Dave and I both worked at Collin Creek mall together in the mid 90s. He worked at Blockbuster Music and I worked at Camelot Music. He was always really cool and friendly. How ironic that "Bodies" was removed because of 9/11, yet in the wars that followed 9/11, that *exact* song would be playing full blast from every military vehicle gearing up for something dangerous for like the next ten years.
That is absolutely wild to me.

    • @hadara69
      @hadara69 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

Exactly! I was thinking about that horrible scene in Michael Moore’s doc where the tank kid showed him the Ozzfest sampler and they played “bodies”.
So gross that this music is used to desensitize our soldiers to murder of innocents and inspire our country's terrorism of other countries who had nothing to do with 9/11.
A self-fulfilling prophecy for that song, in a sense.

I was lucky enough to call Dave a friend. One of my favorite memories is from a small show at The Iron Bell in Morgans Point, TX the weekend before they joined Ozzfest, Dave convinced my 86yr old great aunt to have a beer with him and stay for the show, which was crazy because I had never seen her drink, let loose or ever enjoy metal before that night. She told the guys to turn down the amps so she could hear him sing better after the first song, Dave was cracking jokes at her just being charming for the rest of the set, it was so funny. I got to sing Tearing Away with him that night and she thought it was the coolest thing ever. Good times.

Dave Williams was such an extraordinarily nice dude. I met Dave after the Drowning Pool set at the Big Day Out 2001 in Auckland, New Zealand, when Dave was in the crowd waiting like the rest of us to watch the System of a Down set. He signed my festival ticket (still treasured and stored away till this day) and was super humble when I told him how my mates and I would rock out to "Tear Away" on repeat. The following year, Dave passed away, and it left a huge hole in the lives of so many fans. We still miss you dearly, Dave - you're still the best Drowning Pool singer, hands down.

My youngest son was born with a variant of this condition, called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). He had open heart surgery at 3 months old, and my wife and I are doing everything in our power to ensure he lives as long and healthy of a life as possible. He's 4 now, and we're so blessed to have him. It truly breaks my heart that this young man passed from this. If you ever experience chest pains or shortness of breath, especially after extensive exercise, please see a cardiologist and get an echocardiogram. They can detect cardiomyopathy issues with one quick check. I wish this check would become mandatory nationwide for all children getting into sports. It can mean the difference between life and death for many.

Seen them at Ozzfest in Tampa , I took my 12 year old son, and he was a drowning pool fan before we went , and after the show, they had a tent and tables, selling their shirts and cd's. They were great about interacting with the fans, and when we stopped in. ( My son had a 18 inch " rat tail" braid, and a wealth on knowledge about their music), they were so nice to him, and Dave talked to him for probably 15 minutes, with the rest paying attention and joining in. It didn’t surprise me when I found out years later that he had become famous. I was saddened to hear of his death, but not surprised. Just being honest. Even in the early days, Dave liked to party. Wow, I totally forgot about "street teams" that represented bands and spread their music around via word of mouth. Man, that brings back good memories. Besides their song, Bodies... I honestly dont know any other songs by Drowning Pool. Also, I didn't even know they still exist and continued on as a band after their lead singer passed away. I always felt like Dave Williams was biting Phil Anselmo's style though. Even back then I thought it too lol the few times I saw them perform the song Bodies on late night talk shows and mtv back then. From the cut off cargo shorts to sleeveless dickies work shirts, leather wrist bands and tattoos lol. Everyone was biting Phil and Panteras style back then even Kerry King of Slayer. I remember reading an interview of him where he claimed and was always acting like he invented the look off cutting your cargo pants into shorts. But, about Drowning Pool its unfortunate when bands like them are taking off and exploding and then something serious like a death derails the band or their career, and it always gets you in the mindset of what would they have done if the tragedy never happened? Would they have been a one hit wonder, or would they have really lived up to their hype of being the next big thing? It always leaves you wondering... I was in 7th grade when the singer passed away and I remember the few metal heads in my school being bummed out about it. 2001 was a weird and intense year... from 9/11 tragedy, to the war on terror officially kicking off, to people dying in the music scene.. because I remember Layne Staley also passing away a few months later in the beginning of 2002. Then, Pantera unofficially broke up. 2001 was a crazy year.

I will NEVER forget September 12th 2001. I had tickets to see Drowning Pool and Sevendust in LaCrescent Minnesota. If I'm not mistaken they were the only or one of very few bands that didn't postpone their show. My brother, a friend and I were standing in line waiting for the doors to open when Drowning Pool came out and walked by the line. They were filming the crowd and, it goes without saying, the crowd got hyped seeing them walk by.
Maybe 10-20 minutes later I was just talking to my brother and friend when I heard someone say "Hey, love your shirt." I turned and looked to see who it was. It was Dave Williams. He was wearing the same Black Sabbath shirt I was. He came over and gave my friend, a female, a hug and kinda B.S'd for a minute or two before making his way back inside the venue with the rest of the band.
When I heard of his death, it hit me hard. To this day and until the day I die, I will never forget what happened that night. It's one of my most favorite experiences involving a famous person.

I seen him 12 hrs before he died in Michigan your telling me he played again at noon in Virginia. He died from heroin. I think you are mistaken about his last show. It was at Ozzfest in Michigan and he was on his way to Virginia and he was already dead so I don't know how he played a show.

@@joshuamasserant8215 wrong. His last show was an Ozzfest show in Noblesville/Indy, Indiana.

Dave Williams is one of the most underrated rock singers and personalities, I was backstage at Ozzfest in Detroit, the day b4 he passed away and I had a chance to meet Dave after Corey Taylor telling me he was the nicest dude ever, I regret that to this day. I wish I he knew how many people hold that record with such a hugh regard! Im a massive fan of SINNER and from start to finish its a great fuckin album. Not ground breaking but just fucking solid and filled with great heavy songs!

I remember seeing Dave when he was 15 or 16 playing at On The Rocks here in Dallas. He was walking past me and I stopped him. I told him great job kid, you got something. Other than being a dumpy kid, you got something. (breakin balls) We went on to do several shows with Mr Luv Dawg. This kid would bust into some MC Hammer (Can't Touch This) or Blondie (On Way) between songs just keeping it loose. Such a stage master and a great singer and all around good dude. Rip.

You hear the demos on the unlucky 13 anniversary album and you can tell that they were on their way to be big if Williams didn’t die.

Drowning Pool could've been as popular as bands like Slipknot or Disturbed if Dave Williams never died. It's still a tragedy to this day he died at a time the band was starting to build a huge fanbase.

The best thing about Drowning Pool was seeing those Bathory and Venom shirts in this video.

Great video, thanks for setting the record straight about his death. Took me 20 years to find out he didn’t die of a drug overdose. I remember that was the early story of it and I never heard otherwise. Not a huge fan but I did like them, just never dug into more of what happened with Williams, just remember the news being sad.

The majority of rock bands NEVER PLAY IN ALASKA . I guess playing in Alaska is too much work for little money because it costs much more just to live here . Drowning Pool took a risk playing up here , because at the time they were still new . It's a bigger risk for them because alot depends on how well the ticket sales are .

I think if Dave Williams hadn’t of died, Drowning Pool would’ve been as big as KoRn, Slipknot, SOAD, and Disturbed.

Let me tell you, this disease sucks (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) and it's terrible he died from it before he even knew he had it. I never knew slash had been diagnosed with substance abuse form of this disease. Like him (Slash) I have an implanted defibrillator.
