They auditioned about 70 people and I was one of the last ones that got to audition so even though they'd already kinda wanted Chris they still auditioned everybody else because that really is the stand-up guys they are. They could've easily just said nah we got the guy we want but they were cool enough to let everyone else come in and audition. That experience was what makes them one of my favorite bands

@@metallaholic Yes. They sent me a FedEx package with a cassette with 4 songs to learn. When I got there it was only 2 songs and I got to pick the songs so I figured something was up. I picked Alone + Easy Target and Everlong

@@stonepumpkinsable I heard it was between Chris and Walter Schreifels of quicksand and rival schools fame. Apparently Walter was very NYC based and didn't want to move which didn't help his chances.
Chris has been one of the most solid lead guitarists in rock for the last 15+ years, never overplaying but you always know it's him when his lead parts come in.

Chris is so rad! I played drums in a band called 22 Jack's with Chris. So damn happy for him! His brother Scott was also in 22Jacks! Both incredible players!
oh wow, I remember some of yours songs on those first warped tour albums like back in 98/99 when that whole So Cal punk rock sound was in its prime. Didn’t Steve Soto from the Adolescents play bass in the band??

I've seen them live and up close a few times and I've noticed Chris during group interviews looking comfortable to just sit and let Dave do all the talking. I always took him for someone kind of shy and introverted (at lease compared to the rest of the band) until now. He's really well-spoken and animated and seemingly down-to-earth. I'd love to drink beer with this whole crew and listen to their stories.
I just bought his tribute guitar the fender telecaster deluxe...I've never ever in my life bought a guitar with an artists name on it..but I like the Foo fighters they are just simply down to Earth rock legends!

Chris Shiflett really is a superstar guitarist, seriously technical and fast. One of the best in the business IMO. I can't imagine Foo Fighters without him!

I had never seen FF before this years concert tour, but have been listening to them since the first CD... Got a phone call to scrimmage Chris and their sounds/bodyguards at some indoor soccer!!! Then we got free all access tickets for the concert in Cincinnati!!! Woot!!! Chris was a pretty decent player, by the way.
His time in No Use For A Name and playing with Tony Sly was a great time in both there careers.
I saw Chris Shiflett and band in 2010 at TT the Bears, Cambridge, MA. I paid my $10 fee and went to the bar. TT's was a very small place. I was extremely tired and thought about staying at the bar, which only two other people sat, and I'd listen from there. When I saw Chris and the band take the stage, I got up and slowly lumbered over the the stage floor area, all of 20 feet away. At that moment, Chris sized up the room and wanting everybody in front of the stage, he called out the couple whom stayed at the bar. They did get up and walk to the stage floor area and I started laughing. So if you ever see Chris Shiflett live, he is quick witted and he will notice you. The 45 minute set was good, original, straight up Rock.
I like his work and place in the Foos. He's a nice piece of the puzzle!

@@bernlin2000 He might have thought of it as too far fetched idea. The position that he would have been auditioning for is the one Buckethead got and the reality is everyone who was getting the GNR gig at the time came from notable bands. So not only is he auditioning far harder material but against famous musicians. Either way he made a smart decision to ask about the Foo Fighters.

It was pure joy to not only see Chris and Foo @ Bottlerock but also saw his band play what he called his best gig ever the same weekend at Bottlerock! You wanted the best you got the best, the hottest band in the world, Chris! ;) NUFAN for life!

they were in the same "scene" as kids n they were probably at the same shows at some times but they never met until later on.

According to Dave in the Back and Forth documentary they realized during the audition that they played the same gig. They officially met at the audition for the first time that they remembered.

Cool guy. And really good on guitar. Has abilities way beyond what the Foo's play. But its not always about that is it.

One of the most underrated guitar players today
I remember I was hanging out with the guys from NUFAN, my old band was playing that night too, and during sound check the guys in NUFAN were talking (if I remember right the guitar player from suicidal tendencies was filling in for Chris on that tour) and someone asked one of them about “Shift” and someone said,
“You mean the Foo Fighter?”
That’s when I found out Chris was the new guitar player for the Foo’s.
Another funny thing about that guitar audition was that when I watched the documentary and that scene came on, there was another guy who auditioned, the weird one who they blurred his face, I recognized him, and I realized that I had tried that same dude out as a drummer one time… he was a pretty strange fella.

That is a phenomenal story. Just putting it out there that if Dave and co want me to join then, yeah sure, I have a few days annual leave left this year from from work. I can definitely make that audition, even if it's in Antarctica. My line manager will understand 😂

Chris said he never met any of the Foo's before the audition... but in an interview with Howard Stern this month (2/21) Dave told Howard that in Chris' audition they figured out that they did meet earlier as Dave's band Scream was playing out in LA and played a gig with Chris' band and they were both out of the punk scene. Sooo somebody's memory is lacking (Chris)
