- Ryuken Ishida is the last & final pure blooded quincy within BLEACH, that is until the TYBW arc and the return of Yhwach and his quincy empire. In this video I breakdown and analyse the mystery surrounding Ryuken, including his disdain for his Quincy heritage, his dysfunctional relationship with his son Uryu, and his friendship with Isshin. Through Isshin and Ryuken's friendship we learn a lot about his past, via the events of everything but the rain, I will also be going over this amazing BLEACH flashback arc so that we can understand his character better.

I really like the contrast of Ryuken being such a cold and cynical individual, while being a doctor. I get the feeling that he thought his Quincy heritage brought him nothing but misfortune, so he turned his back on it and instead dedicated his life to saving the living. I do hope his role is expanded upon in the TYBW.

I feel like masaki died and he knew why. He couldn't bring himself to serve a king like that and went rogue. 🤷🏾♂️. Waited YEARS for that POS to come back and Auswalen some more people. And forged that arrow. That's definitely cynical and pin pointed
One thing strikes me about Ryuken, and it's why Ywach completely overlooked him despite knowing he killed the former's wife. At first it felt a bit odd, but then I realized that Ywach literally cannot comprehend a Quincy hating him for stealing a loved one's life via the Aüschwälen. To Ywach, it is the greatest honor for any Quincy to give back power to him at the cost of their life, so any Quincy planning a long revenge is foreign to him, and that was his downfall.
Yea. To quincy, Ywach is their literal god and father. To give back their power is the most deepest honor of them all to most. Even if loved ones dies, to some Quincy it would be an honor.
The thing about Ryuken is he doesn't even care about being a Quincy in the first place. He's priority has always been his family, So he felt no attachments to Ywhach and killing him is no issue for him.
Ryuken Ishida is a traitor.
I think the reason he keeps all his quincy crosses around has to do heavily with something he said early on. Don't worry about the dead that's a shinigamis job, instead work to protect the living. After all if you pay attention you never see a hollow attack at the hospital.
I find it interesting how both Ryuken and Isshin practically no longer use their respective powers, but instead focus on helping the living (with Karakura Hospital and Kurosaki Clinic, respectively)
It's great that in the end, despite the turbulent and aloof relationship Ryuken and Uryu shared, it has started to heal and now Ryuken has his son covered financially for his education with Ichigo. His not objecting to his son's friendship with an ally of 'enemies' so signifies the new era of relations between Shinigami and Quincy in the postwar period. In the end you can't blame Ryuken for his quirks given the many tragedies he endured. Him saving lives as a doctor is a bonus.

You can flame me too ashes for saying this but it be 😎 cool to be changed or readaptated in a way for Ryuken to have a ultimate Quincy holy showdown with Jugram like when he's about to stab Uryu Ryuken comes and it's turns into the Ultimate Showdown of the Quincy Enemy vs The Last Grand Quincy Title holder Volt-Standings with Shrifts in all in a all out battle.

I always thought Ryuken hated the Quincy because their existence ultimately caused Misaki to die since he initially loved and cared for her before she met Isshin. But then again maybe his disdain for them furthered increased when Katagiri also died because of the Quincy. To him the Quincy took almost, if not everything, he ever loved and cared about all for Juha Bach's revival.

Profit doesn't always mean money. It simply means having SOMETHING to gain from the exchange. And given what happened with both Misaki, AND Kanae Katagiri, I can see how he might view being a loyal quincy as a bad deal.
As he said: "I chose my words carefully" and "There's no profit in it". These 2 lines likely mean more than what was implied in the video.
I agree completely and basically mentioned that before, great take.
In original Japanese he just straight up said "money" not "profit". English translator think they are being a smart ass for changing dialogues.

There’s a line in ep 122 of the dub when Ryuken is training Uryu, telling him to carry out the plan.
Though there is no such line mentioned in the sub or manga.
It would be amazing if said plan referred to working to bring about Yhwach’s downfall.
Considering Ryuken completely hid from Uryu the existence of the other Quincies and the fact Ywach killed Ishida's mother until TYBW Arc I highly doubt that

If you notice, when uryu got to heco mundo he he no longer claims he's the last quienci, instead saying 'tell aizen to be afraid of quiencies'. I think it foreshadows the tybw.
That moment Uryu is about to get pwned by that menos and Rykuen's stfu arrow cuts it's tongue off from a far.. I still remember the song playing as if it was yesterday.. such an impactful entrance.
Kubo should have given Isshin and Ryuken one fight TOGETHER against a Quincy, like a Naruto/Sasuke moment. That would have been amazing.
Right, and show off more of what Isshin can do as well; not once have we ever seen the shikai of his Engetsu or the bankai, at all.

I think bleach coming back may create a lot of interest in these characters. It may give them spinoff manga or maybe even filler arcs or spinoff anime. In this case then having some wasted potential may be a good thing

I love the theme Ishida has of turning warriors into healers and mentors after they retire through the main duo's fathers. Archetypal in some way I cant explain.
I'm really looking forward in the anime series regarding Ryuken's involvement and somehow a closure between them and Uryu regarding their family fiasco.
I hope we see more of soken Ishida and since Kubo is closely involved in the anime I'm sure there's a lot of plot points that will be expanded upon, your videos are a great help to remember this amazing series and great for waiting the rebirth of bleach! Greetings from México!
For me Ryuken Ishida sadly was a wasted character in Bleach in terms of potential. I think the whole trope of absent fathers is used too much to a point where its used an excuse for being a jerk and being relatively useless in such a good story. Kudos to Tite Kubo for at least giving them a scene in the Thousand Year Blood War Arc and it had merit.
Well abandonment does lead some people to feel reserved and selfish. Not speaking from personal experience, but from people I remember from school.

Can you please explain why Ryuken has never been affected by Ashwahlen? Is it because he’s a pure blood and never accepted part of Ywach’s soul?

Cuz the Auhwahlen 9 years ago was only used to affect non-pure blooded Quincy and Ryuken is a pure blooded one. As for why he was not affected by Auswahlen during the TYBW arc, I dunno. It was not explained or maybe Yhwach didn't target him.
Soken Ishida probably hate his father because you understand during his flashback that Ryuken always fight Hollows and she felt alone that probably why he also hates quincy.
I would love to have an anime exclusive ending directed by Kubo in the way he really wanted and not the rushed mess of a conclusion we got in the manga.
Ryuken and Uryu back to back working together would’ve been so cool
I saw a video of a guy that gave Schrifts to schriftless Quincys. I forget the name it was but he gave a schrift to Ryuken and it allowed him to see an attack just once and he could see all the weak points in the attack. So if he were fighting Juha he could see that a way to beat his all mighty is Aizens Kyoka Suigetsu and uryu's antithesis which Uryu actually used in the final battle against Juha and Ichigo but nobody noticed.
I really hope that TBYW anime adaptation will change/add some things, especially for the two fathers. In addition to saving their kids in crisis, they both had their own good reasons for joining this war (in particular Ryuuken), just handing over the arrow was a huge disappointment. Hope to see him go to aid Uryu and battle Haschwalth as THE LAST TRUE QUINCY (while for Isshin wouldn't be bad on Ichigo's side against Yhwach, putting him back together, in a similar scene as it was against Aizen).

I would have liked to understand why Ryuken wasn't involved with the Sternritter. It seems like he was part of a different faction, and i'm not sure if they ever went into that. There must have been two quincy factions, so it would have been interesting to see that expanded on some.
Not every single Quincy clan or person liked or cared about Ywhach nor did they join the attacks against the Shinigami
After watching both cours ryuken knew Ywach would eventually come back and didn’t want Uryu involved he clearly knows how evil Ywach was and how his family was an enemy to his cause through Uruyus grandfather

i was confused when the final arc came out... i thought the quincies were wiped out... so where did ywach get his quincy army? did he make them? or were they always quincy? haven't read it in years

@@craigime the quincy army is made of dead quincies. Steadily , some selected Quincies had secretly gone to form their HQs for the return of Yhwach , an example is Bazz-B been a kid during the time of the last attempt from Yhwach , a 1000 years ago.
Ryuken wasn’t exactly lying when he said there’s no profit in being a Quincy. Even if he became a multibillionaire, it would all go to waste if he was purged or drafted by Yhwach (spelling?).
I felt like Ryuken should’ve showed up in the battle against Aizen. That was another opportunity for him to shine too.

Ryuken as a character is a great symbol for how Kubo failed to flesh out the concept of Quincies, and how much potential he's missed out on in TYBW. That silver arrow shit was so contrived, it was an offense to Ryuken as a character.
Hope this theme comes back for TYBW
I see his role as very missed, given how Yhwach is very likely part of WHY Ryuken stopped caring. Not simply due to him being why his wife died but due to the so drastic shift in what quincies were and how they operated because of Yhwach. I too like others hope to see his role expanded on, since I could easily see the two of them having at least some form of stand off and conversation over a proper fight, and it could further expand on the idea that Yhwach is why Ryuken no longer wanted to be a quincy after losing Masaki, his mother and wife given 2 of them are Yhwach's doing. But also while Ryuken is rather cold he still has a clear ideal clash with Yhwach as well.
So he and Gin have a similar persona and look. Awesome.
Looks wise I thought he was the coolest. Was always hoping for some latent skill/power (or hitsugaya's dad) they would reveal, but alas too many good characters in this series for them to do that.
He said there is no profit. Profit and money are not necessarily the same although it is often seen as synonymous.

When he said there's is no profit from it. It's not just about money, it's about benefits of being a quincy. Being a quincy means you don't belong in the realm of the humans, has the ability to kill off souls and because of that ability you are an enemy to soul reapers, not because the soul reapers would feel threatened but because quincies can only bring off imbalance. There's no pro about becoming a quincy except for having special powers that are not really so special but is just rather damaging to the balance in the bleach universe.
Grand! I've always wondered how Uryu managed to survive the Auswahlen, granted that Ryuken Ishida is a pureblood Quincy and his mother, Kanae Katagiri, was a mixed-blood Quincy who didn't survive the Auswahlen. Is there any explanation for that?
Because Uryu was special as the only one who has survived Aushwalen this is why Yhwach said he is his successor

What I feel like why Ryuken didn't fought Ywach in the end is a theory of mine that he rather had Ishida avenge his mother than himself.
The other one is kinda bad but I feel like kinda true... Remeber that we had this "meme" of Ichigo VS Aizen = Urahara wins? It could have been the same with Yhawach if Ryuken would have just showed up and shoot him and it's over, but it also wouldn't have made sense to make the arrow to just weaken him because that wouldn't excatly justify the process of making the arrow. Maybe in the anime instead if Ichigo & Uryu VS Yhawach we could get an Ichigo & Uryu & Isshin & Ryuken VS Yhawach instead if the dads just coming in saying something and just watching.

But at the same time he didn't forget what happened to his wife and stayed loyal even planned for yhwach defeat
I think once Ryuuken understood the circumstances of Kanae's death (he is by no means unobservant), and how the Auswahlen affected both her and Masaki, he must have also realised that Uryuu was somewhat special for surviving it as a gemischt Quincy and was using tough parenting as a way to prepare him for the inevitable battle against Yhwach. Ryuuken must have known about or been involved with the Vandenreich in some capacity (either himself or through Soken as a proxy) to have known about the Stil Silver and it's effects and uses. The Quincy cloak he wears in the big reveal panel with Isshin is pretty similar to the uniform of Uryuu and Haschwalth, too.
Ryuuken likely didn't want Uryuu involved with the Quincy as he would have been aware of potential as a descendant of the Ishida bloodline making him a target for Yhwach. Uryuu, however, is a stubborn character just like his father and thrives in adversity, so once Ryuuken realised Uryuu's intentions on becoming the next successor of the Quincy (regardless of his gemischt status), he acted cold and harsh to force Uryuu to grow to his full strength, and allowing Uryuu to avenge Kanae was his final act of acceptance for Uryuu's choices.
I think this turning point in the final chapters where Uryuu avenges Kanae by giving Ichigo an opening to kill Yhwach is also a turning point in his and his father's relationship; it is what then pushes it to grow to the point where Uryuu not only accepts Ryuuken's profession (that he previously resented and rejected) but goes on to become a doctor himself. By preserving the spirit realms and the balance of the dead and the living, he has closed that chaotic path in his life and now (mostly) focusses on the living as Ryuuken wanted him to. A nice parallel, especially as they both now contribute to both sides of the cycle, saving living souls whilst also cleansing those that have passed.
I should point out that this is mostly speculative as we really didn't get much info about the Ishida family past and relationships aside from EBTR but it's one of the things I'm hoping the most that gets elaborated on in the anime.

I do hope Cour 2 or further ones add a little bit more scenes to Ryuken, especially about him and his wife. I love Ryuken and the idea that, despite following traditions and family laws, he never related to them or the cause felt nice compared to most of the believers of the Wandenreich. I can't imagine how distraught and enraged Ryuken must have felt to know that both his cousin and his wife died because of some asshole coming back to life. His disdain to both his culture and the conflict is so justified, I just wished it didn't get in the way of his relationship with Uryu.
Favorite part between ishin and ryukan was when ishin got his powers back and asked ryukan 'how do I look?' He responds 'makes me want to puke'. 😂

Thanks for this! I also agree that TYBW should have had more Uryu and Souken, given the final boss was a Quincy. It was rushed in the manga for sure, but still amazing that Kubo still managed to flesh out the character and show why he is the way he is, instead of leading us to believe he was just an a hole. Hope we get to see more of him for sure!

Ryuken is the only truly indifferent character. The only times he ever did anything was to help Uryu. Other than his son, he really did not give a fk.

IMO, I think is would come down to who’s older/has more battle experience.
Tybw anime will add more fight scenes hopefully ryuken appears in one of these fights
I feel like they did a good job because otherwise it would be a Boruto situation where yeah, boruto's cool. But what about Naruto though? So I think them having the fathers evolved as little as possible is actually a good thing

Everyone may have already talked about this but I just realized something kind of interesting. Juha didn't strip the quincy abilities off of purebloods and took them from everyone else, even Masaki./Kanae Please tell me if I am wrong here, but shouldn't that have included Ichigo and Uryu as well? Unless Juha actively chose who to take powers from but yeah I am not sure though...
Not sure he could; when Masaki & Kanae died, Ichigo & Uryu were still fairly young and probably hadn't even started developing their powers yet.
@@DragoonMS i would guess they were around the age Kazui is, when their mothers died. And Kazui can already manifest a zanpakto..... But even then i believe ichigo's spirit pressure would have been pretty noticeable, barely developed but noticeable. But that is just my thinking on it
He tried to take it from Uryu, but couldnt. Uryu survived his Auswahlen. Thats why he made Uryu his succesor and gave him the letter "A". Yhwach explains this by himself in the TYBW.
The interesting part is Ichigo. But maybe he couldnt take his power because his powers includes Hollowpowers, which are like venom for quincys?
But there is one point, I really dont understand: I thought Ichigos mom was a pureblood-Quincy. Why did he take her power?
@@Itachi_D_Kuchiki Probably because even though the Hollow had been passed to Ichigo, that doesn't change the fact that Masaki HAD been "tainted" by a Hollow.
Unfortunately, they were all brainwashed. Mauri hinted at this fact as he shared his disgust with their typical quincy rhetoric. They were all the same. Like a cult. I think this is the main reason Ryukin did not want uryu to see his grandfather.
I also would have like to see Ryuken and Isshin fight together against the enemy cause they r friends like their kids

Why does Ryuken have brown hair and brown eyes in 2:15 - but in every other scene his hair is silver/white and his eyes are gray?
