The 10 Minute "balance killer" Double Bassdrum Warmup

  • Hi! I´m a Portuguese drummer and I just wanted to share a simple 10 minute double bassdrum (or double pedal) warmup exercise routine that I go through before shows or practice/recording sessions. These exercises are also good for double bassdrum endurance prep, or even fast double bassdrum, as they improve your balance. You can also use these short exercises to workout your swivel technique, floating technique, or ankle motion. Feel free to visit my facebook page at / emidioalexandredrums and hit me up in the chatbox if you need a PDF with the exercises or have any questions, or just hit me up on the comment section if you just want to say hello! Lemme know how this exercise routine worked for you ;) Cheers!!
    Filmed in AlmadaEstudios - / almada.estudios
    Played by Emidio Alexandre - / emidioalexandredrums
    Special thanx - Isabel Barragán

    Great stuff! I started recently a similar (almost) daily work out, but it's 39 minutes and I do each pattern for 3 minutes. I mix up paradiddles, double 8th notes, alternating 8th + 16th notes, straight alternating 16th notes, 4th and 8th notes on each side, 16th triplets and so on.
    My comfort zone has always been 16th notes at 170-180 bpm and that was all I needed. But I struggled from >120 - 160

      Hey bro, how are you? Yes, this actually really can create a couple cool ostinatos. I uploaded to FaceBook a silly exercise based on the first warmup on this video, wich uses it as an ostinato, then hands play 3 against 4 and ultimately become a metric modulation when the snare is added. It´s all goofy and riddled with light mistakes, but I´ll leave u a link in case you want to take a peek, since it´s related to your comment.
      facebook.com/almada.estudios/videos/1925811277473574/
      PS: I really admire Jazz drummers, although I don´t play jazz at all. Cheers and thanx for watching!!

    • @jas_bataille
      @jas_bataille 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My oh my I like it! Reminds of me of some of some of the stuff I used to do in college. I'm not in this kind of shape anymore... but it'll come. I just recently picked the drums back up. I cannot live without it. I was feeling depressive, nothing was going on in my life and other ventures like photography... and then I just though, fuck, I'm not playing anymore... and I forgot how badly needed this therapy was. There come a time when you can't go back. After 12 years and going through cancer and mental illness... the drums always been by my side...! Anyway thanks bro. Hope we run into each other one day. Perhaps, I'll learn how to play metal... who knows? xD

    Good drill. Alternating your lead foot is crucial. Every drill a double bass drummer does should incorporate that. And your English is amazing. Very minor accent. Probably wouldn't have noticed if you didn't have it in your description (and I'm a language professional). Parabens senhor!

    Man, double bass drumming is the most soulcrushing thing ever!
    The amount of hours you have to put in with very very little progress... absolutely brutal! -__-

    • @almadaestudios
      @almadaestudios  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I know dude! it´s very unforgiving. Worst thing is the more you progress, the more you have to keep your muscle memory in check. I´ve taken a huge break of 9 months, and my endurance has reduced 50%. Well, drumming is almost a sport I guess hahaha

    • @prod_adrian
      @prod_adrian 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@almadaestudios
      Oh yes man, so many emotions that get triggered throughout the progress... anger, hate, depression, distress! Sometimes it seems like its not even meant for me to play 200bpm on feet...
      & at this point of extreme drumming it definitely is like a sport, very demanding!
      Any tips for me? I can only do 135bpm 8ths seperated and 125bpm both together... i practise everyday with click and various patterns. All full leg motion for now, waiting for clean 140bpm to be playable and then start ankle motion.

    • @almadaestudios
      @almadaestudios  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@prod_adrian of course, lots of tips! I´m a big advocate of balance being the key for it all, so it begs the first question: how are you sitting? if you lift both your legs, can you balance yourself, or do you immediately fall over?

    • @prod_adrian
      @prod_adrian 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@almadaestudios I think balance is a big problem for me, thats probably the reason why i have to go slower when playing with both feet together (legs/feet not grounded to floor) than seperated. And for throne position, basically like what Marthyn or James Payne recommend. Pretty far back on the throne, so i can tap with the ankle but also you full leg for drive. I dont fall over but i can also sense its not comfortable for me either (yet). I used to play heeldown when i was a child so the lack of anchor to the ground was a very different feel for me starting the full leg motion. I had like hip flexor muscle soreness the first weeks, because the change of movement.
      thank you man

      @@prod_adrian the biggest issue is taking everything with a grain of salt. Everybody is different, so recommendations are always to be taken with care. Not everyone reacts the same to the same type of practice. What I'd recommend for sure is to work on balance. At speeds until 16th notes of 160bpm I wouldn't even worry about hip flexors or whatnot. I'd just go for it, you can go full leg caveman motion easilly. From 175 or so, that's when ankle play has to get involved in order to maintain endurance. In any case,enjoy your practice! As a rule of thumb, I'd do workouts of 10 mins (straight) of a comfortable tempo, 5 mins a bit faster, And 1 minute on a bpm close to your max. Rinse and repeat, the only changes are the bpm, that hopefully keep getting higher and higher. Also remember progression is not achieved daily, sometimes it takes a year for you to notice

      But endurance at "slow" speeds is necessary in order to achieve higher speeds! (well not achieve, but to maintain them for longer than just a burst)

      Emidio Alexandre how do u like those pedals? I'm looking into getting thr p932 for price wise. What's ur opinion on them

    • @almadaestudios
      @almadaestudios  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey buddy! I don´t know about the p932, never used them... but if you want to know more about the Demondrive, watch my video where I review them, (just turn the subtitles on because I didn´t spoke english on it)... But long story shot, the demondrives are really good. The p932 is good if it´s going to be your first pedal, but if you´re into getting a pedal for some years, just save up some more money... it´s going to be worth it

    • @bnrz28
      @bnrz28 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Emidio Alexandre thanks for the reply. And we'll I'm looking to try the longboard style pedals and the p932 is cost friendly and as I'm on a budget.. but right now I have a set of dw 5000 which work well but they are a little older and I'm starting to notice the wear on them.

    • @almadaestudios
      @almadaestudios  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well the only prob I see with the p932 is that the foot board doesn´t have an independent ajuster... but that shouldn´t be a prob to you, since I believe the dw5000 also does not. No big deal there. also - bear in mind that the Pearl longboar is the shortest in the market

      Use it more then. Instead of playing with your right foot, use your left foot. When playing a pattern with a double stroke on the kick, get your left foot involved: play the second or first note. Alternate. After you do both for a few months, it'll become easy and there will no longer be such a thing as a "weak foot."

    • @almadaestudios
      @almadaestudios  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, this DOES help alot. Because it fiddles with your balance. Before I couldn´t endure 16th notes @180 bpms for 4, maybe 8 bars even. Now I can do 50 minutes straight, without stopping. Balance is really important when u play ankles instead of legs. Please let me know how you´re progressing, if u need a PDF or w/e, just contact me via Facebook! cheers and have a nice holyday ;)

    Awesome warmup. I’m going to implement this. I have a question. Do you have an exercise specifically to increase your double pedal speed?

    • @almadaestudios
      @almadaestudios  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @MeytalHead Hey bro all good with you today? First off, thank you very much for commenting, hope u do try the warmup! Well, now for your question: For me these are actually part of a speed gaining routine, because they work on your BALANCE and u need to be well balanced on your seat/throne in order to properly execute some techniques. Once you have the balance down, check out james payne´s "Stone killer" exercises for the feet, they cover alot of ground for speep. Finally, check out Eugene Ryabchenko´s video also about foot speed, he has preety good recomendations about speed/endurance. Cheers bro!

    Hey man this is awesome, your technique is sick. I'm recently trying to get into the habit of ankle motion, do you have any tutorials on how you go about the technique? My feet naturally swivel at higher tempos, but its sloppy at times and I suck for long stints of single 16ths. Also I got the same pedal, forever messing around with the settings, can't seem to find a comfortable setup. What have you got your pedal setup like?
    Cheers!

      Hey man, thanx for the comment!! As for ankle motion, just practice the floating technique (also called the "basketball bounce") for long periods of time, on lower, more confortable bpms. Also, practice heel down for some time - in spite of you NOT using heel down on your playing, it helps to strenghten your shin muscles, used for ankle motion. As for my settings I have the pedal on longboard and springs maxed out. These are the only things you really should try, all the other settings depend on wht´s confortable for you. Just don´t keep changing them everyday... it´s important you give it a try for at least a week!
      Also, try this warmup in the video, it helps, I promiss.
      ;)

    Gene Hoglan would approve of this video. The only things missing are ankle weights and a pair of combat boots. Nobody's too advanced for a warm-up. Are Marines too "advanced" to do pushups? I think not.

      Hey man, all good with you?ahahaha we´ll i´d be a HUGE honour if gene did aproove it for some reason, ehehe. Well, the "advanced" thing is tricky: I know guys that don´t warmup at all and can pull off amazing speeds beyond my measure. I´m quite different, I need to warmup for optimal performance. Now, will they develop injury playing not warming up? prolly, dunno. Thanx for the input and have a great week my friend

      @@almadaestudios It was a compliment, bud. I'd have to be a jumped-up prick to take issue with the video. The only thing that I take issue with is people who think they're too advanced for a warm-up. Warming up is not about doing some wanky bullshit. It's about warming up lol.
      Warming up means the same thing to a musician as it does to an infantryman, or anyone else that does anything remotely physical for a living. It enables you to perform without hurting yourself over time. I know shit seems easy when you're young, but as soon as you hit 30, that all changes.

      @@sreenivasgani7563 thank you for your kind words my friend! Well, dont be discouraged: it takes a long time. You will feel stuck for months, even a year, and then suddenly, you make progress. The exercises in this vídeo are preety good for developing the balance inherent to playing ankles, But, there is nothing wrong with using heeltoe. I cant play singles for a long time for more than 230bpms,so I also use heeltoe for faster stuff. Just keep praticing, you will be flying in no time! Thank u for commenting

    Nice video bro. However i hav.e a question. If i am not mistaken you use heel up technique. i use it too. Do i do something wrong? Cause ur toes don't stay always in touch with the peda;

    • @almadaestudios
      @almadaestudios  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Alex! Glad u liked the video, hope you try the warmup yourself!! Well, yes my heels are up, but the motion is only from the ankles, not the leg. Of course you CAN play ankles and ALWAYS keep your toes stay in touch with the pedal, but I like to use a little bit of swivel as well. What DOES stay in touch with the pedal always, is the ball of my foot (that little lump, right below your toes.) But this is just me, it doesn´t mean it´s the correct way to play, at all. To each his own, right?

      Nah, nothing new, just plain ´ol ankle with a bit of swivel. Only diference is that the FULCRUM is not with the toes, but with the ball of the foot. Cheers and take care bro - hope you try this warmup, though!
