Let’s visit Tom who built a hybrid aquaponics system in a backyard greenhouse. Tom is based in Melbourne Australia. He is opening us the door to an interesting system composed of both a flood and drain grow-bed aquaponics and a Deep Water Culture aquaponics.
The fish tanks are composed of 2 in-ground IBCs (Industrial Bulk Containers) covered by a nice decking. You actually don’t see the tanks when you enter in the greenhouse as they are literally below your feet. Tom is currently growing Australian native fish such as eel tail catfish, Murray cod and Golden perch. He plans to later add trouts into the system.
He simply has to lift the decking/tanks lead to have access to the fish. The setup is very neat and tidy.
Tom choose to divert the water flow from the water pump in the fish tank to 2 different growing setups.
1 The flood and drain growbed section composed of 2 growbeds equipped with a bell siphon and clay balls as media. Those 2 Growbeds are producing very well and we note a very large sweet potato plant is currently transforming the greenhouse into a jungle.
2 The Deep Water Culture section is composed of 2 raft tanks equipped with air stones. The polystyrene rafts are floating on the surface and supporting pots where plants are growing.
Tom has noted that the DWC works extremely well with leafy vegetables while the Growbed technique seems more adapted to fruit plants.
We thank Tom for his time and congratulations again for the very nice system. Each square meter of this greenhouse has been optimized and will allow a nice food production.
Tom is also working on other solar systems to power the greenhouse so we will probably see him again in future articles and videos :)

    Great video Jonathan.
Jonathan, I have noticed one thing in aquaponic system from many people.
Generally in Aquaponic, the water flows out from the fish tank to the filters than to the grow bed/DWC/ NFT system, then to the sump tank and from sump tank, the water is pumped out to the fish tank again to complete the cycle.
But I have noticed that people are using a pump in the sump tank which will pump the water to the grow beds and the fish tank simultaneously by dividing the water to the fish tank and grow bed. Water comes out from the fish tank to the filters, then to the sump tank. and then pumped out to grow bed and fish tank.
What I think is, the water has just come to the sump tank from the fish tank and the nutrient rich water is going back to the fish tank again(at least partially because the nutrients rich water have jsut come to the sump tank from the filters)
Sorry for the confusion as I am confused and has doubt on this.

      Hello Umesh,
      very interesting question.
When we design the water flow we take several points in consideration, here are a few:
      1. try to work with gravity as much as possible which means avoid using 2 pumps and avoid height.
      2. If you are using a filtration, get the filtration between the fish tank and the grow-beds so that you are only sending clear water to your grow-beds. If you have a DWC, this point is very very important as we don't want particles do stick on the plant roots.
      3. A sump tank help to position the elements as you like and have the pump in a safe and accessible place.
      Cheers :)

@@AquaponicsRevolution Thanks Jonathan for the explanation. I am planning to build a bigger Aquaponic system and I am planning to make Sump tank underground which will help to maintain the temperature.
Here is the cycle: Fish tank -> Mechanical Filter -> Bio Filter ->Grow bed/DWC -> Sump Tank -> Water is pumped to the fish tank using pump. Water from the fish tank will flow using Gravity to the mechanical filter. then it will go to the bio filter and then Grow bed and DWC. Then water will collected at the sum tank. and finally pump will be used to pump up the water to the fish tank. But I am not pumping this water from the sump tank to the grow bed/DWC.
Now after looking at coupe of videos from different experts who is using pumping water to the grow bed and fish tank simultaneously, I got confused a bit which one is better. The complete cycle as mentioned above or pumping water to the grow bed and fish tank simultaneously.

Great vid Jon & lovely set-up Tom. I do organic hydro in the UK & am going to try aquaponics in a polytunnel soon. Btw Jon I use fermented citrus insecticide which works great on all plant predators (ones with wings & 6 legs!).

    • @sarahgodfrey3892
      @sarahgodfrey3892 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Melbourne Aquaponics you only spray it in the dark or it will kill the plants. Recipe: 2 cups citrus peel, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp yeast, 4 cups water. Ferment for 2.5 weeks. Strain & add 1 cup of apple cider vinegar. Dilution rate: 2 cups of ferment per gallon of water. Although I have made this slightly stonger for stubborn infestations on more mature plants.
