I smoke an actual pipe on occasion. It's nice. Relaxing. Better than cigars. But now you show me a coffee pipe? I need to try that. I also need to not spend money. Crap.
Quick correction: The camera shifting isn't a video. Each diorama was 3D scanned and then a method called "photogrammetry" is used. Essentially each diorama has a shot taken for the background you're on, then that image is projected onto primitive geometry. Imagine an object being wrapped by a picture from one perspective. Multiple camera angles are shot for each camera "shift". Here's where things get tricky and I don't have a definitive answer for. Because there's no image information for the geometry from perspectives the camera didn't shoot at, an artist who's working in photogrammetry that doesn't have shot's taken from those perspectives is probably going to have to manually clean up those textures. I'm unsure if Fantasian does this. I noticed in the forest area that the trees had obvious texture smearing when the camera shifts. This is a very common graphical error when there is no texture information. The speed of the camera and the motion blur that's applied may be hiding these graphical blemishes. The reason the tree's standout is because their softer objects that don't have a very distinct profile. So in essence my current theory is that the character in the game is running around in a 3D environment you cant see because of the camera projection, and then when the camera moves multiple blurs are applied as it shifts over to the next camera angle in which another image is applied. The point to explain all this technical detail is that... There's a lot of technical work that went into this game. They could have just shot the diorama a bunch of times and fade-ins and outs, but to go the extra mile and do that is something that should be complimented.
Finally! Someone to talk about this fantastic game with! I'm super glad you gave this game some attention, Derek. I've been absolutely adoring Fantasian. I think the battle system is very intriguing with the whole Dimengeon aspect of it. I also think the controls are super intuitive and the moves in battle feel very satisfying to execute. The diorama environments actually blow my mind. It's like taking that classic pre rendered look of the ps1 days and really elevating it to the next tier. The characters and storyline are very charming, and the memory system is basically just a smaller scale A Thousand Years of Dreams sequence from Lost Odyssey which completely works due to the games hand held nature. The characters and storyline remind me quite a bit of FFVII, especially the character Kina, who has a similar back story to and looks uncannily like Aerith, in a very appealing way for me. The only thing I'm really disappointed by is the splitting of the game into two parts, just because I love the game so much that I want to play it in its entirety right away, but since it's basically free to play, I really can't complain too much. Anyone in love with the ps1 era of jrpgs needs to play Fantasian asap.

The thing that brought me to play JRPGs is the unique graphical style some of them have. Bravely default and Bravely second on the 3DS have amazing stereoscopic 3D effect that make them look like diorama. Octopath Traveler has this unique 2D sprites mixed with 3D backgrounds and depth of field to make it look like diorama as well. However, I am a huge fan of prerendered background JRPGs they look absolutely amazing. I am waiting for Saga Frontier remastered to play and I will try this game while waiting for it.
The best things about apple arcade is no micro transaction. If i want a skin i need to work hard at it I will totally be fine paying 5bucks to play Hoping they'll include more jrpg soon.
I love the PS1 era of RPGs and have hoped for a long while that a new game would be made in that style so I really want to play this. But I'm gonna hold out hope for an eventual port to consoles.
Just a heads up for all, if you are like me and have too many song and want them on the cloud in some way, you can get Apple Arcade with Apple Music, TV and extra storage for $15 a month. It cuts down your cost for the other services while giving you access to the Apple Music library.
Considering this game is developed by Mistwalker, which was founded by Hironobu Sakaguchi (the legendary creator of the Final Fantasy series), I'm not surprised this game is as good as it; even if it is an iOS device. The only thing I wish is that Mistwalker wouuld develop games for PlayStation. It is nice this doesn't have microtransactions/RNG elements. Mobile games are notorious for that aspect and unfortunately a lot of consoles games include that horrible practice these days.
Hahaha, when I saw the pipe I laughed... loved that you explained it in the end. I’m enjoying Fantasian as well. I’ve been checking out other Apple Arcade games and I have to say, it’s been a positive experience. I’m entrenched in the Apple eco system, which means I have a lot of options of where to play Fantasian. I can play on my TV via Apple TV. I can play in my office on my Mac, I can play on the couch on my iPhone... it’s probably to closest to a Switch experience, outside of the Switch. Anyways, I look forward to playing more of Fantasian. I only wish they didn’t release it so closely with Bravely Default 2. I like both the games, but worry about JRPG burnout.
The Apple TV 4K is quite cheap, the game runs very nicely on it and there is a new version due this year, so if you're interested in this game that may be an affordable route for you. Oh and there are plenty of other good games on Apple Arcade to enjoy as well.
A single game isn’t enough for me to sign up for a subscription service. But I do hope with all this coverage it’s getting, they port it to other systems. It’s a perfect switch game.
My hope is to get through the game within a month and cancel before I get charged my first $5. But honestly if I finish it within 5 months or so, I think I'd feel like it was a good deal. :)
Whenever I get an iPad, for sure I'll play it, especially if its these two giants swan song. But for now, money is tight and I'd have to wait for a console release. If not, one day, one day indeed.
I've seen a crazy amount of negative comments saying how people will never play this, unless it comes to other platforms and I'm definitely not happy about it either, but people seem to forget that emulators exist. I'm not sure exactly what it entails, but I know that there's Apple emulators out there and it seems now is the time to figure out which one is best and dive into them. If anyone has experience with them and would like to point me in the right direction for getting the best experience on PC I'd certainly appreciate it.
This seems super interesting. I liked your comparison to FF9 - and it's pretty obvious in graphical style here. I've had it downloaded but decided to play Bravely Default II over this, I think I will play Fantasian instead after watching this! Great stuff Derek.

I really hope this comes to Switch. That and that Demon Warrior game or whatever it's called that has an Okami esque visual style that just went to Apple Arcade
Hey Derek, question for ya: heard this game is going to be coming to the Switch this holiday season. Would you recommend putting it on the "wishlist" or would you say don't bother wasting your time?
@@omensoffate True. However it could be possible that more people who would play this game owns a Switch than a device that can play this game. I for one don't own a device that can play this game but I do own a Switch and would play it if it were available on it. It doesn't even have to be the Switch though. While I don't play games on my phone, I will be more than willing to if this game was compatible with my phone. It seems that Ghost in The shell might be similar to me in that they don't own a device that can play this game yet owns a Switch or other device and would play it if available to them. It's just odd to me that if this is truly their swan song that they'd limit the availability of it. Especially when there's a console currently on the market that's a dumping ground for just these style games. And on a side note, Lost Sphear is so much better than Octopath Traveler.
I hope Sakaguchi and Uematsu don't retire. Wouldn't it be awesome if they came back for one last Square-Enix RPG? I realize Final Fantasy might be too corporate and therefore restrictive to them at this stage in their careers, but maybe something by Tokyo RPG Factory, where they can really let their creativity flow? A new Chrono game would be nice. :P
Man, in a different universe, Sakaguchi owns Square Enix, and Nomura is still a badass character designer. That's the universe I want to be in. I doubt that Sakaguchi would work with SE again though.
As a weed smoker and coffee drinker I loved the little pipe bit. Not a pc or mobile gamer myself but this definitely looks tight af. Appreciate your passion. Now have you ever played Legrande Legacy? I have it on switch and haven't tried it yet. What do you think?
I think the easiest and most ideal way for someone to enjoy this game on their TV, the "traditional way" is with Apple TV ($150.00). If they don't have any other ios devices. I have thought about it myself, but I have FireTV already and unless Apple has paid for the development it ought to at least come to Steam eventually. My backlog is big enough, so I might as well wait and see 🤣 Also, that SN30 Pro+ is also my favourite controller. I have it in all three colours, but my favourite is the "GameBoy" style.
@@SuperDerek yeah, it's exactly the same with a few added features, none of which I would realistically use, such as macros. It's a good thing you got the SNES-themed SN30 Pro+ because they didn't carry over that design to the new model.
Looks great! Though I'd wish it were on more platforms than iOS devices as I jumped ship from that years ago haha. Here's to hoping that it will be on the Switch someday
I've been researching various ways to access Apple Arcade in the cheapest way possible and I can't find anything satisfactory. :/ I can't justify the cost... but I will buy Fantasian on literally any other platform day 1.
Man, if only this wasn't an IOS game, I definitely would have bought it. But that's just not a platform that I'm comfortable playing on, especially a story-heavy game like this.
Games make the platform. There's not a huge difference functionally between the Switch and a smart phone, the main difference is the controller and TV output -- but a lot of Android phones support both of those things. Smart phone games have a bad reputation for good reason, but more games like this _could_ turn that around. That said, I want a physical release, and smart phones don't get _those_
@@SuperDerek Awesome, thanks for the fast reply btw! Keep up the great work man, looking forward as always too the next Trails video, hopefully Fantasian as well if it maintains interest.
Nah, having a spot "In the Game Collection" is basically is like answering, "would I suggest you add the game to your collection?" Is the game fun, noteworthy, or otherwise interesting enough to check out. What I was saying here is that "The Game Collection" show I do is full reviews of games I've finished a play-through of from start to finish, has a fully written and scripted review, highly produced, and takes way longer to put together than a first impressions video like this. :)

Man, in a different universe, Sakaguchi owns Square Enix, and Nomura is still a badass character designer. That's the universe I want to be in. I doubt that Sakaguchi would work with SE again though.
Played it and like it but I wish it was on my PS5 or Switch 😢
Your wish is granted. Refer to the recent Nintendo Direct. I think SuperDerek should be aware of it by now.
@@ThomasJeff1898 yep I saw the Direct! Buying it day 1 can’t wait!!
Yeah the GameBoy one sure is tempting! Apparently they've got a new controller out that I may want to snag. :)
@@SuperDerek yeah, it's exactly the same with a few added features, none of which I would realistically use, such as macros. It's a good thing you got the SNES-themed SN30 Pro+ because they didn't carry over that design to the new model.
A lot of people own Apple devices, so there is a market. But, I believe Apple paid for the development, so I doubt it is going to go cross platform.
Your half on whether to drop it so what exactly about it makes you question that? Everything you said about sounded really good.
My plan was to drop it for times sake, but now I'm second guessing that choice because the game is good! :)
ISO exclusive might look into it do have older model I-Pad not sure it’ll support it maybe the iPhone version will be the one to look into maybe.
Looks great! Though I'd wish it were on more platforms than iOS devices as I jumped ship from that years ago haha. Here's to hoping that it will be on the Switch someday
Really diggin the pipe lol
Tell me this will make its way outside of the apple ecosystem...
I've been researching various ways to access Apple Arcade in the cheapest way possible and I can't find anything satisfactory. :/ I can't justify the cost... but I will buy Fantasian on literally any other platform day 1.
Wow looks like a super cool game, just a shame it's on apple arcade. I don't own any apple stuff anymore :(
I supported Sakaguchi and got blue dragon, lost odyssey and last story when he left Square-enix but this game? it doesnt look like its for me!
Man, if only this wasn't an IOS game, I definitely would have bought it. But that's just not a platform that I'm comfortable playing on, especially a story-heavy game like this.
Really wishing I didn't switch to Android a couple minutes ago.
Sound on this vid is really weird.
Why the hell would they release this on a platform with very few users? Seems to be very limiting their prospects for profit.
Very true
Same reason publishers release on Stadia, they got paid more than they are worth.
I'm sure it will come to Android and others eventually
@@scottsims6127 it needs to come to real systems, not smart phones.
Games make the platform. There's not a huge difference functionally between the Switch and a smart phone, the main difference is the controller and TV output -- but a lot of Android phones support both of those things. Smart phone games have a bad reputation for good reason, but more games like this _could_ turn that around.
That said, I want a physical release, and smart phones don't get _those_
It's a shame the game's limited to one platform. I wouldn't want to buy an iphone or an ipad just for one game.
Yeah, more platforms is always better for everyone. :)
Is it super easy??
now if this was on android...
Is there anyway to play this with emulation on Android? Too poor for Apple products :(
Not yet, but if something changes I'll try to keep everyone in the loop. :)
@@SuperDerek Awesome, thanks for the fast reply btw!
Keep up the great work man, looking forward as always too the next Trails video, hopefully Fantasian as well if it maintains interest.
Aaaaah so a spot in the game collection means you have completed the game?
Nah, having a spot "In the Game Collection" is basically is like answering, "would I suggest you add the game to your collection?" Is the game fun, noteworthy, or otherwise interesting enough to check out.
What I was saying here is that "The Game Collection" show I do is full reviews of games I've finished a play-through of from start to finish, has a fully written and scripted review, highly produced, and takes way longer to put together than a first impressions video like this. :)
@@SuperDerek That's awesome my friend and thanks for clarifying. Always enjoy the videos so thanks! Yesterday I found your goemon 64 review - what a great game! I just bought a 64 to relive some amazing childhood memories and goemon is on the list of games to buy. In the meanwhile enjoying phantom hourglass on the ds. Thanks again Super Derek!
Will it come to switch?! The Apple thing pisses me off no ones ever even heard of it
can i play this on pc?
Mac / iOS / Apple TV exclusive. Might be able to spin up a virtual machine for it though. :)
i hope it comes to other platforms, because i'm not an apple person.
do you think they will release a real version of this on another console? I have a iphone 12 pro max, i just dont want to play RPGs on it :P or games at all. i use it to read mail & txts :P
Gutted this is exclusive to apple/mobile . I have an iPad but I have no interest in playing games on it tbh .
The non stop boss battles is honestly kinda annoying af
love it but dam im android sigh...
This is what I wanted from a retro rpg. So tired of 16 bit super Nintendo stuff
@@morriganrenfield8240 those look to super Nintendo for me
@@morriganrenfield8240 it literally looks like a super Nintendo ran through a 4k filter on a pc
@@morriganrenfield8240 wow a ps2 water effect in the far background how cool. The rest is still 16 bit nostalgia bait
I too, will play it when it comes to Switch
