I saw Leontyne Price many times as Aida at the Met - mainly the old Met! To me, she will always BE Aida! In fact - little known piece of trivia. My mother and I had ticket for the last performance of Aida at the old Met (April 1966) . Birgit Nilsson was supposed to sing Aida that night. Ossie Hawkins came out prior to the start of the performance ... which meant someone big was not going to perform. After announcing that Mme. Nilsson was indisposed, he stated that Mme Price would sing the role of Aida. THE AUDIENCE WENT WILD!!! It was a magical performance! I remember it still!!

No argument is needed... Price is AIDA, not just the best, She is AIDA... Yes she may sound a bit off here but considering this was her swansong and that she had given it all earlier that evening to produce the best O Patria Mia ever recorded or sung in history, this is still monumental...
I disagree with that notion. THEE Aida for sometime was considered Tebaldi (Callas is my personal choice for Aida). Price was no more an Aida than she was a Leonora. Hers was better suited for the high-laying parts of Strauss and Mozart (i.e. Arabella, Donna Anna and the Countess.) She was not fit for the heavier Verdi soprano roles.
@@tonshaad1230 On the contrary, she was the greatest “Trovatore” Leonora and the greatest Aida of all, with that soaring top and warm, aristocratic middle voice, that intense feeling and passionate phrasing!
@@liedersanger1 Except, she wasn't. A little bit of respect, these were her farewell performances. She was no longer in a prime, it was just a wonderful opportunity for fans to see this great Diva for a last time. Fans really do not care if the voice is no longer what it has been. They attend out of love, respect, enjoyment and still her fabulous singing.
When did you last sing Aida? Eduardo? Eduardo? EDUAAAAAASRRRRDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO? WE are waiting? So ferme la BOCA!!!
I have always been impressed by Simon Estes. Fabulous voice and great actor. Price has never, ever impressed me. Her voice has a dusky dound that defeats the music. Estes has plenty of squillo for both.
Von Karajan, Itzhak Perlman, Peter Adler, The Met, La Scala, The London Symphony Orchestra, The Juilliard faculty- THE WORLD. The cobwebs and duskiness that you scribbled that shade in is impressive. Thank you.
His Italian is wildly unidiomatic. He cannot make a proper 'oo' sound. And Leontyne. Nice C in the aria preceding, but otherwise close to unlistenable. She sang better in concerts later.
That comment is from a troll who was conceived by a troll. A female troll gave birth to the human being who would write garbage about Ms. Price. I would love to here the troll reproduce this element of incredible beauty from its diseased lungs, mind snd vocal cords.
Whooping and swooping is generally not thought of as part of bel canto technique. Nor is a middle voice as full of holes as Swiss cheese. Despite the great nostalgia of the evening Cossotto came close to stealing the show. To those ignorant of vocal art the cognoscenti are often mistaken for trolls.

Simon Estes is surpassingly great. His "Penta che il popolo..." moved me to tears, so beautifully did he pour his gorgeous sound out.
The greatest Amanasro I have ever heard!
Check out Giangiacomo Guelfi
Aida is such a though opera to perform! For everybody: tenor, baritone, mezzo and especially soprano.
Simon Estes, Leontyne Price and Fiorenza Cossotto are three reasons for Verdi to be proud.

simon estes is brilliant in this duet. price on the other hand sounds awful here. shrieking, slurring, crooning. not good.
