What a great cellist. The intensity of pathos in this work tends to result in the cellist using too much bowing pressure when the atmosphere calls for sotto voce. In that respect, I like his interpretation more than either Capucon or Rostropovich. He really does a great job.
In holding back respectfully for the cellist, and hiding behind the legato pedal a bit, the pianist misses some of her shots at Rachmaninov’s lyricism. But this is not an easy piano part; and you have Yuja and Richter making it look much easier than it really is. But she also drifts a little below the required speed here and there, which is not allowed when accompanying, and she doesn’t bring the piano’s voice forward enough when Rach hands her the opportunity; maybe she’s lost in the beauty of the piece, but that’s not allowed. Rach was a virtuoso pianist: he’s going to make sure that the piano demands its fair share of the argument. Anyway, IMO, the cello sonata is one of the greatest works Rachmaninov wrote; it deserves to be as well known as the Kreutzer is from Beethoven. Well, this is dragging a bit; I’m going back to Capucon, which I think is the best performance. As much as I love the dramatic intensity from the Russians, the cellist has to really sing the melodic subjects with a round tone and a full bow without too much scratching at the hilt. This andante is dragging too much. Back to R and R!

这么长的曲子,音乐家怎能不看谱,全都记在脑中呢?
所以音乐家一定要有超强的记忆力,也一定是不同凡响的天才。
wtf the ads
By the way, can I do it better? Of course I can’t! Musicians, what do you think? Trolls can go ‘shove it’, but I doubt they’re here on this site!
