작가 최명희(崔明姬, 1947∼1998)의 소설 『혼불』은 ‘우리 풍속의 보고(寶庫)이자 모국어의 보고’라는 평가를 받을 정도로 전통문화의 원형을 잘 보존하고 있는 소설이다. 남원시는 작가의 예술 정신을 기리고 주변의 소설 배경이 되는 최씨 종가, 청호저수지, 달맞이 공원, 구서도역 등과 연계하여 문학 마을로 조성하기 위해 설립하였다.

두 채의 한옥으로 이루어진 문학관은 유품 전시실과 집필실인 작가의 방, 주제 전시실로 꾸며져 있다. 유품 전시실에는 작가의 사진과 ‘최명희 혼불’이라 쓴 자필 글씨, 생전에 작가가 사용한 만년필과 잉크병, 꼼꼼하게 정리된 작가의 취재 수첩과 자료집 등이 전시되어 있다. 작가의 생전 모습, 수상 경력, 작가로서의 삶, 그리고 『동아일보』에 연재되었을 때부터 단행본으로 출간되어 지금에 이르기까지 『혼불』의 역사가 정리되어 있다.
유품 전시실 다음에는 작가의 집필 방을 재현해 놓았고 소설 속 주요 장면을 입체 모형으로 재현한 디오라마(diorama) 10점과 소설 『혼불』을 소개하는 매직비전, 인월댁 베짜기 시설 등이 전시되어 있다. 디오라마는 혼례식, 강모와 강실 소꿉놀이, 액막이연 날리기, 효원 보름달을 보고 소원을 빌면서 그 정기를 빨아들이는 흡월(吸月), 청암부인 장례식, 춘복이 달맞이 장면 등으로 구성되어 있다. 꽃심관에는 사랑실과 누마루 '소살소살'이 있어 문학관을 찾는 이에게 공부방 혹은 쉼터 역할을 하고 있다.

Next to the artifact exhibition room, the author's writing room is reproduced, and there are 10 dioramas that reproduce major scenes in the novel in three-dimensional models, Magic Vision that introduces the novel Honbul, and Inwoldak Weaving Facility.,The diorama consists of a wedding ceremony, a bristle and a chamber house play, an amulet kite flying, a sucking moon that sucks the period while wishing for a wish at the full moon of Hyowon, a funeral ceremony for Mrs. Cheongam, and a scene of a spring moon.,There is a love room and a numaru 'Sosal Sosal' in the flower center, which serves as a study room or shelter for those who are looking for a literary museum.
