Lyatoshynsky's "Overture on Four Ukrainian Folk Themes" was composed in 1926. As the title indicates, the work uses four Ukrainian folk themes that the composer adapted to his own personal style, instead of just simply quoting them. Unfortunately, not much more info is available on the piece.
The overture is structured in a very loose sonata form. It begins with a slow introduction in which the main two themes appear; the first solemn and stately on the brass, the second being more rhythmic and dynamic. After a crescendo, a polyphonic development on this material takes place. The third theme is then lyrically introduced by the English horn, richly taken by strings. The development continues with increased dissonance and agitation, briefly contrasted by the third theme on the cellos. A climax is reached as a noble and triumphal fourth theme appears on the brass. The development resumes once again, combining all the material until reaching a bright climax. The first theme then leads us to a short but powerful coda.

I never fail to be amused that I lived 82 years without ever hearing the music of Lyatoshynsky until TH-cam put him in front of me.
