I think it's important to mention to anyone checking this out that Ben got "Genuine Dickies," which is a reduced quality line exclusive to walmart. They're basically the same cost as proper dickies models but with even worse materials and finish to maximize profits. Original dickies are better, but they're still like $25 USD, so the issues he brings up are still valid, just less severe.
Whoops!! 😂 Oh well. I wish I knew this before I made the video. It does make a good point about whether it's worth it to make cheaper versions of a product without having it labelled as such. I would have never known there were better quality options. As far as I was concerned they were hot trash and I never would have bought them again.
Once you wear a pair of stretchy Jean's/ Chinos you will never go back. I literally cant wear any pants without stretch. Got rid of all my old 100% cotton pants many years ago, and I'll never look back.
The double knees from Dickies are my favorite even though it has that layer on the knee, it is just a bit more balanced and not as thick as double front pants and look really well in my opinion. It feels long enough to me but I'm 5'9 and I get a bunch of heel drag on the bottom. But I do agree that they get tattered up with relative ease. But for a quick and easy pant that I know will get abused it works well for my needs.
the original 874 Dickies used to be the only Dickies.... fuck all these hipsters destroying brands. Now they make these retarded spandex micro plastic TIGHT 873 pants and other garbage. I mean seriously...if you dont like work/baggy pants, stick to fucking fashion labels
i think you had more of a negative experience with the dickies because you bought the "genuine dickies" which is the walmart knockdown line. the dickies without the "genuine" branding are better quality imo.
Dickies has, to my understanding, at least two lines. The stuff they ship to Walmart isn’t the same stuff they ship to their stores or if you buy direct online. Quality is still relatively low but I do think they’re better than the Walmart pants. They’re also labeled better with different fit numbers. Dickies also get WAY more comfortable when you wash and wear them a bunches. Interested to try carhartts, when I get a chance. Dickies do not cut it for these toasty southern summers.
Dickies are really high quality for their price. Even at walmart, they can sell 874s and some other model numbers depending on where you are. Super durable as well
My evolution from the start of the video to the end of the video: Why am I watching a pants review video from a guy whose carpentry channel I'm subscribed to? What do I care about clothes/fashion? Why do I suddenly care so much about the quality of pants I'm wearing? What the hell is this? What's going on? Dammit all if I'm not about to go shopping for a couple pairs of Carhartts now! P.S. I got a pair of Carharrts the other day, the most expensive trousers I've ever bought. £105 reduced to £60. They're pretty good, I think the main thing is they should last for years. 🤞
Carhartt has a streetwear brand (Carhartt WIP) that has a model called “Simple Pant”. 100% cotton, light material, loose fit and no hammer loops. Pretty expensive in Europe, but good for skating.
Damn I really forget how much of a small channel you are, I absolutely love your content man been watching for three years now and I’m glad you’re still posting You also definitely pushed me to get some carhartt and I love them lol
I only skate in Carhartts. They are 100% skate armor and I don’t look like a Hot Topic kid. The soft summer slimmer pair is the Washed Twill Relaxed Fit, the two hammer loop ones are the Loose Fit Canvas Carpenter Pant, and the baggier thick ones are the Washed Duck Work Pant (classics)... These pants last forever and fade out real nice.
My favorite Dickies are the 873 Flex. Never tried Carhartt. I usually get dickies for $20 US. So I don't feel bad if I mess them up. They also stay pretty cool in Texas heat. Dickies do run small on the waist though.
Yea they are supposed to sit higher than normal pants so the waist is smaller. I actually like because i never need belts when i wear dickies and they are still loose enough to not constrict my legs.
You’re 100% right about pants and skating. I can’t skate if I’m wearing pants that don’t feel good to me. Right now, my favorite pants are the RSQ Chinos from Tillys. So good.

I had the same issues with dickies. Polar pants look great. Latly I skate more and more baggy pants and it feels soo good. Never want to go back to skinny jeans
Thanks Ben! I just spent money on Carharrt work pants that don't restrict my movement and shorts that I look cool skating in. My wife wanted to know where the money went and I told her some guy on youtube told me they were great pants. Now I have no money for pickles on Saturday.
Yo have you heard of Carhartt's other brand Carhartt WIP? WIP stands for Work in Progress, and it's their fashion/streetwear/skate focused clothing line. I think pretty much all of their pants and denim would suit what you're looking for really well. They definitely cost more but you can also find them on sale fairly often with different retailers. The way to differentiate regular Carhartt clothing from Carhartt WIP is that the inside label and tags will say "Carhartt Work in Progress." They even have a skate team.
I agree Carhartt WIP is probably my favorite brand and are worth the price for me because they are such good material and they last years also they have been putting money into skateboarding since 1995

Would love to see more. There are some great features and comfort to be found in dressy/casual pants - not the thin super dressy ones but thicker cotton ones like khakis/chinos... definitely flat front.
Hey Ben I love your videos and your opinions help me spend my money wisely on skate gear and iv learned a lot from your videos. Keep up the good work man I absolutely love your content on this channel!
I work as a machinist now, but I used to work with structural steel, always Carhartts. They make new light weight ones similar to what you're wearing in this video. They're awesome.
LOL! Can't believe I just listened to Ben ramble on about pants for the past nearly 20 minutes! And somehow didn't get bored with it. I like the way Ben analyzes the $%^& out of everything. I'm the same way. My current skate pants are Levi Cargo pants that a bought a good decade ago. I was thinking about trying Dickies, but, they look like $%^& from what Ben showed. Unsurprisingly poor quality from a store like Walmart. My favorite pants to skate in when I was young were Army pants. I think I got them at an Army surplus store.
I would like to see a video on Q&A. Example, like what skate bearings you prefer? What are the things that go through your mind to land a new trick? What trucks you like to use most?
You touched on something important, Ben, when you mentioned the pants getting stuck to you in the humidity. Nothing’s worse than pants bunching up around my thighs, hampering the range of motion. I’ve found Rothco BDU’s and Nike SB pants to have a nice roomy, lightweight fit, which is perfect for the sweltering furnace of East Coast summers (shorts are out of the question). For the fall/winter/spring, I’ve been skating these relaxed fit, 4-way stretch Wranglers I got at Target a few years ago. Been curious about the flannel-lined work pants for the brick season, but worried they’ll feel like lead.
My favorite skate pants are the Old Navy go-dry pants that just look like black slacks. Don't stick to your legs when you sweat. Don't bind your legs when it gets hot. And they're pretty cheap.
I’m glad people mentioned Ben had “Genuine Dickies” in this video which I’m not a fan of...I’d recommend trying Dickies 873(slim fit straight leg) but beware they’re run large and Dickies is inconsistent in sizing (in my experience).
love your vids man and being a bigger dude like 6' 1" 260+, I like to skate in Old Navy athletic fitjeans and Calvin Klein Athletic Tapered and big brand joggers like Nike, Adidas, and Champion
@@thesharinganknight thank you so much! that means a lot! My wife got me into the Old Navy. she got them on sale and I'm digging them. I am having a hard time skating in pants down here in florida. waaaayyy too hot and humid
I had dickies for work and now I bought carharts, but yeah dickies was more durable compared to my other denim. They lasted me around 2 years, and that’s me doing auto body work, grinding and welding, and rolling around on the ground doing mechanical stuff. But they feel really synthetic and weird, but as soon as I put carharts on they felt super comfortable. I love everything about them, I just don’t know how durable they are
I have subscribed based on the fact you are gonna teach me how to dress. I'm a clueless 30 year old man and you seem to know fashion. Don't let me down.
My favorite pants for skating and casual wear are the RSQ Seattle/London from Tillys. They make them in 33x30 which was my size before quarantine, now I'm probably closer to 34. The best part: stretchy waistline. They're so comfortable and come in a lot of different colors. Plus they almost always have a buy 1 get 1 half-off. They're around $40-50 depending on material.
The best looking pants there were the Haggar's you were wearing. I've actually been into pleated pants recently. Apparently they're back in fashion now so win win. As for Carhartt, I have a pair of their B13 carpenter jeans. Love the fit of them, but the denim they're made out of is a lot thinner than I was expecting and it's also a bit starchy. Still, they're great in winter because they're loose fit. It means I can easily wear a pair of joggers underneath them for extra warmth. I bought some Dickies jeans recently too, but they have the opposite problem from the 864's you bought. The waist is a size larger than it's supposed to be, so I'm gonna have to get them taken in a couple inches.
Dakota's are pretty damn good to. I whipped out fast & hard in my older double front carpenter Dakota's on Thursday evening and they helped keep more skin on me.
I got a brand new pair of carhartts at the thrift store for $20. still had the tags, made in the USA, never even been worn. best $20 I've ever spent in my life
I just ordered the first pair of Carharts you held up and love the feel of them. That being said the color is obviously fresh and not as faded which is what I’m hoping happens soon. About how long do they take to fade and get that nice look to them? I know it’s a superficial thing to ask about a pair of pants but i had to ask anyway. Thanks for the reviews and love the content!
I have always just used jeans for skating, and carpentry to be honest. Nice price, tuff, flexible. The stretch jeans are more comfortable and more breathable. It depends on the brand too, different fitting etc
Super important topic to make a video on, thanks Ben! Why super important? Let me explain: I am wearing the Carhartt "Simple Pant" for Skating, Business, working and everday use for more than 20 years now, it is my go-to trousers. Once i was out to try getting some SP's in a skate shop, but they didn't have them. The seller just said: "You can buy Dickies, they're made out of the same fabric". I was almost choking when i tried to suppress my laugh :D But the Simple Pants today are a bit different. They are available in three different fabrics now. They stitching is not so soft as it was before, the Polyester was 20%, now it's 30%, which makes the fabric ("Denison Twill") a little less soft and smooth. Then there's the higher quality cotton and Cordura (iirc, see webiste), which i didn't try. They have no side pockets, just two good sized ones on the front and on the back, i never had a problem getting a bigger wallet into the back pockets. They're cut very straight, triple stitched. One of the newer ones had a broken zipper after a while (the first broken zipper on one of my carhartt's in my life), the other one had a little hole after a fall on concrete (perfectly rolled, no sliding, but quite a hard hit). They hold up really well and look just simple and loose, they are light and not too warm to skate in summer, outside of the really hot hours. Movement doesn't feel restricted in these, too, but i think they were a tad wider in the past. They're still nowhere near slim or tight and i usually buy these off the website in any available color for 69 Euros (about 80 Dollars), sometimes as low as 30 Euros in some colors on sale, usually around 50 when stil availablel in my size (29/32). Try these Ben, if you are looking for a simple, thin and loose fitted pair of trousers. You might prefer the cotton ones, which are a bit more costly.
I don't know about skating but for any physical work carhartt is the way to go, very durable great fit and will serve you for years. I even have few pairs that are used specifically for everyday use.
This was a perfect video. I’m also 6’1” and wear a 34/34 (or 34L for those shit shops that don’t specify leg). I was looking at Carhartt & Dickies recently too because I’ve only really got 1 pair of skateable jeans. Clearly now it’s just Carhartt I’m looking at
all you really need to know: Carhartt = slightly more durable; Dickies = slightly more comfortable, significantly cheaper... ... i'm an avid wearer of both brands, IMO this sums up the difference.
You should check out Artform Cargo Pants. They are extremely comfortable. If you go up in size, you get a nice flowy baggy feel, plus they have ties around the waist so they can be fitted at a bigger size.
I wear the Carhartt Men's Force Tappen Cargo Pant s, they are very much like the grey pair you have there but have cargo pockets on both sides. I wear these during the summer time and than wear there force overalls during the winter.
target has a brand called denizen by levi get those pants they are super comfortable and a nice stretch fit and they are pretty durable. They are made from %66 cotton, %33 polyester (for the durability) and %1 elastane. they are awesome denims
it seems like you would want a little of spandex/synthetic material in your pants especially if you're skating because you need the flexibility. 100% cotton is good but it's also what makes pants tight and rigid. vintage denim jeans are usually 100% cotton but are tight and dont stretch at all.
Agreed, not a fan of Dickies. Give the Wrangler Riggs Workwear a shot, 100% cotton, fit loose, they do have the hammer loop but I just take the scissors to it.
Hey Ben just a heads up. I don't know if dickies still does this, but their work pants used to have a material release on the waist that you could cut and it would open up the waist by at least an inch. This is kind of hard to explain, but essentially its a fold of material on the waist that when you cut the thread it will open up. Give that smaller pair a look, maybe they have it.
Hey Ben, Amazon sucks but they have a lot of different carhartt pants options. They even carry ones with no side pockets and some other lighter-weight styles. I almost exclusively wear Carhartt for the same reasons you mentioned
Try the relaxed jeans, they’re pretty light and flexible and don’t have any extra pockets. Just make sure to get the light weight version as purposely make a heavier, thicker version too
Dickies aren't comfortable at all until they've been washed a couple times. I wore them all through high school and still do but they have a break in period for sure.
A really good pair I personally wear are obviously a couple pairs of carhartts but also ben davis's(thats the brand) they hold up really well and feel very good
Hey Ben, I know it’s an older video but the carhartt with the 2% spandex are the carhartt rugged flex, definitely the best summer work pants. Just wanted to let you know in case you were still looking for them. Keep up the great videos!
Carrhart is hands down better.. triple stitched seems @14:32 ..you get what you pay for...I had a pair of work pants that lasted 10 years! Function before fashion.
Dickies in Europe are 60€ and up. I ripped a pair of the 60€ ones (without stretch material) in the crotch on the first day of skating. I switched over to uniqlo stuff. Pretty solid and you can get chinos for about 30€. Right now I am skating in 10€ uniqlo pants and imho they even look pretty cool.
Can you get Carharrt WiP over in the US/Canada? It might just be Europe focused, but it’s the more fashion orientated side of Carhartt. So the quality is the same as standard Carhartt but they have a wider range of fits and styles.
Commenting on a 3yo video… but since you asked it would be cool to see another one of these with a comparison of the discontinued Carhartt models VS new/replacement models. Would also be cool to get reviews on some of the official Dickies skateboarding pants as well as Carhartt WIP
I picked up a pie of ultimate straight khaki chinos from Old Navy (98% cotton 2% spandex) and was surprised that they were pretty good, not meant to be worked and skated but held its own fairly decent with one knee tear. I think they were $20 or $25 I can’t remember too well. If you were curious I’d check them out for a good cheap alternative. Awesome video!
I myself wear work pants because I only get 45 minutes to an hour after I get out of work to skate so I throw my board and skate shoes in my truck and just wear my work clothes instead of taking an extra 15 minute drive home to change and drive 15 minutes back to the park and only get to skate for 15-30 minutes. If I could change my pants I definitely would. I like a straight fit with the flex comfort or whatever you call it. Feels nice on the jewels when doing flip tricks like hard flips that require my legs to spread pretty far😂
i like dickies shorts better than their pants, they are relaxed and comfortable length. specifically the 13", the 15" are a bit too long. i'm 6'3 and all legs, and i like my shorts to reach my knees. they have duck canvas shorts that are quite comfortable, but not as durable as i would've guessed, but not bad for the price. workwear brands are great for skateboarding, even the less familiar/expensive ones. i like to look for stuff at thrift stores too. carhartt hoodies are my absolute favorite and well worth the price
I feel really behind on skate pants. I'm skill skating in Levi's stretch jeans right now. I guess it you grow up skating in Blind jeans you can skate in anything lol
recently ordered some CCS pants "relaxed fit" and they've been great so far, reasonable price.. also recently ripped thru a pair of Altamont jeans that lasted for 10 years lol

I’m glad people mentioned Ben had “Genuine Dickies” in this video which I’m not a fan of...I’d recommend trying Dickies 873(slim fit straight leg) but beware they’re run large and Dickies is inconsistent in sizing (in my experience).
I’ve been skating Old Navy pants and I really like them. But mostly I go to a shop like ROSS and buy some cheap Dockers or something like that.
love your vids man and being a bigger dude like 6' 1" 260+, I like to skate in Old Navy athletic fitjeans and Calvin Klein Athletic Tapered and big brand joggers like Nike, Adidas, and Champion
@@thesharinganknight thank you so much! that means a lot! My wife got me into the Old Navy. she got them on sale and I'm digging them. I am having a hard time skating in pants down here in florida. waaaayyy too hot and humid
Toni Loves Skateboarding for real live in Georgia so I know how hot, muggy and bipolar the weather is too 🤘🏾
The Sharingan Knight oh yeah! You know for sure. It’s crazy, man. The heat really changes the game entirely
874 and 874 flex, and genuine slim 67s
I laughed way too hard at the “ wasp “ joke
Lol I’ve been skating on and off for like 10 years and never tried either of these brands. Dockers all day every day for me.
Dockers
DICKIES my dude.
Levi’s 541 all day my dude.
Dockers go hard but they rip pretty easy
Yesss my dude!
I have always just used jeans for skating, and carpentry to be honest. Nice price, tuff, flexible. The stretch jeans are more comfortable and more breathable. It depends on the brand too, different fitting etc
A year later, what are your thoughts on the new Polar Skate co’s Big boy jeans for well over $100+? Seems a bit over the top and ridiculous to me.
I was almost choking when i tried to suppress my laugh :D
But the Simple Pants today are a bit different.
Clearly now it’s just Carhartt I’m looking at
all you really need to know:
Carhartt = slightly more durable; Dickies = slightly more comfortable, significantly cheaper...
... i'm an avid wearer of both brands, IMO this sums up the difference.
Have you tried Ben Davis or Roundhouse pants? Why not wear jeans? What's wrong with the double front pants?
You should check out Artform Cargo Pants. They are extremely comfortable. If you go up in size, you get a nice flowy baggy feel, plus they have ties around the waist so they can be fitted at a bigger size.
I wear the Carhartt Men's Force Tappen Cargo Pant
s, they are very much like the grey pair you have there but have cargo pockets on both sides.
Great vid never seen a skateboarding pants video!
Hey Ben what are those pants you were wearing during the talking bits? That light khaki look is dope!
it seems like you would want a little of spandex/synthetic material in your pants especially if you're skating because you need the flexibility.
Have you tried rvca weekend stretch? If so, what do you think ? Have you tried the vans pants???
Hey Ben just a heads up. I don't know if dickies still does this, but their work pants used to have a material release on the waist that you could cut and it would open up the waist by at least an inch. This is kind of hard to explain, but essentially its a fold of material on the waist that when you cut the thread it will open up. Give that smaller pair a look, maybe they have it.
The first grey pants are called the 5 pocket relaxed fit
Hey Ben, Amazon sucks but they have a lot of different carhartt pants options. They even carry ones with no side pockets and some other lighter-weight styles. I almost exclusively wear Carhartt for the same reasons you mentioned
Try the relaxed jeans, they’re pretty light and flexible and don’t have any extra pockets. Just make sure to get the light weight version as purposely make a heavier, thicker version too
i had both brands at the end carhartt imo is comfier most of the times, stretches well, roomy but not too baggy, well balanced kinda
True to size or go up a size?
@@dielit300 true to size and I had loose fit
Dickies aren't comfortable at all until they've been washed a couple times. I wore them all through high school and still do but they have a break in period for sure.
A really good pair I personally wear are obviously a couple pairs of carhartts but also ben davis's(thats the brand) they hold up really well and feel very good
Hey Ben, I know it’s an older video but the carhartt with the 2% spandex are the carhartt rugged flex, definitely the best summer work pants. Just wanted to let you know in case you were still looking for them. Keep up the great videos!
Have u checked out any of the Polar Skate Co pants? If you like Carhartt's and a more baggy fit i imagine you'll really like them, worth the check:)
Carrhart is hands down better.. triple stitched seems @14:32 ..you get what you pay for...I had a pair of work pants that lasted 10 years! Function before fashion.
Are you skating in a second pair of stan smiths ben? I guess that shows how much you love them!
Their superstars
@@mitchflatt819 really? I am blind
Are you sure?
Dickies in Europe are 60€ and up. I ripped a pair of the 60€ ones (without stretch material) in the crotch on the first day of skating. I switched over to uniqlo stuff. Pretty solid and you can get chinos for about 30€. Right now I am skating in 10€ uniqlo pants and imho they even look pretty cool.
My favorite pair to skate in are a pair of thrifted pants that look pretty similar to the haggars actually, nice and roomy
Try Carhartt WIP, the european branch which make some cool durable jeans, but they are kinda pricey, would also recommend Polar 93 jeans.
Red Cap makes a solid cotton work pant. Wear them for skateboarding and at work as an auto tech.
Pair lol
I myself wear work pants because I only get 45 minutes to an hour after I get out of work to skate so I throw my board and skate shoes in my truck and just wear my work clothes instead of taking an extra 15 minute drive home to change and drive 15 minutes back to the park and only get to skate for 15-30 minutes. If I could change my pants I definitely would. I like a straight fit with the flex comfort or whatever you call it. Feels nice on the jewels when doing flip tricks like hard flips that require my legs to spread pretty far😂
love your vids :)
i like dickies shorts better than their pants, they are relaxed and comfortable length. specifically the 13", the 15" are a bit too long. i'm 6'3 and all legs, and i like my shorts to reach my knees. they have duck canvas shorts that are quite comfortable, but not as durable as i would've guessed, but not bad for the price. workwear brands are great for skateboarding, even the less familiar/expensive ones. i like to look for stuff at thrift stores too. carhartt hoodies are my absolute favorite and well worth the price
A good pair of jeans and shoes changes the game!
I like the cargo Dickie's best honestly. They feel the best to me.
Bruh same I got a pair of flex cargo 34x32 and they are baggy enough and feels like I have nothing on lol
@@lucaslarsonmusic yeah they're an underrated pant.
Your son is so lucky, it must be great having a dad to skate with
Amazing video! Carthartt pants are the real deal and Dickies stand no chance.
That nose slide was legit 🤝🤝
What happened to Ben Davis pants? They were big in the 90s here in Cali lol
"bring out the middle aged WASP in me" lol that cracked me up
I feel really behind on skate pants. I'm skill skating in Levi's stretch jeans right now. I guess it you grow up skating in Blind jeans you can skate in anything lol
Hell yeah blind jeans were the shit wish they still made them
Definitely recommend polar big boy or 93 jeans. Best quality and style out there.
Hey Ben if you don’t like the hammer loops then you should get those carhart wip simple pants. Let me know what you think!
Fellow carpenter here, love Carhartts to skate in after work
recently ordered some CCS pants "relaxed fit" and they've been great so far, reasonable price.. also recently ripped thru a pair of Altamont jeans that lasted for 10 years lol
