    And despite Jack’s great work, domestic football in Ireland has continued to be neglected and mistreated while those who run the FAI lined their own pockets.

      It is the reason the national team is in so much of a dire state, imagine how many players who would have had potential to play for the national team went unnoticed by scouts.

    • @danielmurphy8262
      @danielmurphy8262 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@kevinshannon8188 That’s true, but the other main fault was relying on players in English academies rather than building from the bottom up domestically. Hopefully going foward the LOI and grassroots become the bedrock of Irish football. There is no other way.

      What Jack did not only for the irish national team but the country itsself is incredible. He gave Ireland something to grasp onto and put faith in when they needed it. Euro 88 pretty much kicked off the Celtic Tiger and with it modern Ireland itsself. 24 years of growth in 10 percent a year, going from one of the lowest average salaries in the EU to top 5 in the world, 3 straight wins in Eurovision including Riverdance and the crowning achievement: the Good Friday Agreement. Im an American With a broken country at a internal civil war. We need a guy like Jack for our football team. It wouldnt fix all of our problems but it sure would help.

    Memories came flooding back watching this. I can vividly recall after beating Romania the whole street came out and had a kick about. Dads, sons, brothers all had an impromptu pass around up and down the street. In the best possible way the whole country lost the plot. In many ways it was the spark that lit the economic fire that engulfed the country not soon after. We dared to dream after Italia 90. Thanks Big Jack.

    Jack gave people a boost. Put a spring in their step. The economic improvements were based on political decisions not football success. It was a nice experience, before the Celtic Tiger ruined things, some Irish people became arrogant, flush with cash, those who had it had a lot more. The mess Ireland is in now (homelessness, crisis in health, housing, transport, corruption, a tax haven economy, terrible treatment of women and refugees, the emergence of a fascist right) were seeded in the boom years. The memories will be cherished. The FAI however should be abolished - a rotten organisation.

      But they hired Jackie, I'm puzzled. He should have taken Brady to the WC for David Kelly, played Stapleton or Slaven who was a scoring machine and saved Boro from demotion scored like 70% of their goals that season. More Whelan and Hughton for Morris. The rest was OK but I think O Leary deserved a place for McCarthy in my opinion,

One of only a handful of foreigners given full Irish citizenship for his contributions to this country. Ireland in 1990 was a place in need of a lift. I was born in 95 but you can see the emotion when people who there talk about it. Every small town has a few older lads who drank a beer with him. My rural town has less than 500 people and theres a picture in the local of the landlord his mates and Jack. A man who understood our nation and brought us something to be happy about in very bleak times.

    There’s way too much made of that stupid banner “go home Union Jack” at Jack Charlton’s first game in charge of Ireland.
    That’s not how Irish supporters of the time felt at all. There was no particular animosity towards Jack regardless of whether he was English or not. The general feeling of the fans was …. We know this team should be doing better, I wonder what this man can do with them; Let’s see.
