serious setup of course and if I only had an H3VR I would also record with it in a quiet environment. Its better to record something than nothing . :)
@@FreeToUseSounds mostly mono and I use xy to record stereo... But I thought maybe It's better to have a mic that capable of both together and I decide in proccessing... But I don't know if ssh6 mid mic is as good as sgh6 or not.
Ha Ha Ha :). I think if you like to start out do it how I did it. A Zoom H1n is great for the beginning. If you like what you are doing and hearing you can then start selling your tv or couch. :)
Thank you both for putting together this video! Super informative as always. I'm curious about your experience using the Zoom H6 - were you able to get good recordings of quiet and intimate sounds without too much preamp noise with it? And did you notice any differences in the noise floor when upgrading to the Zoom F6 at all? I have the H6 as well, and I've noticed some fairly prominent white noise if I try to record quiet ambiences.
Hi Respin! Thank you so much for watching! Oh yes that is the case. The quieter the environment the more noise you get with the H6. If I'm in a room like an empty parking garage I go to the closest source that creates a noise. For example an air condition or wind in a tree just to overlay the noise of the H6. The F6 or the F8n are clearly much better recorders with more technique in it but to a higher price. Also it depends on what microphones you are going to use with it. Sometimes in the past I used the XY microphones and clipped it to the F8n to record sounds. That worked well. With the F6 you don't have the option. I never really cared about preamp noise because I love recording and for made it work to get really good recordings with it. Without the H6 I wouldn't have created the website Free To Use Sounds.
@@FreeToUseSounds Gotcha, thanks so much for the detailed reply! Placing the recorder near a consistent sound source seems like a great solution to the H6 noise - guess I'll have to think more about placement. Definitely agree though that the H6 is a great tool to start out with for field recording. Haven't looked back since getting mine!
Great video! I have a question: I'm looking for a recorder suitable for capturing very quiet sounds such as clothes ruffling. With my (very old) Zoom H4n I find the noise floor is too loud. Do you have any recommendations for something under €600? Do you think the Zoom H5 would be good enough? Thanks!
Hello, thanks for the video. Which recorder would you recommend for a beginner who is looking to record sounds (mainly short taps, not ambiences) to be used for music/sound design? I am looking for something that is relatively cheap or mid level price-wise. Thank you.
Hi! I think the Zoom H1n is what you are looking for. That is the one I started with and later got the H6. Next week the Zoom H8 is coming out so I'm sure other recorders will be on sale.
I do have a question actually, I have a zoom h2n and the plan was to capture nature sounds, especially rain, but the problem is I don't know how to protect the recorder from the rain, being under something like a roof or a metal terrace ads sounds to the recording I don't want present, but if I just have It out in the open field then it will get damaged, what would you advice ?
There is nothing you can really do with this recorder but you could use something like Rycote Duck Rain Cover geni.us/ftusraincover or Cinela has the so called "Cinela Kelly Rain Cover". I'm sure it can help but for only an H2n it could be a hit or miss.
@@FreeToUseSounds okay i’ll look into it, what recorder would you recommend then for the type of recording i want to do as well as whatever accessory to go along with it ?
@@prior2915 Absolutely no problem. I just got my Schoeps mics and I'm in a good mood haha :) Okay, I'm not sure where you are or what you have available, but I've made a budget gear list for you to choose or compare from. geni.us/ftusrainsounds However, you should also check out Mic Booster's clippies. These are Omnis and the 3.5 stereo jack can be connected to the H2n. Make sure that you also order a windshield. The problem is that with rain comes the wind. So you have to find a hiding place. You want to record in stereo because I already have an idea of what you want to do with these recordings. I've included a few options. If you decide on a matched pair, you need a stereo bar plus windshield and XLR cables (2). ALWAYS check the diameter of the microphones for windshields. Another affordable company is Oktava. Look for model MK-012-01 MSP2. It's a great stereo pair and Rycote has a basket for that too. My favorite microphone is the AT 4025 because of its clarity(already comes with cables) and versatility. I have a video about it on this channel. The cheaper brother is the 8022. If you have any further questions, just let us know :)
Love your videos and thank you for sharing your adventures! :D Quick question: Have you recorded different ambiences in a single room (just at different locations within a single space). I know there are various audio projects that utilize this technique to make their voice actors sound like they are moving in a room. I think it's called convolution reverb or impulse responses?
Hi Zeroth! I do record room tone all the time and one big library I have published is from the Denver East High School! Today I actually publish a high school volleyball sound library from there. To create the convolution reverb I would need an impact like a gunshot, exploding balloon or clapping with my hands very loud. I haven't done anything like this yet. So I normally only record the room and the post production sound engineers who are using these recordings create the soundscape with it.
Great video yours. As a wildlife photographer I was wondering if it might be good for me to buy the Zoom H6. My aim is to integrate nature sounds into my wildlife videos, maybe when I'm waiting for an animal or when I walking in a woodland, and stuff like that. But in the market there are tons of equipments and I'm a little bewilderedby many options and I wouldn't make mistakes. So in your opinion could the H6 a good options? Wich microphone coul I buy instead of the LOM USI (I see they are relly good)? Thanks and sorry for the long question. Cheers. Giuseppe
Hi Guiseppe, I already made an update video and have another video planed since I'm not using most of the kit in this video. Now I use Schoeps, Sennheiser, Rycote Cyclone, Cinela Albert etc... For sound bits its fine but if you want really good audio for your videos you need equipment that is resistant to wind, rain, humidly etc.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks!!! Actually I didn't think about those aspects, I mean wind, rain. Uhmmm so do you think it should be better look for other stuff?
@@GiuseppeGessa Oh yes but I just saw your other comment. A hydrophone is for underwater recordings and not for rain. So in order to protect your microphones or recorder you need water proof bags. Rycote and Cinela have rain protection for the Blimps
@@FreeToUseSounds Ok, thanks again for the advice. Sorry if I take advantage of your patience, but what do you think about the Zoom H6 and H8? The last one I saw is only a little bit more expensive of the H6, so could it be better? Maybe for further specialized uses?
@@GiuseppeGessa I made a video about it. Zoom H6 VS Zoom H8 so feel free to check it out. Also Tascam has the X8 now this is an option too. I don't have H8 and H6 anymore because I have no space in my luggage.

Hi Kyler! Thank you so much and the F6 is pretty awesome and small. So imagine you attach a pair of binaurals for your soundwalks to your ears or on the side of your bag you are all set! You are very welcome Anna and thank for taking the time watching the video.

I have a couple 64GB and 32GB cards. I back them up to two 4TB hard drives and also upload the original sounds to a cloud storage as master backup.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks, Cloud storage is the way, thanks for reminding me this. Every physical storage can be lost or stolen but cloud seams to be very secure.
@@leemski That is correct.
I don't have them anymore.
Where can i see a list of the equipment, and is there a beginners guid to audio recording?
I have all our current equipment right here. www.freetousesounds.com/field-recording-equipment/

Great Video! How is the self noise on the Zoom H3 VR? I'm looking to buy one but want to make sure it has a low noise floor.
Hi Rod! Well it depends where do you like to record with it. If you are in a very quiet forest you have to adjust the gain to the point where you can't hear any self noise. You have to regulate quiet low in my opinion. For loud city sounds its great.

@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks... yeah a list would be great. Keep up the great work!
I don't have any reference to this sorry.
So if I feel to do more with audio I buy a H6 or H8 recorder - something with an XLR Input :))
Actually I have one more question: If I would use an electret microphone ("self powered") Does it work to use an XLR cable to a small 3.5 jack for the F1? :D
Oh yes that is one idea and for the 3,5 I highly recommend you checking out the LOM Usi micro with the 3,5 mm choice. You can use them with the F1.
You guys are awesome. Pure awesome. Let me know next time you come to Shanghai!
Hi Jeremy! Nice to see you here!! Oh that would be such an honor! Of course we let you know when we go and please stay safe out there.
Aswell the 2nd order ambisonics use 8 Omni directional capsules
Compared to 1st order Ambisonic which uses 4 Cardiod mic capsules
The reason is, The Zoom H3 has alot of freedom and functionality, Small footprint 4 capsule mic unit with recorder built into base. Would be great with a Go Pro hero 8 or GOPRO Max keep smallest form factor and portability.
Does the noise floor interfere with your recordings in very quiet places, Nature Ambience?
(now if i could modify the top ambisonic mic piece on the zoom H3 and replace it with a higher quality lower noise ambisonic mic piece instead... we got a serious piece of equipment there ;)
Where as my Binaural is not as portable or easily fit into my camera bag with the other gear.
I have a quick question and more than likely answered;) How do you catalogue and store on the move?
We have lots of hard drives with us for the audio equipment but if you ask for bags, we will make a video about it.
regular post office for registered international mail is always slow, better to use ups or dhl.
Hi Ken. That depends on the country. I shipped with regular post from Singapore to the UK and it took 7 days. Big hassle with DHL. Also DHL from Spain to the UK and that size of package cost over $200. To much.
Hi Marcel, like your video and you have a nice smile~
One question I have is that compared to the small Omni stereo set up (Usi pro and 4060), what is the difference in the stereo method as ORTF or XY with large mic ( for example pencil condenser), will there be some difference in using scenario or recording distance? As small mic like DPA 4060 is also a good LAV mic if I remember it right.
Also about the WILDTRONICS STEREO MONO DISH, makes me wonder one question, will there be a significant difference between this 3 mic microphone vs a standard m/s method microphone?
Would be great if you have opinions about my question~
Ah thank you Chenny! Always staying positive and happy! I personally never recorded sounds in an ORTF setup or don't have experience with these kind of microphones to set this up! I do found a great article about the difference so I forward you to the DPA website.
www.dpamicrophones.com/mic-university/stereo-recording-techniques-and-setups
I really hope I could help you with that question.

@@jonathansim8725 You are talking about the D10 or D100? I would love to have the D100 just because its an amazing recorder and highly recommended throughout the field recording community.

Lom Usi Pro and Clippies for that price but you can get the Rode M5 stereo pair for under $200 as well.

Thank you so much!
Can I use zoom f1 with binaural roland mics pluged in directly into its 3.5 mic-input jack, or only with those detachable zoom mic capsules?
I don't use the F1 anymore but I think it was possible. I wouldn't recommend this recorder anymore. Its too bulky, noisy and also the plastic from the battery slot broke and makes it unusable.
Also the way how you can control the gain is terrible and not time conform anymore.

Awesome video! I want to record with a stereo set of USI pros and was wondering if the F1 is a good option to record to if I plug it directly into the F1 instead of into the XY mic as you showed in the video? Is there a difference in noise floor between the two inputs (F1 directly or into the XY capsile)?
Hi Paul. You would need the 3.5 version to plug it direct into the Mic In. Hmm the F1 is a noisy recorder in general and I personally don’t use it anymore. The plastic broke from the battery input.
Your videos make me want to be a sound reccordist hh.. always wait for your awesome journey..
Ah thank you so much! Its a real passion so grab a recorder and start recording. :)
this is solid!
Thank you Dave! Much apprechiated.
Thanks for the vid! Is there any way to use the H3-VR as handheld? I’ve taken mine on walks but I haven’t found a good shock mount for it
@@edwincov Yes they work. I used them with the H1 back in the days.
@@FreeToUseSounds Hi, but the omni, records backwards too, that is my noises, and the noises of the bicycle,,,, shouldn't a cardiode be better, ? about wind I have diferent dead cat and foam made by me
@@BUENOSAIRES4K Yes that is true. An omni records almost all the space so in that case you can try a cardioid lavalier.
@@FreeToUseSounds thanks buddy!
Pleasure! :)
Hey friend. You advised me to grab the clippy mics... Thanks. I'll will be ordering them soon. One question. Would it be better to have cardiod or Omni mics to produce a good stereo image?
Omnis :)
@@FreeToUseSounds thank you so so much! I appreciate you!
Love it guys! thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching! :)
How ! great review ! and you're talking about Deity product... i'll buy they HF diversity product soon... Friend of me say it's the best deal at the moment ;)
Hi Abel! Thank you for watching. :) Yes the Deity are great and you can't make anything wrong. If you want I can give you Deity's direct contact. :)
Awesome insights and immediately useful tips. You guys are great! 👍🏿😎
So glad to hear that Tom. Also we made an updated equipment video so feel free to check this out as well.
This is an awesome video
Thank you! I made an updated equipment video and tomorrow I have a new one coming out.
What would you recommend as a beginner microphone kit? Something like the ntg5 or the s-mic 2s? Or something else?
Hi Bjoern. What would you like to record? Also make sure you watch the updated equipment video.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thank you for your tipp for your newer video. Ill check it out.
It would be my first more professional microphone. I thought about the ntg5 or diety s-mic 2, both have a kit and are quite good quality for beginners. But maybe they’re to good for a beginner and I should safe more money? I just need an allround microphone for voice, music, indoor, outdoor, sounds.
@@anyuisbjoern The best allrounder microphone is the AT 4025 or the cheaper 8022. I made a video about the AT 4025. All on the channel.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thank you so much! Sounds like you prefer this stereo-microphones over a mono shotgun as allrounder?
@@anyuisbjoern Oh yes. For the things I record stereo is much more important then mono.
hello from Uruguay, I want to try and start recording birds, would you be so kind to suggest a cheap equipment to start? I am old, and just want to record the songs of the birds I take photos of, but my Iphone is not really good for it. I need something better. I would dearly appreciate any help. The channels that talk about this subject sugest equipments that are around 2000 or more usd, which is for us a lot, (plus 1000 in customs duties) . I loved your channel, I am a fan of sounds as well ! Thank you and good vibes from distant Uruguay.
Hi Daniela,
Interesting!
Can you help me to choose a mic for audio recording at extreme cold weather? My NTG-3 don't work at minus temperatures.
I can't because I don't know any microphones that I used that are good in freezing temperatures.
@@FreeToUseSounds, many thanks fpr your answer. And what about mics with built in heating. As I recall, you mantioned something like that?
@@Paulgul3 Oh yes the Wildtronics SAAM has inbuilt heating but that won't help in high winds.
How do you work with the AmbiX Files in the Daw?
Nice Video like to see all your gear :)
I'm editing my four channel recordings in Reaper.
subscribed. Hope to see you on the road somewhere!
Sounds Like Van Spirit Someday! I look out for your van :)
Sorry, me again....would the H3 be a good option for recording 360 outdoor sound e.g. woodland/forests etc?
Hi. I consider to buy a shotgun capsule for my recorder, what's your suggestion, sgh6 or ssh6?
Do you want to record in mono or stereo?
@@FreeToUseSounds mostly mono and I use xy to record stereo... But I thought maybe It's better to have a mic that capable of both together and I decide in proccessing... But I don't know if ssh6 mid mic is as good as sgh6 or not.
I would like to know the starter kit for sound design..because your budget forces me to sell my apartment:)
Thanks!
For under $600 you get get the new H8 when it comes out. But for these kind of sound effects I would maybe go for a shotgun microphone as well.
@@FreeToUseSounds Brilliant, thanks! :)
@@MattDoesSound My pleasure!
I love you both❤
Hello, thanks for the video.
Next week the Zoom H8 is coming out so I'm sure other recorders will be on sale.
hi I wonder holder of zoomh6. Is there a link of it?
Rycote has a handheld shock mount. I made a video about it too.
@@FreeToUseSounds btw I started to record field and some sound with my h6. That you I m following you.
@@prior2915 Well, you have many options. Whats your budget and I make you a list
@@FreeToUseSounds really wow I appreciate that ! Honestly i’d have to say around $500 and under, moneys a little tight right now
@@prior2915 Absolutely no problem. I just got my Schoeps mics and I'm in a good mood haha :) Okay, I'm not sure where you are or what you have available, but I've made a budget gear list for you to choose or compare from. geni.us/ftusrainsounds
However, you should also check out Mic Booster's clippies.
Quick question: Have you recorded different ambiences in a single room (just at different locations within a single space).
