I had to listen to the crossing signal for a week when a train derailed near my house. It took out about 3 miles of tracks. Back in the day when they hauled candy stripers as we called them. They carried hazardous material. The tracks ran less than a 50 yards by my house. It's a sound you won't ever forget when a locomotive hauling close to 70 cars starts derailing. We were extremely lucky that the hazardous material cars stayed upright on the tracks. My parents were both volunteers at the time of the derailment.

From Lafayette, IN, and as a retired railroader who used to work in good and crappy weather year around... my heart really goes out to those guys who worked hard all day (in the wind and cold!) to get the derailed cars back on the rail... and then... another derailment! Ugh! :-( Just seeing all the snow on the ground and listening to the wind blowing in the camera's mic made me shiver! I really hope the E&LS can find some money to upgrade their track because it's so badly needed. Good video of a really bad situation, Jason, and thanks for braving the cold to get this footage.

CNW used to have some track maintained about this well, which is to say hardly at all. They derailed some loaded 100 grain hoppers one day. They got a rerailing company to get the equipment back on the rail. Two days later they derailed more loads in the same spot. I heard the radio conversation with the roadmaster. "You guys didn't fix this very well, did you." His face was the color of a stop sign. Watching from Fox Point, Wisconsin.

Being this is former Milwaukee Road tracks, this reminds me of something that happened to the Milwaukee way back in 1974 on their Chehalis, WA Sub near Roy, WA. A train bound for Portland, OR was trundling down their decrepit track when the lead car behind the locomotives derails and dumps over into the ditch. The crew assessed the situation. Since the car dumped over and the track was clear and intact, the crew tried to ease the power back to the rest of the train and try to creep the rest of the train past and make their way to Portland. The trailing unit dropped off the rails and that was the end of that. Maybe these guys used to work for the Milwaukee Road, or maybe their parents did?

I have a friend who worked for a contractor in the mid 1980s replacing the ties from Crivitz,Wi to Green Bay. Even after that work the rails had been in use since 1915 based on the steel mill markings, they developed a hump curve and they forced speed restrictions. Remember this line used to be passenger line also. Chippewa Hiawatha service. Too expensive to replace the rail with 136lb welded...
